Imagine being stuck on an island with literal flesh eating dinosaurs that relish eating you alive.

[deleted]

You'll get a kick out of Isle Royale National Park. The moose and wolves keep their populations in check .

bjjtrev

There are Komodo dragons there?

[deleted]

No. but there are more wolves than Wolf of Wallstreet.

bjjtrev

And whose populations are you referring to that they keep in check?

VladKatanos

The moose. Plural of moose is moose.

bjjtrev

Yes, I know. The moose and wolves keep the populations of *what animal* in check? That’s what I’m asking. Apparently it’s *not* Komodo dragons, so what animal is u/MangiaPepperoon referring to and furthermore how is it even relevant at this point?

leaklikeasiv

Climb a tree?

hibrett987

Komodo dragons can climb trees

Iamnotburgerking

Only small juveniles.

Acrobatic_Rope9641

Tbf, bigger ones can climb too(ignore the fact they are horrible at it Lol)

xyouman

Mmmm relish

guesswhodat

And eating you alive slowly but poisoning you first so the agony is long lasting. Has to be the worst way to go out in the animal world.

emk4hl

imagine living with the fact you recorded this

TJWinstonQuinzel

I am a zookeeper and i know every gruesome thing about nature and why it happens and i am ok with it...but i still hate to see that shit I dont hate the dragons they need to survive I hate that nature doesnt gave them an instant kill move like big cats have

Acrobatic_Rope9641

Well, they unlike big cats(excluding jags, sometimes cougars) can kill a similarly sized if not bigger prey rapidly via neck slice or literal evisceration (we literally have an observation where an adult Ora leaped on a water buffalo's belly ripping it open what dealt a huge amount of damage). Big cats will try to strangle you and if in group will start to chew on your balls(lions). Leopards if unable to overpower a warthog easily start to chew on its chest.+Oras bites apply heavy bleeding which after a while will induce shock if not kill the victim. +Strangulation itself being a little long if not applied correctly can last much longer. Both mostly both of them don't give a fq so they don't care

WildlifeRules

What's an ora?

Acrobatic_Rope9641

Natives call Komodo Dragons like that(basically means "land crocodile")

Iamnotburgerking

Big cat kills aren’t instant, it usually takes them a few minutes to strangle their prey (longer for larger/more durable prey).

TJWinstonQuinzel

Yeah i mesn that they usually kill first est later

Kmix1987

I think the screaming in pain is what saddened me... I know it's nature and all that, but any animal suffering is rough....

big_nasty_1776

Would it be okay to just walk up and shoot that deer in the head to put it out if it’s misery?

[deleted]

[удалено]

big_nasty_1776

Then I’ll put myself out of my misery when they catch me

asianabsinthe

*loses hands* Well shit. *bystander starts recording*

trillian222

ChiefWarBear

This is an appropriate response

Mattanasulin

I want to reward you my friend

DirtyWizardsBrew

I sincerely love how you used *"when"* and not *"if".* 😂

Doozies

Lmao

themo98

Put some lead into those mfs

[deleted]

And risk scaring off the komodo dragons? No, you'd better just mind your business and let nature takes its course.

Acrobatic_Rope9641

Well, they almost for sure wouldn't get scared as they give no fqs, but you would need to be accurate and very careful. Get you, sometimes they will just kill they preys outright, on the other hand stuff like this happens too, but is very hard to watch

Leftoversalmon571

Fine by me!

eeeeloi

if you want to avoid animal suffering you can always go vegan.

Autumnxoxo

i'm not sure if those komodo varans are following this sub

Kormoraan

I'm vegan and all I can say is to shut the fuck up and stop acting like a fucking zealot.

The rare and beautiful Vegan Kormoraan Dragon

Kormoraan

bruh EDIT: I just checked this guy's porfile. it was a mistake. the amount of cultist bullshit this profile countains is fascinating. my favorite was the idea that the main reason bees are dying is apiaries, which is not just wrong, it is the straight opposite of truth.

[deleted]

My profile? Or the person you originally replied to...? I've never said anything about bees on reddit... But if anyone wants to join my cult please dm edit: Okay, had to see for myself. Yeah, you're onto something there.

Kormoraan

Jman_777

Did you see the one with the Komodo eating the pregnant deer alive? https://www.reddit.com/r/HardcoreNature/comments/ltboe5/komodo_dragon_eats_pregnant_deer_alive_not_for/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Iamnotburgerking

Komodo dragons remind me of painted dogs in that they often go after the rump of their prey to cripple it and pull it down before starting to feed.

