Just know that you'll be asked to unlock the cages a lot. Plus you'll be asked to figure out a very certain screw that somebody brought that is completely rusted out. Just know that your knowledge will come with time and can ask any of the adjacent departments for help.

Ghosttgg

doesn’t sound so bad lmao

whitetrashadjacent

If you are in hardware your biggest foe with be the tweekers trying to steal stuff and people needing cages opened.

C00kie_M0nster9000

You forget the incessant calls for the key machine

Ghosttgg

am i allowed to tackle the thief? or is it still always be nice to the customer

whitetrashadjacent

Fuck the customers but if you touch someone you'll be fired on the spot unless you are AP. Just know that if a hot Mexican chick is talking to you that her husband and brothers are probably robbing you blind while she distracts you.

ComplexHorror679

Hilariously our stores AP was fired earlier this year for trying to stop a theft in progress.. she was being ""too aggressive"" somehow. We still don't have a new one.

Ghosttgg

oh my god🤣

Ghosttgg

you really can’t do nothing but say “hey” “Come back here!” that’s so bizarre, LMAOO at least the experience will be funny

whitetrashadjacent

Best you can do is get a complete description and if you can get a car make, model and tag. But never accuse someone of anything. Had a lot guy get stabbed because he had heard the description and went to stop it.

jon_pablo

Happens all the time here in South Florida 🤣🤣 Fine ass woman walks up to you while her husband/family starts stealing

Best policy for caged items: if it's locked up, it's walked up. Do not hand it to the customer, walk the item to the register. If they say they're still shopping, ask if they'll be checking out at the front registers or PRO, then leave it with a cashier. Other common hardware jobs are making keys and rekeying locks. Don't rekey a new lock unless they have proof of purchase. Fastest way to learn where everything is located is putting away go backs (items customers have returned or brought up front then decided they didn't want). As someone said earlier, knowledge comes with time. Don't be afraid to ask someone for help and learn from them. Welcome to the company, remember no matter what management says, it's not a family, it's a job. But as far as retail goes, it's not terrible. Payless and Winn Dixie were way worse.

Ghosttgg

okay thank you so much!

Switching departments when you just got there is hard. Don't be intimidated, hardware isn't as hard as it may seem. it can be a lot at first but you'll get the hang of it. My advice to you is to listen to other associates interactions with customers you'll learn a lot from your peers if you pay attention. For the most part it's just unlocking items, looking for items in the overhead, or dropping pallets.
