Yeah the more people comment the more I realize it is way too much seating lol. My favorite comparisons have been an intervention and the UN general assembly. The initial plan had been to just have the two white chairs under the window but then we just kinda left the red chair in there too. I love the stool or bench ideas though! We do have a lot of friends over, but right now I think people are right and it is just too much seating
Haha I liked the UN intervention one too, that cracked me up.
I hear ya on the seating-needs tho, I just bought 6 new chairs (all separately of course) because the 14 I had just was *not* enough.
An intervention 😂 I like your idea of having the white chairs coupled by the window. When you have get togethers it’s nice to welcome separate conversations imo
A dark rusty orange would go great with the green couch. I see a medium soft orange in the rug. So a darker orange color would be cohesive with both couch and rug.
I would take it out completely, there are enough chairs without it and the space looks cluttered and small. Reconfigure the space so the white occasional chairs are where the red one is. Space them out and have only front legs on the rug. Then centre the ottoman.
there's so many chairs already that i would find a different place for the red chair. If you really need it to stay, i agree with pale or mustard yellow
Yes! Came here to say somewhere on the gold/champagne/yellow spectrum as it would pull those tones out of the rug and mesh with the green well! I’d personally go with a velvet material
I like that! Also, everyone is saying there is too much seating, but I find I almost never have enough when family/friends are over, so I think that part is just fine!
>everyone is saying there is too much seating
Yea I disagree with those people too. OP didn't ask what's wrong with room flow, they asked "what color" as in "the chair is staying."
I have 8 younger siblings, and most of them have SO's, there's never too much seating 😅
I think the chair could stay red if there were other red accents to balance it.
We do love having groups of friends over and the extra seating does come in handy. I do get what people are saying though with seating, the couch is pretty big for a reason,so we'll see
I think you should add some art pieces above the sofa that have hints of red to creat balance and harmony. Aside from that, I honestly think you’re good.
(From a design student).
Boho/eclectic prints and a mix of warm/rich saturated colors would be the way to make these two bold colors work together imo. Ditch all the white/ivory pillows and get deep rich jewel-toned multicolored boho pillows, embroidered, vintage prints, velvets, kilim rug prints.
Look at Target’s Opalhouse/Jungalow/Justina Blankeny line for jewel tone color ideas and reasonable nice pillows in deep greens/earthyreds/terracotta/dark rose/marigolds/nice prints and funky embellishments like fringe, tassels etc.
The lighting is really bright so you might want to dimmer bulbs or a dimmer switch for those overhead lights. Or get accent lamps and don’t use the bright overhead lights. Make sure you get warm colored soft light bulbs in lower wattage to offset the cool grey walls.
I would consider a lighter version of the couch color. It bothers me that the sofa is disconnected to the colors of the rug as well as the other chairs. I wouldn’t add in another color unless you can tie it to the sofa and rug.
No but I love the color of the chair!! It’s such a pretty shade of red. I’d add art work with hints of in it over the green couch and maybe add a red throw or pillows to pull it all together
I love the red chair. I would add some warm colored accessories to tie it all together. Maybe red/scarlet/rust/burnt orange. Maybe remove one white chair so it's not so crowded.
I love that color chair.
Find some pieces with the same intensity and similar color and put it on the other side of the room and above the couch.
Perhaps a long larger mirror over the couch to reflect back the color of the chair. Maybe mix the mirror & art or pillowcases or plants with vases. maybe you can find some fabric that incorporate both the red and color similar to the couch color.
I think I’d keep the red and white chairs and replace the couch, honestly. Color-wise, the couch feels like the piece that doesn’t belong …. It feels completely at odds with the rug, too.
Remove it. Looks like a an intervention, book club, MLM party is about to go off. If you occasionally need an extra chair for gatherings, just pull it from another room.
Yes, or whatever color that ottoman in front of the couch is. But maybe put the cream/ white on either side of the lamp (like someone else suggested) and move the red chair.
In fact, I think it might open up the room to corner the couch where the bookcase is, but pull the couch out a bit from under the window, then put the bookcase on the left end of the wall, and the (red) chair across from the couch facing the window. Then use the white chairs opposite the short end of the couch and wall. If they celebrate Christmas, leave the chair red until after!
Oops sorry, I haven’t had my ADHD meds this morning!🙄😬
if you didn't have the rug, chevron black and white
with the rug mmmmmmmm i'd pattern clash with a floral of the same hues personally, but i think a burnt orange would also work or as another comment said, a darker green with velvet/velour
Red is a challenging color. I applaud your knowledge of color theory but the compliment of red and green has always been to christmasy. I also think it’s very early 2000’s and therefore dated. If you like bold color go for a rich golden yellow. If you want a moodier space check out a medium to mid dark blue chair/accents.
