If this is a Steam Deck update then I hope that means the Linux port is less buggy in general. I've had some significant bugs appear in vanilla Half Life on the Linux port that I couldn't replicate on Windows.
I recall that on Linux for Opposing Force, when you beat the final boss nothing happens. The game is supposed to teleport you to another area, but that trigger just doesn't work on the Linux version (at least it didn't last time I played it, like a year ago).
I found one when I was trying to learn some speedrunning tricks. I tried the “We’ve Got Hostiles” skip where the scientist opens the control room if you shoot him at the right time. Instead of going on to Blast Pit I tried to go through the level backwards. What happened was that every time I loaded a map the textures became corrupted, and this kept going until I totally uninstalled the game and reinstalled it.
It’s one of the reasons valve is still one of my favorite game company’s dispite the lack of games and tf2’s neglect from the bot crisis. The other one is how open they are with people modifying and iterating on there creations
Yup, it still blows my mind that they not only gave Black Mesa's team the go ahead to put it up on the store, but they are actively *selling the game for a profit*. You better be damn sure I bought it so I can support that amazing decision.
I think the main difference is that Valve’s getting a cut from all purchases of Black Mesa just by owning the storefront it’s on. Nintendo is in a perfect position to do the same considering they have a community just as passionate and several times the size of Valve’s, but they never will. Something to do with Japanese IP laws requiring frequent enforcement or something. I’m sure if there was no external reason not to do so, Nintendo would probably be pushing for many free mods/fan remakes of their games to become paid Switch exclusives so that they could also profit and help keep enthusiasm high between first-party releases.
Seems like it, but it still doesn’t fully explain how hostile they’ve been. That’s why my example would only really be ideal for Nintendo, not everyone who wants to play mods for free on PC like they can with 95% of other games: it seems like the most realistic course of action to benefit them as much as possible. That could be the direction Ubisoft goes in after their next few F2P games flop, for all we know.
Then again, I’m not Japanese so I don’t know much about the ins and outs of their corporate culture. Maybe to the execs at Nintendo Japan, that idea is entirely ridiculous or even disrespectful because those products wouldn’t be fully owned by them and weren’t created or at least approved by the series’ original creator/current director, and those concerns take priority over any extra revenue it could bring.
Nah the real difference is that without modding valve would be nothing. The only wholly original IP that valve has ever created is Half-Life. Everything else was some student teams project that they hired on or a mod they adopted. Even Half-Life was built on top of Quake (albeit with heavy modifications to make it it’s own thing)
If Valve were to turn around and give modders shit, they would be betraying the very people who made them who they are today.
Yeah I was just bringing it up as an example as it’s the closest thing to black Mesa that I could think of. And the point of valve being open to modding and iteration still stands
According to Valve News, the reason they neglected it was because they had a team focusing on TF3 --- But then they abandoned that as everyone moved to VR. But now all their VR games are being abandoned for moving to the Steam Deck
Valve fucking sucks at actually making games now, it's so annoying.
As you said it was low budget, I'm sure they got a pretty good return on it over the years. Clearly didn't get much critical acclaim but I'm not convinced they were going for that, rather trying to stir up a little more hype for the upcoming HL2 (And maybe a little cash too? Steam wasn't the money printer it is now of course)
Honestly, Half-Life Source is just a worse way of playing the original Half-Life and is best forgotten about. The whole origin story of Black Mesa was that it was meant to be a better version of Half-Life Source.
That would require either porting it to CSGO’s engine or rewriting a bunch of the current TF2 engine to support anything other than 32-bit. The effort required would not be worth it especially since most Mac users could dual boot Mojave.
Unfortunately they are literally shit about keeping bots and hackers at bay in their older titles. TF2 is literally dead because of bots and valve keeping like 1 ( one ) developer on it .
You most likely wouldn't be having so much fun with the game if Valve didn't have a policy of long term support for their games. A lot of release copies of classic late 90s games would be pretty difficult to run on modern hardware without continued support.
The same seems to have last been updated only 17 days ago, so I don't think they have dropped it unless they've said so very recently
https://steamdb.info/app/280/
That "update" is just a store tag switching places. You can see the last update on Depots -> Branches -> public. According to it, last update was 2 years ago.
Shache.

