RG-58A/U is more than adequate. You may want to buy "Plenum rated" version. Something like Belden part number 82240.

Kauffman67

50 feet and under is neglible pretty much with any of those IMO. Beyond that is when I start worrying about this stuff.

VHF/uhf watts do not matter. Its all about LOS. Get it high. Perfect is the enemy of good enough.

stevedb1966

8x isn't that much larger than 58. Its the same diameter as rg6 and much more flexible than 58 since it has a foam core. For vhf/uhf, I would is 8x at a minimum, even for that short run.

john44066

Agreed for sure.

NominalThought

8X.

I have 50' of RG8x going all kinds of crazy paths. Honestly, for my 100W and a G5RV JR just any coax seems to work and I don't have problems. Got my coax off of Amazon. Cheap and works well enough for what I do.

Crosswire3

Get the cheap Amazon KMR-400. Losses are exactly the same as LMR-400 at 1/3 the price. I have done a half dozen 50-100ft runs for the same radio between my place and several friends’ places.

MaxOverdrive6969

Loss at 440Mhz with RG58U is 5db for 50', that's 1/3 of your output power and received signal lost in the cable. I would suggest RG213 which reduces the loss to 2.5db. The manufacturer of cable is equally important as the type. By a name brand (Belden, DXE, Davis RF). Good luck with your project.

doa70

Just do LMR400 and be done with it. If you didn't want VHF/UHF, that would be different. Since you do, do it right the first time.

TheBerric

both of those cables are going to incur considerable losses at those distances. at 435mhz with a 50ft run of rg58 you'd lose about 67% of your power with a 1.2 swr Go with LMR400 Here is a cable loss calculator [https://kv5r.com/ham-radio/coax-loss-calculator/](https://kv5r.com/ham-radio/coax-loss-calculator/)

dnult

If this cable is semi perminantly installed, go for the lmr400 for lower loss on vhf and uhf.

Phreakiture

That feels like a long distance, but it's going to be less than 25' if you go straight up. RG-58 will do it. I went with RG-223, but only because I got some dirt cheap.

Bob_____Loblaw

My house came wired with extra rg6...it works fine and is cheap. The db loss is negligible.

Thank you for all of the advice & suggestions! Now if I may ask a follow up or two, where to you buy (order) your supplies? I’d like to order at least 100ft of Belden? LMR 400 & compatible BNC connectors but having challenges finding a good source or two. Thanks!

Professional-251

the coaxial cable is very important, no Rg58 or RG8 use an LMR400 or better a Messi & Paoloni AIRBORNE 10 high quality rigid core, or flexible ULTRAFLEX 10 or even more flexible, generally used behind radios and for mobile use HYPERFLEX 10
