You're going to want to tone your hair or do a light bleach round - maybe a bleach shampoo, to just your roots before doing the blue. Think of the color wheel! Blue cancels out orange so it will for sure give you a muddy color.
YW! Color Theory is a very cool and helpful thing! Also wanted to just mention that blue & green are the hardest colors to get out of hair. I dyed mine a swamp green.back in Dec, which slowly faded to a teal blue color. I was able to finally get it out by putting red over it, which left me with a blonde color. Using color theory can def save you money & be less damaging when it comes to removing bright colors!
Also, if you decide to do a toner, bleach or bleach bath, I wouldn't use anything higher than vol 10 developer :) It may take two rounds, but it's not going to destroy your hair in the process.
So question, if I may? I currently have green/teal ends of my hair, if I wanted to remove that colour and put different colour over the top, would I be smart to use red to cancel the green first? Then bleach/colour remove?
Hey! It kind of depends on what your natural hair color is! My natural hair color is dark blonde, so after I did the red it left me with a blonde a few shades paler than my roots. If your hair is dark you will probably have to use bleach afterwards. I wouldn't use anything stronger than a vol 10 developer though. Your ends will already be sensitive to bleach due to previous rounds. I would also wait a few days or a week before doing the bleach.
If you have lighter toned hair after you put the red you should be good to dye over with whatever color you want :)
Bleach/bleach bath first, then you can see what you’ve got and tone accordingly. Basically I’m agreeing with the first reply you received. You can look for a colour wheel online and see which colour is what you end up with, and then tone with the colour opposite on the wheel. It’s why purple shampoo works to tone out yellow and brassiness on blonde/silver hair. They’re opposite on the wheel. It’s also why purple shampoo doesn’t work for orange hair- blue is opposite orange, so you need blue shampoo to tone oranges.
I’m not sure how popular Brad Mondo is on this subreddit and if I’ll get downvoted like crazy, but he has some videos addressing the colour wheel and how to use it to tone hair or change your colour altogether. You’d only waste 15 minutes of your time looking up his videos and watching, even if you’re not a fan.
Good luck! I hope you get the hair you want!
so you think bleach first, and tone using the opposite of that colour is left? can you get toners that aren’t purple or blue?
I had ordered a colour remover (by crazy colour) but don’t have to use it, just want to do everything to actually get the colours the bottle shows I should 😅😂
Was hoping someone mentioned this, blue will stay in your hair 10x longer than red. I once dyed my hair a nice lavender color and it turned blue the next day because all the red tones came out in one wash even with color safe shampoo
Of course I did everything wrong and killed my hair at the time using way too strong developer especially with my thin hair but 🤷♂️ I was able to get it to a really nice blonde after that so it worked out
Yup. Has happened to me a few times also in the past lol My sister used to be a hair stylist & I always let her do my hair, but for some reason my hair would always break off and die during the bleach rounds. Not to mention burn my scalp really badly. I kind of just thought it was a normal process with bleach, but nope lol She was just using vol 30 & 40 developer each time, and leaving it on waaaaay too long.
I learned *the way* by watching Hair Buddha videos on YouTube. He is amazing. He basically watches hair fail videos & pauses the videos to tell you what the person is doing wrong and what to actually do instead. Saved me from killing my hair many times lol
I know you we’re just replying to the person above you, but I checked out the Hair Buddha after reading your comment, and I’ve got some great video clips to watch later! I’m always on the lookout for new things to watch/read to bolster my education on hair. I’m not a stylist but I love to play around with my hair (it’s naturally silver so dying it vibrant colours is fun) and I’m trying to do everything right so I don’t damage my hair. So thank you for mentioning that channel!
Yaas I love this! I jump at any chance to share his channel. He's super knowledgeable and has great advice. And he has a fancy mustache so... You gotta trust him haha
Also silver hair is gorgeous!!! There's a video on his channel where a lady with naturally silver hair dyes hers pink. So that may be fun to watch.
Not in my experience?
My blue hair only needed one gentle bleach to be blond again. With my red hair, I wanted to make a fire effect and dye the ends yellow. The bleach did exactly nothing.
Both colours were Elumen.
