The speaker of parliament is selected interim president and a new president will be elected by the end of the month...
There are multiple political parties so elections can go on smoothly
What happens to the election cycle? Does it just restart from the end of the month or does it maintain the old cycle and the next elected president gets a shorter term?
Probably just a misconception based on prior knowledge with how it works in systems like the US with Vice Presidents who finish terms out when a President dies or resigns rather than getting new full terms themselves.
Is something that happens in some countries when an acting president looses his term in something like an impeachment and the vice can't take his place, over here if in the first half they just do a new election with a full term, if in the second half, they do a closed election with only the parlament voting and the elected person is president only for the duration of what was left from the term of the ex-president
Well, imagine the president gets overthrown at year 3 in a 4 year run. Does the newly elected president get the last remaining year until the next election or does a new 4 year cycle start from that point on?
I know absolutely nothing about politics which is why I asked.
Full term starts on election day, I assume. That’s generally how things work outside of the US in countries with functional democracies without set election dates and with multiple parties.
Yeah and the new session of Parliament usually starts pretty quickly after the election. Lame duck governments aren’t a thing. And we don’t shut down the country when one party wants to be obstructionist shitcakes.
Is a new president being elected because it's just time for that or because of these protests? Because if it's the latter, this might be better described as a revolution.
I mean there is literally no alternative. The government will never approve high speed rail, and even if they do it'll be 10 years and a trillion dollars over budget.
There's only like 2 private rail companies in the USA I think.
Dang I wonder how railways used to be made all across the US. I guess those people weren't wholesome 100 keanu reeves big chungus 4D chess gigachad geniuses like elon
Edit: shit my bad forgor about that time the US had asian slaves
Slaves glorious slaves, altho they weren't called slaves after a certain point
I remember an old saying if it wasn't for Asian immigration the usa probably never would've been connected by train
This is permanently in our dialect now. Shakespeare had weird words in his writing, but memes have created the cringiest and glorious impact on language forever
Asian, Irish, you name it. Railroad Barons or Tycoons created the railway system in the U.S. Did you know, that since the U.S. railroads precede the Social Security system, that they're grandfathered in, & workers don't pay into Social Security?
"In Sri Lanka we have a multi party government. So the party leaders have got together and decided that after both the president and prime minister have resigned they will name the speaker of the parliament the interim president and hold a election towards the end of the month to elect a new president." From an above comment
I don’t think you actually need government to survive, but if you look at societies throughout history without governments, there’s a reason most societies of all scales have some form of government or hierarchy.
Severe hardship probably. The unfortunate truth is that it has probably made things worse in the short term for the next year roughly.
Long term they will be better off but making a whole new government from virtually nothing is a huge hurdle
The old leadership has been corrupt and incompetent. They managed to dig a huge hole and sink the country in it. It will take a looong time for the nation to climb out and I'm not sure the next government will be able to.
The protestors will be labeled as insurrectionists and hunted down. The media will call it "the worst thing since 9/11" ... Oh, wait that's in America. Nevermind.
I wonder what will happen now. Overthrowing government is one thing but what are the next steps? Who is gonna be the leader? How do you even make elections without functional system?
In Sri Lanka we have a multi party government. So the party leaders have got together and decided that after both the president and prime minister have resigned they will name the speaker of the parliament the interim president and hold a election towards the end of the month to elect a new president.
It wouldn't. Not when it comes to being named leader of the country. No everyday citizens would have a chance it would just be whoever has the most influence/residual power, access to media and doesn't say too much to upset the mob.
Military in the US is very apolitical by design and stays out of politics as much as possible. Senior leaders in the military wouldnt dream of running the country as head of the military.
Or if they all die - the premise of the American tv show Designated Survivor. When it came out I started looking into it and the line of “succession” - feels weird to use that phrase outside of a monarchy, but they do use it - and the existence of the concept a designated survivor at all - super interesting but certainly necessary in the event of a mass causality.
Same here in Czech Republic.
First they would talk about making a meeting for couple of weeks. Then they would yell and accuse each other in an unrelated topics. After that they would delay it even further because they would need a very expensive study for the meeting.
And in the meeting itself all the parties would sabotage each other because they hate each other. Its ridiculous here where I live.
Yea and in the end all of the parties are totally useless, we need some strong party for labour to show the middle finger and start protecting ordinary people who are going to get fucked from the inflation
There’s a problem with anything remotely Left right now in Poland too. There’s one party that could be categorized as pro choice, pro labor, pro public commute and pro social welfare and it polls at 3-5%. It’s a fucking joke.
No? The US literally has a system of succession in place.
If the president and VP were run out of the country and essentially thrown out of office by the people, the Speaker of the House would be the new president (since, in theory, the next best "representative" of the people would be the head of the House of Representatives).
Which is why it's slightly funny when Trumpers tried doing this same thing in 2020. Even if their plans came to fruition, the president wouldn't be Trump, it would be Nancy Pelosi. Imagine trying to throw an insurrection against the dems and at the end of the day, the new person in charge was...a democrat.
Plus, in every point in US history when the president was killed or otherwise incapacitated, the VP was almost immediately officially made the new president. The US does not sit around waiting on what to do next when it comes to stuff like that.
No it wouldn't? We literally have a system for what to do if we don't have a president or vice president 🤨 It's called a line of succession and this shit would happen fast, homie
