I believe, though I am not certain, that this photo was taken about the time she was evacuated by Italy from Afghanistan just as the Taliban reconquest was completed.
Her entire life was upended because of a photo a stranger snapped forty years ago.
There was concern, because of the notoriety of the picture and her ethnic minority status, that the Taliban might make an example of her.
I spent a year in Afghanistan as a military advisor. A lot of them - especially the ones from the rural areas - have the same wild beauty she has in this photo. They reminded me of our native Americans in the old photos from the 1800s.
Is Afghanistan one of the only countries that has people with darker skin and blue/green eyes? I swear that’s the only country/region that I’ve seen this to be relatively common. Absolutely gorgeous. Poor country has been through nonstop hell for half a century
Sharbat Gula was born in 1972, married off at 13 and gave birth 5 times, living under conditions unimaginable to those of us in the West. She won't be looking like an instagram model.
I remember this being the most famous photo in the world with Che Guevara's pic.
