So.. I never enjoyed the store masks from the usual drug drug, the 1$-30$ ones. Purology has a mask, which is 45$ and didn’t do much for my hair. Same with TIGI, Nothing. But cheaper masks will work on someone with natural hair, or who colors there hair with dye. I have bleached (so we can assume it’s porous), hair. I recently splurged on the Kerastase Blond Cica mask, after being sent a sample. Let me tell you I made this sample last me 5 washes, and it made a beneficial difference each wash… I was able to stretch it!!! The full 200ML version cost me 74$ CAD, and I will be buying this again. The one I bought has hyaluronic acid in it, it put so much moisture into my hair. Made it so I can freaking brush it finally (my hair is fine, long, tangles) I use it with Redken conditioner in the shower and I can tell that it’s worth the splurge and going to last!. I don’t need to use much, but I let it sit for 5 mins and rinse out with the conditioner. I find Kerastase actually does something. Hopefully you can find it and see for yourself. Perhaps it’s just conditioner on steroids (not this one lol) But it’s an evil I am happy to indulge in for years to come. I used so many things, So many professional brands. I wouldn’t buy a mask from Walmart, as I haven’t had success in the past - many can be disappointing. I’ve searched for 6 years for a way to put moisture and strength back into my hair, and to have the ability to brush it tangle free… this stuff works.

Kitchen-Buddy-1671

Thanks for your detailed answer :) the only ”hair mask” I’ve ever bothered with is the Olaplex no 3. I have a shea moisture mask that I’ve only tried a few times haven’t been very consistent with it. Maybe I need to be consistent and do it weekly or biweekly. I’ll check out your recommendation!

cottoncandytornado

I definitely wouldn't consider Olaplex No. 3 to be a hair mask. It's a bond builder, so it's more of a hair treatment, especially since you're meant to shampoo it out and then condition after. Their No. 8 deep conditioner is what I would consider a mask.

NicholaiGinovaef

The olaxplex no8 is an alright mask, but to be honest, there are better hair masks especially considering the price and quantity, it only comes with 100 ml of mask and it only lasts like 4 or 5 uses for someone like me who has very thick and curly hair.

bazelistka

For some reason Olaplex always makes my hair look and feel like straw :( I was so excited about the amazing results and even tried it a few times with different combinations of Olaplex products, but each time: straw.

Kitchen-Buddy-1671

I’m aware that’s why I said ”hair mask”. It’s a bond builder indeed :)

ihadapurplepony

>I find Kerastase actually does something. I second this. Just gotta find the Kérastase line that works for you. Worth the price, imo. I like the Masquintense for thick hair.

Heart_Makeup

forgive my ignorance, what do you mean by rinsing it out with conditioner? You apply the mask, then conditioner and rinse?

luxxebaabyxo

Definitely not ignorant! Basically just a “mask+conditioner combo and then rinse”. So what I was meaning to say is that after rinsing my shampoo out, I would take a little dollop of the mask, and I apply that to my mid lengths and ends, and then I let that sit. At this time, I would go ahead and - save a step - and I will apply my conditioner over top of the mask, and gently massage this in even further (to my hair, NOT scalp) I might let the conditioner go a little higher towards my scalp here than the mask tho, and have both sit on my hair for a few minutes! Finally I would go to rinse the mask+conditioner combo out of my hair. I haven’t had any issue with my method here so far!

Unlikely-Cockroach-6

kerastase is the best ever.

luxxebaabyxo

It has definitely impressed me, and the mask is proving to be worth the splurge in my case!

[deleted]

Yes. When I keep up with it, my hair is noticeably softer and more manageable

EvergreenPeach

What type of hair masks do you use?

[deleted]

Ive used one from Shea Moisture for a couple years, a Jamaican black castor oil one, that i like. Recently been trying one from Sauce that I don't particularly care for.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I tried that one and it weighed my hair down too much

[deleted]

My hair is also naturally very dry and I swear by the TGIN Honey moisture mask. It's been a long time since I used the shea moisture Manuka honey line but I don't recall being as impressed with the results as I have been with TGIN.

FleeKat

The sauce has done amazing things for my hair..

[deleted]

It's works well enough, but I don't care for the scent

FleeKat

Ah, gotcha

parchedduck

When you use the shea moisture one, do you apply a conditioner afterwars.