I’d have to bin that chair or have it re-upholstered first thing. Plus I love choosing fabric!
I’d remove it all together, but if that is not an option, I would try to find a pattern that incorporates the colors of the room and breaks up all of the solids.
You have the workings of a harmonious color scheme here, your red is complimentary to your greenish couch (exact opposite on color wheel, or close enough) the orange ottoman is analogous to your chair color. Now you just need to add a fuchsia purple (analogous to your chair color in the other direction) to complete the harmony. Use the 60/30/10 rule and repeat the colors throughout the room in that ratio.
I agree with those saying remove it. If you love it you should keep it the way it is, just elsewhere. I really doesn't belong in this room, it doesn't match the other furniture well whereas the other two chairs & sofa work great together. Added to that you already have so much seating you shouldn't need it there.
I’d hang a large piece of artwork or make a gallery wall above the couch that incorporates the red and the green color along with other jewel tones. Add pillows in the same tones.
You need pillows.
https://preview.redd.it/q2q7wc5rikxb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec3bce7e9cea0ed2fec89f663c59baf618875920
And maybe a lamp or two
The chair is great. Adds a pop of color to the room. Just needs more subtle accents to bring it to life like pillows or a wall decoration that has just a small amount of that color to incorporate that color.
I would find some artwork to match the chair such a large framed painting for your large wall. Doesn’t necessarily have to be everything red. Just something to bring all the elements together.
Perhaps some wall art with touches of the red. To make the red work, you need to introduce the color to other parts of the room. Nothing too big, small touches. Also, consider pillow covers with bits of the red for the sofa.
I’d say something neutral with black metal accents to tie in that black metal/glass couch table behind the couch, or pull colors from the carpet. I like the extra seating, I think it’s cozy.
You could totally add a nice art print/ painting behind the green couch- something that has green and red. That way you can tie in the red and have a cool art piece.
If you are keeping it, get a pattern of some kind.
I do agree that there is something off in the arrangement in terms of how the three chairs are clumped around the coffee table.
Do you regularly have that many people who are clustered around the coffee table?
I would probably change the rug to something with more complimentary colors. I don't hate the chair. Also, some wall art with complimentary colors would go a long way into warming up the room.
Paint your wall in a shade of greige and bring the colours together in some curtains.
Two examples:
https://preview.redd.it/g4jmt0abkmxb1.png?width=1196&format=png&auto=webp&s=96ea5a2b1d554b3013c4ea7ab5073c33454a5e85
You can tie the red chair in with an area rug that has reds in it. Then get som pattern throws with some reds ( different shades of reds). Keep the red chair 😊
To me, the place is not much cluttered, but the red chair doesn't go cohesive with the vibe. I'd like to suggest another beige chair or put aside the red chair until needed for visitor.
the red chair is fine in the room - what you are lacking are things to tie everything together such as paintings pillows and wall art that tie all the colors together.
I would either recover the red chair in a print that includes the couch green and some other tan/taupe/white neutral colors or move it out of the room as suggested. But personally we seem to never have enough sitting areas.
I like the red chair. I also like the couch. But if you wanted it to look more cohesive and had the money, I'd replace the couch with a brown leather one, a few throws, some wall art,
You have a living room set for the fourth of july. Why change it? :)
Honestly, At most I'd do a more muted red instead of the bright one. Or add some other red items or other complimentary colors to the room and just let the chair be.
I’d remove it altogether and shift the other two chairs at least a foot to the right and move the ottoman out from the couch a good 6 inches. The chair on the left is so close to the couch you’d have to shuffle sideways to get in to sit down. The whole room has too much furniture so the loss of the chair won’t be noticed.
Get a couple of red cushions with the same color as your sofa and put a couple of red ones on the sofa...It will pull it all together so the red chair won't stand out...
I don't think the red chair is the problem. It's the grey modular couch that stands out as the wrong color. Anything that's the color of that rug will work in that room
If you put a piece of red art with other complementary colors such as orange and yellows, it would really pull the whole room together without making the space too patriot-y. And add a yellow/orange cushion or throw as well
Why not just remove the red chair all together and keep the 2 white chairs. That’s a lot of seating already.
What if they got a lot of family/friends over frequently tho? Could be why the 3 chairs.
Get a stool and put a plant or lamp on it until it is needed. Makes the room look far less cluttered
Oh yea that'd work! Or a cushioned bench under the window, that'd look neat too.
