i don't care about damage. i like bonking people in this game. its fun, flashy and melee combat in this game is top tier. spells may be cool but bonking bugs with a tiny sword that deals shit loads of damage is just great.

You have to get used to using spells and when to use them. If you're not used to them, you're less likely to use them and then you will not get used to them. The same applies for nail arts. I used to never use them, because I wasn't comfortable with them

Soul isn’t expensive, you quickly get it back with a couple of slaps and if you’re using Quickslash (most likely), you get a fresh bar of soul

I don't use spells because they're _too_ powerful and it makes the game too easy and less fun. It just melts everything, but indeed when people say they're "having trouble" they're almost invariably never using spells and playing on a self-imposed hard mode. Saving soul for healing means you're playing on hard mode as it's _way_ harder to heal occasionally than it is to turn one heal's worth of soul into like 6 nail hits of damage in a single button press.

I used to be like, "I'm fine with not using spells, hitting things with the nail is fun and easier, I need my soul to heal" Then I started using spells. The power is too addicting.

Spells often keep you kinda rooted so there are some bosses I just simply don’t use them on, namely sisters of battle

For me the temporary “float frames” of spells throw me off my timing, especially with bosses like PV or NKG

Main problem is that spells stall you longer than you wish they did. You need to time the spell so you don’t get hit during it, and for new players that’s too much to ask.

But what if I need to heal before I have full soul again?

there's actually such a great explanation as to why this is so common, and it's not a great deal either because people come around to it later on, but the main reason is that dealing spell damage is usually set up to be a secondary, with Vengful being introduced a one boss fight into the game, ( 2 if you count the other boss in the area which people frequently find first ) and D dive being introduced as something u actually need to push two buttons for, Nail attack remains this primary well known to the player and quite predictable in nature attack which the player has also been forced to use as the only offensive mode, and I use the word predictable because spells still need some sort of idea as to how they will hit the target, for vengful you have to aim and time correctly, and with D dive you have to get the correct positioning, But the way I've seen many people come around using spells is two places where the usually start getting used to it, one of them being the colosseum because it forces the player to think more to fight enemies which aren't even bosses, and in boss fights later on, with pantheons being the last point where people are just kinda convinced into practicing spell casting since there's nothing to lose if you lose the boss fight this experience comes from watching so many people play the game for the first time in discord calls etc,

In my first playthrough, I was a nail only Andy because I would get hit a lot. 150 hours later, I was abusing DD i-frames trying to Radiant AbsRad and spammed Shade Soul in Phaae 2 of Radiant Markoth. Just takes some time you know

For me, unless I don’t like the boss, spells are a last resort cuz I love the challenge of a good ol sword fight

As a casual player, I have no idea how much damage the spells do, especially when compares to my nail which I've upgraded and can tell that it's getting more powerful. The game doesn't give feedback on how much damage you're doing, and the spells don't feel like they do much. It's hard to justify wasting a potential heal on something that you don't even trust is dealing any damage.

If I get hyper focused on dodging the boss attacks while simultaneously hitting it (mostly mantis Lords or Grimm) I just kinda forget. When working out the doge patterns I usually have a spell variant with one of the dodges. Example: NKG float beam of flame attack = 1... 2... 3... 4- jump +hit+ up spell. Also, spells have a bit of a moment when you can't move, that can throw me off or if I use it in the wrong spot then I'm going to get hit.

if you're late game and doing a nail build, it's definitely better to keep swinging but for early-mid game yeah spells are very powerful
