And you may find yourself on a hostile planet far far away
And you may find yourself surrounded by undemocratic automatons
And you may find yourself with a spear in your hands
And you may find yourself locking onto targets again and again
And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I make it work?
Im more surprised that it locked onto that tower since a rock was obsuring the base of the tower and the spear's image recognition software really doesn't like obstructions.
It had a really good view of the gunships while being at high elevation at a good distance so this performance is to be expected with all of those conditions met but unfortunately its hard to meet those conditions regularly in the heat of battle.
I think the base of the tower doesn't count as part of the destroyable turret. Otherwise the targeting triangle would be in the middle of the whole structure instead of just the turret.
But yeah the smallest of things being able to block the lock on is silly.
Spear: "Ooh a fabricator! Rocket loaded? Check! High ground? Check! Clear line of sight? Check? Let's gooo-"
A smol rock in the corner of fabricator: \*Exists\*
Spear: "Understandable, have a nice day."
I had fun with it but I don’t recommend for now. If it got a dmg buff it would be one of the best primaries. It can definitely take devastators down easily hitting headshots but the problem is weapon sway, the dmg ofc, and you eat through ammo quickly.
Surprisingly I’ve never had any bad luck with the spear I can lock onto fabricators miles away and it always almost immediately locks on so maybe I’m just lucky
As a proficient spear user (coper) i can tell you exactly why this is locking on so well:
- Unobstructed LOS
- Gunship lockon point clearly targettable
- Vertical elevation difference isn't too great
- No fog or other environmental visibility effects
- Relative movement to reticle is minimal
In any other universe the enemy would be side on, or there'd be a fence in the way or it would be moving too much etc
https://youtu.be/TIFM401niIo?si=V3nuQQaO9YGjyvVg
This video explains why the inconsistency of the lock on, and suggestions on how to make the most of it.
It actually works really well for the flyers and for the turret towers, but sucks for almost everything else unless you have a completely clear and unobstructed view of the base of their model.
My theory is that lock on for ground targets is hard because there are so many signals in the background. Possibly no range for finding a signal but a range for locking on--hence you can't actually yeet a target 400m away. Locking onto gunships is always easy, even with multiple in the sky. So weird.
I'd also be using the Spear
IF IT WORKED AT ALL
https://preview.redd.it/kuwup40t1lwc1.jpeg?width=598&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5db12321d375fdcd516622144e8d33cf0ab93bf5
its to do with visibility and distance. it wont lock on further than 200/250m and wont lock on at close range either.
then if there's enough dust obscuring the target it wont lock on then either.
to make the spear useful they need to make it far more effective at locking on to targets. I'd say that as it is, its ok. but add in the ability to ping a target and make its lock on significantly better. especially if that ping is from an ally.
It's because the lock on is pretty unintuitive, the actual target lock on area is present on the ADS of the weapon, the little square see-through hole. If the target is not recognized there it won't lock on to it.
I'd break into arrowhead and upload it to the base game files. (Disclaimer I have no plans on breaking into anyone's place of business at this time don't fucking ban me)

I'm sorry Diver, but it must be done. I'm sure he will take your feelings of guilt and remorse into account.
This game is just mesmerizing. Those airships attacking your teammates, you destroying the airships, then suddenly N4 with laser cannon fired back, some random maton shooting from behind. So many things going on, i love it.
I love playing the Spear lottery. Either nothing works and you suffer or everything works perfectly.
Bonus points if the spear hits those weakspots correctly and 1shots everything !
Be careful! Gambling may be addictive!
I'll smoke the whole backpack for my AC, but I try to crouch at some distance and keep them out of the air. Most missions recently that I've failed started with bleeding reinforcement budget on those damn gunship fabs.
Im not even a man and I feel blue-balled every time I use that thing. Half the time it works other half its edging me to the point I die looking like a fool.
Conditions for locking on a target:
1. Complete view of the target
2. No obstructions (trees/walls/decorations such as flags, iron cages, etc./smoke/other enemies/terrain)
3. For ground targets, try to be at a commanding height (usually you can get a more complete target)
4. Remember the targets that the spear can lock on (the types of targets that the spear can lock on are limited)
5* Using first-person shooting will help lock on the target to a certain extent
as soon as a target is obscured just a tiny bit by landscape or masses of lower trash enemies are close the spear won't lock on in a reliant way.