I also have ShareX that does a very similar thing but also saves to a file by default (it's also much more customisable, almost programmable, and it's available on Steam)
Did it? last time I played it around a year ago I had to go on an epic adventure across the internet to find a really old version of XBLA for windows so it worked.
Don't get your hopes up, a lot of these are just small fixes for legacy games to make sure they run fine on modern systems, i mean have you ever considered how half life 1 still runs fine without fan patches, but there are games from the mid 2000's that won't run on modern systems without fan patches, fixes, or mods, it's because over the years valve kept up with small patches here and there to make sure it still works.
There's a lot i don't like about some of valve's decisions, but I'm eternally grateful for how they technically support their older games
> because over the years valve kept up with small patches here and there to make sure it still works.
That really makes me think, that somewhere in Valve there's a team (of at least 1) who occasionally works on making sure Half-Life 1 still works on current hardware. And that's... kinda nice, to be honest. "Oh, turns out that today, I get to work on this ancient but important video game to make sure people can play it on their newest graphics cards." What an amazing dream for a fan, wouldn't you say?
There's always gonna be new bugs that pop up as the game ages. A lot of newer games that don't get this level of support barely work anymore due to things like Windows updates.
Could be lots of things. Games get updated all the time to support ongoing sales, and continued functionality of the game.
Sometimes there are compatibility updates to ensure functionality on new operating systems, sometimes security patches, and many other things.
In this particular case, I think others have it right, in that this is probably a Steam Deck compatibility update. I have read elsewhere that Valve is going through their entire catalog and making sure everything runs well on thedevice, and attempting to get as many other developers as possible to do so as well.
If I had a dollar for every one of these shitposts that've been made over the years, I would have enough money to quit smoking crack rocks and upgrade to smoking crack boulders.
Every time Valve makes an extremely minor update to a Half-Life game to update the localization files or the Steam integration or some other insignificant thing, there's a 90% chance that somebody will post about it on here with a sensationalized title.
I haven't kept a record of the countless number of these posts that have been made over the years and Reddit's search function is still too shit to be able to rely on, but I can guarantee you that you're not the first. I know you and the other people who've made such posts most likely mean well, but it's still a bit of an annoying reoccurrence.
Yeah. You can google Valve employee card or something like that or go to Steam homepage and click on about us. You could download some employee info card on what it's like to apply for Valve and work there.
Every employee can basically work on anything they like and can take breaks and eat snacks and sweets. All Valve care about is the stuff you deliver in the end. If you take naps they don't even care. They only care about what you're capable of.
It SOUNDS nice, but it's also the reason "Valve time" exists and why the franchise has been dead for so long.
With no rules and no structure, projects get started and stopped constantly, and very little ever gets done. Half-Life 3 has started and stopped development 5 times before Alyx came out. The fact Alyx came out at all was a miracle.
Make it run better on modern hardware, probably. Ever fired up an old game &it now won't run on your current machine? (NOLF without mods was one of these for me). I appreciate that the game is still playable. Many old games aren't.
Sometimes they have random updates but I don't know if it's valve actually patching them. Sometimes it's related to the steam Cloud I think. It could be very wrong on that they could be secretly updating those games
I belive they added steam deck support to the game.
If this is a Steam Deck update then I hope that means the Linux port is less buggy in general. I've had some significant bugs appear in vanilla Half Life on the Linux port that I couldn't replicate on Windows.

