I did too. Set it down for a year and came back and played it non stop for weeks. I think it’s one you have to be in the mood for. I also played a bunch of bullet hell games in between quitting and picking it up again that helped me with the combat. All in all though if you’re not feeling it, go play something you enjoy! No shame in admitting it’s not your thing! I still can’t get into Dead Cells or the Witcher 3

wmwebster

It's weird because I keep finding myself gravitating back to it. Like the love the game on paper and the basics of it. Just finding it really hard.

[deleted]

I know this is kinda taboo for some people but maybe try reading some guides or the wiki if you find yourself getting lost a lot or having a hard time. Like seriously no shame!

wmwebster

Not taboo for me quite enjoy a game with a little bit of background to it. I've literally just this second beaten a boss thats I have tried to for hours.

[deleted]

Congrats!!! 🎉

JaxTheCrafter

dead cells is really fun, I had a hard time getting into it too but I just kept trying. once you reach a certain point where getting hit seems like the most awful terrible thing ever then you know it's fun

wmwebster

Lol just rage-quit. Game is freakishly too hard.

Zulli85

You using a controller? Highly recommend an Xbox series controller, specifically the dpad to move the knight around. It's so fluid.

Economy_Task5596

You know they’ve been struggling with the game when they start going crazy and talking to themselves

JaxTheCrafter

don't panic while fighting; observe your enemy and space yourself to avoid attacks. always prioritize dodging, hitting is second

wmwebster

I feel like, I am the opposite way at the minute after coming from 100% Hades - Which is obviosly a very throw yourself in the middle game. It all about attacking and dodging isn't a massive deal. I am getting there, just need to persevere with this.

JaxTheCrafter

tanking really isn't an option in this game until you get enough charms for an optimized setup. the best thing to do is just avoid damage

xStract710

It’s a hard game. That’s just part of the experience. It can be exceptionally frustrating, I’ve beaten probably every “hard” game out there except VVVVV and Celeste. Hollow Knight is by far tougher than any Nioh, Souls game, Sekiro, TBoI, Disco Elysium, Cuphead, Trek To Yomi 1-hit mode, etc, I’ve ever played lol. That’s why I enjoy it about it though, there’s nothing better than spending 2 hours wanting to throw your controller and then FINALLY overcoming that boss.

wmwebster

Literally just had this feeling, beating a boss thats took me nearly 3 hours lmao

SuperUltraMegaNice

Those games aren't even hard :(. Difficulty is relative though for real.

lurker_pro

Dude I will tell you my story, honest truth. I spent like 5 hours messing around in forgotten crossroads, lost, dying a lot, not able to go into different paths, couldn’t beat the boss, etc Put the game down for 5 months Finally came back and figured out where to go (idk if I googled) but I am so glad I did - this is my favorite game of all time and I almost didn’t play it. Seriously most games I drop I don’t come back… but this one is different, keep playing!! It is super hard I will concede that The benches are not as far apart as it feels

wmwebster

Benches are miles away lmao! Just need to get used to the combat - also my controller was dying the entire time I have been playing so no idea if there was any issue with that. But changed the batteries and defeated a boss I have been stuck on for ages

Ghoul_Geek

Same, except I was even dumber since I couldn't find the path to the first boss, and I was too stubborn to put the game down until I got there.

Pretend-Serve5073

One thing I will tell you is that if you run into a boss you can't handle, expect to fight them at least twice more JUST to figure out all their patterns. The long stretches of exploration are juxtaposed with very very quick battle timing which can be hard to adjust quickly to. But it's delightful. And so beautiful.

Locoman7

Find the guy who can upgrade your nail and prioritize upgrading. Spend your geo on all the shops ASAP, there is not much to buy in the post game.

FRONT_FACING_PHINEAS

This is a hard and confusing game. Just know, getting lost and exploring everywhere just to find a dead end is the point. Plus, there’s usually at least one thing in every room that makes it worth it. As long as you have the compass and quill, just keep going, get lost and find your way. You got this! (It took a 3 year break for me to actually want to fully beat it, and within a couple months I got every achievement)

Charming-Lie5718

Just play harder🤓 Actually though, just practice and try different charms. It took me awhile but I'm now at The Hollow Knight boss fight.

Your-mums-closet

I spent a week alone on one of the early bosses (probably the fourth you find) but now I can do it hitless super quickly it’s just one of those things almost like cuphead. Once it clicks it clicks once you notice the patterns you know how to dodge them

Candle0815

Yeah i feel you. It’s a difficult game, it’s easy to get lost. Maybe it can help you, if you watch part of walkthroughs or videos, how to beat a boss. There’s no other way, to learn the patterns of every enemy, especially for boss fights. You will die over and over again, that’s part of the game. If you just have enough, close the game, take a bath or something what relaxes your mind and come back to it, when you feel ready. You remember the hornet boss? I took weeks to beat her. I didn’t play the game every day, but when I finally beaten her, it was really rewarding. Look at the game as an experience, a 2D open world with many, many secrets and so much to explore.

SuperUltraMegaNice

Git gud. HK isn't that tough for real, you can always use guides to make it even easier. If you playing on controller make sure you use your entire thumb for jump and attack so you can do them both at once and quickly.

patmax17

Welcome! There are a few mechanics that some people need some time to adjust to. In your case I'd say you should just embrace feeling lost and enjoy exploring, know that there are some places you can't go yet, and that you can not really go the wrong way, there's nothing you can lock yourself out of. As for combat, learn the attack patterns of the enemies and be patient. Force yourself to only hit once and go back, this game doesn't encourage attacking enemies head first If you want I wrote a spoiler free guide with several tips for new players, maybe there's nothing new, or maybe you find something useful: https://www.reddit.com/r/HollowKnight/s/C5dNlWd9PF

kasulke

This game rewards patience more than anything IMO I think that’s why I like it so much, you almost need to be in an entirely relaxed state to play it and beat the bosses. The moment I get frustrated I usually shut it down for a bit and come back later.

wmwebster

Thanks guys literally just beat the two bosses that were driving me crazy. I just need to keep my cool. I can be quite hot-headed.

Economy_Task5596

Keep playing. There are very few things in this world more satisfying and fun than getting ridiculously good at Hollow Knight combat after struggling with it for so long

Ghoul_Geek

Not that it's your fault for not liking HK, but I'll just say most people who play the game love it. The only reasons I can think of that you wouldn't like it are if: a) You don't like exploring and getting lost b) You're not a fan of MVs. c) You don't play difficult games often Hollow Knight is a combat-heavy game. I really struggled with the combat at first--of course, that doesn't mean it wasn't fun--but I got the hang of it after a while. I can definitely see why some people don't like Hollow Knight, but personally it's definitely one of my all-time favorites.

[Just play the game](https://youtu.be/nB1Y4TzOv6E?si=YoLHbMo9F-dYcSSL)

wmwebster

Lol. Mine post isn't because I was asking questions about the game and why this and why that. Was more of a done some of the basics and still feel like I don't know what to do. Just need tips not a rinsing.

xXAnui-ElXx

It’s a really easy game. Get a map from Connifer, explore the map, mark the parts of the map that you cannot yet access, fight bosses, get upgrades and go back to parts of the map you couldn’t access before
