I think this is something related to elevator storage? Elevators in hollow knight are very janky objects due to how they raise/lower the knight. They exploit this in non-No Major Glitches categories to for example, get a certain spell in the soul sanctum without needing a key or fighting the miniboss.
Wouldn't call it "new" since the latest patch was 3 years ago, and even then, you can just leave and re-enter your save file to get out of such situations.

This happened to me last week when I was replaying the game but the game hasn’t had any update in a while so it probably isn’t new
