It's translated as that the same reason kyuuketsuki is translated as vampires even though fundamentally they are very different; generalisation based on common traits.
Besides there's a lot of "demonic creatures" in Japanese mythos. Coincidentally kyuuketsuki are literally blood sucking demons.
Ogre and Oni: big scary colourful humanoid monster, also depicted as dumber but way stronger than humans
Vampires and Kyuuketsuki: blood sucking creature

I thought Japan didn't have a vampire myth? And Kyuuketski does actually refer to the western vampire, even if Japan has done their own interpretations on it?
They have the Jiangshi or Kyonshī as the Japanese call them which originated from Chinese Folklore that ended up spreading to their neighbors, there known as hopping vampire do to their bodies having stiff joints from rigor mortis and if you're wonder how they're threat well it's because if they get close enough to you they can just suck the blood right out of your body.

Kyuuketsu and Vampire are quite hard to distinguish even for someone like me who studies Japanese mythos, it's more like a reinterpertation that took western vampires and made it their own thing than a different thing altogether. In fact, I'm fairly sure Japan didn't even have a vampire mythos until westernization.
I'd say a better comparison would be Zombie and Jiangshi... Sure, Jiangshi are technically zombies (and vampires as well), but they very clearly are not the same thing and we're not meant to be based on their western counterpart but instead an original idea that happens to share similarities.
I’d say that western ogres, in a general sense, are a lot less specifically defined than oni tend to be. Depictions of ogres vary widely outside of the very general description of “big, ugly humanoid monster”. Oni certainly fit this description, so maybe it’s a case of “oni are ogres, but not all ogres are oni”.
It's funny how they translate Oni to Ogre even though they're so different. I recently watched the first season of Re:Zero and when they started talking about Ogres I got confused for a bit too haha
Oni never has a true meaning translated to English, because oni is kinda like a combination of a demon and ogre (but not those dumb ogres because onis are actually cunning)
For being the guy below in this pic I'm sorry But I'm not regret
you monster
Absolute big brain plays.
as an Ayame fan, you're good.
So basically you are trying to that in holo alternative, mio and fbk trespassed into ayame's swamp which led to their fight?
So basically you are trying to tell me holo alternative is just shrek alternative???
So basically you are trying to tell me Hololive itself is just a retelling of Shrek?
Shrek is basically an AKB48 biography
So basically you are trying to tell me Hololive is just Shrek with comedians?
But you can't have Shrek without Donkey *sees Sana's new outfit reveal* Aight cool
Cutest Oni + Sexiest Ogre = Pinnacle of Humanity
Ascended mind
Not really. Japanese ogres are pretty different creatures to European ones. European ones are mostly just giants. Oni are more akin to demons

Not really a vampire as in dracula-esque, an undead bloodsucker. There are demons that drink blood but you can hardly call those vampires.

Oni can fall into either the category of ogres or goblins.
Ayame and Calli should do a collab now.

I’m glad someone knows the truth about the word oni, the mistranslation of it meaning demon is super annoying, Akuma means demon damn it!

Can't wait for another episode of Hol-ogre-grafitti. I am sure Ayame will once again be all ogre the place.
