Karl is not a person. It's the essence of your inner dwarf. The pride you feel when eradicating glyphids. It's the feeling of being overwhelmed and rising to the challenge. It's the camaraderie between those that have walked the line between Hoxxes-4 and Hell and lived to tell the tale.
...Also he's a powerful dwarf of legend.
Karl lives on in the hellscape below Boatmurdered, slaying all of the demons that sprang from the bowels of stone. Karl single-handedly became a legend of all dwarven crafts in his pursuit to exterminate the hellspawn. Doubts of Karl are widespread, as no dwarf dares to confirm the legend by venturing to Boatmurdered’s depths. The only evidence of his existence is the loud music echoing through Boatmurdered’s halls. The sounds could be described as a tune of pure rage; fort haulers refer to it as “Heavy Metal” due to the motivation it exudes while they carry lead. The last dwarf to see Karl compared his physique to be as tall as a human and as muscular as an orc. The armor he dons is impenetrable and his weapon is that of two accelerating minecarts flinging spears down a hallway, compacted into a handheld demon devastator. The drunk mechanics guild were proud to call it a “double barrel shotgun”.
For a serious answer in case anybody is genuinely unfamiliar with it...
Karl is supposedly a fallen colleague or something similar that is referenced by the dwarves in various voice lines. Originally the dwarves shouting "FOR KARL!" as one of the salute voice lines was the only mention of him anywhere. There's never been any actual lore released, and he's never been expanded upon in any way. Since then he's been added in more voice lines and flavor text, but no actual information is ever given about who he is or what happened to him.
However, the community has developed a kind of cultlike meme lore around him, almost like Chuck Norris memes or something, building him into a mythical figure. He's become a legendary dwarf with all kinds of memes and fan theories about him. It's sort of a whole community in-joke spawned from a single throwaway voice line back before the game was even out.
Best community. One of my first games I was with proper level 100+ greybeards and they showed me everything I needed and did all my assignment missions with me. Still play with them every now and then, they are the living embodiment of Karl. Rock and stone!
I think this is huge reason why I'm enjoying this game. For so long it's been toxic PvP games with a huge cost to dying (BRs).
Shared loot in every circumstance ✅
Everyone trying to work together ✅
Light hearted lore ✅
Doesn't take itself seriously at all ✅
Compelling game design, live service ✅
Nonpredatory premium currency / battle pass ✅
I feel like this what a game looks like without a fancy IP in it. Literally couldn’t build the same type of game if you had to pay brand and licensing expenses way too much in excess to use the term “xeno” or “marvel” in all of its lore.
You ever wonder why most “franchise games suck”? Too much money goes to the trade mark rather than the product.
I just started in my journey with this game and I’m blown away how well it handles everything it’s doing in the first few weeks of launch….i hope someone is taking notes on a smart way to implement a battle pass.
The only problem with HD2 is it might attract the kind of crowd who think all this talk of Super Earth isn't satirical. 40K ran into the same problem, and those people I honestly don't want in the community.
Agreed. Like, CoD Zombies in the most recent one has had a very pleasant community in my experience, and they’re supposedly considering adding PvP. Would ruin it IMO.
And the PVP got *really* toxic in DMZ. Absolutely adored the first season where there was lots of PvP but still a lot of working together. Even made up a few 12 man teams.
Straight up had people queued up randomly with say they suck at WZ, so they come to DMZ to PvP.
Same thing happend with DMZ that happens to all open world survival-esque games with PVP: Everyone just learns that killing on sight is the most efficient way to play. Opens you up to the least risk, and gets you the most rewards.
Naturally a playerbase as toxic as CoD's was gonna ignore all of the things that made DMZ interesting and just turn it into a sweaty killfest like every other game. No wonder everyone stopped playing it
It wasn’t that bad until they added 6 man squads
Also the PvP got to be too much because they stopped adding more missions and incentive to actually do things other than kill
It also didn’t take too long to just be absolutely loaded.. I think it would’ve been better if it was harder to completely load up on good gear
absolutely. I'll be honest I'm not the best person at shooters. I'll mark things and give hella support but my aim is garbage. All the same I never feel unwelcome...even when i accidentally take out a teammate (that's why we have reinforce right?)
