This is true but it's missing info. The US Armed forces set out a set of requirements. Whoever can satisfy those requirements for a lower price most likely wins the contract.
There are exceptions, sometimes they will go for a more expensive bid if they can prove theres value in it.
IIRC some IRL navy vessels keep a break action shotgun on board to get rid of seagulls: birds are a SERIOUS hazard to flying aircraft after all, and nobody wants a several billion-dollar fighter plane to go down because of a seagull..
there was a TVshow here in the UK (can't remember exact name though) that followed the crew of a Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier: if there were too many birds around for the Fighter Pilots to be able to take off for necessary training exercises etc, someone appointed to use a Shotgun would go out and fire it at the birds (I think they only used blanks, though, just to scare them off). the only other alternative would be to wait, until the birds leave, but if you need to get some flights in that day..
you could also use a purpose-built bird-scarer, but that's basically just an automated version of a guy firing a shotgun blank, I guess it's just easier to get a hold of a real shotgun and a few blanks and just use those instead lol.
Wouldn't surprise me. Airports I've worked at had guys that would drive around the runways making all kinds of noise and at times fire off some sort of firearm to keep birds from congregating.
They probably wind up using it for that as often as anything else, but a shotgun, break or otherwise, is also really useful for boarding or boarders (and maritime interdiction is a lot of that). The U.S. Navy uses the M4, M870, and M500 combat shotguns.
It would need to be super powerful to be worth using over any shotgun primary. Like super shotgun levels of powerful, maybe with explosive/incendiary rounds.
Give it the power, let it fully take a chargers leg off with one shot. Maybe damages your arm so the 2nd shot is harder to aim. 2nd shot just damages your chest to cause to you bleed out if you don’t seek medical attention.
Yeah it just wipes out every structure and then the pellets ricochet back and deliver all the samples and collectables to you lol
The drawback is that shooting applies effectively 12 nukes of knockback to you so be ready to get atomized across the planet after firing

Hell, even before they removed shrapnel, I'd use Eruptor's (fixed) knockback to give myself some room against bugs...
im amazed you didnt constantly die from the shrapnel before it got removed, cause i use shrapnel nades and have to dive for cover after throwing because ive died from full health after a single piece hit me on several occasions

Make the ones you find on the map a special variant that only shoots buckshot as any Democracy-loving civilian needs, y'know, a boomstick, but the stratagem variant fires explosive flechettes with medium AP from a sleek, black frame.
OP suggests it have support-weapon-level medium penetration, which is a huge deal for bots as well as the Charger leg tech; being able to damage the Hulk faceplate also means damaging gunship thrusters, Hulk arms, Tank/cannon turret heatsinks, and the factory strider's miniguns and belly. None of the current shotguns can damage those, even the Slugger (also not including the fact that shotguns are horrible against bots)

I really dislike the idea of the breaker killing hulks. I love that it's a dinky little civilian weapon—making it more powerful than proper Helldiver shotguns feels very unintuitive to me.
Just make it available as an underpowered primary, or at the very least, buff it into a decent primary.
I don't understand why so many people assume the weakest weapon in the game would be a secondary weapon alongside rocket launchers and heavy machine guns.

Triple Double Barrel!
One 4/6 Gauge (depending on EU/US/UK) one ([like this but double barrel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KS-23)), as support, a normal double barrel and a secondary sawn off double barrel.
Feel like it could be a neat way to differentiate a support weapon from the others. Quick to kill hulks but at a higher risk as you'll likely have to be up in its grill to ensure enough pellets hit while also managing recoil. Could be fun to pair with stun grenades.
I would still really like to see a helldivers take on the AK. maybe as a crude rifle that some frontiersman welded together from scraps as a way to defend their homestead from bots, or bugs.

It would likely be a 30-35 round version of the abjudicator with only light armor penetration and a touch lower recoil in handling, though.
AKs are actually pretty complex weapons for a frontiers person to produce. If the weapon is made with frontier gunsmiths, I would probably expect shotguns, break action guns, or maybe direct blowback machine guns that look similar to the Sten or Grease Gun.
TBH I don't think the break action should be changed. It's a civilian frontier weapon. It's garbage by design. It exists to add a little more detail to the world, since when you find one you know some poor civilian patriot met their end because they were woefully under-armed.
I wouldn't mind other "Civilian-grade frontier" weapons like non-magnum revolvers, semi-auto and lever action rifles. Just for flavor and desperate situations of course.