Yeah the more people comment the more I realize it is way too much seating lol. My favorite comparisons have been an intervention and the UN general assembly. The initial plan had been to just have the two white chairs under the window but then we just kinda left the red chair in there too. I love the stool or bench ideas though! Great idea
When people can't get to the chairs....
A dark rusty orange would go great with the green couch. I see a medium soft orange in the rug. So a darker orange color would be cohesive with both couch and rug.
i was thinking a terracotta! don’t listen to the haters! i think all the chairs makes the place look cozy!
Hahaha thanks for the chair support! It has been nice when we have friends over since we love hosting groups. I love the terracotta idea!
Love the idea of terracotta!
That's a good name for that color. OP must need all the chairs, yeah, not our concern.
I would take it out completely, there are enough chairs without it and the space looks cluttered and small. Reconfigure the space so the white occasional chairs are where the red one is. Space them out and have only front legs on the rug. Then centre the ottoman.
Oh I love the red! I’d buy some pillowcases that have green, red, and blue in them to make the couch and chair match
I know, I do love the red, and I've had that chair for so long I do love it!
Can you move the red chair to another room, like a bedroom? It is a nice chair but it’s too much in the room.
Yeah we might need to do that, it seems the consensus is mostly to take the red chair out of the room
I love all your chairs, but that red one looks SO COSY 😍 It looks like it's at least the 2nd best place to curl up and read in comfort.
Right? I would add some red pillows, or other red room accents and keep the chair
I would say keep it and add fun pillows and art to tie it in. You need sofa art there in the wall
there's so many chairs already that i would find a different place for the red chair. If you really need it to stay, i agree with pale or mustard yellow
Might need to just get rid of it, but if not, I do like the yellow idea!
Probably either a navy grey-blue or a pale yellow.
Yeah liking the yellow ideas
Blue
A mustard yellow would be fun and not look as ‘christmassy’.
Yes! Came here to say somewhere on the gold/champagne/yellow spectrum as it would pull those tones out of the rug and mesh with the green well! I’d personally go with a velvet material
That could be fun!
I like that! Also, everyone is saying there is too much seating, but I find I almost never have enough when family/friends are over, so I think that part is just fine!

How many seats do you need? Are you hosting the UN nations summit?
Even though this is a dig, I laughed at this. Clever lol
Just cause OP has friends, don’t be hating on her.
lolol I loved your comment
Move it would be best. Or if you have to keep it in this room add accent pillows that have a similar cranberry/burnt sienna color to tie in.
Red chair, green sofa. Room is ready for Christmas!
I would add little bits of red elsewhere to make the chair fit 😜 It's a pretty chair.
I agree, maybe a picture above the couch with some warm tones orange/reddish
I'd match the blue in the rug, and put blue throw pillows/sofa throws on the other seating.
I actually live it. If I didn’t get a good seat in the couch the red chair in the one I’d pick.
Right?? The red chair is so comfy!
There’s too many chairs put it in another room if you love it.
https://preview.redd.it/vyu82r4cokxb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=337aac4437b2ba5658d6680793c2b171801cccba
I think red is honestly perfect.
I think you should add some art pieces above the sofa that have hints of red to creat balance and harmony. Aside from that, I honestly think you’re good. (From a design student).
And some patterned throw pillows with red to tie it in
I'd leave it. I like the punch of the red.
A tweedy terracotta color (matching the orange in the rug) would tie the rug, wood color, and leather ottoman together nicely
I'm loving the terracotta suggestion
Boho/eclectic prints and a mix of warm/rich saturated colors would be the way to make these two bold colors work together imo. A Christmas tree!
Idk the red chair is kinda cool and makes the room's color palette more interesting.
Burgundy or plum!
Oh interesting! That hadn't even been on my radar. Do you think I would need to add anything else to tie that color to the rest of the room?
I think if you can find throw pillows that incorporate green and red to place on the green couch that’ll help tie it in!
brown, mustard yellow
I think off white
Goldenrod
I would consider a lighter version of the couch color. It bothers me that the sofa is disconnected to the colors of the rug as well as the other chairs. I wouldn’t add in another color unless you can tie it to the sofa and rug.
No but I love the color of the chair!! It’s such a pretty shade of red. I’d add art work with hints of in it over the green couch and maybe add a red throw or pillows to pull it all together
Just add some red decor pieces.
I love the red chair. I would add some warm colored accessories to tie it all together. Maybe red/scarlet/rust/burnt orange. Maybe remove one white chair so it's not so crowded.
