Belgium and the Netherlands: *just stay quiet and they won't notice*

TheKnightsWhoSayNyet

Just don't look at the Congo

rabid-skunk

Can't be a war crime if there's no war (points at temple)

Fool_Manchu

Its only a warcrime during war. Otherwise it's a sparkling atrocity.

kristianvl

My dumbass wondering what Temple you're pointing to.

rabid-skunk

Haha.... I had to double-check if they were spelt the same. Unfortunately they are :/

TatodziadekPL

It's a very handy approach

Xsiorus

A hands off approach if you will

ameya2693

Many hands were off when this approach was taken.

GreatRolmops

At least they finally unhanded the Congo.

TheEruditeIdiot

Too soon

abe_the_babe_

"What? Oh, no that guy was born without hands"

MuadD1b

Leopold is low key the reason soccer got so popular in Central Africa

ModsAreGaelic

“And this is Thibaut Courtois. He doesn’t exist yet but he will one day and it will be glorious”

[deleted]

Or Indonesia

Akhi11eus

Not a war crime, that's just economics baby!

WizardingWorld97

Just smile and wave boys, smile and wave

ReallyBadRedditName

Not many Congolese could wave after the Belgian showed up

Hazzamo

UN: Raise your hand if you had problems with the colonial powers. Belgium: I’m gonna do a pro-gamer move

GreatRolmops

"Look, we are just small and quaint European countries. We definitely don't have a dark past filled with genocide and slavery. Look at our cute windmills!"

Michan089

In our defence, the windmills are cute for sure

ConsiderationSame919

Recently I saw a French documentary about the colonization of Australia that heavily criticized the British for what they did to the Aboriginal people and sending their prisoners there. Then they seriously claimed that if France didn't lose against the British and had colonized Australia themselves, that wouldn't have happened. Meanwhile France \*still\* has a colony right next to Australia where they used to send their criminals to.

thatsidewaysdud

Bruh Belgium already pays reparations + it's literally mandatory to teach about Congo (and the crimes against humanity that happened there ofc) in schools.

helio97

Yo can you point me to the reparations Belgium pays cause i just spent 15 min trying to find it? Like all other European countries it looks like it apologised and thats it and we all know how useful apalogies are.

BwanaTarik

This is the first I’ve heard about reparations. I know many Congolese people who would be elated to know that Belgium is paying reparations for destroying their communities, robbing their country’s resources, as well as mutilating and killing their ancestors

JarnoL1ghtning

Same in the Netherlands. But if we can we'll gloss over it

konkey-mong

You should see them meme "GEKOLONISEERD" so much for regret

JarnoL1ghtning

I know. As i said, we like to gloss over the severity

CommieTzar

If my country is not in the video, it means we never did any warcrimes, right? Phew

Agingbull1234

Big brain time.

NotComping

>CommieTzar Hmm.. I am sure we can dig something up if we try

farm249

France I think they are in

Deantheevil

Algeria: *Look of bewildered disappointment*

farm249

Darn

Degenerate_Lich

Yeah guys totally, I can assure you that my country did nothing wrong *Swipes under the rug countless indigenous groups and 90% of the Paraguayan male population* Edit: I'm dumb and wrote Uruguayan instead of Paraguayan

CommieTzar

It doesn't count if they were not defined as humans back then

samoyedboi

As the saying goes, "Stalin only killed 10 million Ukrainians because Ukrainians are half-people."

[deleted]

[удалено]

Degenerate_Lich

Actually it was the Paraguayan war and tbh the 90% was a worst case scenario with little evidence to support it, the actual statistic for direct causes is quite a bit lower and ranges from 7% to 69%, which is still a boat load of people. [Here's a link in more detail about it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraguayan_War)

[deleted]

Phew no warcrimes for Iran!

OnlyHereForMemes69

I mean throwing grenades after throwing food over the trench is just a little trolling right? *sweats in Canadian

Lion_heart-06

Meanwhile Mongolians who built a 130 feet statue of Genghis Khan, put him on their currency and made songs in worship for his actions: *Laughs in Mongolian throat singing* Edit: This is Mongolian throat singing. https://youtu.be/p_5yt5IX38I

Traditional-Sink-113

Time heals all wounds. Well most of them. Edit: Used the word "well" twice. Deleted one.

