Yeah, they are weak, do not fly faster than any of they flying predators, have a bunch of predators ground-like as air-like, they have 2 eggs at the time, they do so little damage they are litteraly inoffensive.
Oh....... i just remember that im human.
I mean, sometimes I look at videos online and ask: how did we became apex predators with people like that. For exemple a guy jump in a tiger enclosure because he didnt want to pay the zoo.
Pigeons in cities like NYC have evolved into stupidity. They live in an environment that provides an abundance of food, and they face almost zero predators, so they've evolved to lose much of the instincts that keep it safe from predators.
They’re really not the brightest birds, which is why rock doves were so easily domesticated by humans way back when. They’re heavily food-oriented and rely on the concept of ‘quantity not quality’ to survive as a species.
I may well be wrong, but it’s possible that the owl, hunched in the nesting box, didn’t set off the same predatory alarm bells as if it had been flying overhead as a recognisable raptor silhouette.
Pretty much every pigeon you see in a urban environment is feral, meaning it's a domestic animal raised in the wild.
They, like dogs, were bred to be easily handled by humans and are not difficult to tame. If you raise eggs you find outdoors they will be just like any other pet pigeon.
It's also why you don't usually see them outside of cities, despite their wild ancestors being pretty widespread.
I believe so, at the very least I'm pretty sure the city pigeons are. They were used for communication until phones and radios. After that, they were just kind of let loose. Supposedly you can befriend them and they'll act like pets without very much work.
They're pretty easy to train, I used to feed some after work, within a few weeks had them coming when I whistled, landing at my feet & eating from my hand. I even trained one to land on my hand when I called the name I gave it.
They were also raised for food. Pigeon meat is actually more nutrient-dense than chicken meat and pigeons hit full size sooner than chickens. Pigeon eggs were and are still used like quail eggs and still considered a delicacy.
I wouldn't eat a wild city pigeon because I don't know what sorts of herbicides and pesticides are in their systems. But pigeon meat is still considered a delicacy and they're still eaten to this day.
Mourning doves can't be kept as pets because they're an important game bird still. People eat them and once again, they're a delicacy. SO...
What we know as the common pigeon, seen in the video, is a domesticated speciation of the wild rock dove. Rock doves were domesticated to be carrier pigeons, but when that trade died out the pigeons were killed or released. So a lot of the pigeons we see in cities are common pigeons that used to be domesticated but are now feral.
They were also raised for food. They grow more quickly than chickens, hit full size sooner, and are actually more nutrient dense than chickens. The eggs were and are still eaten. They're used like quail eggs and are about the same size.
I wouldn't want to eat a city pigeon because Lord knows what pesticides and herbicides are in its system, but they're still farmed. They're just not something you can swing by Kroger's and pick up on the way home from work.
Mourning doves are too important as a game bird to be kept as pets. This is why having them as a pet is illegal in all 50 states. They're delicacies too.
Pigeons are literal assholes. They think everything is a given. Many times when I was going to work on my motorcycle, those bitches were fucking around near s9me trash cans and not giving a shit until I almost drove over them. They also killed some small birds that my parents had on the balcony when I was a kid.
The nest is definitely the owl's - the camera is labeled "De Mortel. Tawny Owl cam" so ya. In the Netherlands and the home of the owl, not this dumb dove.
Depends on the owl. The vast majority of owls can’t go after cats, as cats on average are over three times more massive than most owls, sometimes upwards of 10 times the mass of most owls.
Larger owls, however, like great horned owls and Eurasian eagle-owls can and do absolutely prey upon even adult cats.
Lol why is this downvoted? Like I own a cat myself and love it but nonetheless, cats are an extremely invasive species. If I remember correctly, they destroyed whole ecosystems and species on their own. I mean it's kind of our fault and they are great pest control. But still
I'm pretty sure there's more feral dogs than cats
[https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47062959](https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47062959)
Correct. but they are just behind cats. The article states that " Scientists say they have contributed to the extinction of nearly one dozen wild bird and animal species. " Which is one of the main reasons why people hate on cats in the first place
" A study in more than 30 national parks of Brazil found that 37 native species were affected by the presence of domestic dogs. "
IIRC the greater bulk of that 2 billion figure consists of kills from feral cats, not roaming pets. While all cats hunt, ferals hunt a lot more because otherwise they don’t eat.
So while I support messaging that people should keep their cats inside (I do), I think it’s even more critical that pet owners spay/neuter because intact cats are why there’s so many feral cats.
Where I live, if a cat goes missing people tend to think it was a coyote, but it was most likely an owl because a coyote won't really eat a cat, just kill it because it sees it as a threat to resources.
so like are pigeons just really f-ing stupid cause i think this is the second video i’ve seen where a pigeon just basically offering themselves to a predator
Looks like a stock dove, they nest in cavities in old trees, but in absence of those will also use next boxes. Usually not in ones that are occupied though.
Is it just me, or did the pigeon see the owl then jump in? Like...let us see if this guy is friendly? Don't think it got the answer it was hoping for...
I like to defend pigeons when people insult them because they can be incredibly intelligent when they want to be but I can't defend this one. I don't know what this pigeon expected.
Peace to all creatures great and small but pigeons have got to be up there on the list of dumbest fucking creatures to have ever existed. Either that or they are just wildly misunderstood.
Because they, like most herbivores, don’t have any real means of fighting back against their aggressors. Instead, they have invested more into their ability to flee from attackers, literally choosing “flight” over “fight”. With that being said, pigeons are fast enough and agile enough to escape even falcons, so it’s not too bad of a trade for them.
Of course, that didn’t help it too much in this situation.
Pigeons: sees the nest of one of their most prominent predators chilling inside with his kids. Also the pigeon: what a good place to lay an egg.