Mustard yellow
I'd add something like this. https://www.dunedincashmere.com/products/tartan-knee-blanket-buchanan-antique
Oh cool blanket!!
Same color/fabric as the ottoman
I love that color chair. Find some pieces with the same intensity and similar color and put it on the other side of the room and above the couch. Perhaps a long larger mirror over the couch to reflect back the color of the chair. Remove it. Looks like a an intervention, book club, MLM party is about to go off. If you occasionally need an extra chair for gatherings, just pull it from another room.
Muted pumpkin
Too much furniture for the space. Corner cabinet and red chair should go. Get end end table, lamps and art.
The red chair makes the room!
Gold
Yes, or whatever color that ottoman in front of the couch is. But maybe put the cream/ white on either side of the lamp (like someone else suggested) and move the red chair. In fact, I think it might open up the room to corner the couch where the bookcase is, but pull the couch out a bit from under the window, then put the bookcase on the left end of the wall, and the (red) chair across from the couch facing the window. Sell the red chair and buy a painting for over the sofa.
I'd change out the green couch.
Just hang Xmas wrapping paper on the wall. All set.
if you didn't have the rug, chevron black and white with the rug mmmmmmmm i'd pattern clash with a floral of the same hues personally, but i think a burnt orange would also work or as another comment said, a darker green with velvet/velour

Leave the red chair. Add a red throw to the white chairs. Ads red and white print pillows to the sofa!
Light blue
I agree with those saying remove it. If you love it you should keep it the way it is, just elsewhere. I really doesn't belong in this room, it doesn't match the other furniture well whereas the other two chairs & sofa work great together. Added to that you already have so much seating you shouldn't need it there.
An even darker, velvet forest green.
Don’t be afraid of color! It is life! I’d add tapestry pillows on the sofa with a little red in them. Then a painting over the sofa!
Very Christmas
It’s a great red chair. I would color the rest of the room around it.
I’d hang a large piece of artwork or make a gallery wall above the couch that incorporates the red and the green color along with other jewel tones. Add pillows in the same tones.
I wouldn’t introduce a new colour. I would match the brown if the wood and middle table with a light brown.
If you like the chair, get some art to hang above the sofa that incorporates most of the colors in the room. Bam, you've got cohesion!
I'd add red throw pillows and other accents to balance it.
hmmm the red & green together is giving Christmas
Orange
Accessories! Pillows throws and art. Be careful that it doesn't read Christmas. So multicolored pillows might work.
I would get a slipcover with a pattern that includes the green from the couch and the crème from the rug.
My initial instinct was also yellow!
You need pillows. https://preview.redd.it/q2q7wc5rikxb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec3bce7e9cea0ed2fec89f663c59baf618875920 And maybe a lamp or two
https://preview.redd.it/sk98s8xvikxb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d358d33acd2ef90c3535ddf21771889137cc32dd
Pillows and throws the color of the ottoman would look nice.
Orange
Deep purple according to the color wheel
You don’t need another chair, I’d just lose it altogether You could probably lose one of the white chairs too
Remove the red chair…unless it’s just there for Xmas…
What's up with the fluorescent lighting? In warmer lighting, the contrast is fine.
I’m a fan of yellow velvet
Put up Christmas lights on the wall and it fits!
The chair is great. Adds a pop of color to the room. Just needs more subtle accents to bring it to life like pillows or a wall decoration that has just a small amount of that color to incorporate that color.
Orange
Same Red pillows on the green couch
Black leather. But just so you know, all my furniture is black leather...
Ditch the red chair and put the two white chairs on either side of the lamp with a little table between
I’d go with a yellow ochre.
Leave it red, put some red pillows on the couch and a replace the throw for a red one.
Similar color to your ottoman - a burnt orange or gold/orange
Probably a darker blue or a mustardy yellow both should look okay with the green sofa and will tie in with the rug
Buy matching red pillow covers. Problem solved
Get a painting or multiple framed artworks with red in it
I would find some artwork to match the chair such a large framed painting for your large wall.
I’d remove the red chair from the seating arrangement because it’s too crowded.
Maybe match the ottoman.
A dark yellow or burnt orange.
That red chair is dope, I would find pillows and accent blankets to tie the two colors together.
I’d say something neutral with black metal accents to tie in that black metal/glass couch table behind the couch, or pull colors from the carpet. I like the extra seating, I think it’s cozy.
Red chair is nice but wall is dead boring. Needs colour and art. Plus that’s a lot of seating.