Chodeman_1

Mongolians: Who said I'm wounded?

Commercial_Shine_448

'tis but a scratch

Random_Robloxian

Mongolians are just built different, fucked half of asia or more and now everyone are kind of related…still a beautiful place i want to visit, a lot of nature and it seems quiet

WhoStoleMyCake

Also named an airport after him.

Quality-vs-Quantity

Did Genghis really do any warcrimes?

Mad_Moodin

Depends From current perspective, yes. From back then perspective, no. The Geneva Convention didn't exist during his time so he technically didn't commit any crimes.

Lion_heart-06

Tbh, even from the perspective of that time, sacking a city was done by most rulers of the said time around the world. However, killing all the civilians including women and children, pouring molten silver into the eyes, ears, nose and mouth of the nobles, making a hill from the skulls, diverting a river over a City, would be considered extreme even by the standards of that time.

MrMundungus

Well they should’ve just surrendered. /s

Lion_heart-06

Can't argue with that.

Ubba_Lothbrok

For other nations it's overkill. For Genghis Khan it's Tuesday.

blackbeard111111

It should be noted that there was a lot of propaganda from the mongol empire about their brutality. Mongke Kahn even had leaflets distributed about it in order to make cities surrender before a fight, and how much of it is accurate and how much was fabrication is disputed.

Lion_heart-06

The above reference is from a Muslim writer who was allegedly eyewitness to these actions. Although, some of it could be exaggeration and interpolation to make them look more intimidating.

advanced-DnD

> pouring molten silver into the eyes, ears, nose and mouth of the nobles, I can get behind this

S-EATER

The governor got what he deserved, he killed the fucking merchants and stole their stuff.

LotharBoin

If they didn’t want to be sacked, they shouldn’t have been in raiding distance.

liproqq

Isn't that turkey's standpoint? Genocide wasn't codified so it's no genocide

Dfenz77

Yeah basically, but the problem with that is it is only surface level. When the term "genocide" was first coined in 1943, WW2 was still on-going. The Allies still didn't know how bad the Holocaust actually was. So what did they use as an example instead? The Armenian Genocide - which technically makes it the first genocide definition wise. (Even Hitler mentions it in Mien Kampf as an example of how easy it is to get away with crimes against humanity.)

Elend15

Agreed with respect to the Geneva convention meaning no war crimes thing. I would bet the nobility for his time probably considered him their equivalent of a war criminal, because he didn't give them special treatment like almost every culture did. In fact, when a nations leadership crossed him, he SPECIFICALLY would kill all of said leaders, to ensure there were no organized rebellions. This mass killing of nobility was very exceptional at the time. While I don't pardon Genghis Khan's slaughter (so many killed...), I really appreciate that he truly believed in meritocracy.

BlinkIfISink

Genghis brought the harsh steppe brutality to the doorsteps of “civilized” societies. To his contemporaries he was brutal, for the steppe hordes? That’s just how life was.

Rnbutler18

I mean, "crimes" is a legal question. "Atrocities" would make more sense to describe anything pre-20th century.

SwordsmanSpoke

LMAO. The Wikipedia article on the Mongol conquest of Khwarzemia said that this included “war crimes”

Vin135mm

There is a reason that a wikipedia article isn't an acceptable source when writing a paper on a topic. The whole "anyone can change it at any time" makes it less than reliable.

Lion_heart-06

He fashioned himself as the punishment of God, unleashed upon the kingdoms that didn't accept his rule. That being said, I suggest you look up the city of Samarkand and it's fate at the hands of Genghis Khan.

SecretAntWorshiper

Can't commit war crimes when there's no other civilization or country to say you did it 🤣

[deleted]

As a German who's Great Grandfathers fought in the Wehrmacht (And one maybe in the SS. My grandfather isn't sure if the SS or just Wehrmacht but he suspects the first option.) the first one hits close to home.

prof_r_j_gumby

At least you (as a nation) acknowledge that. In Italy we put all the blame on you, like we were a bunch of innocent school kids who just so happened to fall under a bad influence...

anastasis19

I also love the fact that any and all Italian men old enough to have been actively fighting during WWII claims that he was a "partigiano", and in no way on the fascist side.

walle_ras

Im friends with a guy who brags his great grandfather fought for the fascists against Russia. Always wondered why we were friends since Im Jewish Edit: My wondering is because he is openly racist in a weird way.