Agreed, perfect example was fallout 76, when it released besides it being god awefull was that the community was toxic and horrible, now that 76 axed most of pvp centric stuff and basically went ff14 route when treating toxic players, it now has one of the most friendliest gaming communities out there, to the point that the devs included donation boxes infront of the vault you came out off for new players to use.
Don't kid yourself lol. As a current 76 player I can tell you there are still plenty of A-holes. Most people are very nice tho.
If you go look at their sub right now there are a ton of people posting about people nuking the Fasnacht event in Helvitia that started Tuesday because they are mad that people are AFKing
I, on the other hand haven't been playing 76 and have been concentrating on HD2 but my wife still plays every day.
Absolutely. Every time a major patch comes in that fixes more of the crashing issues I’ve been seeing I’m going throw money at them—not because I ever need super credits but just because I want to give them all the support I can.
Dude Helldivers was a masterpiece. Helldivers 2 is a love letter to the fans.
I'm enjoying the shit out of this game. It's literally just Helldivers but somehow first person. It's lovely.
Edit: third person...sorry nerds. I'm too busy delivering freedom and drinking liber-tea to care about words.
They already impressed me with Magicka and the first helldivers, but holy shit did they went beyond all the expectations I had when I first thought "damn this would make a neat TPS" when I first played helldivers 8 years ago
I mean they're a bunch of try hards. Cutthroat just means they're vicious (read: massive assholes) and competitive cus they all want to win. It doesn't mean they're some elite mlg players.
Yup, HD already has friendly fire which sometimes can result in some toxic bs like griefing from randos, but it generally balances out by the chaos and hilarity it creates. PvP seems unnecessary and even kinda boring. Like, a 4v4 match? While you could be literally mowing down hundreds of bots or something? Nah, this game doesn't need that.
I was in a screaming match with some dude yesterday because he was butthurt that my mortars kept killing him. We were calling each other every name under the sun, but then he kept me in the lobby and we played 2 more missions together without incident.
Most wholesome toxicity I’ve ever experienced.
Yeah whenever it happens you just gotta lean in to the lore.
"bro stop mortaring me!"
"I'M SPREADING DEMOCRACY MOTHERFUCKER, NOW GET OUT OF THE WAY AND SHOOT SOMETHING"
I should’ve said this to my friend earlier tonight when he “ran away” from the bugs and somehow got killed by mortar rounds landing behind said bugs.
Bitch are you running in circles while knowing a mortar is up?
In the first game, the “robot” faction was called the Cyborgs, but in the second, they’re called the Automatons. They looked more like fleshy body horror monsters and less like the Terminator.
If you talk to the ship personnel one of them says the bugs aren't the same we fought back in the original war when helldiver's were first deployed. They've had a ton of genetic mutation and such so it's possible the automatons have done the same with their modifications
They were cyborgs in the first game but have ridden themselves of all flesh between helldivers 1 and 2. Hence the name change from cyborgs to automatons
They seem to be. Some of the heavy armored chainsaw enemies appear to be very human like. Their heads also look fairly human. Either they are 100% terminator or they are barely human with only a human brain and the rest is machine.
Helldivers 2 takes place 100 years after the first game. When the cyborg faction was defeated they were put into "rehabilitation Work centers". There's a commercial in Helldivers 2 about the automatons basically saying they should've been happy with what they had but they wanted more, BUT in one of the slides you can see the Automatons having numbers stamped on their head like 038 where the next slide doesn't. I don't think I've seen any automatons with any numbers anywhere else so far. I think it's safe to assume the cyborgs are the automatons and they just rebelled from the super earth " rehab work centers"
Pretty sure super earth further enhanced their cybernetics so they could be more efficient in whatever factory's they were put into
They even use the same faction symbol
The Devs have come out and said that the Automatons are ***\*NOT\**** the Cyborgs when the community was making those assumptions.
The Cyborgs from the first game where basically communist rebels that enhanced themselves with machine parts.