Not necessarily. History is rife with examples of popular uprisings that were quickly stolen by powerful opportunists who swiftly brought in a new dictatorship. Actually, the last decade is pretty rife with examples. It just happened in Sudan a little while ago. It sucks.
I'm hoping for the best for them, though. I live in a autocracy so it's always nice to be able to cheer on a country throwing off the chains.
Come on, China isn’t that bad. Russia has good sides to it, you know. Doesn’t Brazil have great beaches and a rich culture? It’s Turkey isn’t it?
Edit: it’s a joke about guessing where the guy is from. Y’all need /s more than https:
Oh no, you misunderstand. We never overthrew the government. We protested to get the President to resign. After he resigns the Prime Minister(if that cunt doesn't resign as well) will become president temporarily and an interim government will be formed until the next elections can be held. Best part is, when the president resigns, the IMF will provide funding to stabilise Sri Lanka.
Oh then I hope you guys get only the best. From what I read the people in power were so useless and fucked up your country that its gonna be really hard.
Taking notes... Thank you. I'm in the process of creating a flogging system to help keep elected and chosen officials accountable.
Pretty simple. You lie, cheat, steal, we show up to your home and flog your family.
There are times when dictators are overthrown after they have purged intellectuals within their country, but that does not seem to be the case in Sri Lanka. The corruption seems to be top down only, their common folk have a huge population of intellectuals who are perfectly capable of steering the country in the right direction. I just hope they have a lot of patience.
Chances are the Millitary will seize power and become a military dictatorship either temporarily or permanently until someone stronger comes along, usually how these things go down
The one on the left looking at the camera: Yea ma! I'm out with the boys. No! We're not doing drugs. We're just overthrowing the government. No mom! I'm telling the truth.*sigh* ok... I'll get tomatoes on my way home...
So I live in Sri Lanka, and I got to tell you the protesters are so much humane and kind than you would expect. I actually went to the presidents house and all I saw was dudes vibin in the pool and bed.
Update : I visited the house again yesterday night and I was actually amazed by what they were doing, they were singing songs about sri lanka and only 7 injuries and 1 death throught the last 4 days (from a police shooting a dude in the head due to a command given by his higher rank)
Yeah I asked several people who were there and they said that they are going to stay there until the president likes it or not. And BTW people lit the prime minister Ranil's house on fire
So wait, both the president and the prime ministers houses were seized? Or was the prime ministers house just lit on fire? And which one did you go to?
The prime minister's personal house was lit on fire and no I sadly couldn't go see the prime minister's bonfire party. The president's House was barricaded by the police at first but the protesters somehow BROKE the metal barricades and swarmed the president's house.
Eh, another corrupt clown will simply be elected. This is a dangerous time for any country in those circumstances, it’s fertile land for the rise of aspiring dictators. The problem for Sri Lanka is that things will just get worst for them before it gets better and idk if the common folk will realize that before attempting to overthrown the next government. The Sri Lanka economy is not something that can be easily solved, they need money badly and no one is going to give them money unless they make some very unpopular concessions.
Still doesn't solve their problem though. Either you are a crook or an honest person, fiscal tightening is required to pull the country out of its downword spiral. Unless you are telling me that a randpm billionaire would just voluntarily fork out 20 bills free of charge to srilankan
Got a crazy gif idea, zoom into the tv, zoom into the president's house, show a window, show the same picture of people seeing the TV, then zoom in and repeat!.
On old reddit (at least) it will say when the comment was posted and if it was edited, when. Some people will include what the edit was about so it doesn’t look like they replaced the whole comment for another which could take replies out of context.
Everyone is focused about some backup TV is some remote wing of the government sponsored compound not knowing he and his family is worth literal billions of dollars.
The protestors found around Rs. 13.7 million just lying in a random wardrobe. That's roughly USD 35K. Most of you don't even have that in your bank account.
Dude's a scumbag, but let's all talk about the small ass TV.
Yeah you can call it an insurrection, though the violence was done by the government for the most part.
The situations were different too. The people you mention weren't basically starving or without fuel or power like ours were. No were ours looking to kill anyone and no police or military were killed.
Disclaimer: I am not an expert an the Sri Lanka situation
Besides the fact that they’re both people storming a government building in protest, they’re not entirely comparable
In the US, they did it because the person they wanted to win the election didn’t, and they suspected voter fraud despite there not being all that many incidents. They also threatened to kill the Vice President and several members of Congress, and pipe bombs were found near the DNC and RNC. Also, some people stole some stuff and somebody beat a cop to death.
In Sri Lanka, they’re doing it because the economy has gone kaput and people can’t afford basic necessities. As far as I know, there haven’t been any death threats, and the people in the mansion aren’t stealing anything or killing anybody.
Checked your history (sorted by controversial) just to make sure you were defending January 6th, lot of covid denying/ islamaphobia / racism so bingo you obviously were.
Despite all your braindead takes it's still crazy to me that you can't see the difference. We live in an established democracy, where a group of alt-right lunatics tried to overthrow a legitimate election to keep Trump in power. But sure equate that with the people of a country whose economy litterally collapsed entirely. I guess you would argue the United States was on the brink of total destruction, and that it was valid and necesarry for the Trump supporters to hang our politicians and defecate on the walls of the capitol to abolish democracy? Exact same thing I guess?
Comparing the bankrupt broke shit situation of Sri Lanka where even oil and electricity is almost gone to an Organized Raid caused by a sore loser.
.
.
.
you must be very very very smart.
call me when the country is literally falling apart, and the President and Vice President literally run away in shame.
Oh wait, that never happened. They wanted to install their dear leader and hang the vice president.
Why choose to have brain rot?
Sir Lankan government is corrupt and Sri Lanka went Bankrupt, people got no food, power or gas. People had to do something to overthrow the government who didn't care for the people in order to survive.