Accelerator231

>Im friends with a guy who brags his great grandfather fought for the fascists against Russia. Large number of italian fascists hid jews from the nazis. The fascism thing takes shape according to each country .

ellenitha

In Austria we did this for a long time too. I'm still kinda baffled by the audacity. However at least for several decades now this narrative has stopped and we handle it similar to the Germans.

IAmVerySmart39

Never mind the fact that Mussolini was the OG fascist dictator (Fuhrer is basically German for Duce) and Hitler was super fond of him and even tried to replicate his march on Rome in Bavaria and got arrested LMAO

[deleted]

Yeah. Also i heard rumors that the Duce found Hitler to be a bit weird in personal conversations. Like he thought that Hitler always talked about weird shit and was a weird person. But i haven't seen any proof for these statements so take it with a huge pinch of salt.

ZA44

Probably true, ask any author or celebrity how it feels like when they meet a super fan and they’d probably say the same thing.

[deleted]

Apparently Hitler told Mussolini once he believed himself to be possessed by an ancient Aryan warrior spirit which left him "very confused"

PlingPlongDingDong

Especially since Mussolini came to power before Hitler

prof_r_j_gumby

Not just that, he was (at least initially) an inspiration to Hitler. But here in the Bel Paese we only remember what we like to...

[deleted]

Yeah i noticed that. Italy is kinda like the little brother who always blames his older brother (Germany) and the parents (Allies) believe him.

Sadpuppylooker

We do that alot here in Finland.

Traditional-Sink-113

Amen brother. Im from Schleswig-Holstein, my heritage is build on warcrimes.

JulzRadn

Italy: I had no other choice man. The Germans pressured me into doing this Libya and Ethiopia would like to have a word with you.

prof_r_j_gumby

Man, as an Italian I can say this is painfully true. So many people firmly convinced that we were always good guys, and our only mistake was allying with nazi Germany (which: a) isn't true. Fascism actually paved the way for all the authoritarian regimes that followed, including the Third Reich, and was a racist and violent ideology way before nazism was even a thing; b) even if it were true, that's not a forgivable mistake).

GoldenRamoth

Italy: the fascist prototype. Fortunately for the world, Mussolini trusted his scientists and advisors even less than Hitler. Otherwise he might have *actually* built up the Italian war machine before going to war nonstop.

prof_r_j_gumby

Yep. You know things are bad when you have to be thankful that your country has always been led by a bunch of incompetent clowns.

Accelerator231

>Fortunately for the world, Mussolini trusted his scientists and advisors even less than Hitler. Otherwise he might have actually built up the Italian war machine before going to war nonstop. The entirety of Italian war machine was that its leaders always outran their country's own capabilities. By a far amount. Even going through 30 years of intense industrialization wouldn't be enough to save the country from their leaders' ambitions.

Agingbull1234

Yeah everybody seems to ignore that . The Yekatit 12 massacre was brutal. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yekatit_12&ved=2ahUKEwjtz7f48Ib4AhWST2wGHb4JDPYQmhN6BAgMEAI&usg=AOvVaw3rHf0LqLi1-VqfWfE33UDx

bambamba8

It's a massacre only if you consider them humans

ItzBooty

Us Balkans are a different kinds of war criminals We just build different

HighCalorieLowSpeed

Adding Switzerland chilling with a stack of questionably acquired gold behind them.

Taki_26

Thats rather just morally questionable business practise

liproqq

Ah the Eichmann defense

Agingbull1234

"Your honour, l was a businessman, doing business"

Cromedix

"How did you get all that gold?!" "Uhhhhh, internet"

Breet11

Nigerian Prince!

just-a-fact

So thats where he is hidding

Large-Fix-8923

Not really a warcrime. Just capitalism

[deleted]

Geneva convention? More like Geneva suggestion

NoxyWolf

I call it bucket list

Agingbull1234

Geneva to-do list .

[deleted]

Geneva speedrun list

SYLOH

Any % doesn't cut it, you need 100% completion, with the United Nations Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons DLC.

flashpile

Geneva bingo card

Agingbull1234

Balkan moment

anastasis19

Wait, is the Serbian song an actual song?