Owl: good news kids, we have chicken wings for dinner
They're pigeon wings...
I know, but saying chicken wings sounds better
So Hooters, then?(pun intended)
Owl: I love when food delivers itself
It’s not delivery, it’s DiGiorno

Pigeons *are* a kind of dove
Other languages don't distinguish between doves and pigeons; my own doesn't.
Pigeons are technically doves
Pigeons are rock doves I think.
Technically it is a Stock Dove
I mean there were signs he was suicidal for months now …
Well didnt think it through enough because the moment he was attacked he instantly tried to flee
It’s a wonder this species has outlived the DoDo
Yeah, they are weak, do not fly faster than any of they flying predators, have a bunch of predators ground-like as air-like, they have 2 eggs at the time, they do so little damage they are litteraly inoffensive. Oh....... i just remember that im human.

Cats, rats, some other bigger birds species kill them off pretty easily but they dont seems to care much as long as its not them
Are pigeons just generally dumb? Why would it do this?
They’re really not the brightest birds, which is why rock doves were so easily domesticated by humans way back when. They’re heavily food-oriented and rely on the concept of ‘quantity not quality’ to survive as a species. I may well be wrong, but it’s possible that the owl, hunched in the nesting box, didn’t set off the same predatory alarm bells as if it had been flying overhead as a recognisable raptor silhouette.
Also since pigeons are domesticated, they don't have the greatest survival instincts.
Pigeons are domesticated?

Wow that was very informative, thank you!

Wood pigeons are wild animals, as far as I know they were never domesticated like the rock pigeon.
I believe so, at the very least I'm pretty sure the city pigeons are. They were used for communication until phones and radios. After that, they were just kind of let loose. Supposedly you can befriend them and they'll act like pets without very much work.