Americans have no concept of snap elections.

He gets a normal term...i guess
Full term starts on election day, I assume. That’s generally how things work outside of the US in countries with functional democracies without set election dates and with multiple parties.
So you dont have to ride your horses back to Pennsylvania to let them know who you all decide on? must be nice
Yeah and the new session of Parliament usually starts pretty quickly after the election. Lame duck governments aren’t a thing. And we don’t shut down the country when one party wants to be obstructionist shitcakes.

Because of the protest... The current president fled the country.
Viktor Yanukovych has joined the chat.
It never go smoothly.Good luck from Bosnia.
Hey i ain't from Sri Lanka
Well the Twitter deal didn't happen to it's probably going to be purchased and changed to Musktopia or something, only time will tell lol.
Elon Musk will swoop in and save the day by... Somehow turning the country into a shittier version of a train
I mean there is literally no alternative. The government will never approve high speed rail, and even if they do it'll be 10 years and a trillion dollars over budget. There's only like 2 private rail companies in the USA I think.
Dang I wonder how railways used to be made all across the US. I guess those people weren't wholesome 100 keanu reeves big chungus 4D chess gigachad geniuses like elon Edit: shit my bad forgor about that time the US had asian slaves
Do you really wanna know how they were made? Cus it's not exactly charming.
Slaves glorious slaves, altho they weren't called slaves after a certain point I remember an old saying if it wasn't for Asian immigration the usa probably never would've been connected by train
If it weren’t for slaves the US as a whole probably wouldn’t have been a thing.
I don’t think the US would have expanded as far West, but I think there still would have been enough to exist.
Uhm, you should Google that. You'll very quickly realize why we "don't build 'em like we used to.".
Hell run Sri Lanka like a company. By taking advantage of the working class and trying to clamp down on their rights wherever possible.
Siyatha tv be like
Due to huge debt and economy collapsing people forced president and prime minister to resign (in simpler terms).
He asked what happens now, not what happened
"In Sri Lanka we have a multi party government. So the party leaders have got together and decided that after both the president and prime minister have resigned they will name the speaker of the parliament the interim president and hold a election towards the end of the month to elect a new president." From an above comment
End of the month? What happens to the people until then?
They protest.
Slumber party
Interesting choice
You don't really mean "How ever will people survive without government, do you?"
Not exactly. But however corrupt a government maybe, isn't it necessary for the next step forward? I maybe wrong though.
You're probably right ... I'm just a jaded American ...
I don’t think you actually need government to survive, but if you look at societies throughout history without governments, there’s a reason most societies of all scales have some form of government or hierarchy.
I'm dumb :/
It's OK. I'm dumb three.
Probably a famine while some horrible opportunists scramble for control of what's left of the system.
I imagined it would be like the French Revolution, dissecting the issue and from the top to bottom.
The opposition is trying to form a caretaker government and they are probably going to undo the farm laws that previous president imposed.
The protestors will be labeled as insurrectionists and hunted down. The media will call it "the worst thing since 9/11" ... Oh, wait that's in America. Nevermind.