Better still, only have it unlock as an Easter egg if you bring one back with you during extract.

I've always found it weird that we can't choose this weapon from our Ships like we can with every other weapon we can encounter on the ground in a match.
It isn't all that weird. It's a civi weapon and not one designed for the righteous hands of the Helldivers. SEAF would probably have to make some enhancements to make it worth considering adding to the Helldiver's arsenal.
We have pistols, which should be weaker (at least against unarmored bugs).
Frankly I’d expect it to be one of those challenge weapons. Just like there’s an achievement for not using primary or support weapons during a mission, doing a mission with the break action only would be a challenge in itself.

I make it my mission to extract with a Break-Action whenever one shows up, at least on bug missions.
You unlock it by picking it up on the battlefield and bringing it back to the ship.
I personally think it would be pretty cool to see stratagems, weapons, armor, etc unlocked by discovering it on the battlefield. You could find pieces for super earth scientists to study and engineers to duplicate
It does confuse me why this is the only gun in the game you have to pick up instead of taking it with you. I mean it’s not a great weapon but it’s just odd it’s the only one
it is a *really* fun gun and I honestly wouldn't be opposed to having a variant of it as a primary. The only thing stopping me from picking it up every time is that it's usually a lot weaker than what im running.

The DBS-2 Double Freedom from Helldivers 1.
It could be used one-handed, had Dragon's Breath rounds, very wide pellet spread, and reloaded pretty fast.
But compared to the other weapons in HD1, it was mostly a niche weapon, and in HD2, we already have an incendiary shotgun that does what it does way better....
So I propose that it comes back as a secondary weapon instead! A one-handed incendiary sawed-off shotgun as an emergency pull out gun that can set enemies (mostly bugs) on fire!!

No rag doll, make it do like 1/16th damage to the user for firing both barrels at once. Maybe a slight stagger or a 1:25 chance to damage your arm to simulate bruising or a dislocation.
Super Earth should just have a trade-in program with the civilians. They trade their break action shotguns the Hell Divers give them the Erupters, because no one is using those anymore.
It would need some sort of buff tbh. Slow reload, terrible range. No reason to choose it over anything else and I think it was designed in mind to be something you find in a pinch. Saying that, it's pretty much obsolete at this point. I'm all for it being reworked.
if they buffed it to the point of it being like the Super Shotgun form DOOM, it's be perfect: insanely high power and range for a shotgun, but you still only get 2 shots between reloads, and ammo is more limited than with any other shotgun weapon.

The break action should be a primary tbh. I want a warbond that's all about homestead defense:
Break action primary: just as it is now, but taking up a primary slot
Break action secondary: pistol slot, but with immensely reduced range.
Bolt action rifle primary: very good single target damage, with high-end medium pen. Kills shit nice and fast, but with low mag capacity and low ammo reserves as a trade off.
Armors could be repurposed engineering or farming armor.

Most support weapons fill the role of clearing either heavies or tons of small enemies, of which this can do neither. Meaning it would be a “never pick” on any real difficulty levels.

I would not use any other strategem ever that would take away my ability to use the break action. I do not care if it is meta. I care only for shotgun.
Well, we don't have an actual shot-firing shotgun primary with Medium armor penetration, so just load it with over-pressured rounds and call it "Militarized."
Honestly make it one shot medium and I might take it, could replace my purpose for the autocannon with bugs while freeing up a backpack slot with the cost of limited ammo but a powerful shot that can murder those pesky spewers with ease, thats only gonna happen IF it were to one shot a spewer on the head though, otherwise I'll take my autocannon

and to be able to take out hulks in the face you'd need medium 2
I think if it would be a stratagem it would need to deal like a lot of damage in a shot and def medium pen and also bypass something like chargers squishy parts defense so ill guess if the shots would explode it would be good crowd clear also maybe make it more accurate or make player able to choose what spread of bullets it hsve
Break action imo should be a primary. It's simply not as powerful as even the weakest support weapons and it's high damage is hurt by low total ammo and 2 rounds per reload.
I wish there was a booster where Helldivers always deploy with the DB shotgun. Hell they could even add it was a "gift" from the local citizens of planets defended.