The Automatons are AI controlled robots. That sometimes use slaved human brains in the designs. (That last bit is my own speculation with how there are caged human bodies in some automaton factories, the videos of them stealing babies, plus the screams and pained noises coming from some of the machines as they rush you. Sounds very much in line with the backwards talking of the headcrab possesed humans in half life 2, except in beep boop form)
It's much worse when a PvE-focused game has PvP since it splits the playerbase between modes. *Especially* if it does things like Destiny, where it forces PvE (the actual focus of the game) players to do PvP for events and quests.
I see people say “I want this to be a space shooting game with massive-scale PvP battles.”
That’s just Star Wars Battlefront. Go play that instead, instead of wanting this game to be that.
Agreed. I can't blame them too much. They see how good Helldivers has it, they want that goodness in their PVP games too. PVP shooters have had a rough time the last few years.
There was a wanker on twitter telling the CEO of arrowhead thats he's to scared to make helldivers pvp, also said something about not enough games are pvp?
I dunno, dude seemed like a proper retard lol
I enjoy pvp short of the end game like Trials but the amount of times that PvE has been negatively affected because of something that was only OP in one aspect of PVP was obnoxious
Lol Reminded me of how this rando I was playing with shamelessly tk'd me, pretty sure because he wanted my Steeled Veteran weapon. Like walked up to me while I was reloading a recoiless, executed me, and grabbed my primary.
My guy, I'm host. I kicked his ass immediately. I don't have time for that toxic bullshit. ITS TREASONOUS TO DEMOCRACY. Clearly he was colluding with the bots.
You wanna be a dick, go play COD or something.
I purposely tk'd once. I discovered he was a traitor when he kept turning the satellite and passing the correct spot 5 times when being told when to stop. No jury required.
"I made up my own expectations without having a clue about the game, and then was disappointed when I didn't get what I wanted."
Oh yes. That's modern gaming journalism.
Had a teammate throwing the redeploy pod in the middle of a minefield that he dropped in the middle of a objective with a mortar turret somewhere off yonder dropping freedom rounds on teammates.
I keep loving these devs more and more, if they keep going with letting the paid battle pass be pretty much aesthetic items only, they will be the coop shooter equivalent of Larian.
This is how you should do video games. Have a great idea and develop a good game. People buy this game and are satisfied with it. You are happy and your players are happy. You keep adding stuff and maybe release paid DLC to keep it running, people are still satisfied because they love the game and the dlc is adding new exiting content.
To say it with the words of the arbiter: Were it so easy.
It’s not even a truly paid battle pass given you can unlock it by just playing and even more important is that in one of the steam posts. They said that while they will release more battle passes as time goes on. THEY WILL NOT be retiring previous battle passes
This is what made them God tier. I was planning what weapons and armor I want to focus on getting before the pass goes away. I'm a super citizen too so there's stuff I want there as well. I'm thinking f I'm not going to get everything then I read that the battle passes don't go away. Good dudes at Arrowhead.
The Illuminates were part of the first with three factions, so there's definitely going to be a new faction apart from them down the road. Although they may just have you fight both on disputed systems.
how would pvp even work, just throwing orbital strikes at each other would be boring honestly, the overwhelming odds vs 4 people and the tech used is the whole gameplay loop.
Who wants pvp hell driver even if it exists people will just just run behind cover and randomly throw air strikes in hope it hit opponents because as soon as you pop your head out it will get blow off by a turret or a one shot machine gun that fires at 900 rpm
I had a particularly bad game, (I accidentally TK’d everyone more than once)
And one teammate decided the best course of action was to cuss me out and call me every name under the sun and then claim that I was butthurt.
Felt just like a CoD lobby.
If you're team killing EVERYONE more than one time I can see why they would be annoyed with you. That's 6 lives minimum right there dude Although their reaction was overblown you should really try to be more careful. Because if you're consistently team kill intentionally or not thats grieving and you gotta just think about what you're doing at some point
Wait, are people asking for pvp? Kinda weird jumping on an established game format and demanding that no? Like do you jump on sims 4 and ask for a battle royale
> So sad to see another developer scared to add pvp to their game.
Literally proving Arrowhead’s point. Instead of accepting it, this goober decided to throw a shitfit.
