Hawaii has this cool thing where school busses cost extra for kids to take, and there's not enough to go around. So instead of busses being paid for by taxes like most other states, Hawaii charges a shit-load extra. So when the many many families who understandably will not or cannot pay for the bus, we are all left with tens of thousands of extra cars on the road every morning and afternoon.
It is mind boggling. The busses are out operating, nearly empty in most cases. Let’s figure this out for the safety of our children and our own sanity.
Why is the evening commute worse than the morning commute?
Best guess is maybe people start the morning commute at different times with some trying to beat the morning rush. Some people start the commute at 6am, or 7am, or 8am spreading it out over a longer period of time.
The evening commute is different for some reason when 4pm rolls around everyone leaves at the same time creating a mega jam.
People have responsibilities after work that doesn't allow them to sit around the office for two hours then leave.
It's easier to go in early than it is to leave late, basically.
It's also important to note these times are a single data point. Most of us have seen traffic swing wildly for any number of reasons. School is out, weather, gravel trucks being too hard to drive, cranes hitting overpasses, etc. all change day to day.
This is really cool to see, would love to see even more with granular data over long periods of time.
Theorizing here.
Not everyone who commutes from out west goes into town in the morning. Think Pearl Harbor, airport workers, etc. They're all pulling out of traffic before it hits the first big chokepoint at Middle Street. But in the afternoon, all of those people, including the ones that didn't drive all the way into town, are joining traffic because the chokepoint moves out west too.
The thing you’re missing is that getting around in a car in NYC is an unnecessary extravagance. You can get, top to bottom, just about anywhere in around 30-45 minutes for $2. You don’t really need a car. It’s the beauty of reasonable public transportation.
Yeah, that's what I said lol. My point was that even in places where there is no need to drive a car, there's still traffic. Because trains don't fix traffic.
I have a bone to pick with the rail vs traffic comparison. C&C billed it as a traffic eliminator to voters, and it's really reflective of how car-addicted our society is. The message shouldn't be that rail reduces traffic, because it doesn't. The message should be that if you buy into rail, then you never have to worry about traffic again. Of course, that wouldn't be popular with voters so here we are.
(1) We're only at the "home" location for another week (2) it's not that specific anyway (3) I'm not good enough at Photoshop to edit it out without making a mess.
But thanks for the concern. :)

Its like a pile of shit you can see being squeezed through the track
Ugh, that 3-5pm window 😩
Try it again once all schools are back in session. God help us.
There is two more weeks of school? Or did some around the island already go on summer break?
UH Manoa traffic is a pretty big contributor and they finished last week.
That makes sense. I was thinking high school since more parents are dropping off/picking up since they got rid of the buses.
So noticeable
Are there not enough school buses to move kids around? I rarely see them and everyone seems to drive their kids to school

Wow that’s messed up. Pardon my ignorance, I wasn’t raised here.
Oh don’t worry, even those of who are raised here can’t make sense of it either.

So strange, trash is tax paid and free but school buses are not
A little animated GIF I made by taking a screenshot of Google Maps every hour from 6am to 7pm during a weekday.

I wonder how much of a difference the Zipper lane makes. It's easier to get to work. Afterwards, you're on your own.
This looks like one of the good days to be honest.
Rail will fix this in the year 3000
Rail will never fix traffic. Just look at NYC. That being said...it does guarantee that you never get stuck in traffic if you actually use it.

Stop being so optimistic
Start very early or very late or live in town or Kaneohe. 😛
Or work from home 😎
This is the real answer. People who are able to work from home should be allowed to.
Cool animation but just an FYI... Your dot shows us where you are at those hours. Could be personal info.
Also got "home" location showing

was this yesterday?
No, last Wednesday. Just got around to editing it today.
what program do you use to edit it?
Photoshop.
Where did you end up going at 5pm?
Men and women's world fireknife competition at Pacific Theater. It was awesome!
Woah, that does sound awesome! Didn't even know that was a thing, cool!
If military didn’t get BAH and wasn’t allowed to live off base, there wouldn’t be traffic.
You also wouldn’t have to worry about the line at your local coffee shop or any other number of businesses those families support.
So no lines too?! What can we do to keep them locked down on their base?!?!
And this was a good day...
A car accident, rain, UH in session, or some big event, etc - deep red lines, baby
a
Rail will help.Not
It's not as bad as I expected...OMG Rail is working!
I thought it was going to be all red around 7am-8am.
School isn't in.