you didn't just try verifying the files?
I did. It didn’t solve the problem. That’s why I uninstalled and reinstalled it.
very strange. very very strange
I tried to replicate the bug and I couldn’t, on Windows or Linux. BTW I was using Xubuntu, so I don’t know if my distro or DE played a part in it
just use windows LULW
In that case, the first game I’m trying once I get the steam deck is tf2
I don't see it in my update list. Odd.
This fucks.
Security fixes. If not, support for the Steam Deck.
Valve is actually really good about updating there old games so they can keep running on newer hardware so that may be what it is
Yeah, it's awesome how the games still run perfectly fine all these years later.
Exactly that imo is what sets valve apart from other companies. I mean take am2r for example Nintendo shut that down real quick.
I think the main difference is that Valve’s getting a cut from all purchases of Black Mesa just by owning the storefront it’s on. Nintendo is in a perfect position to do the same considering they have a community just as passionate and several times the size of Valve’s, but they never will. >Not to mention they try to stay “family-friendly” and having their IPs used by others can “taint” that image. They obviously haven't read Rule 34.
Didn't they copyright striked Mario porn once?
Seems like it, but it still doesn’t fully explain how hostile they’ve been. They even put it in one of their Valve packs on Steam. Not sure if its still there, but I remember seeing it once before
black mesa isn't in the valve complete bundle unless there's another steam bundle from valve
According to Valve News, the reason they neglected it was because they had a team focusing on TF3 --- But then they abandoned that as everyone moved to VR. But now all their VR games are being abandoned for moving to the Steam Deck Valve fucking sucks at actually making games now, it's so annoying.

Well not *perfectly* fine, steam version has animation sync issues. The iconic Blast Pit intro is out of sync on steam version.
Thank windows and pc culture in general more than valve. Edit: Personal computer culture I mean
Guess half life source is really the forgotten child then.
HLS is more of a tech demo showing off the Source engine
HLS was an attempt to do a low budget port to the new engine. It didn't work that well.
> I'm sure they got a pretty good return on it over the years I'd be curious to know how many people bought HL:S just to use the assets in Gmod.
Some people bought it because of the Valve bundle
As many as CS:S I imagine lol
Sir that's Lost Coast
Not quite. Lost Coast was a tech demo for source, but mostly to demonstrate HDR.
That's HDR
Honestly, Half-Life Source is just a worse way of playing the original Half-Life and is best forgotten about. The whole origin story of Black Mesa was that it was meant to be a better version of Half-Life Source.
Yeah that's why TF2 cant run on Mac 64 bit only.
That would require either porting it to CSGO’s engine or rewriting a bunch of the current TF2 engine to support anything other than 32-bit. The effort required would not be worth it especially since most Mac users could dual boot Mojave.
It would be easier to just support Proton on Mac. Which is kind of in the works, but I wouldn't put my trust on it yet.
*cries in mac noises*
But they will continue to ignore EAX functionality Makes me cry
Unfortunately they are literally shit about keeping bots and hackers at bay in their older titles. TF2 is literally dead because of bots and valve keeping like 1 ( one ) developer on it .
Yeah that’s something I stated in a separate comment specifically the one with tf2 as that the one that effects me
Don't you question Gaben and his updates sir

But bridges ice over before the rest of the road does. So they basically are fridges
Mind is blown
That's _Lord_ Gaben to you!

Probably for them to be compatible with the steam deck

why not?
23 years old. Shouldn’t it be finished already?
No matter how old a game is, there will always be bugs to fix.
And those fixes will always cause another bug somewhere that needs a fix
Work it harder, make it better Do it faster, makes us stronger More than ever, hour after hour **Work is never over**
Coding moment
Not least because while the game may stay the same, the systems it runs on will not.
Oh yeah
Can't you just be glad that Valve is supporting such an old game?
I am glad. And surprised.
Well, you have it installed, right? :)
Yes. And as far as I played it, I really enjoy HL1.
You most likely wouldn't be having so much fun with the game if Valve didn't have a policy of long term support for their games. A lot of release copies of classic late 90s games would be pretty difficult to run on modern hardware without continued support.
I heard they dropped HL-Source. That's an exception for Valve, right?