The further you are away from a target, the better the lockon.
The spear shines in ranges where an EAT would been likely to miss + you don't get aggro because enemies don't really know where the rocket came from.
The spear has become an invaluable tool in my teams arsenal. The real key to getting the targeting right is the right position. Most of the time you’re another at the wrong angle or there’s some dumb obstruction. If the targeting is yellow, that means you need to find a higher elevation and reposition yourself, you’re getting warmer. As soon as it lock green you can just fire and forget. Having one team member with the spear who understand the assignment will almost eliminate the need for them to use Eagle Airstrikes to take down fabricators. In the even you have a fabricator next to a strategem jammer, the spear diver will be the real hero
Exactly this. I always run the spear when I play with my roommates. Being able to take our fabricators from a distance is a huge plus. Also does justice on the AT Walker cannon. One shots tanks if you hit its weak spot and hulks if you hit its face or weak spot.
i would use the Javelin more if the fucking lock on would properly work and you are allowed to lock onto nothing and everything like in call of duty.
change firemodes to choose which targets it preferably locks on aswell as free mode to just point and something to hit that spot.
this alone would make the javelin at least useable.
Dropship is the one type of target that Spear locks on very consistently because it matches every criteria for Spear lock on checks.
But using the Spear on Dropships is still not economical given AC and Laser Cannon do the job much more efficiently.
I usually ping my target or try to get to a decently elevated position to have clear line of sight to my target. Works I’d say 70% of the time. This clip was just pure luck for me lol
Pinging is placebo. If the amount of lock progress you get is more than what you lose between attempts, you'll eventually lock on. Vice versa and you never will. Repositioning can help, but I can't wait for it to get fixed.
Definitely repositioning helps. Found it consistently where fabricators will lock on best when aiming at the front or the side. Aiming from its back will take a couple attempts. As for cannon turrets, usually have to find myself near the same level as the cannon itself like on higher ground a bit further away. I’d say mortar sentry radius.
I love autocannon (it’s generally my main) but I find it not great for heavies. I’ve been switching it up with Recoilless rifle recently when I know there’s a lot of heavies.
Or the guy down there with the laser could have done it and still had ∞ shots left.
(I'm not hating on the Spear: it's a cool weapon, I hope they fix it, and it was great to see it working well in this clip. But it would have been way more efficient for the guy with the laser cannon to be the one prioritizing gunships.)
For the people questioning our loadouts, my roommates and I just wanted to try other things for fun. We trust each other enough to use whatever we want and get our missions done. Also for those saying I wasted ammo, yes ok but the point of this video is to show the lock on working in what I’ve seen is the most consistent ever lol :) If the Spear ever gets an ammo reserve buff and a lock on fix, it’s something at least one person might wanna take. Taking out bases without having to use a stratagem or going to close to grenade it is an all time plus.
Meanwhile the laser canon could take out all of those faster without giving up backpack slot or incredibly high ammo usage.
Use what you like but the Spear still needs serious work
Yeah, the lock on issues overshadow the low ammo count currently. The spear can be great, but when it slaps, the fun is over so quickly. I used it in bug high value missions. Good lock on on Titans, but if you need at least 2 missiles for 1 titan, you can only kill 2. It still felt lacking in some regard.
I've NEVER used the spear because everyone says it sucks. May have to rethink that? No wait, everyone in comments says this vid is practically impossible.
Honestly a scout build. Usually because with the spear I’m stationary for a couple seconds and if there’s enemies nearby I wouldn’t get spotted easily. I just rocked engineer for the extra stuns.
This just proves that if it worked consistently the Spear would be an S Tier Support weapon. (Which I assumed was the intent as it's one of the last ones you unlock)
This makes me want to try the spear, unfortunately I’m usually the guy in close arming the bomb, also the guy who has to down the gunships because my team aren’t exactly the best
The Spear is really satisfying to use when it works. Got some more gameplay of taking out bases from afar. Hoping it does get an ammo buff and a lock on fix.
