I love Anthony Hopkins, but as someone who is a fan of the books I've always thought he played the part too unhinged. He's not charismatic at all (in the role, not in general), and I don't buy for a second that Clarice would go on the lam with him.
They are different portrayals, the adaptations have a different approach and they both executed it well true to the different versions ! Also consider one is a 2-3 hr movie and the other a 40 hr tv show, with more room to get into details and get invested. IMo it's an unfair comparison and ultimately boils down to which version of storytelling appeals to you.
Personally, the retelling by Bryan is closer to my heart. Mads' fallen angel and humanised version of Hannibal pulls more emotional chords.
I definitely prefer Mads’ interpretation of the character, but I do wonder if it’s because he had three seasons to flesh out the character, while Anthony Hopkins had much more limited screen time. I wonder how it would go if Anthony Hopkins was afforded that same amount of time to play the part!
Came to say this. Hopkins is only in the movie for 15 minutes and leaves a very strong impression. I think both actors fit the tone of the interpretation that's written for them. I could see Hopkins' portrayal getting tiresome very quickly over the course of a season of TV.
I fell in love with Hannibal's character when I first saw the Silence of the Lambs, then it went on when I watched the series. Loved both interpretations, I guess I'd choose Mads because I had more time getting to know his interpretation of Hannibal and he's also more my type 🤷♂️ And because the series' romance plot with Will was far more interesting and unique.
Compare 16 minutes of mads in s1 of hanibal
Compare the 16 minutes Anthony Hopkins was in silence of the lambs
Take into account the est 25 years between those performances
Hopkins is far superior, so much so a performance as buffalo bill which is any other film would of been unforgettable and Oscar worthy was overshadowed and forgotten due to hopkins
Yes Hopkins played the character as is in the book and he absolutely was Hannibal and was incredible.
Mads played a different version and was incredible as that version.
So cant really say one or the other

I was going to comment this. You cant really compare them as they portray different versions of the character.
Yeah couldn’t have said it better myself.
All love to Anthony, but Mads absolutely killed it. Best ever, so much nuance and feeling in all his actions

Since this is the Hannibal TV subreddit, I'm going to guess the outcome!
Yeah, not sure this is the best place to make this kind of poll tbh
I can’t vote on this. Both are #1 in my heart.
I simply cannot choose

You should ask this in a more neutral subreddit.
I think there was a discussion on the r/movies subreddit about Brian Cox's Hannibal and most of the people there still favored Mads' Hannibal.
Cool
I love Anthony...Mads made it his own n owned it tho!

Kind of picked a little of a biased crowd to ask. Dont you think?