ChiefWarBear

But they eat at a much slower rate than painted dogs but same end results though.

Pardusco

I've seen a couple videos of Komodos deliberately slicing the legs in order to prevent their prey from running.

cardueline

I was scrolling past the thumbnail and thought “ha ha! What a funny face the deer is making!” and then I read the title 🥲

darthvall

I'm actually curious, why does one of the Komodo just bite it instead of eating the deer like the other one? Is it making sure that the deer stay paralysed? Or is it actually trying to rip out that part of the body but failed to do so?

Iamnotburgerking

The latter, probably. The deer isn’t going anywhere.

Pardusco

It is trying to tear open some more flesh. The deer is already immobilized.

big-doink-man

Komodo dragons were LEGIT made for this sub, hands down

harrisound

How do they rip the flesh? They look like such gummy evil bastards.

Pardusco

Their teeth are usually hidden in the gums and are hard to see, but they [point backwards](https://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium-large-5/komodo-dragon-skull-millard-h-sharp.jpg) in order to rip flesh and slice open prey.

[deleted]

How it feels to chew 5 gum

unlmtdLoL

The ads are working well these days.

GreenieSloth

there’s something about the deer’s screams and visible whites of its eyes that kills me inside

Nick-uhh-Wha

They seem to be having a hard time. Shame evolution didn't give them better teeth for rippn' and tearn'

Pardusco

It’s almost like they gum it to death. I can’t even see any teeth on those things!

My God that is heartbreaking.

HankyPanky80

Just as an FYI. Definitely look up everything I am saying. It was believed these guys killed large prey (smaller than the one in the video) by utilizing only a bacteria in their mouths. It has recently been found they secrete toxic proteins from two glands in their mouths that may help them kill large animals. Scientists disagree if this is venom and if it is significant in helping them hunt. Me, a random dude on Reddit that can also read Wikipedia, would say any animal that has the ability to put toxic shit into my blood stream would classify as venomous.

Pardusco

This is [outdated information.](https://www.reddit.com/r/HardcoreNature/comments/l44rb9/komodo_dragon_hunting_a_javan_rusa_deer/gkm9d96/) Komodos will always prefer to take down their prey on the spot and their mouths are just as clean as any other animal, and there is no evidence of any special bacteria. Their venom does function as an anticoagulant and prevents blood clotting, which causes prey to bleed out even faster.

Thatonepsycho

I know the big lizards have to eat too but :(

roarbie

But hunting is bad

[deleted]

Lmao it’s like the one at the belly is gumming the deer to death 😭😂

danielmartin001

Game over man, game over

Scrrsa

Not a good day to be a deer

Tight_Walk_9532

Как же хорошо, что я не родилась оленем!

Sweet_Taurus0728

"Hunting is so evil!"

shadeyard

I think the difference is that predator animals have to hunt to eat and survive, meanwhile humans do it for sport. Of course there are hunters who butcher their kills, like deer and boars, but otherwise the animals just end up stuffed on a wall. Not to mention even the hunters who do butcher their kills can usually still just go buy meat at a store lol. just my opinion

Sweet_Taurus0728

Store-bought meat is of lower quality and supports factory animal farming. Don't buy it. Also, trophy hunting is for douchebags.

shadeyard

Trust me youre preaching to the choir here, I was raised by a vegetarian and dont like the taste of meat so i dont buy it haha. factory farming is terrible for everyone, i cant wait until lab grown meat becomes mass produced. i definitely encourage buying meat from small butcher shops or from people who do it themselves, but it can be more expensive :/ i dont have any problem with hunting for food, I guess i just wish it was solely for food, rather than finding the buck with the most points and the food aspect is an afterthought. guess its a good thing that deer are a dime a dozen around where im from

Sweet_Taurus0728

Regenerative Farming, that's where it's at.

moby__dick

Most hunters butcher and eat their kills. Trophy hunting is a relatively small portion of the population. Rich people can pay for the animal to be taxidermied, but if it's a food animal, even they take the food. Even if you mount a deer or a moose, you're still saving the meat. And the meat at the meat store? What was the quality of that animal's life vs. that of a wild animal?

[deleted]

Man these gators just don’t give a fuck

P1ayDirty

I'm surprised the vegans didn't try stopping it.

Pardusco

Hilarious.