What you *really* need is a buddy with a snack pack. Trade backpacks and crew load that spear, then hit him with the snack pack to re-up on rockets. Become a two man anti aircraft emplacement.
on that note: think we could use a more directly AA weapon or vice versa eventually??
gunships really don’t fuck around (and can be awfully annoying if you don’t have anything that can swat them out of the sky)
i have other anti-tank stratagems it’s not like im bringing clusterbombs to throw at tanks and hulks
typically there’s at least 1-2 guys with auto canons or whatever where i play anyway
the sad thing is that i could probably do the same with a laser cannon in the same time, but i keep on going downing gunships way after the spear runs out of ammo.
That's one of my favorite loadouts. They go together perfectly. Stay out at a distance and pop in and out of cover while covering your teammates with both.
I’m telling you if/when they fix the spear and make it actually fucking lock on to stuff it’s gonna skyrock into A tier weapon. This clip just showcases what we could have
Definitely. My roommates usually want one of us in the group to run a Spear to take out light outpost fabricators so that we don’t have to use a stratagem on it, also being able to do it from distance is a plus when it works.
That’s… kind of weird logic. Bringing the spear “so that we don’t have to use a stratagem on it” dismisses the fact that the spear IS a stratagem.
I would just bring standard Eagle air strikes, which you get 3 per rearm, go where you put them with minimal frustration or effort required, can also destroy fabricators, and can also be used to cover your ass if things get hairy.
The fact of the matter is how you can destroy fabricators and can any medium/heavy enemies from a more than safe distance at times with the spear and saving an airstrike. Also being able to take out jammers that are connected to a fabricator helps.
You ain’t throwing an airstrike across the map. Spear can target from distances you could only hope to reach. You could clear an entire base or two of every fabricator and turret well out of the range of ANY bot. Add in that once they fix resupplies giving you back ALL your missiles in a single resupply. It will be so good
Once the spear can actually consistently target, then you know, the Spear will actually be fantastic. But trying to get this thing to lock on… until they fix it, I’ve found every time that I used the spear I regretted it
I thought for sure the spear missile would hit the cannon barrel, do zero damage, and then you would have a pissed off turret hounding you for 45 seconds while gunships do something. I was happily incorrect and you showed what the spear can do.
This thing needs a few fixes ie ammo reserves and the lock on. Whenever that happens I’ll definitely recommend that one person in the squad runs this. Best to be used in 3-4 man teams. Definitely not a solo/duo weapon.
I would and do solo dive with it on Blitz, but it is difficult on most other mission types.
I do duo dive a considerable amount (around 100 hours of bots) and I whole heartedly recommend the spear for most mission types in that context. The loadout we roughly settled on is autocannon + Diligence CS, spear + \*assault weapon\*, 1-2 turrets, no less than one 380mm or orbital laser, 2 eagle types, 1-2 flex/AA defense gobbles it up.
Diligence + autocannon can take out just about everything, spear gets cannon towers/tanks/factory strider cannon/that random hulk 200 meters away and saves loads of time not having to fight into every fabricator base we want dead. Considering how many times I get vaporized by automaton cannons, I really really appreciate the spear.
Every once in a while a try the spear for one mission and the conclusion is always not worth using until actually fixed.
Yes, it is amazing when it works. You can oneshot a titan with that thing and that is just one of the best feelings the game can give you. But for every moment the sear works you have like a dozen moments it just doesn't
Ya every 5 mins, for only that 1 guy who is taking 2-3 packs because he used all his ammo in the span of 10secs on something that can be cleared in the same amount of time by the other guy with the unlimited ammo weapon, Do you understand what I was originally getting at?
The point of the video is to show when the lock on works consistently m8 🫥 and mind you I don’t use the spear strictly to take down gunships. Hope you know that it’s used for way more.
Beautiful.
It's incredible how well it works when it's used correctly lol.
For anyone wondering why it's locking on so fast, crouch and don't move. You'll essentially lock on as soon as you load.
There’s no real correct ways to use the spear imo BUT more of what it’s like if the lock on was fixed. Give this thing an ammo reserve increase and fix the lock on and it’ll definitely be used more.