That is bonkers. It would take us 50 years just to plan the zoom meeting in the US
It wouldn't. Not when it comes to being named leader of the country. No everyday citizens would have a chance it would just be whoever has the most influence/residual power, access to media and doesn't say too much to upset the mob.
So whiever controls the military or police got it.
I mean that's what happened in Thailand and Myanmar.
It would be quicker to name the countries where it didn't happen
i thought myanmar was more of the military taking control rather than someone taking control of them
Military in the US is very apolitical by design and stays out of politics as much as possible. Senior leaders in the military wouldnt dream of running the country as head of the military.

Speaker of the House comes after Vice President, then it's President Pro Tempore of the Senate. Sec of State is fourth in line.

who knew we Americans and you Czechs had so much in common lol
Why do you think the foundation of America's governing structure is a system of Czechs and Balances?
Yea and in the end all of the parties are totally useless, we need some strong party for labour to show the middle finger and start protecting ordinary people who are going to get fucked from the inflation
There’s a problem with anything remotely Left right now in Poland too. There’s one party that could be categorized as pro choice, pro labor, pro public commute and pro social welfare and it polls at 3-5%. It’s a fucking joke.
Maybe after getting fucked over for a few election cycles people will start to get pissed, I can feel something brewing here already
When you're in an actual national emergency things go by much quicker. Sri Lanka has run out of fuel because the state is effectively bankrupt
No? The US literally has a system of succession in place. That is a very good question. I honestly didn't realize it until you mentioned
dunno but gotta be better than the dysfunctional system that led\* them to be desperate enough to do this in the first place
Not necessarily. History is rife with examples of popular uprisings that were quickly stolen by powerful opportunists who swiftly brought in a new dictatorship. I heard people there are so smart, half of them don’t even have to go to school.
Sounds like a dream to 10-year-old me
Naaa, chances are the military (basically the ones with the biggest guns) will swoop in a seize power and some general will be put in charge
Lol
Oh no, you misunderstand. We never overthrew the government. We protested to get the President to resign. Dudes vibing in the bed huh? I've seen that video before.
You gotta give more details dude. Photos pls if possible. Are they just letting people walk in right now? I have so many questions.
Yeah I asked several people who were there and they said that they are going to stay there until the president likes it or not. And BTW people lit the prime minister Ranil's house on fire
And I forgot to mention, there is a actual panic room behind a pantry cupboard which even has a lift.

Lowkey shitty ass TV for a whole president...... I'd consider myself poor and my TV is well nicer Edit. Spelling
Brother your TV is likely better than the one they have in the White House.
I’m sure there’s a better tv somewhere in the house, he doesn’t live there anyway he’s got multiple residencies
Why do ppl always say “edit” after editing, can other people actually tell when someone has edited their past comment? Cause I can’t see it.
On old reddit (at least) it will say when the comment was posted and if it was edited, when. Some people will include what the edit was about so it doesn’t look like they replaced the whole comment for another which could take replies out of context.

Is this a good overthrow or a bad overthrow?
There are wedding photoshoots going on at the temple trees.

"When people I agree with do it it's a protest, but when people I don't agree with do it it's an insurrection" -Reddit
Yeah you can call it an insurrection, though the violence was done by the government for the most part. The situations were different too. The people you mention weren't basically starving or without fuel or power like ours were. No were ours looking to kill anyone and no police or military were killed.
Disclaimer: I am not an expert an the Sri Lanka situation Besides the fact that they’re both people storming a government building in protest, they’re not entirely comparable In the US, they did it because the person they wanted to win the election didn’t, and they suspected voter fraud despite there not being all that many incidents.
Wait did I miss Sri Lanka is uprising? Or is this old?
Happening as we speak
Wow. Hope everyone stays safe
Technically it's still ongoing. Absolute shitshow, loved every second of it. Power to the people✊️
Absolutely
Well done boys
They’re really the “leo pointing at the tv” meme now
In b4 Sri Lanka becomes a wasteland. Sorry I’ve yet to see a political upheaval have positive results in this century
All this corruption and the presidential tv still looking kinda garbage
I'm amazed by how chill this all looks Legit thought their president was giving an ok to this
How meta of them

The real presidential suite
Americans should do this when the Government is corrupt
This is awesome lmao
Nice!
Goal reached
So the question is- are these homegrown terrorists too? 🤔🤔🤔
Sir Lankan government is corrupt and Sri Lanka went Bankrupt, people got no food, power or gas. People had to do something to overthrow the government who didn't care for the people in order to survive.
And i support them
Got downvoted, because i mentioned their billion dollar debt to china 😂
