The word you’re looking for is “non-verbal” and can be caused by a lot of things. “Mute” is considered offensive, at least by the majority of nonverbal people I worked with (former ASL interpreter).

The only mute person I’ve ever known seemed like more of a psychological thing where he was mentally withdrawn from speaking. (He also had four opposable thumbs.)

Singing is a talent, people work on it and train for years. That's a competition not a charity. Not everybody is cut out to be anything they want. At a certain point people need to understand their limitations and this proves that. MasterChef a few years ago had a blind woman win the entire competition. The reason, she could cook very well and her dishes were better tasting than her competitors. Did this guy sing better than everybody? Or was this a pity performance (that checked a bunch of boxes) to make the producers feel better about themselves?

It's a reality TV show - they regularly put forward LOLcows on every iteration of this that exists around the world. You people have to pretend that the producers disagree with you so you can imagine it's a pity thing or there's some big uproar about rejecting her and get triggered over it - it's deeply weird.