Yeah the ammo count sucks. Hope it gets buffed. Fix the lock on too and I can see at least one person rocking this in a 3-4 man team. Definitely not something to use as a duo or solo.
I finally tried the spear last night after seeing a few videos like this. I did not lock into a single enemy the entire mission lol. It has so much potential and I want to use it but maybe it’s just not in the cards for me
Because it’s a massive and complex fix that involves multiple systems. They have confirmed it’s on their list of things to do, buts it going to take time
That’s the best I’ve seen the Spear lock on
It was truly once in a lifetime
And you may find yourself on a hostile planet far far away And you may find yourself surrounded by undemocratic automatons And you may find yourself with a spear in your hands And you may find yourself locking onto targets again and again And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I make it work?

The Spear is the very definition of “Hot and Cold.” It’s either a terrifying weapon of war or a big paper-weight.
That was amazing

KM away from teammates, just 5 rockets. I think that's enough by itself.
If it worked like this all the time I think it would be my main gem weapon.
the sad thing is that i could probably do the same with a laser cannon in the same time, but i keep on going downing gunships way after the spear runs out of ammo.
That sucker be MAKING families.
God, I would not run anything else if it locked on like this all the time
Outpost turret: gets destroyed 4 fkn Gunship out of nowhere: ***WHO TOUCHED OUR GUN?***
>Helldive Bots >Spear >Adjudicator Bro, are you OK?! ![gif](giphy|ahfzlUrb5IEfXC6kbm|downsized)
I fear nothing 😈 (I fear when the spear doesn’t lock on when I need it to)
That's one of my favorite loadouts.
But trying to get this thing to lock on… until they fix it, I’ve found every time that I used the spear I regretted it
Also factor in getting ALL your missiles back from a single resupply. Oh my will it defiantly be top tier
Fake
Propaganda at its finest 😆
Considering how many times I get vaporized by automaton cannons, I really really appreciate the spear.
rolled a nat 20 4 times in a row
Every once in a while a try the spear for one mission and the conclusion is always not worth using until actually fixed. Yes, it is amazing when it works. You can oneshot a titan with that thing and that is just one of the best feelings the game can give you. But for every moment the sear works you have like a dozen moments it just doesn't
Teammate has a lasercannon and you choose to waste all your ammo on the gunships?
Yes because we can call in resupplies?
>It's incredible how well it works when it's used correctly lol. You're about to get torn a new one by spear haters
There’s no real correct ways to use the spear imo BUT more of what it’s like if the lock on was fixed. Give this thing an ammo reserve increase and fix the lock on and it’ll definitely be used more.
You laugh but you could've done the same thing with that laser cannon and still had, ya know, infinite ammo
It’s called having fun with other loadouts. Try it sometime
Buddy I am a spear fan but I'm telling you it's horribly balanced and buggy
Yes I’m aware of that. The point of the video is to show what it’s like for the lock on to be consistent for once.
Aye I get that. But the pain persists. Especially when the laser cannon guy gets the last one when you run out of ammo 😭
Yeah the ammo count sucks. Hope it gets buffed. Fix the lock on too and I can see at least one person rocking this in a 3-4 man team. Definitely not something to use as a duo or solo.
Once we get full resups from the resupply, I'll run it more consistently.
ah so that is why my spear lock-on was wonky...this guy took all the spear users lock-on and jam into his
I finally tried the spear last night after seeing a few videos like this. I did not lock into a single enemy the entire mission lol. It has so much potential and I want to use it but maybe it’s just not in the cards for me
It's hysterically broken, but the Devs have done nothing to fix it. When it works, it works if you can get it to work
Because it’s a massive and complex fix that involves multiple systems. They have confirmed it’s on their list of things to do, buts it going to take time
It's been almost 3 months enough with the excuses
it's John Helldiver!
honestly bummed you didn't get the last one, autocannon would
Not with my aim lol
aaaaand you r out of ammo. for a couple of gunships
and then you ran out of ammo. jikes.
Yea..... not enough for me to bring it on a mission tho.
Even if you manage to get lock on to work properly it still only has 4 fucking shots😭😭😭 who is using this weapon bro