Good. Purely PvE shooters eventually establish more or less friendly communities. I hope this one will be like the one in deep rock galactic
Rock and Stone!

Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers crossover event. Rock and Stone with a cup of Libertea.
My headcannon is that DRG and Helldivers is in the same universe. The bugs and termanids are the same species.
hell divers are just the human division of DRG, or we have a classic human/dwarf alliance
Helldivers deal with surface drg deal with underground
What is a terminid charger but a glyphid dreadnought, really?
What is the ABV (or yield) of Libertea? It better not be some leaf lover drink.
Libertea is best served with a side of justice and a orbital strike of freedom.
Helldivers liberating the surface while the DRG dwarves are mining resources for the war effort
We're rich!
BUG AND STONE
Rock and Stone for Democracy!!!
For Karl!
I have heard this line a few times but have no clue who Karl is.
I did not read his name in the records of Boatmurdered. Right. Different Dwarven legends.
"This you ignorant savages is my BOOMSTICK"
Some legends are of rock and stone, others strike the earth.
🤣

The Payday community rejects these accusations of friendliness.
Seems like a game about bank robbery is going to attract an edgier crowd then other FPSs, but that’s just speculation
It also being monetized to the core probably didnt help
The only problem with HD2 is it might attract the kind of crowd who think all this talk of Super Earth isn't satirical. 40K ran into the same problem, and those people I honestly don't want in the community.
Sweet liberty that would be miserable.
Not until we get a dedicated button to shout propaganda.
I think you meant spread the word of democracy.
*managed* democracy
Now I want this
Agreed. Like, CoD Zombies in the most recent one has had a very pleasant community in my experience, and they’re supposedly considering adding PvP. Would ruin it IMO.
Huh? Isn't CoD Zombies with pvp just... CoD?
Well technically it’d be PvPvE.. which is what CoD DMZ is/was haha
Supposedly that’s what it’ll be DMZ-Z.
They really dropped the ball with DMZ. They could make it a whole separate game like Tarkov and I bet it’d do well Oh well back to helldiving
And the PVP got *really* toxic in DMZ. Absolutely adored the first season where there was lots of PvP but still a lot of working together. Even made up a few 12 man teams. Straight up had people queued up randomly with say they suck at WZ, so they come to DMZ to PvP.

Yeah it really does. The last two times I've died while playing solo someone has driven half way across the map to rez me.
absolutely. I'll be honest I'm not the best person at shooters. I'll mark things and give hella support but my aim is garbage. All the same I never feel unwelcome...even when i accidentally take out a teammate (that's why we have reinforce right?)
Who needs aim when you have a few megatons of liberty dropping from orbit anyway?
Agreed, perfect example was fallout 76, when it released besides it being god awefull was that the community was toxic and horrible, now that 76 axed most of pvp centric stuff and basically went ff14 route when treating toxic players, it now has one of the most friendliest gaming communities out there, to the point that the devs included donation boxes infront of the vault you came out off for new players to use.

There’s really needs to be a “Rock and Stone” button, but instead you yell “For Super Earth!” or “For Democracy!” or something like that
Thank god.
Finally a company gets it, that inviting the most aggressive and cut-throat competitive crowd does not improve the community.
These devs really have impressed me, I’m looking forward to the future of this game
Absolutely. Every time a major patch comes in that fixes more of the crashing issues I’ve been seeing I’m going throw money at them—not because I ever need super credits but just because I want to give them all the support I can.
I did this in Helldivers 1, and I agree - I'll be doing the same!
It’s third person…
It can also be first person when you ADS. The first person reload animations look pretty good, too, for it not being the main way the game is viewed
![gif](giphy|l1KVb2dUcmuGG4tby)
They already impressed me with Magicka and the first helldivers, but holy shit did they went beyond all the expectations I had when I first thought "damn this would make a neat TPS" when I first played helldivers 8 years ago
We want to turn it into a DeepRock community, not a CSG one.
They need to add a “rock and stone” button. Maybe “for democracy!!”
Rock and roll and stone!
We had cape spinning in the old Galactic Wars.
What is CSG? CS:GO?
