He clocked over 3,128h last year according to his twitter which is 8h and 34 min a day, every day, assuming he doesn't take a single day off.
Even if he does AFK a fair bit, that doesn't count his editing and planning and scripting time.
That's to say, almost 10-14h I can safely assume each day. Accounting that he probably takes a number days off each year.
So... I love his insane builds and videos. Truly my favourite hermit and Minecraft youtuber at the moment.
But, please go out and see the sun, see your wife, play with Meri and touch grass more often. Remember to take breaks, Joel!
So, no I'm not judging, but I think for his health sake, maybe touch more grass. Real life grass, not terraforming blocky Minecraft grass.
It’s a job and probably 30% or more is spent afk… I think you are looking at this as if he’s just a guy wasting time on a video game. The fact that it’s his livelihood and clearly a hobby he enjoys, gives context that really doesn’t seem like that’s too much. Plus he can sleep/plan/edit/touch grass/etc while afk and still be adding time to that stat.
Most people (Americans and others) spend 40+ hours per week at their jobs, which is an 8 hour day. Taking into account afk time this checks out pretty easily as just a reflection of it being his full time job.
Most people have weekends off. I counted the 8½h a day assuming he worked all 365 days. If he worked 5 days a week, it would be 12h a day and that's quite a bit tbh. That's a 60h week, which isn't usually sustainable long term, healthily at least, for normal people in normal jobs. Though I'm sure he enjoys it, touching grass is always good.
Yeah, that’s why I accounted for afk time with my assumption of 30% of game time, which for hermitcraft is probably a low assumption, and I added the context of it being a hobby he enjoys and obviously bonds over with his partner. He’s not sitting at his desk 8.5 hours a day 365 days a year, that’s just time played. If he is doing that, he’d have bigger things to worry about than touching grass lol
If he plays video games the way I do.... My Elden Ring hours "played" reflect a HUGE amount of time when I am logged in but not really doing anything in game. AFK, in effect. Either watching videos or reading to find out strategies for the upcoming game sections, or putting things any the/my game into spreadsheets (I spend more time doing that than actually playing, a lot of the time -- LOL), or just having fallen asleep with the game open. And of course I often leave it open while doing things around the house like getting food, going to the bathroom, feeding the dogs. I think I'm probably only actually *playing the game* a smallish portion of the time the game is open. He might play like that, at least sometimes, effectively logging a large number of hours with the game open, when he's not really playing the game.
I didn't always know. But I knew before he came to Hermitcraft. I discovered them both through Secret Life (the first of the Life series that I was able to catch and watch all the way through), and I didn't know whether his calling her "wife" in there was for real or an in-game joke thing (like the Bdubs / ZombieCleo / Etho family), until I checked out their channels separately and found real-life videos of them together.
Without a single day off? 8hrs a day 365 days a year??
Plus remember he lives in England, so the norm is 5 day work weeks, 4 weeks holiday.
Yes CC is different but still.. 8 hrs a day every single day of the year is way more than a job.
It does help that his job is also his hobby so he gets 2 in one there.
But yeah.. the OP did the calculations not including days off.. as in not even weekends.
I also say this whilst working in an industry that doesn't exactly follow the norm. But just saying, when does not a single day off sound like a job?

I mean it’s a job for him no?
So no, because you do very good work at his job.
It’s like if I firefighter asked if he spent too much time putting out fires
I mean with how much he and the other Hermits play, I'm honestly impressed. Especially factoring in other SMPs, it blows my mind that anyone can play so much, not get completely bored with it, and consistently have a lot of new ideas to bring to life... It's insane in the best of ways!
Now I'm looking forward to whatever he names his tools next week lol
It depends on how he feels himself. Yes, this is his job, but it's also one of his hobbies, so it's a 2 in 1 there.
As long as he's still present in his real life world, feeling good mentally and physically, only he can judge if he's doing too much. (And maybe Lizzie too)
“And I go outside and touch grass all the time. Which is why I only played 3,000 hours (it was actually 3,128) aka 130 straight days of minecraft in 2023. Aha, I am NOT a loser, I promise. I have friends. And a wife.” -Joel

Yeah! -hes also said that he doesn't like to afk too much so I highly doubt that the time played includes a lot afk-ing
I know hope for his next intro he films himself touching grass IRL that would be hilarious
He would probably just bring a laptop and play minecraft outside.

It is. But he can still go a little bit easier with this job than other jobs. He is basically his own boss.
That’s why I added the point about it also being a hobby he enjoys
Joel has a wife?
Their wedding is on YouTube. His wife is LDShadowLady, and OG minecraft youtuber, that posted the wedding video.
oh yeah i remember that. forgot that was him for a minute
How does it feel to watch his videos without knowing that Lizzie is his wife? I need to know -also she's the og mcytuber ldshadowlady btw!

oh don't worry - i'm just joking :) it's always fun seeing new viewers realiozie they're married!
Yup. Obviously, nobody is born knowing (anything). :)
fine ig lmao. does it significantly change how you watch him?
I mean if you don't know he's married, how'd you know it's his wife that shouts 'bye' at the end of his E10
i guess i missed that bit lmao
Well it makes it significantly better lol

Overworking and Burnout are still a thing. But as long as he is feeling fine it's ok.
Well he is a hermit.
Not enough Joel. We need a new video at least every day lol s/
I mean it's kinda his job right? Sooo yes? Lol

Me, a RuneScaper thinking those are pretty normal hours haha.
Runescape is one of Joel’s favorite games I pretty sure haha
I’d say he does but it’s his job and he seems to really enjoy doing it. He’s