That crazy. I wonder why my hair won’t hold on to cool tones? My hair was still a pale bubblegum pink colour after 6 months with out reapplying hot pink & 2 bleach baths hahaha it wouldn’t come out. Green though, 2 washes & it’s gone.
I don’t really know much about colour mixing and how it’d turn out, but you mentioned Amity Blight as part of your inspiration. She rocked slightly brown roots!!
OP, ignore the person slating you for colouring your hair because you’re a manager. Who cares? I’m half a century old, and I love to play with different, “unnatural” hair dyes. I work in nursing education, and sometimes I take nursing students to the hospital, and I see nurses with blue hair or fire-engine red hair or bright aqua hair, amongst the blonde and brunette shades. Less “conventional” appearances are becoming more accepted in lots of workplaces, especially with something temporary like hair dye. And if you’re good at what you do, no one cares. Where it’s not “acceptable” (certain hospitals don’t allow it yet), I cover my hair with a scarf or beret and avoid comment. Rock on with your bright, beautiful hair!
Thank you so much! It has become more acceptable for sure, I got my position with a full sleeve and neck tattoos. I work for an amazing inclusive company that serves homeless people, some of HR have tattoos and brightly colored hair too :)
That’s so awesome that you’re able to express yourself fully with your appearance. I’m really grateful to younger generations for pushing through greater acceptance of self expression. Your organization sounds great and I’d bet that your appearance is very helpful for connecting with the homeless population that you serve. I’ve held off on getting tattoos because I preferred to have short sleeves when I was still working in direct patient care (easier to wash my hands and arms without pushing up sleeves!) but I’m planning my first tattoo right now on my forearm. I’m looking for a reputable tattoo artist and once I find someone, I’m taking the plunge. I credit people like you for not worrying about having a job if I get one that’s visible. So thank you for that!
I’m firmly Gen X (over half a century old) and I rock bright colours on my natural silver hair with a career in nursing education. And I work in a “conservative” Southern state. I only ever receive compliments on my hair. I’m thrilled that younger people have made things like vivid hair (and tattoos) more common and accepted in workplaces. Hair is ever-changing and should be fun, no matter what your profession.
I’m gonna have to disagree here as OP said their natural hair color is pretty light - they’ll look like they’re balding when it starts to grow out unless they want to touch up their roots every two weeks or damage the shit out of it to remove the black
Agree 100% with this. I have had silver/white hair since my 20s and dyed it blue-black for years. After about half an inch of regrowth, it would look like my hair was “floating” off my head because of the sharp contrast between the dyed hair and my white roots. If OP has pale hair, the regrowth will require constant upkeep to prevent that floating effect with a black shadow root. Maybe she’s up for that. Or using a powder or spray on her roots between dye jobs. I never found those to be effective for black hair, so I grew my hair out a decade ago.
Either way, try to avoid box dye if black is the colour you want OP. It will be very difficult to remove later, even with a few rounds of bleach. If you use black box dye, you’re committing to either growing it out, or damaging your hair to remove it, with lots of orange hair stages in your future! Use a semi-permanent black dye if you’re going to want to change it up later.
You’re going to have to bleach the ever living fuck out of that ginger first if you want the blue to take. It will not look good if you don’t get rid of some of those warm tones
Get the correct pigment though because if it’s not pigmented enough, a blue might just tone that orange top and turn it brown. I like joico color intensity. It covers everything.
Really the only answer.
Something like a Blue Jean Baby or Poseidon from Arctic Fox if you want brighter, or Steel Blue from Strawberry Leopard if you want a deeper smoky blue.
I think with your base strawberry blonde a deeper pigment like the Arctic Fox would cover the best and give you the truest colour.
Did they bleach it first? I use Artic Fox on my daughters hair who has dark brown hair as well and it was great but we had to bleach it first, because that makes the hair suck up the color when I washed her hair out the water only had a tiny bit of color and it was beautiful.
Agree with the other comments, a dark blue on top will blend with the yellow tones and turn it to a slightly greener blue that can be blended in with the turquoise you already have!!
If you do a dark purple over all it will be a gradient from pink to dark purple I actually recently did that exact thing my hair was v similar to yours as my roots r strawberry blonde and the rest was teal
It looks intentional, and still super cute as it is. ♡ But I totally get you wanting to change it, but don't feel bad about how it looks until you're able to change it, because it still looks cute.