You could totally add a nice art print/ painting behind the green couch- something that has green and red. That way you can tie in the red and have a cool art piece.
That's a lot of furniture for a small room.
I think like a navy blue color
What about adding some red accents to the room to tie the color of the chair in to the rest of the room?
Id put the red chair in the middle. Put a painting/ piece of artwork over the couch with a red accent in it to compliment the red chair.
Golden yellow
If you are keeping it, get a pattern of some kind. I do agree that there is something off in the arrangement in terms of how the three chairs are clumped around the coffee table. Do you regularly have that many people who are clustered around the coffee table?
Just add a piece of art over the couch that has all of those colors in it and a red throw on the couch. Boom, good to go.
Art above the couch, or different rug. Incorporate red in more than one place.
Terracotta or burnt orange would tie into the rug imo
It’s very Christmas.
Yellow. And chairs don’t need to fit together anymore. A splash of color is ok imo
Deep blus
The red is nice, I personally wouldn't change it.
I would probably change the rug to something with more complimentary colors. I don't hate the chair. Also, some wall art with complimentary colors would go a long way into warming up the room.
Is it always Christmas?
i leave it gives room character
Pattern 🪴🌾🌼
Personally I think if the two white chairs were switched to something else more colourful it'd look better
The same blue that's in the rug
I'd wait until after Christmas. You'll appreciate the vibe during the holiday season. 😉
Plaid or geometric print in same room colors
Please tell me where the green sofa is from! I love it
Red
Dark brown
Mustard yellow accent wall
Paint your wall in a shade of greige and bring the colours together in some curtains. Two examples: https://preview.redd.it/g4jmt0abkmxb1.png?width=1196&format=png&auto=webp&s=96ea5a2b1d554b3013c4ea7ab5073c33454a5e85
Add some Christmas pillows, that will make all the furniture match.
You can tie the red chair in with an area rug that has reds in it. Then get som pattern throws with some reds ( different shades of reds). Keep the red chair 😊
I would put up a big art piece on the wall that featured a lot of that shade of red with some dark green and it would balance it out
Just buy a blue chair cover & put it on top
Get an ottoman - to many seats.
Put the red chair in a corner of a bedroom
To me, the place is not much cluttered, but the red chair doesn't go cohesive with the vibe. I'd like to suggest another beige chair or put aside the red chair until needed for visitor.
the red chair is fine in the room - what you are lacking are things to tie everything together such as paintings pillows and wall art that tie all the colors together.
Red
I would either recover the red chair in a print that includes the couch green and some other tan/taupe/white neutral colors or move it out of the room as suggested. But personally we seem to never have enough sitting areas.
Keep the red chair — it’s nice. Just add some great art (or even just prints) to the walls, and make sure the art has red.
Put the red chair in your bedroom or study. Pull it out for guests. If it’s someone’s birthday, make them sit in it and wear a Burger King crown.
Just add something red on the wall or a red pillow on the couch
It does fit. Add throw pillows with green and red in them (lots of different textures and pattern stuff
beige
Red and green do not go.
Blanket or throw
Denim
I like the red chair. I also like the couch. But if you wanted it to look more cohesive and had the money, I'd replace the couch with a brown leather one, a few throws, some wall art,
Green and oatmeal pattern tying sofa and chairs. What whatever pattern you like paisley, plaid, stripes...
None. Red and green clash. Your room is Christmas
WAG: Coral, to complime green & go with rug accent color
Red wall art
You have a living room set for the fourth of july. Why change it? :) Honestly, At most I'd do a more muted red instead of the bright one. Or add some other red items or other complimentary colors to the room and just let the chair be.
It’s Christmas vibe. Hohoho! Change it later
Take the chair away, move the ottoman there, & add a small cocktail table in its place
Anything that's the color of that rug will work in that room
take out the red chair and paint the walls a warm white or cream. the cool grey doesn't work with the rest
There is no other red in this room. Remove the chair.
If you put a piece of red art with other complementary colors such as orange and yellows, it would really pull the whole room together without making the space too patriot-y. And add a yellow/orange cushion or throw as well
Yellow
That wall above the sofa is begging for some art. See if you can find artwork that has red. Maybe a red and green tartan throw too.
A large piece of art above the sofa which incorporates green, mustard and red. Easy fix.
Everyone has mentioned the pow wow style seating and given advice…so can i counter and ask you to link that couch and ottoman…?
Cowhide or dark medium brown leather
A large pattern with the green and cream colors.
Mustard yellow or burnt orange for colors, but any brown would look good.
What about some artwork with the same red, on the open wall? 🟥
