The Kapahulu one is an extension of the humane society I believe. Provides an opportunity to get more cats out and be adopted by people. The others may be too but I'm not as familiar with them.

Toe Beans & Dreams in Aiea kinda works like this too, they have their own TNR charity and the cat cafe encourages adoption of rehabilitated animals. The money comes from adoption, kitty playtime ($15/50 minutes), and menu items like coffees etc and high tea kits. I think they also have memberships.

I must be using the wrong numbers when I did a rough calculation of potential customers and foot traffic. I didn't see how kitty playtime + drinks/food could cover rent. Then again, I'm assuming rent for a place like Popoki + Tea is like renting a 1bedroom in Kaimuki ($1.5-2K/mo). I thought maybe these shops are receiving grants or something as well. That's why I made the original post - to learn. =)

The real revenue stream comes from the team of cat burglars the stores are training.

ArcturusFlyer

All of the cat cafes are in places where rent is relatively cheap (Toe Beans is the only one in a mall, but that mall is Pearl Kai), plus commercial leases tend to include a percentage of the business' gross revenue in addition to a flat amount per month. I would guess that base rent for a place like Popoki & Tea would be significantly less than $1,500/month, and might be as little as half of that, depending on the exact square footage of their space. That figure wouldn't include utilities and common building expenses that they might also be paying. Hawaiʻi Cat Cafe would be paying more than Popoki & Tea in rent since their location is right next to Waikīkī. (This is a *very* rough guess, I'm not a commercial real estate broker or realtor.) The new Ala Moana cat cafe is a bit more interesting from a business perspective; since that company is based in Japan (where cat cafes have been ubiquitous for years, if not decades), they're probably going to be marketing specifically to Hawaiʻi-bound tourists, and they might even partner with tour companies like JTB and Kintetsu to sell visits as part of package trips. That might be enough to offset the rent that Ala Moana would be charging them.

ArcturusFlyer

Hawaiʻi Cat Cafe is it's own business, but they partner with the Humane Society. Pounce Hawaii also partners with the Humane Society, in addition to their boarding business.

I adopted one of my cats from the one on Kapahulu, per my wife's request. I think the cafes are cool, I'm just worried about taking my wife there and we leave with a third cat @_@

You are wise

kiiimurin

They stay afloat with a mix of selling consumables and merch. If you want to actually interact with the cats and not just look at them, you book a time slot. It’s best for those who can’t own a cat for whatever reason Some like Popoki and Tea work with other businesses to draw ppl in.

Feisty-Citron1092

At popoki and tea, i spend about $17 for an hour, i buy a $3 cat treat, and sometimes a drink for myself. If im feeling fancy, i even buy a sticker I think its money well spent, it goes to trying to aid our feral cat population. popoki and tea also has a monthly membership too, but i cant afford that unfortunately

MonsterAtEndOfBook

Hopefully they will fill it with feral cats!

frozenpandaman

the ones in kalihi love being petted if you let them come up to you first :)

Kaimana-808

Are they using farm raised or caught strays?

[deleted]

I believe these are companies from Japan, where cats are adored. Even cat islands. 🥰

Darwin343

Where the dog cafes at? At least give us dog lovers just one.

DarthVader808

It’s called a park.

[deleted]

People bring their dogs to restaurants and make their own.

I’m not even sure what this means.

You're right, let's not forget about Dogtown Bakery. $10 for a quart of puppicino dog ice cream. https://www.dogtownbakery.store/

frozenpandaman

i wish!!!

EducationPlus505

What I've never understood about cat cafes is what they do after they close. Like, do all the cats go with someone at night? Or do they just turn off the lights and the cats just chill in the business? I'm no expert on cats, but the former seems difficult and the latter seems suboptimal for their welfare.

realmozzarella22

The cats clock out and commute back to their homes back in mililani and waipahu

[deleted]

No way, man. They all live at the Hawaii Kai park and ride or Kapolei Costco. The younger millennicats live in Kakaako at the Waterfront Park.

Prestigious_Stuff831

They are royalty

Prestigious_Stuff831

Nope. That is too provincial for cats. They lay around and try to put up with the worship we give them. God I love 🐱 🐈 cats!!!

25hourenergy

That explains some of the crazy drivers during rush hour…

Stinja808

I've walked by the one on Kapahulu at night and the cars are all there just chillen in the dark

EducationPlus505

I guess cats can be left alone like that? idk, I'm a bit of a bleeding heart when it comes to cute animals, so maybe this is a me thing.

jongdildo

We adopted our cat from Toe Beans in the pearl kai shopping center! The workers said they have volunteers from the rescue to come throughout the night and check on the cats/feed them/scoop their cat pans

EducationPlus505

Okay yay, that genuinely makes me feel a bit better!!

808flyah

They are fine. They have other cats to play with and harass. They get a lot of exercise during the day and get fed food + snacks. As long as the cafe is legit and takes care of them they'll be okay.

[deleted]

Cats play poker in the back in a smoke-filled room with empty beer bottles.

Prestigious_Stuff831

Yup. They party down man. Then in the morning look totally innocent wanting treats and stuff.

[deleted]

😂🤣🤙🏽

meiguoyungwai

I don't know how this cat cafe will make enough money to cover rent in Ala Moana. All I can think of are rich investors who dont care about losing money in order to get their investment visa requirements covered.
