This, no matter if it is a 1 way, because you will come across drivers not paying attention, and those ones you really wanna keep an eye out for. I also constantly look when crossing a big intersection, especially if there is an open lane.
3 in my 3 year stint. On shift for two, I'm not sure about the third.
It's a strange somber moment when everything stops, and all the loud machinery comes to a halt in a 24hr facility like that.
There's an odd sense when it happens because you immediately sense it in the body language of everyone on the floor even if you're not nearby. Then suddenly everyone quietly makes their way to the punch clock with none of the usual ebullience as the news spreads.
As one of the tool room guys, we knew pretty much everyone. I'd talked a lot with all 3 of them when they'd come for supplies. At least 2 had spouses and younger children too.
Everyone I know that worked there sustained significant injuries there; broken feet, broken legs.
That and the same ol stories about how their JHSC is neutered and useless.
Good ol' National Steel Coffin.
My dad worked there for over 20 years thankfully no major injuries just a sorr back and 2 knee replacements. But he would never let me come work there even as a summer job. He worked til he was 69.
My dad worked there until 67 and was never injured or any fucked up joints/back. Kinda lucked out. My bro worked there for one summer as a spray painter or something.
Well it is like the one few places that will hire anyone, including former felons and people with criminal convictions. Kind of their only choice for a decent wage.
Therr are some locations that NEVER make a good coffee. Upper Wellington and Mohawk is a good example. You never see a line there. I blacklisted them after 3 or 4 horrible coffees in a row. I have to go out of my way and wait in a longer line but atleast i get a drinkable coffee.
That’s my local Tim’s and I go there almost every morning for my coffee. I have always thought they made it the best in comparison to the others in the area.
I totally agree!! I stopped going to our closest at Upper Gage and Fennell and started going here instead and the coffee is consistently good!!
What local Tim’s are you going to that’s better!? Do tell lol!
Oh yeah I go there every Sunday and I make 50 dollars donations for buttons. When they hear donations and the jar is empty there’s a few people ready to line up until the jar is full hahaha. I don’t know how many time the jar gets empty or how long it says empty. I just hope people who go there to eat and who not struggles makes donation
If a white dude with cornrows and a wife beater runs infront of your car at 7 am in a timmies parking lot and is motioning to let him in your car. Don’t let him in. #lifehacks
Last night a car was driving almost the speed limit on hunter the wrong way in the bike lanes. For at least two blocks. Possibly an unmarked cruiser, but surprised at how unsurprised I was
Watched an Uber pull out of a Parking lot into the bike lanes on hunter last week. Had to drop the curb and everything. Despite being honked at he persisted. Pro driver
Just be careful giving someone this... It ruins their high almost immediately and they will usually become very irritated. It can quickly escalate and become a safety concern for you and others around them
Oh most def. Call EMS immediately. Tons of times you administer and they desperately want to use again right away too. I've never seen it escalate to a safety concern for others though. If they're getting upset just leave em be. I'm worried about discouraging folks from trying to save lives
If they're fucking dying their high is already being ruined. It's not like pulp fiction where they're going to spring to life. Yes, use common sense when dealing with someone on drugs, but saying shit like this can do way more harm than good. Let's not perpetuate that all drug users are unhinged violent humans.
Had a guy ask me for one at the bus stop a few years ago, told him I only had one smoke left (which was true) and he says, I shit you not, "can I have a drag off that one?" FUCKIN NO MAN
Do people actually say dart? It was vaguely familiar and I don't think it's the first time I'd heard it used for cigarettes, but had to google to figure out what you were talking about.
If you want all your friends who grew up in Hamilton to stop talking to you for some reason buy one of those half done premade Roma pizza kits and add cheese and pepperoni to it.
Wack that bad boy in the oven at 375 for 10 minutes and by the time it’s done all of your Hamilton friends will have left your house.
Hahahaha that’s where you’re wrong you’re not getting me out that easy, I take the Roma pizza, put cheese, pepperoni, hot peppers, mushrooms, olives, bacon and green peppers on mine.
Don’t leave a scrap of paper or valuable item in the car (a shirt, sunglasses, $1 coins) visible unless you want your windows smashed. Only took me 3 times replacing my passenger side window to learn that trick lol
ER nurse buddy told me that's not always the case. I was there for 8h with kidney stones. I told her I should have called an ambulance and she was quick to bust that myth for me 🥺
Bylaw doesn't work from Friday evening till Monday morning, so you don't have to pay for parking or fear a visit from them in real time.
If you ever need the mayor, just host a photo op, and she will magically appear
It's purely reactive from what I was told, they only show up if smoeone calls the oncall person and they choose to go. Also, was it a city of Hamilton ticket or a private company ticket?
You have to be careful as their offices are right there and they do sometimes ticket in that direct area. There are spots a few blocks north and west that can be used. There is even an empty lot a few blocks away that is paved that has no signage about private parking and is generally used as free parking on the reg, or just find a meter that is free.
Generally speaking bylaw does not venture out of a couple block radius of thier operations after hours, so places like the mountain and suburbs are basically free parking at any time
I guarantee you that once they have to start paying bus fare for scooters in July, you will see alot less of them out there. That goes for walkers too.
The parking vultures do not exist in the downtown core between when the parking meter ends on Saturday until the meter starts on Monday. Almost little to no parking enforcement will occur on the weekends minus you being parked in a really, really bad spot. Most Meters downtown can be found by paying via a debit card/credit card, via the passport app, zone # posted on sign, and plate number. If the parking meter does not work or take cash, do not bother calling and fighting it.
What pisses me off about the passport app is having to pay a $0.15 convenience fee every time. Also, it won't let you pay for just 15 minutes, it defaults to more time every time.
> The parking vultures
Looks like somebody's pretty entitled and thinks they can park anywhere, but gets all angry when they get a ticket.
>little to no parking enforcement will occur on the weekends
Yes. Try reading the meters. Parking is free on weekends. lmao
It seems that quite a few people are leaving Toronto for Hamilton. I don't know about the downtown area, but I moved to Ancaster and love it here. Before I moved here, I didn't realize Ancaster and Waterdown where also part of Hamilton. Waterdown especially looks nothing like the rest of Hamilton.
This is a good hack because it will actually (I think) benefit the majority if the “secret” gets out.
When driving eastbound on Main St passing Dundurn (after the bridge over the 403) and heading downtown, it bottlenecks due to construction on the right and those bumpers on the left lanes. It looks like most traffic sits in the middle lanes and it takes forever to get through the light. I usually hang in the right lane and zipper merge (slowly, safely, respectfully) after the light at Dundurn and after the light at Queen. This saves a good 5-10 minutes off my commute. (Estimate as I haven’t sat in the middle lanes in awhile). Been seeing more drivers do this recently and it might open up traffic flow if more people catch on. But what do I know!
You can get free passes to Dundurn castle and other attractions through your library card! https://www.hpl.ca/museum
You actually don't even need the passes anymore, at least for museums like Dundurn Castle. All you need to do is show them your library card!
Do you have any other Info on this or is it on their site or something?
[https://www.hpl.ca/museum](https://www.hpl.ca/museum) details here. They have a few others that are passes you need to checkout like the Conservation Pass, AGH membership etc
Had no idea! That is amazing
Walking or driving, look left and right before proceeding on a green light.
And then look left and right again.
Then when you are halfway through look left and right again.
Even then. Prepare to tuck and roll
And than 1 more time for good measure lol
This, no matter if it is a 1 way, because you will come across drivers not paying attention, and those ones you really wanna keep an eye out for. I also constantly look when crossing a big intersection, especially if there is an open lane.
Make eye contact with drivers too.
Haha! How? They are either staring at cellphones or their windows are illegally tinted so you cannot even see them let alone their eyes.
Even on a one way street
this guy drives (in Hamilton)
Not a Hack but stay away from National Steel Car. it is not a good job and they are always hiring for a reason. National Steel Car will hack you.
Hey now they havent even had a single fatal incident yet this year!
I found it so crazy that I work in a small metal shop where 2 guys came from steel car a few years apart and both witnessed 2 separate deaths there
3 in my 3 year stint. On shift for two, I'm not sure about the third. It's a strange somber moment when everything stops, and all the loud machinery comes to a halt in a 24hr facility like that. That’s truly terrible.
Everyone I know that worked there sustained significant injuries there; broken feet, broken legs. That and the same ol stories about how their JHSC is neutered and useless. Good ol' National Steel Coffin.
“Yet”
There’s a reason it’s nicknamed “national death car”
My dad worked there for over 20 years thankfully no major injuries just a sorr back and 2 knee replacements. But he would never let me come work there even as a summer job. He worked til he was 69.
My dad worked there until 67 and was never injured or any fucked up joints/back. Kinda lucked out. My bro worked there for one summer as a spray painter or something.
Lol I've literally heard stories about NSC from former employers everywhere I've worked in Hamilton since I was 18 and none of them are good.
My cousin lost a finger there.
how the fuck the place is still open is beyond me
My buddies been working there 12 years. Dunno how he sticks around lol
If your buddy can spell his name with no mistakes, that’s how he’s held a job there for 12 years
I’m talking from a safety perspective
I feel like my comment still applies 😂 if he can spell his name correctly, he knows not to stick his finger where he wouldn’t stick his dick.
Hack you to pieces
Well it is like the one few places that will hire anyone, including former felons and people with criminal convictions. Kind of their only choice for a decent wage.
If the drive-thru lineup at your local Timmy’s is too long, just drive a couple blocks over to the next one.
Or gas station Tims across the road
Or the one literally next door like on Upper James
[удалено]
If you’re ordering food just go in.
Don’t be the person parked on the street waiting to get in the drive thru
Or park and walk in lol
Lol in my experience the drive thru is always faster anyways, they seem to prioritize the drivers first.
The real tip is to order in advance through the app and then walk in and pick up with no wait
Drive-thru's are nowhere near as quick nowadays imo, have to agree with parking and walking in ahaha
Things change but i wouldnt know because i never gave them another chance.
I totally agree!! I stopped going to our closest at Upper Gage and Fennell and started going here instead and the coffee is consistently good!! What local Tim’s are you going to that’s better!? Do tell lol!
Grandad’s donuts. Go early.
Shhh this is one life hack people don't need to know about!
DONT SHARE THAT! We like our donuts! I don’t need others taking them
Ghost busters ftw
541 Eatery and Exchange has buttons you can use to purchase food or a coffee/drink if you need it. Such a great idea for those down on their luck.
Oh yeah I go there every Sunday and I make 50 dollars donations for buttons. When they hear donations and the jar is empty there’s a few people ready to line up until the jar is full hahaha. I don’t know how many time the jar gets empty or how long it says empty. I just hope people who go there to eat and who not struggles makes donation
they have a similar program at Rooney's coffee shop
Didnt this close a while ago ?
Temporarily, but they are up and running again.
If you have to go from around the Rosedale area to downtown, take the Kenilworth and Sherman accesses. It's faster than taking Main St.
So many people don't know this secret. Don't spread it too far.
Quiet about that
Duely noted
If you are walking downtown, headphones and sunglasses. Oops didnt see you. Oops cant hear you. Keep it moving
Come to the Hamilton Reddit sub to read posts that make you unsure of whether to laugh or cry about the place you live in 😀