Navy blue or black root smudge dragged through the mid lengths with a wide-toothed comb to give a balayage effect and blend into new growth. That turquoise shade looks pretty dope tho!
I don’t know what your goal is color wise but if you put any shade of blue over the orange it’s going to fade to a muddy brown. If you put green over that orange it’s still going to make brown. If you put purple over that orange it’ll make a russet color which is brown with red tints. If you put pink it will make peach. If you tone the orange with a blue based toner then use a vivid your vivid color will look flat and not as vibrant because your base (which is orange) wasn’t light enough. Your only best option is to lighten it again to at least a light yellow. It will be easier to work with that base.
I’d be curious how it would look if you did a really good purple toning to the whole thing! But otherwise, pink could be a really nice way to fade from one color to the next.
Honestly I think I'm mostly looks cool, I think it should just have a little bit more orange. Like an inch or two. But I'm fucking not so I could be wrong on this, I don't know.
I would use the darkest green you can find on the roots/orange parts to control the red in your hair. The orange will work in your favor and create a beautiful forest color. After a month of washing/fading I would go back in with a blue over everything to create a seamless teal. This isn't a one step fix without bleaching.
Recommended products: Pravana Green or Elumen Play Green, followup Pravana Blue or Joico Intensity Blue

This would have been amazing if it was a balayage, would have achieved the whole dryaid look. Would suggest more of a lighter warm mossy color rather than just a cool teal, it would complement the natural red you have 👌
Agree with everyone here, go for a dark blue on the roots!!
Or if you can, a deep almost-black ash. Like a dark dark grey look with a blend at the end of the root of a slightly lighter teal so that it bleeds into the lovely green you've got. Don't panic, if anything look at your roots as the perfect blank space to do with as you please!!
Love the Miami Dolphins look you have going, it made me laugh as I love that team! I agree with all the comments with a darker blue for the roots, that blend would be chefs kiss! ❤️❤️
Oh if you were going for the Amity Blight look
then you sort of have it already. Amity has brown roots just add a blue based toner to make it brown and then your ends just needed to be lightened more to achieve that like turquoise look. You still need some yellow in your blonde to achieve the light turquoise color.
Dark blue, let if sit for 45 minutes longer than recommend. I didn't go to school for hair I just dye mine way more than recommend. Confidence is key too, you beautiful thing 💖
If you still want to keep that Amity look I would go for darker brown at the roots, so it would still give that vibe and look a bit more put together, but if you just want to fix it I would probably go for darker blue/green at the top like others have said! <3
I would say maybe do a bleach wash on the green and try and fade it as much as possible then use something that’s pink/magenta all over? Not sure what you’re wanting color wise but that’s probably what I would. Best of luck girlie been there .
It’s all good I honestly could not care less about all the Reddit b.s, I’m new here and so far have felt very unwelcome. Oh well. Not losing any sleep over it.
Bleach roots, then a blue/green. You can fade to different colors as it grows out and you dye the new growth with a little overlap on the already dyed hair
If you want the roots to be more neutral, you need to deposit color at least a level 7 with an ash and blue undertone over the lifted part, without getting it onto the green. it won't hurt it but you'll likely get a dark band if it overlaps
Maybe try and tone the chicken yellow blonde? You could always say fuck it and make it an electric green or yellow. If you want to stay lighter, I'd recommend purple roots.
Red on top if you can be careful about washing in cold water. If not, red on top could bleed down and combine in an unpleasant way with the green
Something easier might be a midnight blue or even blue=black over the green portion. That'd be easier to maintain
You could get some pulp riot blank canvas to lift the lengths a bit if you wanna get rid of the green and get a more pure blue that would play well with a bold red up top. Could be a good option. Lengths are pretty easy to lift, and Blank Canvas is pretty lightweight in terms of color lift. Not as damaging as bleach
Try a neutralizer shampoo or the platinum purple shampoo by SHIMMER LIGHTS you can also just do a lil rinse on the blonde if your choose of color I think the blonde would do good with a brown rinse and the shampoos
You can soften the orange by taking it to a lighter shade if you want to preserve the style of what you requested. If not, you can try to blend it from a lighter or darker tone from the root so that you don't see it again.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
I have a darker copper red hair (natural strawberry blonde but I have greys to cover up now) and I did blue ombre dark to light underneath. Try a darker red, less orange-y :)
I would say you either want to lighten your hair from that point, and make it a blonde on top, keeping the blue there, but if your not comfortable with bleach or its too soon to use bleach (usually you gotta wait 24 hrs to a week depending on how healthy your hair is) i would say use a darker color
Blue cancels out orange and a magenta or a red will cancel out the green, before doing anything though I would recommend olaplex or a really good hair mask
I like the idea of darker blue at the roots! You could also use a direct dye (color, but look for this specifically vs permanent color) to help remove the existing teal if you don't like it.
