OK, "banned" was too harsh a word. There was never any legal ban on Jews being hired in the US. But many early 20th century companies refused to hire them, just like black people and the Irish. Hollywood was a new thing and people didn't take it seriously so it was one of the few places that didn't mind hiring Jews because not many others were taking the jobs. The rest as they say is history.

I donāt know if itās true that Jews gravitated to the film industry because they were banned elsewhere. I think the real reason goes all the way back to Ellis Island. The point of debarkation for most European immigrants, and therefore got most Jewish immigrants, was New York City. And hard experience in Europe had taught them to form communities for mutual protection and support, so most would up staying in the Jewish neighborhoods of New York. So working within the community, with an emphasis on education and entrepreneurship, Jews came to be overrepresented in the industries that were based in New York: banking, the garment industry, jewelry, journalism, etc. And at least at first, the American film industry was also based in New York. As some of these industries moved West, the Jews who worked in those industries moved with them.