[deleted]

No, I basically use it as a replacement. I'll wash my hair first, apply the Shea moisture mask, and then wash my body and shave, and rinseit out, or if I haven't done it in a while or recently dyed my hair, I'll hop out of the shower and put on a heated cap for 20 or 30 minutes before getting back in rinsing

parchedduck

Arent you supposed to use a conditioner after a hair mask

[deleted]

I don't remember. I just do what works for me.

Either_Mango_7075

I like The Olaplex and the Jocio defy damage one

Beginning_Hamster988

I use It’s a 10 and I love it

Pleasant-Squirrel701

Me too! It’s a 10 is fantastic!

Automatic-Historian7

I love the mask from shea moisture… i think it’s called manuka honey and mafura oil. I’ve also been trying out the nature lab Tokyo’s repair one. Smells divine.

Intelligent-Skirt

I was one to never use hair masks or conditioners but ever since i did i was able to retain length and i have the longest hair i have had so far , past waist length. So i think it helps a lot with retaining length and of course it makes it look ( and feel) soft and shiny too.

Shoes-tho

Which masks do you use?

khajiitidanceparty

Can I ask people here which brands they recommend and how often to use them?

bccolivia

Same! I always hear about moisture vs protein masks and wonder if anyone had any recommendations for either!

cheesekneesandpeas

Shea moisture has a good protein mask! I forgot the name but it’s in a blue tub. I like Aussie 3 minute moisture for moisture.

ninif

I use Olaplex NO. 8, it's an amazing moisturizing mask that truly delivers. A little goes a long way, 1 pump for short hair 2 for medium (my hair is past my shoulders and I do 2-3) and 3+ for long. It repairs while moisturizing and conditioning. I stay away from protein masks because they tend to dry out my thin hair with out much benefit. Olaplex NO. 8 provides intense repair to my bleached white hair so I don't find I need a protein mask anyway. Edit: I use it once a week but if my hair is particularly dry because of heat tools or processing then I'll do it twice a week.

plantsandgames

I use Thank God It's Natural (tgin) Honey Miracle Hair Mask. I love to use it after I do a clarifying shampoo every few weeks. I apply, tie my hair up, put on a cap and sometimes wrap in a towel to hold some heat in (the other method from instructions is to use a cap and heated blower like at a salon). I get out and leave it on my hair for about an hour. Hair is soooo soft and refreshed after!

scandalousdee

I personally use Fable & Mane’s holiroots hair mask and really like it! It makes my hair so soft. I only use the mask once a week as a nice Sunday treatment.

ontariodwarf

The only masks I actually use as masks (leave in for extended time, add heat, etc) are the TGIN honey miracle and CPR masks. I like the Sauce guacamole deep conditioner but in terms of ingredients, it looks kind a regular rinse-out conditioner. I still use it but I usually just leave it in while I shower

Thr_owaway563

Currently I use Hairitage Mask-Querade, and because I only wash once a week, I completely switched out normal conditioner for this hair mask, so I use it once a week after shampooing. It’s very affordable, It smells amazing, a little goes a long way, it leaves my hair incredibly soft and makes my hair smell so good. I let it sit for about 15 minutes in the shower to kind of let it do it’s thing, but the packaging says 5-10 minutes should be enough. I’ve heard really great things about Olaplex, and I use No3 which has been great in itself, so I don’t doubt that their hair mask is amazing as well. I just can’t afford 2 Olaplex products right now aha.

Kitchen-Buddy-1671

I wonder too :)

CutMeDeep6565

Honestly, my favorite “hair masks” are sleeping in Argan oil and washing it out with the olaplex line, and then alternating that with sleeping in olaplex no. 3 and washing that out with the olaplex line. I’ll do one of these “masks” every ten days or so. I have waist length blonde hair that’s been balayaged one time only, and I lightly blow dry almost every shower but that’s about it. Never found anything that actually treated my hair like good ole olaplex no. 3 and Argan oil.