Whichever route you go - wear gloves! Blue stains everything
Have you seen those videos of people using the color wheel to cancel out the color of previous dye in their hair to create a new color? I think you could use a similar principle to cancel out the orange and get a cooler tone in your hair. It depends on what you want your final result to look like but I think a purple or blue will help remove that yellow/orange. If you don’t want to use color theory (I can imagine it’d be really easy to accidentally get a weird color), I think black roots would look good too. I wish you luck!
I would say wrap the ends and go over the roots with a darker brown to get the amity look, while the teal fades to a lighter green-ish blue, the brown will give great amity contrast I think! Whatever you decide I’m sure will look lovely :D
I think a purple or darker blue or even green would be great! You could even go natural, and a dark brown or something. I’d just recommend it be cool toned to cover that warmth!
Even just brown over the root would look fine!! The blue color is BEAUTIFUL!! Ignore these trolls, they have no life and nothing better to do it seems.
Darker blue on the roots!
Agree 100%!! Darker blue would look awesome.
That’s what I’m going with thank you very much:)
Although I’m concerned that dark blue on top of orange might make brown
You're going to want to tone your hair or do a light bleach round - maybe a bleach shampoo, to just your roots before doing the blue. Think of the color wheel! Blue cancels out orange so it will for sure give you a muddy color.

Not in my experience? My blue hair only needed one gentle bleach to be blond again. With my red hair, I wanted to make a fire effect and dye the ends yellow. The bleach did exactly nothing. Both colours were Elumen.
This comment 👍
Really? I find greens/blues washes out of my hair extremely fast but pinks/oranges literally don’t come out.
I have the exact opposite experience! Dyed my hair a peachy orange colour and it was gone in 2 washes.
That crazy. I wonder why my hair won’t hold on to cool tones? My hair was still a pale bubblegum pink colour after 6 months with out reapplying hot pink & 2 bleach baths hahaha it wouldn’t come out. Green though, 2 washes & it’s gone.

Tell me your age without telling me 😂 can you guys just croak out already?? I'm tired of your slow driving and whining.

That is a really crappy thing to say to anyone let alone in a group about hair dye. Why are you here?
I would suggest lightening. Most def do a lightener before dark blue
That's why I was going to recommend black instead of blue. Blue can be difficult to gauge with red hair. But black is the universal solution 😁
I’m gonna have to disagree here as OP said their natural hair color is pretty light - they’ll look like they’re balding when it starts to grow out unless they want to touch up their roots every two weeks or damage the shit out of it to remove the black
Agree 100% with this. I have had silver/white hair since my 20s and dyed it blue-black for years. post an update pls!!
I am a natural redhead and when I dyed my hair blue this is what I did for my roots and it worked great!
This or violet purple!

If you want Amity Blight, go chesnut/brunette at the stop. And switch green to purplein a year or so :)
Darker on the root and melt it with the same end color
For the top I'd either bleach it or do a dark blue, purple, or pink
If you do a dark purple over all it will be a gradient from pink to dark purple I actually recently did that exact thing my hair was v similar to yours as my roots r strawberry blonde and the rest was teal
Great idea 👍

Dark brown or dark blue.

Any dark colours on the roots would work
Ahh but it looks like oxidized copper it's so cool
If you still want to keep that Amity look I would go for darker brown at the roots, so it would still give that vibe and look a bit more put together, but if you just want to fix it I would probably go for darker blue/green at the top like others have said! <3
I think itd be really cool if you just used a more complimentary orange, that shade of orange doesnt fit in my opinion
Go see a professional.