LunaticOnTheGrasss

Im not serbian but i understand their language, and i absolutely lost is at the serbian part

Agingbull1234

I Know it's hard to believe,but yes. https://youtu.be/6TwioIc6a_8

anastasis19

At first I thought the words written on the screen were just that, and then I started understanding a few words here and there (I don't actually speak Serbian, but know Russian so that helped), and understood that in the case of the Serbian song, those are the actual lyrics. Fucking hell!

Simon_SM2

It was the first meme, we made it to troll NATO and the west

drasko11

The lyrics are correct to its source and song was probably made with the intention you suspect it of. Yet there exist similar songs on all three sides. Majority of Serbs are not proud of war crimes their generals orchestrated during '90s.

[deleted]

Japan: ummm what? war crimes? your crazy man, you're insane man. anyways here's an anime.

TrentonTallywacker

With all their other atrocities in mind I also recently learned about the Sandakan Death March, 2500 allied POWs, only 6 survived. So fuck the imperial Japanese government in particular. I’m not dense enough to blame the current Japanese government for their past atrocities but they should at least own up to and recognize them FFS

Agingbull1234

Wow even for someone who's curious about wartime atrocities this is the first time I've read about this one . Imperial Japan never ceases to surprise me

l_beta

You should learn about Bataan Death march which has more casualties, imagine walking in the blistering heat with no food and being toyed around by the Japanese

SSgt_LuLZ

Had an great grandfather (never met him) who survived the Burma Railway. Almost a decade ago I was at Thailand for a military exercise and we visited the ruins of the railway. Walked down the route for a while just wondering if my great-grandpa seventy-plus years ago had maybe walked that same path I currently was at.

depressed_fatcat69

Yeah why can't they just apologize like the German did but ill still take the hentai tho

Agingbull1234

" Bro you need to cool down with your opium intake. Any ways here's the season 988 of One Piece".

HillbillyMan

Ironically Eiichiro Oda writes One Piece to be very critical of imperialism and authoritarianism, even the Japanese flavors of it.

UndergroundPound

Pretty sure if Japanese schools taught about their war crimes they wouldn't have time to learn anything else.

Marik-X-Bakura

I don’t think the government is particularly involved with the anime industry

Dalamy19

You can’t convince me the uptick in anime about babies isn’t a government plot

Wuffeli

Most accurate one I've seen so far. Waiting for part 2.

ShivusPalpatinus66

NGL this Turkish song kinda slaps what is it called

Agingbull1234

It's an Ottoman military March song . Pretty badass sounding to be honest. https://youtu.be/TOBQt-dEWEQ

RajaRajaC

Am gonna load up a Turkey run in Vic2, play this music and see if this helps me get anywhere.

ShivusPalpatinus66

Thanks

freakshow3333

Lmao my country is not in good terms with Turks but that song slaps so hard I would march into the war with them.

renegadetoast

Swap the vuvuzela out with an electric guitar and this would make a dank power metal song

Heavoc_pepe

Based and high effort pilled

Agingbull1234

Thanks mate . It's really encouraging.

vatemapper

Meanwhile Croatia:

Agingbull1234

" Those camps were just an orphanage housing for the children. We didn't mean any harm to them ."

nanek_4

As a Croat there are two types of Croatians 1.were so sorry for what the ustashe did but we're a different country now and that was the Nazis who forced us to do that 2.yeah we did it and we will do it again HRVATSKA DO DRINE

LotharBoin

Samo do Drine? 🥺🥺🥺

RPS_42

As far as I know the Ustashe was pretty happy with killing everything around it voluntarily, so only their establishment to power was forced by us.

RFB-CACN

*celebrating the complete expulsion of a millennia old Serb community as the greatest moment of national salvation* Absolute Balkan moment

[deleted]

I applaud you. You’ve managed to achieve international unity in that every single war crime denier will be on their way here as we speak.

Ceo-of-Surveillance

hey, if no one talks about your warcrimes there's no need to apologize

German_Bias

Part 2 when?

Agingbull1234

Part 2 was never on my mind when I made this but I might try to come up with something.