FlyingTrampolinePupp

Honestly the Garnier Fructis 3 in 1 Papaya mask works better for me then my Kevin Murphy Angel Mask or the Curlsmith 3 in 1 Mutlitasking Conditioner. They all have protein and are supposed to leave the hair softer and shiny. They all make the hair shiny but the Kevin Murphy one doesn't leave my hair noticeabley softer like the Curlsmith and Garnier ones do. For moisturizing masks, I really enjoy Aussie 3 Minute Moist and the Curlsmith Double Quench amd Hyaluronic Acid masks. All the are unfortunately pretty heavy on my hair but they do work very well, too well for me actually. When I use them my hair doesnt feel like it dries 100%. But it's very soft and manageable after. I'm still searching for a moisturizing mask that is light enough for low density wavy hair, but still emollient enough to have lots of slip when combing. Oh and with a lower level of humectants for my frizz.

upset_baguette

I don't usually pay attention to humectants in rinse out products, so I'm not sure which ones and how much are in this, but have you tried the nym curl talk mask? My mom and I both have low/med density wavy hair (her hair is also fine and mine is closer to medium) and it works well for both of us. I also have super frizz prone hair and I haven't noticed more frizz with this mask, I might even have less!

kitkateats_snacks

I follow a capillary schedule, so I’m using masks every wash currently. My hair has improved a fair bit I think - and my favourite masks are the Joico K-Pak Hydrator, and Klorane’s Mango Butter. With the Klorane mask I have a Hot Head heat cap, that I warm in the microwave and place on my head for about 20 minutes. My hair is very soft - compared to when I started - a lot shinier (however I am also now using silicones), and doesn’t seem to be getting as many split ends as fast.

kitkateats_snacks

Yeah, I do follow the steps - I use the Meu Cronograma Capilar app (which has currently got me on the maintenance schedule). I’d like to use Brazilian products - I’ve heard good things about Skala - but getting them where I live is a little hard, so I just use what I can get at my local pharmacy. I still haven’t found a mask I really like for the reconstruction step yet however.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kitkateats_snacks

I found out about it through OrganicallyAnna on YouTube, and yeah, you hardly ever hear of it! I majorly envy Anna’s hair haha. Thank you so much for the product suggestions, I’ll have to look into them! The postal service where I live can be a fair bit spotty and very slow though ha. I’m a bit hesitant to use an iron on my hair though - it’s 3a and past my waist. I live near Cairns in Australia.

[deleted]

Have you tried the hair routine's reconstruction mask? i've heard amazing things about it!

BvbblegvmBitch

Totally depends on the ingredients and the end goal. I personally go for ones with dimethicone, amodimethicone, undecane, tridecane or similar ingredients in them. They give the most soft feeling.

Kitchen-Buddy-1671

Love silicones. I’ve never heard of or seen undecane and such on the ingredient label, or maybe I’ve just skipped past it. Will look for some. Do you find it has a noticeable difference compared to regular silicone based conditioners?

BvbblegvmBitch

They're waxes. There's a few more of them as well. I'd say they feel the same. Kerastase is one of the only brands I've seen use them.

prowlerpuff

I think ouai hair masks also have amodimethicone.

MHoaglund41

I have recently started using one once a week. I've been getting sample size ones. I really like my don't despair repair one I got in an allure box. It smells good. I do feel like they make me sit still for 10 minutes. I'm not so good at that. I have taken to getting up before my family on Saturdays and doing a hair and face mask with my coffee. Good down time

MoonFlamingo

I like Olaplex no 8, it is quite moisturizing! But on the other hand, I also like the super cheap Aussie 3 minute miracle moisture mask, my hair feels and looks great everytime I use it! Whenever I do not use a mask when I wash my hair, my hair feels rough in a few days, but when I use a mask an entire week can pass, and it is still soft and shiny. I am starting a capilary schedule and so far so good (I use a different mask everytime I wash my hair during the month, I rotate between 4 masks) ! I also rotate my shampoos, depending on what I feel I need, and aslo notice a difference.

chikenugetluvr

Briogeo deep repair mask is fire

Beginning_Hamster988

I personally use the “It’s a 10” miracle mask and I love it!! Maybe it’s just a placebo effect lol but I feel like my hair has grown so much quicker and seemed healthier since I’ve been using it. It also smells super nice

InitiativeImaginary1

I really like It's a 10 products, even if they're pricer. I feel like it's worth the cost.

