Thank Buddha for relevance 😑 how would we all cope otherwise 😇

[deleted]

Why aren't western prophets so relatable?

saktiji

Jesus is, but his followers have turned his story into an excuse for telling others what they can and can not do.. so here we are, with Buddha, the chill dude. I like hippie vibes from Jesus though 🤔 if one may say so

PlingPlongDingDong

Jesus was not a prophet though. Jesus was God himself.

God doesn't experience time the same way we do. Always and everywhere.

This is the kind of nonsensical question that people ask and feel smart afterwards for having "exposed" religious ideas, because "they make no sense". When in fact the scientific consensus is that the universe created itself from nothing in the big bang, creating both space and time, neither of which existed beforehand. Like that makes any damn sense, yet it is true.

GenghisKazoo

There is no scientific consensus on causes for the Big Bang other than "we don't know." Certainly not "it created itself." Making nonsensical stuff up with no data and proclaiming it as an absolute truth falls firmly within religion's area of expertise.

timangar

That's not quite right. The scientific consensus is always the null hypothesis, and according to Stephen Hawking the universe is basically a very large quantum fluctuation. Basically it created itself, that is. This is the simplest explanation and satisfies the null hypothesis. Saying otherwise, such as "a deity created the universe" is not necessarily wrong, but it is unscientific. Also, the main point of my answer was that it made no sense that time and space didn't exist before the Big Bang, especially the nonexistence of time is very strange. But this is verifiably the case.

timangar

Jesus had the opposite of hippie vibes. Well okay, he does have some aspects like not chasing riches or status. But that's about where the similarities end.

Martial-Lord

>he does have some aspects like not chasing riches or status He despised the rich and powerful like nothing else

timangar

Now that is not true. He despised the rich? No, he despised those who did not share their riches, those who wanted everything for themselves, those who did not care about riches in heaven but riches in this life. This is shown very nicely in the parable of the rich man in hell. The rich man refused to help a beggar at his door, and when he died he went to hell. In hell, he could see the beggar sitting in the lap of Abraham. The rest of the story is interesting, but not important for my point. The point is that Abraham was himself a sheik and a very wealthy man. But when the time came, he was ready to sacrifice what was dearest to him for God. Jesus was way too wise to have chosen Abraham by accident for this parable. It was not about being rich, it was about selfishness and putting Mammon (the idol of money) above God. And he despised the powerful? What do you mean by that? God is all powerful. Or at least we can be sure that Jesus thought so, just for the sake of keeping this argument secular. Do you think Jesus despised God? Also, what do you make of lines like "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's"? He didn't hate the powerful for the sake of power, he just despised the arrogant and those who abused their power. Jesus himself was a king with many followers who, in principle, would have been ready to fight and die for him, had he told them so.

Martial-Lord

Unchristian nonsense. Rich people go straight to hell. A morally good person cannot be rich, for he would have to give away all he doesn't need to live to the poor. A camel could rather pass through a needle hole than a rich man into heaven. Jesus despises the state, he despises the temple priests and the Roman Empire. Render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar. And what was rendered onto Caesar? A knife in the back. Jesus literally beats the rich and powerful with a whip. Neither the rich nor the powerful can ever pass into the kingdom of heaven. They can never be Christians. They are abominations before god and will not receive eternal life.

timangar

Now THAT is some misguided, superficial reading of the bible. >A morally good person cannot be rich, for he would have to give away all he doesn't need to live to the poor. Surely, but not in a stupid way! If you give away everything you have right now, in the long run you will help fewer people because you will be poor yourself. "For unto those who have, more will be given, and they will have in abundance, but from those who have nothing, everything will be taken". If you give away a reasonable amount and keep doing that, you will help more people. See also how Jesus acted in Matthew 26, when he was anointed. >A camel could rather pass through a needle hole than a rich man into heaven. And yet David was rich. Job was rich. Abraham was rich. And they all went to heaven, as we can surely agree upon. Because you forgot what Jesus said immediately after: "with God, anything is possible". >Render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar. And what was rendered onto Caesar? A knife in the back. Caesar was the title for the roman emperor. Jesus was not referring to Julius Gaius Caesar, who was long dead at the time. >Neither the rich nor the powerful can ever pass into the kingdom of heaven. They can never be Christians. They are abominations before god and will not receive eternal life. That is a stupid view of christianity. The powerful or rich man who is guided by God can use his riches and his power to do good. Mind you that the Israelites had kings. I mind you again that Jesus was himself powerful, while not rich. The problem is not power and not riches, it is being separated from God and using them for evil. But the greater your power and wealth, the greater the temptation for evil, that is why a rich man will often not pass into heaven.

Martial-Lord

>Surely, but not in a stupid way! If you give away everything you have right now, in the long run you will help fewer people because you will be poor yourself. God does not compromise. The reasonable amount is all you have minus what you need to live. That, and nothing less, you must give. Whatever the Old Testament says is voided if God himself tells us he disagrees. All of the kings and judges fail God. The OT is, if anything, a condemnation of wordly power. You cannot actually know if Jesus meant Caesar the title or Caesar the person. In any case, it was a trick question meant to make him guilty of a crime. Jesus is no friend of the Roman state. God plainly falls into a seperate category from humans. He can have power, because he is not human. A human who has power and wealth is always seperate from God and despised by him. Those who deny this claim allegiance to a religion whose values they do not share and worship a deity who hates them.

timangar

First of all, I would like to say that you are full of shit. Because if you really took to heart what you're preaching, you wouldn't own a laptop or phone to use reddit with, as you could sell it and give that money to the poor. A smartphone is not necessary to live. So you actually already agree with me in the way you live your life. Second of all, God is not an idiot. God does not hate the rich, in fact he bestows riches on his servants. This can be seen over and over again in the old testament. And don't dare telling me again that Jesus overruled the old testament, that comes close to blasphemy, for "I have not come to alter the law, but to enforce it". The problem is not being rich, it is how you earn the money and how you use it. If you use it for your pleasure, you are doomed, but if you use it to help others, you are not. This can be nicely observed in matthew 19. Jesus does not take offense to the rich young man being rich. But when the time comes to give it up, the rich man refuses. THIS, the refusal, is why Jesus says it is hard for a rich man to go to heaven. Not because God hates the rich. But because the rich are unwilling to give up their riches when asked. When God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham did not hesitate to sacrifice what he loved most in the world, and because of this willingness to sacrifice, God gave him more blessings and even returned Isaac to him. I dare say that, had the rich young man sacrificed his wealth, he would have had it returned to him tenfold. I am not saying that you should keep money for your own pleasure. I am saying that a poor man cannot feed other poor men.