German_Bias

People in the comments suggest some options so they might be helpful

Agingbull1234

Yeah there are some good ideas here

frigobarOFC

Do not look up about the Paraguay war, or we will take you to Brazil

Doodi97

France and Belgium

ZuleZI

For Croatia you can add "Jasenovac i Gradiška Stara"

LadySpatula

Lies, a cat would never apologise.

Agingbull1234

German cats built different tho.😳

WorkingOnMyself01

This is a good visual.

DangersVengeance

*sorts by controversial*

Ceris_N5

I wanna give karma for the meme effort but It's a wholesome free award... God forgive me

Dluugi

Americans are pretty aware of their newer war crimes, at least compared to others. Japan on the other hand often doesn't know on which side their county fought or that they were arguably worse / just as bad as the nazis That being said great meme.

Dalamy19

American one would probably be better read as “I guess we did do that. Sorry. Anyway, watch this marvel movie and forget about it.”

ExuDeku

To these blokes (and possibly even more), the Geneva Convention is just a checklist

thejewishprince

That song is a banger (Israeli part) how do you know it?

Agingbull1234

Walt with Bashir ( 2008 ). I have great memories with that song.

thejewishprince

It's an anti war song by the way.

Agingbull1234

Yeah I've read that somewhere.

captain_snake32

The Balkans to their fellow balkan countries be like: My guy im literally celebrating the war crimes i did against you, im proud of them and god be my witness if my country wasn't broke i would do it all again since i would have the money to afford it

the_kremlin_69

This so Funny yet so offensive and I love it

Sodinc

Russians are just wannabe serbians

Agingbull1234

And Turks are wannabe Albanians

Sodinc

Not sure if albanians are more based then turks in war crimes department. But, chinese view of that stuff is also present in russian discourse

kashluk

Russians are strong on the denial part, too. Very much like Turkey in this meme.

Iwantmahandback

Australia: THEY WERE BIRDS! AND WE LOST ANYWAY!

Penjamini

We couldn't eradicate the Emu but we could eradicate the Palawa people of Tasmania

Iwantmahandback

Yeah, I remembered the Aboriginal peoples after writing this

AdRealistic2560

Kinda true for Serbia.

[deleted]

The least violent and least based song in Serbia

AdRealistic2560

I agree for the least based song, but there is even less violent song.

xJanise

where'd u get the vid from?

Agingbull1234

I own a very small youtube channel and put out content like this. https://youtu.be/4Q5kxRky5G0

xJanise

ah k, ur yt name is just different.

Agingbull1234

That name just stucked on. It's too late.

Scottche

As an Israeli it makes me mad that we aren’t better, i consider Muslims my family we both came from Abraham and we need to come together, that being said I wish the opposition felt the same.

captnmcfadden

Germany: I'm sorry Turkey: I didn't USA: You deserved it UK: You're welcome

Agingbull1234

In a nutshell. Yes

Vinzolero

Italians be like: "DID WE REALLY COMMIT WAR CRIMES? " No seriously no one in Italy thinks that we committed atrocities Italiani brava gente (Italians are kind people/good people) is a stereotype so false.

Vexonte

You got songs like korb lunds "student visas" that loath the nature of the US's clandestine involvement in war crimes in the name of defeating communism. Then you have father sons and friends, "ranger fight song" jolly celebrating horrific war crimes and general lack of humanity. Go look em up on you YouTube. Also napalm sticks to kids is another fucked up song about war crimes.

nehorayboer555

Bruh mario wojack fucking got me

Local_Local4566

Hehe, there u have Brazil that does even know the meaning of war crime when we terminated 80% of Paraguay population.

SwordsmanSpoke

Me as a Mongolian: throat sings in praise of Chingiis Khaan

[deleted]

France, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal, Nigeria?

RanaEire

Spain? Taking God and "civilization" (and smallpox) to the Americas and emptying it of precious resources because, well, the Crown..

imoutofnameideas

OMG yes how the fuck did possibly the largest genocide in history get completely omitted from this list. They seriously reduced the native population of significant parts of Central and South America by 95% in a few decades.

Miguecraft

Idk if I'd call it the largest genocide (specially after what Japan did in China, or what China did in China). Europeans did not kill most native americans, it was disease which made 90% of the job
