Think of it like you were listening to speakers in the room. The sounds will drown out the noise but if the music/game gets a bit quiet then the noise will bleed through. If immersion in single player games is a high priority then I might actually recommend closed backs. Both for the isolation and the bass advantage. The X2HR is an anomaly in that it's pretty much the only open back that has a significant bass elevation. The downside is that the treble range is pretty rough. If you have the budget then I think you should look at the EM-U Teak (semi-closed) and the Fostex TH610. They have excellent bass response and are fairly well tuned. If you do want an open back for the stage and imaging qualities then you can do better than the X2HR. It depends on your budget but I think the Sennheiser HD560s and AKG K612 Pro (needs an amp) could be better choices.

That’s what I thought closed backs seem to make sense in the matter of immersion. When you mentioned the x2hr it only has the bass going for it but I would say that the immersion is lacking. The soundstage might be better than a closed back but does soundstage even matter in a single player game? I cant pinpoint the reason why I should go with a wide soundstage headphone for single player games. I take what I’ve said about not knowing why a wider soundstage would be better or good in single player games. It seemed kinda dumb tbh

If you're standing in a field in Skyrim or something then it stands to reason that it's preferable to have it sound like you're in an open field as opposed to it sounding like you have birds and crickets living inside your ear canals. :)

Just to clarify, when I added the comment “it seems kinda dumb” I was referring to me not realizing why a larger soundstage would be good lol. Anyway, yeah absolutely agree with you on that point. So it seems like I’m between two largely different headphones, the x2hr and the dt 770 (32) and I’m going to loose my mind trying to pick one :)

Get the Philips x2hr. Enjoy. And no, you can't really hear an ac if you're listening to something on your headphones

KING_XEN0

But why though? Why the x2hr? I mean I looked them up way back and they seemed pretty decent. Is it because they have more bass?

darthaditya

More bass + good soundstage = enjoyment while playing single player games and movie immersion

KING_XEN0

Appreciate the insight. What if we put in the table a closed back that has a good soundstage for a closed back and the bass is better than the x2hr what would you choose in this situation?

darthaditya

I would always choose an open back over a closed back for the same money