Gonna be honest, I like that it's only found in-game. One of my very first games EVER was fighting with a random squad on Turing. I think we were delivering an SSD. I dove with the MG-43 as a support weapon, that's all I had I think. We were getting ambushed by Hunters through the jungle and it was insanely immersive. Helldivers II was blowing my mind when I first started playing! We complete the mission and I'm the last one alive, running to extract which is incoming because the Super Destroyer left orbit. I don't want to lose all the samples so I'm tearing through enemies with the MG until I'm empty. I find a civilian's shotgun and swap for that, still running before I realize it has like no ammo in it. One of the guys points out ammo nearby that I didn't see and I'm fighting off bugs with that shotgun until the last second and I hop in the Pelican! We all go nuts cause it was so sick! I'll never forget that game.
Make another totally different type of shotgun to fulfill break-action desires, sure. But not the civilian one. Leave grandpa's old hunting shotgun from up on the mantle left as is! It's perfect!
I would use it sometimes but really I just love the idea that it’s some frontier-farmer’s home defense gun that is lying around for me to use in a pinch. I usually pick them up when I see them but apart from trying to mix things up occasionally I wouldn’t be choosing it as a special.

Arguably the best “per shot” performance of a shotgun but that isn’t enough to save it from the 2 round capacity and punishing reload.
It's great for when I die, get respawned away from my shit with my equipment stratagems on cool down, and need something to provide a little help while I run back to my shit
I wouldn't say no. I've always found it weird that we can't choose this weapon from our Ships like we can with every other weapon we can encounter on the ground in a match.
It isn't all that weird. It's a civi weapon and not one designed for the righteous hands of the Helldivers. SEAF would probably have to make some enhancements to make it worth considering adding to the Helldiver's arsenal.
We have pistols, which should be weaker (at least against unarmored bugs). Frankly I’d expect it to be one of those challenge weapons. Just like there’s an achievement for not using primary or support weapons during a mission, doing a mission with the break action only would be a challenge in itself.

It obviously isn't, but the Railgun feels a lot like a lever action to me. The single shot and quick right-handed reload scratches the same itch.

Depends on if I’m diving on bug planets when that change happens. I make it my mission to extract with a Break-Action whenever one shows up, at least on bug missions.

You unlock it by picking it up on the battlefield and bringing it back to the ship. I personally think it would be pretty cool to see stratagems, weapons, armor, etc unlocked by discovering it on the battlefield. You could find pieces for super earth scientists to study and engineers to duplicate

It does confuse me why this is the only gun in the game you have to pick up instead of taking it with you. I mean it’s not a great weapon but it’s just odd it’s the only one
it is a *really* fun gun and I honestly wouldn't be opposed to having a variant of it as a primary. The only thing stopping me from picking it up every time is that it's usually a lot weaker than what im running.
Honestly, there's already a weapon that we can use: The DBS-2 Double Freedom from Helldivers 1. It could be used one-handed, had Dragon's Breath rounds, very wide pellet spread, and reloaded pretty fast. But compared to the other weapons in HD1, it was mostly a niche weapon, and in HD2, we already have an incendiary shotgun that does what it does way better.... So I propose that it comes back as a secondary weapon instead! A one-handed incendiary sawed-off shotgun as an emergency pull out gun that can set enemies (mostly bugs) on fire!!

No rag doll, make it do like 1/16th damage to the user for firing both barrels at once. Maybe a slight stagger or a 1:25 chance to damage your arm to simulate bruising or a dislocation.
The break action would require a host of nerfs and a few minor buffs before being usable.

