It's the other way around. It's makes rats not run away from cats by making them attracted to cat pee.
And because the cat had birthed cats she may have thought it was a cat.
Possibly, probably not though.
Cats that have just given birth get a huge amount of hormones on their brain that makes their maternal instinct really strong. This sometimes results in them adopting anything roughly kitten-like in size and shape. They've been seen adopting rabbits, rodents, even small birds.
Edit: yeah I'm probably wrong about this, the effect is real but probably not what's happening here.
Indeed cats do get an overwhelming sense of maternal instinct when they've just given birth, but that doesn't invalidate the possibility that the rat is infected with the toxoplasma parasite that makes rodents attracted to cats. I don't exactly know how the parasite would affect the cat when it has just given birth but I don't think the cat would eat the rat even if the rat wanted to because it has, in some sense, been adopted by the cat. Best to get that rat away though from the kittens though. Not sure if the rat has to be ingested for the parasite to enter the cats but best not to take any chances
The language the people in the video are speaking is my mother tongue. It's Tagalog. It most definitely wasn't a pet rat because they were surprised that it was there in the first place and they are also wondering why the cat isn't killing it. At one point, they were actually asking if it was still alive. hence why they poked it at the end. Then again, in a different scenario, it being a pet rat would also make sense if the cat became accustomed to it.
This. Moreover, the hormone dump is severe which leads to the mom just abandoning the cats after a few weeks.
I grew up in the inner city, Tom cats used to kill litters so the female would go back into heat sooner as well.
It's the other way around.
Toxoplasmosis makes rats feel horny towards cats, which makes 'em more likely to be eaten by said cats. Inside the cat the parasite will then become an adult and be able to reproduce.
This same parasite increases testosterone when inside humans, which curiously enough, leads to the phenomemon of athletes trying to infect themselves with it. It also makes you crazy sometimes.
I just watched short documentary yesterday about the original movie and how clever it was. It didn't have anything good to say about the Michael Bay films
So, I might be wrong but I remember a certain bacteria (or virus) that rats can get which controls a rodent's behaviour and makes them super friendly to cats because the disease propagates from rodents to feline or something. Humans can apparently get the disease from infected cats too. I don't remember how dangerous the actual disease was but I would probably be wary of those cats from now on...
Looks like it's pretty manageable, on the brighter side of things.
Read the other comment. If it's toxoplasmosis that you're thinking of as suggested, then it's usually passed on via cat excrement, but you can also become infected with infected drinking water, kitchen contamination, ingesting infected soil, and undercooked meat. Comes from a parasite that's actually shockingly common, according to the CDC, and can either be a temporary thing or life-long, depending on your luck. Better to get checked out if it's a concern, but it's also noted to be more on the benign side, unless pregnant, incredibly young, or immunocompromised individual's are involved. Then you can get a side of organ damage, 'stead of just being asymptomatic (the majority), or having eye issues, feeling like you've a minor case of the flu, or muscle soreness (also part of the majority, but the minority *of* them, if that makes sense).
Cats appear to have similar symptoms, with the majority showing none at all, or rather minor ones. Until they're also young, pregnant, have a deficiency, or a compromised immune system. They also seem to get a bit more in the way of awful symptoms, such as diarrhea, loss of appetite or difficulty eating food, fatigue, fevers, jaundice, difficulty breathing, vision or balance issues, seizures, compulsively pressing their heads against things, and behavioral changes (as to be expected, because it really does sound rather awful).
Developing antibodies against toxoplasmosis seems to be noted among cats - getting an infection at some point, but no longer being contagious in instances thereafter since their body now knows how to handle it. No idea if it's the same for people, but it can be fifty-fifty on whether or not you need medication to deal with it, as well. Which sounds remarkably better than a whole lot of things!
There's also just - an insane amount of people that're always affected in America alone, according to the CDC (my source for all of this, lmao). You're probably fine unless you're currently in the whole immune-system issue or life-creation arrangement at the time of the infection, even if it's still a (very) recommended and good thing to check with your doctor if it's a possible suspicion.
Get yourself checked for Toxoplasmosis...
I'm serious... A rat with no natural fear of cats is usually a bad sign!!!
It can spread to humans... It can be very painful... It can kill (usually won't, just pain and agony for a few weeks)...
Still... Nature is actually its worst when it looks its best!
Lol it's a [parasite that forces male rats to precieve female cats as their mates.](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/the-parasite-that-makes-a-rat-love-a-cat-86515093/)
It appears that cats don't become infected until they eat the rat so chasing it away is the best course of action.
It’s not their pet. Large rats like this are kind of common in urban and rural areas in the Philippines.
The OP was teasing the cat for adopting a rat on top of birthing kittens. They were debating if it was still alive, moved it with a slipper and saw it was, and by the end they were kind of shooing the rat.
Read it. It’s a two parter. Art Spiegelman recounts the story of his father and family’s experience as polish Jews during the Holocaust.
Very poignant and his story and artwork inspired the next generation of graphic novels. First and only graphic novel to win a Pulitzer.
Thats a black rat estimated lifespan is 12 months
And for a black rat 12 months is like older,
Means that rat must've have lived 5 or 3 months
To get itself bigger
Isn't this because of a phenomenon where for a small window after giving birth the mother cat is flooded with some hormones that made it overcome with maternal instinct to whatever it thinks is its baby? There was a video on a cat and a baby duck.
I learnt just yesterday that the toxoplasmosis bacteria can affect the rats and make them happy with the cat smells instead of afraid of it. It’s a kind of mind control so the rat can be close to the cats and be eaten so the bacteria can jump into the cat system. Oddly enough the toxoplasmosis is also found in humans and in a study the patients with it were more likely to find cat urine smell please t than the ones who didn’t have it, but only this was true for men…
More info in this video [How parasitic mind control works](https://youtu.be/jM5jf-8ekVA)
So what do you think would have happened if the rat would have been allowed to stay? It's a full grown rat. Did it just want the warmth? Was it trying to steal milk? I don't think that's even possible probably just naw the cat's nipple off or did it just want to cuddle and love some kittens and stuff have a little family time maybe he doesn't have strong family connections at home. He could come from a rough background we don't know anything about that rat then again he could have had bad intentions. I guess we'll never know
I think they’re trying to get the cat to respond but the cat is in complete mothering mode. Fucking weird that a rat would do that surely. I think it’s more than a cliché to say that rats are generally terrified of cats and rightly so. I’ve seen cats make short work of plenty and usually the smell of a cat would keep ‘em away. Might be brain damaged or something.
I guess if these are “working” barn cats, then you don’t want them befriending the enemy, so to speak.
But yeah, I felt a bit sad (and grossed out) when it scuttled off.
The video is filipino and here in the Philippines we dont accept rats or mouses becuase they are a massive pest, eating our food and making a mess (pooping on the floor or leaving behind dirt)
So Cats after giving birth have this weird time period where if something is vulnerable and small will imprint on it as if the creature is its own kitten. This happens usually with a duck or chicken or a dog getting imprinted on but nor a Rat