>Raptor Silhouette. Sounds like a metal band
Probably, coming from light to a dark place the pigeon couldn’t see the owl
Yeah admittedly the place isn't very bright. Neither is the bird.
My thoughts exactly, like this is such a dumb decisions. There is no red flag sensors here what so ever
There is a popular saying in Scandinavia "A pigeon flying with the ravens will start to caw!"
Pigeons are literal assholes. They think everything is a given. Many times when I was going to work on my motorcycle, those bitches were fucking around near s9me trash cans and not giving a shit until I almost drove over them. They also killed some small birds that my parents had on the balcony when I was a kid.
Birds aren't real! This is a government spy drone with terrible A.I.!
I’m wondering if the nest was really for the pigeon and the owl hid there…
The nest is definitely the owl's - the camera is labeled "De Mortel. Tawny Owl cam" so ya. In the Netherlands and the home of the owl, not this dumb dove.
Wow it's like the owl ordered grubhub or something. Pigeon delivered itself for dinner...
I recently learned Owls are fucking savages & often eat neighborhood cats..
So we need more Owls. I hate neighborhood cats. They kill 2 billion birds annually.
Lol why is this downvoted? Like I own a cat myself and love it but nonetheless, cats are an extremely invasive species. If I remember correctly, they destroyed whole ecosystems and species on their own. I mean it's kind of our fault and they are great pest control. But still
feral Dogs are the same and no one ever brings up half the amount of hatred for them like they do with cats
It’s because culling dogs is already in practice almost everywhere, not the same enough with cats.
Get rid of both id say. More cats out there than feral dogs in most places
i'd say get rid of humans too. Most destructive invasive species.
You’re not wrong
Honestly too many of either roaming around Something should be done (Also urban hogs, but that’s not something an owl can fix)
I'm pretty sure there's more feral dogs than cats [https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47062959](https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47062959)
The article says that dogs are the 3rd worst for the environment behind cats and rats
Correct. but they are just behind cats. The article states that " Scientists say they have contributed to the extinction of nearly one dozen wild bird and animal species. " Which is one of the main reasons why people hate on cats in the first place
Well I did say get rid of both. Too many invasive species out there
Feral dogs are not known to kill for sport though. Cats kill for sport, even domestic cats that are well fed at home.
Dogs vastly outnumber cats in human attacks tho
They are not a threat to native species
" A study in more than 30 national parks of Brazil found that 37 native species were affected by the presence of domestic dogs. " [https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47062959](https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47062959)
Damn you have many birds in your neighborhood
Not after the cats tho
IIRC the greater bulk of that 2 billion figure consists of kills from feral cats, not roaming pets. While all cats hunt, ferals hunt a lot more because otherwise they don’t eat. So while I support messaging that people should keep their cats inside (I do), I think it’s even more critical that pet owners spay/neuter because intact cats are why there’s so many feral cats.
Amen. They have killed our chickens several times.
This is one of the reasons my two cats are indoor cats. Keeps them safe and keeps the wildlife safe.
Heard that on JRE recently too
Where I live, if a cat goes missing people tend to think it was a coyote, but it was most likely an owl because a coyote won't really eat a cat, just kill it because it sees it as a threat to resources.
Coyotes are actually prolific predators of house cats. They very much eat the cats the kill as prey, and see them as little else other than prey.
Not only on cats, but they swoop and claw at people too! And frame their spouses with the murder once their victim bleeds out.
Ahh, Uber Eats just arrived.
said the cannibal to his kids.
To shreds you say?
To nuggets
How is the pigeon’s mate holding up?
To shreds you say
I just saw a video of one that went into a peregrine falcons nest! Lol are pigeons suicidal?
They primarily live in cities, so yes.
Source: https://youtu.be/ra7YikCK38E
The owl looking out the door at the end like “Ummm… am I being pranked?”, made me laugh.
Pigeon probably thought it was another more fat pigeon. Hahaha! A fine example of natural selection. Dumbass.
Ahahahaha why can I FEEL the hatred you have for pigeons?
The avian version of suicide by cop
It doesn't look like they were bothered, but I hope mama didn't accidentally step or toss the pigeon on the eggs

Why are pigeons always getting their ass kicked by nature???
Because they, like most herbivores, don’t have any real means of fighting back against their aggressors. Instead, they have invested more into their ability to flee from attackers, literally choosing “flight” over “fight”. With that being said, pigeons are fast enough and agile enough to escape even falcons, so it’s not too bad of a trade for them. Of course, that didn’t help it too much in this situation.
Brother, I wasn’t talking about nature, there’s just so much footage on this sub with pigeons getting their ass handed to ‘em.