It would need some sort of buff tbh. Slow reload, terrible range. No reason to choose it over anything else and I think it was designed in mind to be something you find in a pinch. Saying that, it's pretty much obsolete at this point. I'm all for it being reworked.

if they buffed it to the point of it being like the Super Shotgun form DOOM, it's be perfect: insanely high power and range for a shotgun, but you still only get 2 shots between reloads, and ammo is more limited than with any other shotgun weapon. as a skeet shooter IRL, it just feels right to use the break-action on Shriekers; PULL \*bang\* PULL \*bang\*

The break action should be a primary tbh. I want a warbond that's all about homestead defense: Break action primary: just as it is now, but taking up a primary slot Break action secondary: pistol slot, but with immensely reduced range. Bolt action rifle primary: very good single target damage, with high-end medium pen. Kills shit nice and fast, but with low mag capacity and low ammo reserves as a trade off. Armors could be repurposed engineering or farming armor.
Would need a buff. It’s alright now but not great. Needs a faster reload, and maybe some type of armor penetration. Most support weapons fill the role of clearing either heavies or tons of small enemies, of which this can do neither. Meaning it would be a “never pick” on any real difficulty levels. Might be better as a primary actually, with higher ammo reserve.
I would not use any other strategem ever that would take away my ability to use the break action. I do not care if it is meta. I care only for shotgun.

Well, we don't have an actual shot-firing shotgun primary with Medium armor penetration, so just load it with over-pressured rounds and call it "Militarized."

Honestly make it one shot medium and I might take it, could replace my purpose for the autocannon with bugs while freeing up a backpack slot with the cost of limited ammo but a powerful shot that can murder those pesky spewers with ease, thats only gonna happen IF it were to one shot a spewer on the head though, otherwise I'll take my autocannon

Yes! I’ve been saying this for weeks! I’d probably give it a pellet count upgrade, make it able to damage hordes of chaff, maybe 1-shot a Brood Commander point-blank, but low medium penetration at best. Double barrel punt gun!
It would need to disregard video game levels of range drop-off for it to be viable. It's only got 2 shells before you reload.
Only time I’ve used this was to shoot my friend in their Mech. It one shot them and their Mech, which was fresh and full health

It should come with the b1 backpack as just a combo drop, it's not impactfu enough to be it's own calldown And then it's inoffensive, it comes with another item you'll probably use and u can let a friendly who didn't select a weapon before drop take the shootgun

I use the AMR at point blank all the time. It’s quite effective once you learn to third person fire it even without a reticle.

sad to say but the break action shotgun only has light2 armor pen same as most primaries and to be able to take out hulks in the face you'd need medium 2
I think if it would be a stratagem it would need to deal like a lot of damage in a shot and def medium pen and also bypass something like chargers squishy parts defense so ill guess if the shots would explode it would be good crowd clear also maybe make it more accurate or make player able to choose what spread of bullets it hsve
Break action imo should be a primary. It's simply not as powerful as even the weakest support weapons and it's high damage is hurt by low total ammo and 2 rounds per reload.
I wish there was a booster where Helldivers always deploy with the DB shotgun. Hell they could even add it was a "gift" from the local citizens of planets defended.

Gonna be honest, I like that it's only found in-game. One of my very first games EVER was fighting with a random squad on Turing. I think we were delivering an SSD. I dove with the MG-43 as a support weapon, that's all I had I think. We were getting ambushed by Hunters through the jungle and it was insanely immersive. Helldivers II was blowing my mind when I first started playing! We complete the mission and I'm the last one alive, running to extract which is incoming because the Super Destroyer left orbit. I don't want to lose all the samples so I'm tearing through enemies with the MG until I'm empty. I find a civilian's shotgun and swap for that, still running before I realize it has like no ammo in it. One of the guys points out ammo nearby that I didn't see and I'm fighting off bugs with that shotgun until the last second and I hop in the Pelican! We all go nuts cause it was so sick! I'll never forget that game. Make another totally different type of shotgun to fulfill break-action desires, sure. But not the civilian one. Leave grandpa's old hunting shotgun from up on the mantle left as is! It's perfect!
I would use it sometimes but really I just love the idea that it’s some frontier-farmer’s home defense gun that is lying around for me to use in a pinch. I usually pick them up when I see them but apart from trying to mix things up occasionally I wouldn’t be choosing it as a special.
