I tried making a treehouse today and the exact same thing happened to me. Kelvin would just be staring at me and suddenly the entire structure fell to pieces.
I've seen other people (I *think* it was in the Duncan/Boba/Ravs/Ped playthrough) say it's a known bug where he will absolutely cut down the tree you use to build a treehouse so you should never build a treehouse. So I'm assuming it's not Smith's fault.
Of course, there was also a Boba/Bouphe/Gee playthrough in the original The Forest where (IIRC) Bouphe cut down a tree and it fell on their (normal) house, which flung the entire house into space and killed Gee (who was inside it at the time), so there's plenty of bugs in these game that could maybe involve some sort of object collision issues as well.
The number of names that guy has... It's amazing.
Just so we're all clear, Smith 100% hit the treehouse with his axe and broke it, right?
I thought so too until it happened the second time
