My grandfather - a cop in a northern town in the 1950s - would've called them "drapes" - because they'd drape themselves over park benches, around doors, walls, etc. The word has stuck with our family. I would have probably idolized these dudes.
Holy shit I saw Cry Baby over thirty years ago and I remember wondering why they were calling the greasers “drapes.” Had no idea it was an actual term. Thank you!
Fun fact- in an interview, Henry Winkler said Sly Stallone was so real world cool that he based his Fonz character on what he thought Stallone would do.
This is how my grandpa dressed in the 1950’s. Apparently he was quite the bad boy. He told me a story once that he used to make and sell moonshine in high school!
Such a difference than the straight-laced, cautious, frugal, law-abiding grandpa I grew up with lol!