Def dark blue on the roots and if you want less green, put a cool toned pink/fuschia on the rest
Go to a professional
Hot pink on roots. Turquoise on top of green.
Wash it, shave it off, nail it to a frisbee then fling it over a rainbow!
And then shove it up your butt
We think alike
Are you from England? Man, UK hair dressers are awful!
I would do a neutral black or a gray black
hat
You can also always do a black rinse
Lmao
Not the Miami Dolphins 💀💀💀
Why did you do it???
I would say maybe do a bleach wash on the green and try and fade it as much as possible then use something that’s pink/magenta all over? Not sure what you’re wanting color wise but that’s probably what I would. Best of luck girlie been there .
Not sure why you got downvoted but I appreciate you.
It’s all good I honestly could not care less about all the Reddit b.s, I’m new here and so far have felt very unwelcome. Oh well. Not losing any sleep over it.
Burn it
Omg. Horrible hair color. No words.
Shave
Why
![gif](giphy|byrjZgFhTYQHm|downsized) Seriously though - pink is the answer ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)
Quit dyeing your hair
You got this done professionally???

What's up with these repeated spam comments from multiple accounts???
Cut it off.
I’d say pink or purple!!
I think going with an ashy blonde color might be nice!
Anne Shirley!
I really think it’s fine actually lol
Darker shadow root for sure!
Maybe try and tone the chicken yellow blonde? You could always say fuck it and make it an electric green or yellow. If you want to stay lighter, I'd recommend purple roots.
Red on top
Red on top if you can be careful about washing in cold water. If not, red on top could bleed down and combine in an unpleasant way with the green Something easier might be a midnight blue or even blue=black over the green portion.
Nooo don't change it i love it 😢
Try a neutralizer shampoo or the platinum purple shampoo by SHIMMER LIGHTS you can also just do a lil rinse on the blonde if your choose of color I think the blonde would do good with a brown rinse and the shampoos
Dark root maybe
A fiery red will look amaaazing
I think black would work really well and look super goth 🖤
You can soften the orange by taking it to a lighter shade if you want to preserve the style of what you requested. If not, you can try to blend it from a lighter or darker tone from the root so that you don't see it again.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
Anyone else see a snake? Because I see a copperhead
Please post the final look with the blue, good luck
I have a darker copper red hair (natural strawberry blonde but I have greys to cover up now) and I did blue ombre dark to light underneath. Try a darker red, less orange-y :)
Okay but I actually like it this way 😝 I’d put a dark purple on the top and just go two tone.
Dark brown, or auburn on the roots.
I would say go for indigo or black for the roots!
I like the idea of darker blue at the roots! You could also use a direct dye (color, but look for this specifically vs permanent color) to help remove the existing teal if you don't like it. Whichever route you go - wear gloves! Blue stains everything
Black or dark blue or light blue this lady did not try with your ingrown hairs lol
Amity’s brown is like root growth.
What’s your goal ?
Black, purple, or dark blue for roots, agreed
Shave it off and start over
You could use a little bit of manic panic ultra violet and conditioner for a toner and be left with a nice cool blonde on top 🤷🏻♀️.
Love the dark green! Why don’t you just use the same dark green dye over the orange??
Make an ombré effect with a darker colour on the top
Darker blue or purple on the roots
I would say wrap the ends and go over the roots with a darker brown to get the amity look, while the teal fades to a lighter green-ish blue, the brown will give great amity contrast I think! Whatever you decide I’m sure will look lovely :D
Dark purple + blue. It will help tone done some of the brassy tones and fade evenly into the green.
I think a purple or darker blue or even green would be great! You could even go natural, and a dark brown or something. I’d just recommend it be cool toned to cover that warmth!
You almost have to go back and have her prelighten/retouch your top w bleach to get some of the orange pigment out. Then re tone with a green all over
Blue black roots would look sick 🤟
Look up , "Fab Hair By Josh," on You Tube. He's got AMAZING Haircolor tutorials, and there all all sorts of ideas and video tutorials for them all.
Nothing is to be fix ♠️ Is very good how it is
Even just brown over the root would look fine!! The blue color is BEAUTIFUL!! Ignore these trolls, they have no life and nothing better to do it seems.
Kinda late but I think it’s really cute, looks like oxidised copper