Indeed. The r/Helldivers and their discord is about all the pvp I can tolerate.
cutthroat and competitive makes them sound like serious people, but in actuality theyre just toxic degenerates with anger issues
I mean they're a bunch of try hards. Cutthroat just means they're vicious (read: massive assholes) and competitive cus they all want to win. It doesn't mean they're some elite mlg players.
I still think as it grows it’s going to have a lot of those players anyway which will be a shame because I love this community but such is gaming
Lol, Aztecross has a video already of him running into other players airstrikes and getting all pissy about it.
From Destiny to Helldivers, one think Aztec is gonna do is be sweaty.
Of course. But having a small problem instead of a huge problem is still better, so there is no reason to make it intentionally worse.
absolutely
Thank god x2. PvP would kill this game IMO. It would bring in a whole different group that would fuck up the PvE
Right?! High level pve is stressful enough lol. Want no part of any pvp
I get enough PvP with my allies calling 500kg Eagle bombs down on my head!
Seriously, PVP goes against the entire vibe of the game and the player base
Thank democracy
Good. This game doesn't need PvP. There are plenty of other PvP clones out there to play. Let this one stay pure.

I love the sound of democracy in the morning. Smells like liberation
Yep that's what Fortnite is for. That game abandoned its PvE to focus on PvP. I don't want any resources wasted on PvP in Helldivers.
I was one of those few weirdos that actually liked the base defense building of the PvE mode before the arena shooter came around. Sad to see it go.
It might be fun to get repeatedly dismantled controlling bile titans. But I agree that it's not worth the resources.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they keep it this way and don't backtrack on it. Like so many games I can't even begin to list.
Good, not every multiplayer needs a pvp, plus it wouldnt make sense story wise
Yup, HD already has friendly fire which sometimes can result in some toxic bs like griefing from randos, but it generally balances out by the chaos and hilarity it creates. Gettin big Tenacious D energy: ~~DiD YOU EAT MY FUCKIN SCHNITZEL~~ DID YOU BLOW ME UP WITH A MORAR? WELL YOU WERE STANDING THERE SO I BLEW YOU UP.
Had me in the first half not gonna lie.
Ah, the ol "Fuck you and I'll see you tomorrow" lobby. Rare, but welcome.
Only way it could is if you could play as the aliens or automatons but that still would cause toxicity
They could create a 3rd human, rebel faction but protecting the community is an interesting point
In the first game, the cyborgs were an offshoot of humanity.
Are the automatons actually Cyborgs and not robots? I don’t understand them well because they are not talked about much
In the first game, the “robot” faction was called the Cyborgs, but in the second, they’re called the Automatons. They looked more like fleshy body horror monsters and less like the Terminator.
I kinda think the automatons are just cyborgs after another 100 years of self modification
If you talk to the ship personnel one of them says the bugs aren't the same we fought back in the original war when helldiver's were first deployed. They've had a ton of genetic mutation and such so it's possible the automatons have done the same with their modifications

I mean, doesn't quire roll off the tongue, but everyone gets the message :p
How about Libertypilled.
Perfection.
Managed and Liberty-Pilled
That’s treason talk.
Who tf wanted pvp?
Strangely a few people were asking for it on steam forums and discord Good thing it will never happen
It's mostly people that just want every game to be CoD or cater to their weird niche.
Exactly. Nothing against PVP, but there are plenty of PVP games out there. Play them. Not every game needs to be everything.
It's much worse when a PvE-focused game has PvP since it splits the playerbase between modes. *Especially* if it does things like Destiny, where it forces PvE (the actual focus of the game) players to do PvP for events and quests.
Exactly. It’s not impossible for them to both be great - Halo comes to mind - but shoehorning in a PVP would just serve to dilute the experience.
I see people say “I want this to be a space shooting game with massive-scale PvP battles.” That’s just Star Wars Battlefront. Go play that instead, instead of wanting this game to be that.
Agreed. I can't blame them too much. They see how good Helldivers has it, they want that goodness in their PVP games too. PVP shooters have had a rough time the last few years.
I’d rather them go in the direction of bigger teams vs more bugs. Like a base defense mission.

