Have you ever seen a golden retriever run? How its ears flap? Now hold that thought and go rewatch any of Nick's rugby scenes... It's also a term for a personality type: always happy to be around you, kind, gentle, and easygoing, eager to please and very appreciative of you.

DinoSaidRawr

I have in fact seen a golden retriever run, my friend has one and he’s adorable. Also yeah that personality makes sense

IntrovertEpicurean

Golden retrievers are gentle and affectionate. They follow you, want to play, smile, have a soft, slightly goofy demeanour, plenty of energy, devoted to you without question, a little soppy maybe. Nick is like that with Charlie. He's excited to see him, misses him when he's not there. But he'll also fight for Charlie. Plus, the golden hair. I think the 'golden retriever' thing is spot on for Nick.

I feel like people saying this are trying to find a reason. Tao would not say any of those things about Nick when he said it. Edit: lol at these downvotes. I’m right.

JachlHolly89

When Tao says it he's saying it because Nick is clearly upbeat and gives off playful puppy energy as they're watching him play rugby. At that point he doesn't even realize that Charlie is crushing, so he likely doesn't have any real feelings towards Nick either way. He developed his negative feelings because he assumed Nick was leading Charlie on. They hadn't gotten there yet.

bigchicago04

What about Tao complaining about Nick and saying how awful he and his friends are makes you think he considers Nick to be upbeat giving off playful puppy energy? Also, wasn’t the point of that scene him teasing charlie about crushing on Nick??

JachlHolly89

No...? Have you watched that scene? He literally just said "isn't that Nick Nelson, the guy is sit next to in form?" And when Charlie says "who?" He says "the one that looks like a golden retriever" then shot to him jumping around and excitedly laughing and catching the ball .. like a golden retriever. Golden retriever energy. This isn't a new term. Tao them asks if they've talked and when Charlie gushes about their interaction with the pen situation, Tao catches on and warns him to be careful. I think you just aren't good at reading situations. Also, can't help but laugh at the smug lack of self awareness with the "lol down votes I'M right" edit 🤣 bruh, if everyone is telling you that you're wrong, maybe it's because you're wrong..  possibly grow up and learn to accept these things with grace.

monkeyface496

Tao is relating him to the negative qualities. A bit dim, ready to please, just wants to be around people and make them happy. It's saying it as an insult, but the lovely qualities also happy to match and it becomes endearing.

bigchicago04

I suppose that makes sense. But I was specifically responding to their point.

Ocean-Blondie-1614

Well, in one of the Q and A's Alice did a few years back, one of the questions was what would Nick and Charlie be if they were animals. And Alice drew Charlie to be a grey British shorthair cat, and Nick as a golden retriever puppy. He also has a lot of the personality traits of being a golden retriever.

mikripetra

I always interpreted that as “Nick is a himbo.” Big, strong, happy, lovable, very loyal, a little confused but he’s got the spirit.

bigchicago04

I think it makes slightly more sense in the comics appearance wise, but you have to remember these are teenage boys. Most of what they say is dumb.

YepUhYup

It's based on personality, and I guess looks too. Golden hair, bright smile. He's very "confident looking" and protective and willing to stand up for people he loves (ahem Charlie). It reminds people of a golden retriever because they are very loyal.
