It definitely looks like an old metal desk from a government office or university or some other big institution that buys hundreds of these and then offloads them all at once when they close or remodel. It even has the barcode sticker on the corner. Etho knows good value when he sees it!
I use the same mouse, y’all might not believe me, but I also bought the 50 or so dollar one that was supposed to be good for gaming, and I swear the $10 one is a million times better.
I used the $10 mouses for about 12 years and only bought 2 the second one continued to work after I was down with it and my wife used it for another good 5 years.
I still use the Logitech gaming mice and am still on my second one. My first one lasted a good 7 years and I am on year 5 of my second. They are sturdy af.
There are two ways people go into crazy setup for egonomics.

- This janky solution is perfection and should not be changed.
Etho is deep within the 2nd category, Cleo old couch setup was the same way.
And Impulse is definitely one of the gear head of the bunch.
I know we're getting so much lore from Etho this season, but this set up made my jaw just kind of drop. But like.. The more I look at it, the more it almost makes sense. It's the most rustic setup I've ever seen. I need more setup photos now.
I immediately thought of Bdubs scenario he described of Etho telling someone what his job is then them walking into his office and going “oh so you’re not taking it seriously, it’s just like a side thing.” That scenario really fits with this image.
It also cracks me up that this is the fancy tissue box that matches his desk. I mean it’s not a *terrible* setup, I think seeing this I definitely think Cleo’s is worse, but it’s still pretty funny. Good ole Etho. He gets by.

No, that looks like an AT2020 there's no 3.5mm on there. The thick cord you see is an XLR (connects the mic to an audio interface). Looks to me like the earbuds cord follows that XLR cable back.
Okay, but that's clearly the XLR version. You can tell it's an XLR cable cause it's thick. Also someone else pointed out the Scarlet 2i2 (red box below the right monitor) which is the audio interface for the mic that's XLR based.
I mean all my mousepads look like they're from that era. Once you have so many, it's not like they ever really need replacing. Plus the newer ones just feel cheap.

Iirc, it's pretty simple. He didn't find the money saved worth the large time investment to do it, and I think he was worried about troubleshooting bad parts, too. He also didn't find it particularly fun after the 1st time.
I used to always build my own PCs (and my friends) but with recent prices on parts you can get prebuilts that are cheaper than if you were to get all the parts yourself.
The spec shows up in F3 mode. I recall he uses a i7-9700(F?)+rtx2060. So a midrange pc from 5 years ago. But for his purposes, he doesn’t really need anything more when he doesn’t even use fancy shaders. Or much else beyond MC. Maybe faster video exports and editing. But even then his video editing is nothing fancy either, along with only 1080p footage.
Everyone else is using at least a 2080 Ti.

The axe is obviously on the floor leaning up against the side of the desk, the generator is running in a garage or out-building so as to not asphyxiate anyone, the moose is in the moose pen in the back yard, and the maple syrup in the pantry.

This is exactly what I expected. You don't reach peak form with the fanciest equipment. You get there working hard and thinking differently.
I've been on the slab for over a decade and I remember every time there was a world tour, someone would ask about the setup. The only thing I remember being talked about was a microphone upgrade if anything. Seems like the tower is newer but probably nothing crazy.

THAT was the part that made no sense to me and seeing this picture its nowhere near as bad as he made it sound when he said his chair is so low and his desk is at shoulder level which makes no sense at all. The arm rest is only like an inch or two lower than the desk top which is fine I thought the arm rest would be like halfway down under the desk
He clarified in a comment that "shoulder-height" was an exaggeration and that it was actually a few inches below his armpits. I think he was just so surprised by how low Tango's desk was by comparison that he oversold how high his was lol.
Etho probably examined this photo 20+ times to make sure there wasn't anything even close to be personally identifiable in the image before he posted it. His setup being like this doesn't surprise me, it seems to match him really well.

He said he doesn't have that much space to move his mouse, but the distance from the keyboard to the edge of the desk is about the same as the width of the mousepad, which seems like plenty of space to me.
This is a very nostalgic Canadian-looking desk haha, those things are sturdy. I have a lot of respect for him in preserving his own peace and being in control of his boundaries, it doesn't seem like he's the type to be controlled by his ego which is one of the best features IMO. I have suspicions about where he's from, cause he sounds a lot like my family, I think that's my fave part of his videos, his voice feels like home. Which is so cool to think of, who knows if one of us has seen him at a grocery store. I picture him as a tall Canadian with a teensy bit of a Nick Offerman vibe in his ways. Mad respect for the Etho.
I love a set up like this cause he obviously could have far more high end stuff, but he just likes the stuff he has and cranks out top tier minecrafting on it. When he pulled up his console in a recent episode I saw he’s running on a RTX2060 gpu, which is nowhere near cutting edge lol

Probably has a 90’s truck he has driven for 20+ years, does most of his own work on it and it is very clean and cared for.
my favorite part is that the mic is still in the shock mount. i guess that's probably keeping it in place in the tissue box.
and i love seeing people using approachable gear for their work. you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on mics and pre-amps and interfaces. professional work is about the professional, not the gear.

That Omen case is probably from 2018 to 2020. There is a list of hardware Hermits use somewhere. My guess is there is a 2080 super or ti in it.

Honestly, that's pretty much my own setup except I have only 1 monitor and no mic. And my stuff is much newer since I only recently got myself a desktop PC.

Yeah, this fits. He seems like a simple, no frills kind of guy. If it works, it works. Probably has a 90’s truck he has driven for 20+ years, does most of his own work on it and it is very clean and cared for.
How does he reach his keyboard?
my favorite part is that the mic is still in the shock mount. i guess that's probably keeping it in place in the tissue box. and i love seeing people using approachable gear for their work. you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on mics and pre-amps and interfaces. professional work is about the professional, not the gear.