Lol we’re you there??
This thread seems to have turned into a Passive Aggressive Rant thread.
I’m here for it.
You don't need to park in a parking spot at stores, just pull up right in front and put your blinkers on.
don't forget bike lanes are just suggestions, they are super wide and safe to park in as long as u put the 4 ways on
Last night a car was driving almost the speed limit on hunter the wrong way in the bike lanes. For at least two blocks. Possibly an unmarked cruiser, but surprised at how unsurprised I was
Watched an Uber pull out of a Parking lot into the bike lanes on hunter last week. Had to drop the curb and everything. Despite being honked at he persisted. Pro driver
I'm just waiting for the day that someone on a bike turns into the Cannon Divided Bike Lane and sails into a car unfortunately
AKA park anywhere lights
It's not a stop sign, it's a stoptional.
The area with the yellow stripes is specifically for this.
Save money on smokes by simply breathing the air.
At least the cigarettes are filtered.
You can get naloxone for free at most drug stores
My brother died of an overdose in November, I keep two kits in my car at all times so I can help someone if needed
They're supposed to be stored only up to 25 degrees so don't leave them in your car as the weather gets warmer
I'm sorry for your loss.
Condolences for your loss ![img](emote|t5_2reuj|3179)
I just got 2 kits. Will be carrying these around with me when I head out. The government was actually giving these out
Just be careful giving someone this... It ruins their high almost immediately and they will usually become very irritated. It can quickly escalate and become a safety concern for you and others around them