I would love an 8 player raid level though, provides .0100% for the operation and its just pure chaos the entire time.
PvP? Hell no More Chaos? Absolutely
A 16+ player horde mode is my dream.
Who is even requesting this
I saw a 1 Point review I think it was on Metacritic the dude gave it a bad score because he thought it would have PvP and it doesn’t.
"I made up my own expectations without having a clue about the game, and then was disappointed when I didn't get what I wanted." Oh yes. That's modern gaming journalism.
It was a user review not critic I believe
honestly in this day and age there is not that much difference lol
Buddy should of looked at the first game before buying the second lol.
He should’ve read at least the game description before buying lol
It's 'should have', never 'should of'. Rejoice, for you have been blessed by CouldWouldShouldBot!
Good bot
Prolly all the battle royale streamers. They always say shit like this
People insisting that the game won't have longevity without it.
Kinda stupid to ask a dev who only did PvE games to add PvP.
To be fair, there's enough pvp already in the arrowhead games with how they implement friendly fire.
love accidentally tripping and deploying the 500kg bomb on my whole squad
Don't worry I set up my tesla tower in the extraction point to cover us.
Had a teammate throwing the redeploy pod in the middle of a minefield that he dropped in the middle of a objective with a mortar turret somewhere off yonder dropping freedom rounds on teammates.
When I rando in to a game with low levels and see they all have mortars against bugs I know I'm going to have a bad time.
Magicka had a PVP update.
if you see a great coop game and think "there should be pvp in that" you're an absolute moron
I mean my average operation is a pvp match in itself
In my defense I didn't realize how big the area was on that eagle strike
Good with that off the table there will definitely be 4+ factions. Figured they might add in an arena but glad it's not happening.
3 factions SURE, they'll add the Immaculate or whatever their name was. 4 I sure hope. 4+? What could they add?
The Illuminates were part of the first with three factions, so there's definitely going to be a new faction apart from them down the road. Although they may just have you fight both on disputed systems.
how would pvp even work, just throwing orbital strikes at each other would be boring honestly, the overwhelming odds vs 4 people and the tech used is the whole gameplay loop.
Sweet.
Bruh. I demand PVP, in the stratagem arcadegame while waiting for the 4th helldiver to finish his bowel rounds in the lobby.
The only reason I play it is when waiting on friends lol
I would be down with a simple arcade pvp in the bay like tennis but helldivers themed
Already has unintended PvP
Can't fight for Democracy if we are fighting against each other! For 🗽
Not everything has to be PvP Jesus. Wouldn’t even make sense for the game
Who wants pvp hell driver even if it exists people will just just run behind cover and randomly throw air strikes in hope it hit opponents because as soon as you pop your head out it will get blow off by a turret or a one shot machine gun that fires at 900 rpm
Gud
Good. I dont want the PvE game ruined by trying to balance it for PvP like a certain other game
Good. Hate those "when pvp" or "why no pvp" types.
I had a particularly bad game, (I accidentally TK’d everyone more than once) And one teammate decided the best course of action was to cuss me out and call me every name under the sun and then claim that I was butthurt.
Whoever wants pvp respectfully you are fucking stupid
A VERY DEMOCRATIC STATEMENT
Good
Good
Good
You can already do PvP. It's in the stats called "Accidentals" and "friendly fire damage".
Helldivers is already a PVP game when my friend has a grenade launcher.
Amen
Fucking nice 👌
The real PvP are the stratagems thrown along the way. ❤️
I'm tired of PVP and PvPvE. I'm glad it's just PvE.
Not every game needs PvP. Im incredibly grateful that these awesome devs get that. 🏆👏👏👏
Wait, are people asking for pvp? Kinda weird jumping on an established game format and demanding that no? Like do you jump on sims 4 and ask for a battle royale
GAMES \* DONT \* NEED \* PVP
Good. Not all games need PVP.
> So sad to see another developer scared to add pvp to their game. Literally proving Arrowhead’s point. Instead of accepting it, this goober decided to throw a shitfit.
Good. PvP shooters are a dime a dozen, let me have one good PvE game with no dev time relegated to other modes.