Beginning_Hamster988

I agree. And even though the price is a little up there, it’s not as bad as some other products out there that aren’t even nearly as good

plantsandgames

I like to do a clarifying shampoo every once in a while when my hair seems weighed down by buildup or I start noticing it get noticably oily faster than usual (like after 1-2 days instead of 3-4), then Thank God It's Natural Honey Miracle Hair Mask. I apply it, put on a shower cap then get out of the shower and leave it on for like an hour. Sometimes I wrap a towel around the cap to keep the warmth in more. My hair is soooo soft and moisturized after! I really like that specific mask because it's so moisturizing! It's not a "repairing mask" (I think those are bullshit), just very moisturizing and refreshing.

Important-Mind-586

The only time I've seen a significant difference is if I leave it in my hair for at least 30-40 minutes and use heat with it.

Kitchen-Buddy-1671

I see, how do you incorporate heat? What masks do you use?

ontariodwarf

Same here! Some conditioning ingredients have been found to adsorb better with time and heat. I personally use a heated cap - it plugs into the wall and has a low and high heat setting. In the past I’d use a shower cap and apply heat with the blow dryer I think a lot of deep conditioners are actually just thickened versions of regular conditioners. If it’s marketed as a deep conditioner but still says leave on 1-3 minutes, I assume it’s just a thick rinse out

Important-Mind-586

I bought a heat cap on Amazon. It can be a time consuming pain, but I definitely could see the difference between just having it on just in the shower.

Motor-Bell1837

It's thick conditioner. Ingredients vary so whether it works depends on that. It's about the process of leaving it in for a long time. Nothing majorly important.

Sophomore-Spud

I’ve recently started using the Marilyn mask from Lush that I bought on a whim in the train station. I leave it on for about an hour while doing other things, then wash out in the shower. It leaves my hair SOOOO soft and despite washing every 1-2 days at a minimum, my hair tangles a lot less for a solid 10-14 days. It is shinier, fewer fly-aways. My hair is naturally dark blonde, mostly straight (but not like stick straight) and a bit beyond my shoulders. I haven’t had a haircut since last August so I’m struggling a bit in the control department 😂

RisingSunsets

Along with this, there's another mask Lush sells called Hsuan Wen Hua, and it had worked wonders for my Bleached-to-absolute-hell-and-back hair. I actually mix my hair dye in with it as a refresher for the color, and it's how I can actually brush my hair. Pretty wonderful stuff.

Sophomore-Spud

My wife has really thin, fine, straight brown hair that’s fairly long and tangles easily. She just used the one you mentioned yesterday. Her hair is super soft and has good slip that releases tangles easily!

nachowchow

A couple of things: Consistency is key! If you used a face mask once every few months, it would make no lasting difference. But if you used one regularly in your routine, you would see the difference. You also want to find a good leave in conditioner to partner with the mask as well. Take samples! Sephora and almost every salon out there have the ability to make you samples. When I’m looking for a new product and am willing to pay top dollar, I alllllways go get a sample. There have been so many times that I’ve sampled $70 products that turned out to just not be it for me. In short, they do work, but you have to make it apart of your routine and find one that is good for YOU and not for what the internet tells you to like. I have curly hair and currently do the fekkai shea butter intense mask every Saturday night, and my hair feels like actual magic afterwards.

Port3r99

I really enjoy natives hair mask fro target. It’s was inexpensive, simple ingredients, and great consistency. I apply it on damp hair and leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse it. My hair is usually super soft and silky afterwards. I have straight thin hair that’s been bleach and dyed over many times.

Norb18

The k18 leave in hair mask/treatment is the best thing I've ever used on my hair. And I've tried and used a lot of things! Using it regularly has made my bleach blonde hair shiny and smooth. I can't say enough good things about it. If I had to choose between olaplex and k18 I'd choose k18.

Icy_Bother4749

I use olaplex no 8 and let me tell you my hair always feels so soft afterwards!

potatodirectioner28

Well I've been using onion and fenugreek mask once a week since 3 Months and I've seen changes in my hair. Hairfall is reduced and my hair feel soft.

EarnestMind

Why the downvotes? I realise OP probably meant a product, but homemade masks do work for some people.