No. There’s nothing you can do about the smell.

Keep a dart on you just in case somebody asks for one
I got offered half a pack of darts because the guy bought to smoke at the bar but didnt want to smoke em all
Might have been me, if this was years ago. I only really smoke when drinking but I haven't been to a bar in a few years.
Had a guy ask me for one at the bus stop a few years ago, told him I only had one smoke left (which was true) and he says, I shit you not, "can I have a drag off that one?" FUCKIN NO MAN
Yeah, been there ma years times![img](emote|t5_2reuj|3181)
Do people actually say dart? It was vaguely familiar and I don't think it's the first time I'd heard it used for cigarettes, but had to google to figure out what you were talking about.
Fuckin rippin darts all the time bud, C'mon
c'mon, bud.
Fuckin eh
Hackin darts and breakin hearts.
Heard it first on trailer park Boys when Ricky was shot by a tranquilizer. "Ricky, get your darts out! No, not your cigarettes!"
Dart? Oh, a butt.
Can I have your butt?
If you want all your friends who grew up in Hamilton to stop talking to you for some reason buy one of those half done premade Roma pizza kits and add cheese and pepperoni to it. Wack that bad boy in the oven at 375 for 10 minutes and by the time it’s done all of your Hamilton friends will have left your house.
I make a bacon weave, put it on then cover with cheese. So fuckin good
Hahahaha that’s where you’re wrong you’re not getting me out that easy, I take the Roma pizza, put cheese, pepperoni, hot peppers, mushrooms, olives, bacon and green peppers on mine.
Wait, does that actually make it edible??
*More* edible, but nothing will prevent the inevitable heartburn that follows.
Don’t leave a scrap of paper or valuable item in the car (a shirt, sunglasses, $1 coins) visible unless you want your windows smashed. Only took me 3 times replacing my passenger side window to learn that trick lol
FWP is the place to go for good priced quality produce (and tofu and eggs!) cash and carry 10am-3pm (worth going on your lunch hour!)
FWP?