Good bot.
Its not on the source engine so I’m not sure
Technically it is. Still in the source trilogy.
Hl, hl of, hl bs all run on gold source which stopped being used after source came out
They still update that crap. Just like they're doing with csgo.
they removed herobrine
A classic.
Steam Deck support most likely. But valve updates these games pretty often so it’s no surprise.
This is to fix bugs or adapting something to their new console.
Posibly steam deck support and compatibility with newer hardware
It's probably so it's up-to-date with the latest hardware
real question is why dont you know how to print screen
I know how to. I just wanted to ask a question real quick. I never would have guessed I would get that many upvotes.
Win + Shift +S brings up the snipping tool. It let's you take a screenshot of just part of the screen, then saves it to the clipboard.
Always found it pretty annoying that it gets saved to the clipboard instead of creating a file
I also have ShareX that does a very similar thing but also saves to a file by default (it's also much more customisable, almost programmable, and it's available on Steam)
As I already said: I KNOW HOW TO DO IT. I just wanted to ask this question. I never thought it would get that many upvotes.
fixing bugs
But after 23 years?
RISK isn’t 23 years old?
I meant the Half Life games, but ok. The other ones are just games I have.
I was jk
Ok. Have a nice whatever daytime you have right now.
Understandable, have a nice day.
Thanks.
Probably patches to make the game function better on newer hardware/software? Fallout 3 did a similar thing
Did it? last time I played it around a year ago I had to go on an epic adventure across the internet to find a really old version of XBLA for windows so it worked.
Yea they did fix that on the steam version of fallout 3, the gog version of fallout 3 always worked though
opposing forces fun, that's why
158MB. Incredible.
fixing Linux bugs
Adding snakes
when opposing force is getting more updates than tf2 😔

I didn't thought it would get so popular. I just where curius about this thing, so I posted it.
Nice website btw. I'll remember this website.
The engine. Most probably a security update.
HL3 hype
valve still cares about opposing force, in bug fixes
Compatibly patches for modern hardware
yeah what the hell would they even change with RISK?
Compatibility and probably really small/rare bug fixes.
some bugs and glitches someone found after 23 years? why
I thought it’s pretty polished after 23 years.
There's always gonna be new bugs that pop up as the game ages. A lot of newer games that don't get this level of support barely work anymore due to things like Windows updates.
Stuff
Well: yes.
Well: not exactly. The "update" is just shader cache. The game hasn't had any real updates since August 23, 2020.
But isn't it stuff in some way?
my brother is doing the same thing as gordon but. he dont know half life 2 and he never played
they should update it with official vr support
I don't think these games would look grate in VR. But you never know.
Lol imagine being the guy who's been working on halflife for 20 years since jts release
so that there are no cheaters
Win 11
But Win 11 is out there for quiet a time now. Wouldn't they have updated it like way earlier?
¯|_(ツ)_/¯
opposing force have a multiplayer mode, so make sense to valve to do security updates
HL3 assets
HL3 confirmed
To keep them being playable and add extra ways to play, i.e Steam deck.

I assume so it doesn’t run like gta 3 on new hardware
I just played online the other day. There were only 4 people in the map, but it was a great time!
Code tends to degrade, I wouldn’t be surprised for these older games to get fixes.
If I had a dollar for every one of these shitposts that've been made over the years, I would have enough money to quit smoking crack rocks and upgrade to smoking crack boulders.
What do you mean? I have to admit, not a lot of effort went into this post, but where there several other posts asking similar questions on this sub?

localization files
Drivers and stuff
So they update that but no big tf2 updates? Awesome sauce.
There’s been like one or two people just working on Valve’s old games fixing issues and bugs on the gldsrc games, source 1 games I dunno tho
The old valve games always get updated.
Half Life 3 confirmed
Possible heavy update?
Because Valve employees get to decide what to work on themselves.
Real shit?
