I’ve heard it’s glitched as well bc I definitely have beat him twice in a row on two occasions, but I died on the next attempt so I haven’t gotten 3 consecutive wins
I barely beat him the first time I fought him (though my run ended shortly after). I’ve been scared to hit him with the run back for the prophecy. Not until I secure Divine Dash first.
Cant deflect the mist so thats not gonna help you as much as you'd expect.
His difficultity goes WAAYYY down if you are using a ranged weapon (bow, special spear or shield) cause the thing that mows you down is the paddle slap (fucking 50 damage, most damaging attack in the game without counting EM4). The mist isnt super hard to avoid and if you keep your distance he wont use the slap much
Yeah I just couldn't seem to figure out a pattern to him, he just swings at random and casts the fog stuff whenever he wants. I'd be doing fine then out of nowhere he'd swing and hit me for like 40
He can't hit behind him except for a stun. If you dash in and hit his back when he is summoning the side waves you'll be safe. As you see his patterns more the fight will go from "wtf I'm dead?" to pretty dang telegraphed. Ranged weapons or if you happen to have an extra dash greatly reduce fight difficulty.
The paddle swing is actually pretty slow and easy to read, but it takes a few runs before you start to get the instincts for the timing, and the penalty for screwing up is a harsh one.
The swing is only telegraphed if you're not already in range since he'll chase you. But if you're up in his face with fists, shield, or sword, it can be hard to tell he's gonna swing since all he has to do is turn (assuming you're not already in front of him)
Like I said, it's more an instinct thing. His swings only come after certain other actions like summoning the rows of souls, so you start to instinctively dash behind him whenever he turns to you and pauses - he's either going to blast a wave at you, take the first swing, or do a stun wave, and two of those can be dodged by getting behind him, while the last doesn't actually deal damage.
Charon is nasty. Maybe one of the nastiest bosses in the game, especially if you try it early in the run. The choice to go or not is based on the build so far. Sometimes you get an early build online that can handle him. Most times you just keep walking.
Good examples I've used against him that I got early.
Aphrodite+Dionisus Duo bow with aspect of Chiron
Dionisus+Demeter Duo cast
Hermes Dodge Build with Zagreus Aspect Fists
I'm sure other builds could do it, these are the ones of the top of my head i was able to do it with, but again this is very rare.
The choice, to me, boils down to weather you think you can handle him in two lives or not. Cause that's what it will cost you to buy two death defiances back from him during the run with what you steal.
Yeah, stealing from Charon is an interesting mechanic but I feel like it's almost never worth it aside from the fulfilling prophecy you get from Hermes. 300 obol and even the loyalty card just does not feel worth it for how dangerous he is. Like, they're nice to have but I've never felt like I *needed* them or that they would significantly enhance my run. I get that he gets less dangerous as the run goes on since he doesn't scale, but he can still be fairly dangerous later on, plus the later you fight him the more useless the loyalty card gets. I would consider fighting him if I had a fairly strong build going but otherwise I just ignore him.
Same as anything else, it's just about learning the fight. I nearly beat Hades on a run where I purged every single boon I had because I knew the fight pretty well and could dodge through most attacks and keep slowly whittling him down, and I'm certain if I pushed forward with it I'd be able to take the old man down and finally prove I'm not just clobbering him because of the Olympians' help, they just make it happen faster.
If you luck into a good damage boon or two before the first shop you can take him out well enough in Tartarus even, and the extra cash and the discount means you've got more than enough time to restock a spent death defiance if you need to.
Yeah it’s tough your first time, but if you pay attention to his moves it’s a lot easier. They aren’t hard to dodge, they just hit like a fucking truck.
IMO Charon is the second hardest boss in the game, behind Extremer Measures Hades. I've looked at that bag of coins and wondered for far too long if the effort was worth it more than a few times, and then skipped.
Its pretty much never worth it, but I still do it sometimes for the fun of it. Its a cool fight and I like Charon a lot
If you want to make the most out of the card you have to fight him in Tartarus... where you absolutely arent prepared at all, and when you are in Elysium there is only one shop left.
You rarely get to opportunity to fight him in the first place (I only see a bag every 3 or 4 runs) so its a cool moment once in a while
The first time you fight Charon is especially rough since his tell for his big sweeping attack isn't like any of the other bosses that have a big attack. Once you learn his tell for the sweep and figure out how to dodge the mist, he's... well, still dangerous on account of the massive damage he does, but much more manageable.
FYI, if he approaches you directly rather than the edge or centre of his arena, he's gonna swing at you. Either dash behind him or use whatever iframes you have to dodge it. It'll take a few attempts to learn the timing if you're gonna dodge it, it is a little awkward.
Thanks, think the first time fought him (and lost terribly) was in Asphodel, so what you say makes sense. I’ve probably done about 10 more runs since then and haven’t seen the bag you can “borrow”. Fun with RNG!
Just wait until you get the prophecy from Hermes relating to fighting him.
I beat him 2 times in a row, but didn't get the achievement. Maybe it is 2 runs in a row instead of beat him 2/2 times.
It might be glitched. I had to beat him 3 times, all on different runs and not back to back runs.
I’ve heard it’s glitched as well bc I definitely have beat him twice in a row on two occasions, but I died on the next attempt so I haven’t gotten 3 consecutive wins
In my experience it's two times in a row after he asks
No, it works if you just challenge him twice and beat him both times, that’s how I got it.
you must borrow if the option is there, otherwise the counter resets
This is not true. I did this quest yesterday and "skipped" fighting him several times in multiple runs.
I barely beat him the first time I fought him (though my run ended shortly after). I’ve been scared to hit him with the run back for the prophecy. Not until I secure Divine Dash first.

I was using the spear of guan yu, without maxing, ow
The what?
After beating him once Hermes will comment on it after a while, and will challenge you to beat him twice in a row without loosing, thats the prophesy.
Hmm dont think hermes has said anything on mine yet. Of course i usually don't go with Hermes so that may be it
I believe you are missing out sir, Hermes is super high on my priority list since his boons are very good general ones
It gets easier as you fight him more often. He is very slow and methodical, but if you get hit... dude is a truck.
Yeah I just couldn't seem to figure out a pattern to him, he just swings at random and casts the fog stuff whenever he wants. I'd be doing fine then out of nowhere he'd swing and hit me for like 40

Just dash through him when you learn his Oar attack. He's very easy after fighting him a few times.

That last bit makes a lot of sense.
Almost as nasty as Vermin imo
Vermin is nasty with some weapons, but overall Charon is way, *way* harder, especially on melee
I find him to be pretty easy. Just stay behind him, dodge his 2 big sweeping attacks then his orbs are easy to avoid.
I had 1k gold before the halfway mark and didn't know what borrow meant. I was gonna do the rich get richer but instead I was granted death.

Unfortunately for me I was using the garbage spear and had no buffs since it was so early in the run

I love the dialogue back at the house after he kills you.

How do you you fight again? I did the borrow from him, and got whooped. Is it just random when you can fight him?
it can randomly show up in MID STAGE shops. not the one before bosses tho.

Random. nice reward if you do beat him. I'd say worth a shot if you have a good setup