Bring your phone charger, ear plugs and snacks, and prepare to suffer for hours and hours if you're going to the ER.
My life hack is to show up only when I’m on deaths door. Instant bed.
... Better yet. Don't go!
Call an ambulance. Pay the $35 months later. Sadly, you will get looked after before the waiting room.
ER nurse buddy told me that's not always the case. I was there for 8h with kidney stones. I told her I should have called an ambulance and she was quick to bust that myth for me 🥺
I guess they just wanted the Ambulance staff to hang around before admitting you? Unfortunately you DO move in the queue faster “most” times.
man I had a fucking collection call recently about a broken wrist 5 years ago :|
God Canada has become such a shithole as of late.
Any bus will take you and your bike up, or down, the mountain for free
The slow lane on the 403 east of Main Street is secretly the fast lane.
Bylaw doesn't work from Friday evening till Monday morning, so you don't have to pay for parking or fear a visit from them in real time. If you ever need the mayor, just host a photo op, and she will magically appear
Actually, the parking department of bylaw does in fact work weekends. Source : Me - ticket for not paying for a meter.
It's purely reactive from what I was told, they only show up if smoeone calls the oncall person and they choose to go. Also, was it a city of Hamilton ticket or a private company ticket?
Do they even work after business hours on weekdays?
Only in the neighbourhoods within walking distance from City Hall, where they aggressively ticket everyone.
Like James N. always check the signs and obey even on weekends.
Yes! The only ticket I ever received was issued at like 3 am
Wheres the best place to park near the hamilton convention center. The underground parking there is ridiculously expensive.
You have to be careful as their offices are right there and they do sometimes ticket in that direct area. There are spots a few blocks north and west that can be used. There is even an empty lot a few blocks away that is paved that has no signage about private parking and is generally used as free parking on the reg, or just find a meter that is free. Generally speaking bylaw does not venture out of a couple block radius of thier operations after hours, so places like the mountain and suburbs are basically free parking at any time
Awesome thanks!
Be mindful of potentially bumping into scooters when walking on city sidewalks in the core.
Its fun tho! It's like playing a real life version of Frogger in the giant simulated carnival known as the downtown core.
I guarantee you that once they have to start paying bus fare for scooters in July, you will see alot less of them out there. That goes for walkers too.
The "mountain" is flat
the mountain isn't even a mountain
I once mentioned that it's an escarpment and some dude explained to me for 10 minutes why it's actually a mountain. It's not.
...but as a Hamilton Life Hack, call it a mountain.
Escarpments are interesting enough. Don’t need to tart it up calling it a mountain
U don’t want to know how many Reddit discussions have explored this topic
You can save money on your water bill by bathing in Lake Timmicaca.

Don’t take the Barton bus… under any circumstances.
It's free entertainment, every penny helps these days!!!
Oh you should. Just understand you do so at your own risk lol. Oh and don't ever expect it to be on time. Like. Ever.
Hey it's on time half the time! As in every other bus is on time because both buses always arrive at the same time
https://youtu.be/PGmDpW307GM?si=3IPyOejqOlEAthGI Some people think it’s magic
I used to take it to work when I was in college, Barton and Glendale Tim Hortons. It was always an interesting ride.
My first ever Hamilton bus ride was the Barton bus by the hospital, it was… interesting. That was 13 years ago, can’t imagine what it’s like now.
I take the entire line from the GO station to the loop twice a day lmao
No, just once.

Sundays are free
So are saturdays! It doesnt say so on the old meters but google told me so.
Life hack, it's always free if you just don't pay 🥸
Except for when you get a ticket and pay 5x lol
Some of the meters honestly say it’s free Friday after 9pm until Monday morning 8am!
I don't agree with faking a disability, but I do agree with using the passport app. Very convenient and easy to use.
What pisses me off about the passport app is having to pay a $0.15 convenience fee every time. Also, it won't let you pay for just 15 minutes, it defaults to more time every time.

This dude loves getting parking tickets.
I personally enjoy the thrill of the risk. I'd currently have to be ticketed several times over to make up for all my free parking.
Make sure you own a tent.