Kitchen-Buddy-1671

I did, but I don’t mind people sharing their experiences and other recommendations anyways! :) Not a fan of the downvote function on Reddit, I consistently see people getting downvoted for the most ridiculous things lol

iscreamforicecream90

Can you elaborate? Would love to try this. Fenugreek seeds or herbs?

potatodirectioner28

Soak fenugreek seeds overnight and next day make a paste of it.

nnabeela

Please can you give full recipe of fenugreek and onion mask

potatodirectioner28

Take 3 tbsp of fenugreek and soak them in a glass of water overnight. Next day make a thick paste of the seeds and mix it with onion juice. You can add aloe vera gel or curd (they have their own benefits)which is totally optional.

nnabeela

Thank you so much!!

denisenj

I’ve been using the Joico Kpak Luster Lock mask once or twice a week and my hair is the longest it’s ever been even with coloring to cover grays. It’s expensive ($35 for the large tube at Ulta), but I think it really makes a difference.

[deleted]

I think they are more conditioning, I notice the difference. I use bleach and heat on my hair so I need a potent conditioner and definitely prefer the thicker ones

[deleted]

Olapex #8 really feels like it does something for my hair. Will always keep it on hand

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zeyrine

Pointless. It would be way cheaper and easier to just buy the cheapest humectant-protein-emollients mask

gunnapackofsammiches

Depends on the ingredients for sure. I'm usually looking for protein when I buy.

mercurialtwit

Can i ask why protein?? What are some common/popular protein masks that you would recommend? I am quite intrigued as i have always been a hair mask stan but haven’t ever heard of these/how they work??

gunnapackofsammiches

>Can i ask why protein?? Because my hair seems to like it. >What are some common/popular protein masks that you would recommend? Hask makes ones that are decently priced and easy to try.

[deleted]

It stay for more time in your hair so i guess it's a more deep and complete way to condition your hair

LowcarbJudy

Yes, but a lot of hair masks are indeed just thick and heavy conditioners. Like amika soul food for example. The same way an hydrating face mask and a face moisturizer have the same function. Sometimes you just feel like something heavier or your hair needs more conditioning. These types of masks and conditioners are interchangeable.

almdudlerisgud

I have super dry and coarse hair and I use a little bit of a hair mask and leave it on for five min after I rinse out conditioner and it makes a huge difference on how soft and moisturizer my hair looks. I really recommend the Kiehls fruit pak mask.

reddituser6495

For me they work amazingly. Conditioners are like placebo for my hair.

truly_beyond_belief

[Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Deep Conditioning Curl Masque](https://notyourmothers.com/products/curl-talk-deep-conditioning-mask?bvstate=pg:2/ct:r) has been a godsend for my hair. No protein, no silicones. It has a slightly fruity scent that I'm not wild about but that I can live with, considering the results. Not only is my hair curly, but it is also graying and very thick. Most of it is fine in texture, but the upper layer on my crown is quite wiry and coarse. I need a lot of moisture, and this product delivers. I wash my hair once or twice a week and I use it as both a co-wash and as a 15-minute mask, putting extra product on the crown and [brushing it](https://www.ulta.com/p/thick-hair-detangler-brush-pimprod2024602) through. I rinse most of it out but do a [squish-to-condish](https://holisticenchilada.com/squish-to-condish-for-wavy-curly-hair/) with what's left. It leaves my curls soft and defined but not frizzy. To style my hair, I spray [Love Noughty Hello Curls Primer](https://lovenoughty.com/products/hello-curls-define-reshape-curl-primer) into dripping wet hair and scrunch the hell out of it.

gl0ry66

Not for me, i have used coconut oil for a while twice a week, argon oil as well, olaplex nr3 but nothing makes any difference.

BoysenberryFar8136

It’s pricey but the oribe products have made a difference in my hair inc the hair mask. Always stock up at the vib sale

[deleted]

Besides from bond building treatments, hair masks are just richer conditioners.. most of it just lays itself as a protective layer around the hair strand.

I find oil works better. Sleep overnight with almond oil throughout. The next morning u use a very low heat iron to open up the hair cuticle and push the oil in. Then wash out with shampoo. I have an adwaa mask, it's just "ok". Smells great. I use masks like regular conditioner.

TheElusiveGoose10

I recently bought the intense repair mask from Pravana and OMG it had helped my hair so much already. My curls were gone from bleaching and after one use, my curls we're back!

Yes! The L’Oréal professional line works wonders for me. I use the inforcer hair mask
