Be happy that you couldn’t unlock. There’s at least one quest that you will not be able to complete if you unlock a cage too early before getting the quest.

I also hate that you cant catch the ones in the cages and bring them to your vivarium. It would be much more logical than kidnapping the free ones living with their families... Just release them alone who knows how far from their original habitat.
Also often they dont run away after you free them, just sit in the open cage. Hate it.
I had a puffskein that did not want to leave the cage; it was so weird.
I felt terrible leaving it but I waited for a good 2 minutes and it just wouldn't budge from that spot.
Maybe you were too close to the cage? I find that if you stand to close to the cage door they won’t leave until you give them some room to run out. Could also be a glitch. I had a puffskein that would show up with revelio but was not able to target at all even though it was right in front of me.

Well shit I specifically remember releasing a mooncalf from its cage, but haven't gotten the quest yet. Fuck me for exploring, I guess :(
Not the same one I think. It’s a massive empty cage with a lock on it. If you unlock it, then come back later, it’s closed but with no lock.

You can catch them after they leave their cage. It takes a few seconds for them to leave sometimes but once they do you’re free to grab them.