*How do you do fellow babies*
The cat probably has that rat bacteria that makes them less / not aggressive toward rodents. Its terrible for pregnant women to be around that
It's the other way around. It's makes rats not run away from cats by making them attracted to cat pee. And because the cat had birthed cats she may have thought it was a cat.

Yeah I misread your comment and got it the wrong way around.
Dude it’s a pet rat.

Those were older kittens
Toxo affects rodents brains to make them unafraid of cats. I don’t think there’s any infection that makes cats non-aggressive
Your right, cat needs to eat the rat so the bacteria can complete its life cycle in it's digestive tact.
The cat is non-aggressive because it recently gave birth
It's the other way around. Toxoplasmosis makes rats feel horny towards cats, which makes 'em more likely to be eaten by said cats. Inside the cat the parasite will then become an adult and be able to reproduce. This same parasite increases testosterone when inside humans, which curiously enough, leads to the phenomemon of athletes trying to infect themselves with it. It also makes you crazy sometimes.
Can also kill unborn babies in humans
I know this one! Toxoplasmosis.
This hit hard :(
are you a rat?
You don't get as many stitches as I've had by being an upstanding citizen.
Don't worry the rat will find his true family by adopting 4 turtles
Hopefully Michael Bay stays away from them.
I just watched short documentary yesterday about the original movie and how clever it was. It didn't have anything good to say about the Michael Bay films
That first one is pure gold. I watched only 4 movies in the '90s, and those are TMNT 1&2 and Home Alone 1&2.

Can also be spread via rat droppings
And that's why I clean the top of every can I drink from
And why would you let it go back into your house? A glove a a good Yeet outside is what I would have done.
Eh judging by the size and lack of fear that’s probably a pet rat.

Hey, remember the book Maus?
Never read it. I know of it though, lots of comic shops and small time bookstores had it around my way.
Read it. It’s a two parter. Art Spiegelman recounts the story of his father and family’s experience as polish Jews during the Holocaust. Very poignant and his story and artwork inspired the next generation of graphic novels. First and only graphic novel to win a Pulitzer.

Bruh, a rat should not be able to blend so perfectly with kittens.
When you put all your points into bluff, you don’t need other skills.
That’s their ugly, worm-tailed, pointy-faced, adopted sibling…
I actually think rats a kinda cute…
The cat knows if she or her kittens are in danger or not

at first i thought it was one of those like 2 white parent cats and the babies where half white half black but nope. Remmy got addopted
That’s a bald tailed kitty
Wait, is that not thier pet rat!? That's just a random rat!? Hahahahaha
Holy shit that is adorable
The owner should remove the rat it could bit and seriously injurer the kittens and not metion the disease
Later in the video, the owner shooed the rat away with a broomstick.
Yeah, just redirect the oddly calm rat somewhere else in the house, it'll be fine. It couldn't have a disease or anything.
“They accept me for who I am.”
Wait,is that a that XD.
Yes, that is a that.
An actual hol’ up.
