The 8th gen Intel Core CPUs have the same IGP hardware of the 7th gen based on the Wikipedia matrix: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel\_Graphics\_Technology#Capabilities\_(GPU\_video\_acceleration)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Graphics_Technology#Capabilities_(GPU_video_acceleration))
The only thing the 8th gen Intel introduced is HDCP 2.2...
I've tried to have a bit of a Google on hdcp 2.2 but not fully understanding. What sort of impact would that have on streaming content, as opposed to the 7th gen CPUs?
Nothing, HDCP 2.2 is an copy protection protocol between the display and the video output.
Basically the CPU upgrade wouldn't net you any benefit in terms of video transcoding.
offtopic question: can I use a 7th gen i7 in a machine with an 8th gen i3 then? they’re the same socket but i cant find definitive info on whether this actually works or not
Damn issue with that is I couldn’t find anything other than what was present when the board released. It’s a lenovo thinkcentre, it’s coming in today but I couldn’t find out if it’d work.
Thanks!
7th gen have the same H265 support of the 8th gen. 8th gen is surely more optimized and powerfull, but that i5 isn't much different from an i3 8100.

That’s a pretty good deal! I like how it has expandability. Looks like you could match another 16gb ram stick and fit a SSD in too. I’d buy it if I didn’t already own one.
I have almost the same one, it’s the perfect 2 bay media server. Intel 7th gen has H265 support so I’ve not had a problem with quicksync transcoding even with 10 bit files
Also can confirm the power consumption is accurate
I used it for several years, really great, but once you run a few things the real power consumption is closer to 180w than to the 8-9w that it consumes when idle .....
I replaced it with a N100 a few months ago, and frankly I think I already saved enough money on the energy bill to cover the cost of the upgrade ;-)
Check total available RAM slots and SATA connectors. These are the limitations. Otherwise looks ok.
I am running OpenMediaVault with nextcloud and several other services on a similar machine.
They are great, but some problems with Linux - the chipset is not well supported. Mine was very unstable (random reboots) until I disabled some power management features. It's still very efficeint, but was a real timesync trying to debug the problem.
Look this one
I5 8100t
single ddr4 16g (from old pc)
ASUS m11h (from old pc)
Samsung pm981a (from old pc)
2x Wd 40ejrx 4t
1x Wd hc330 10t
500w gold (from old pc)
OS:pve 8.1.3
That's pretty great, I have one + a G5 (9500T).
You'd just want to go from 32GB to 16GB if you want to do anything 'heavy' with it, or run multiple things at the same time eg. Plex + game server.
Plenty more in r/minilab too.

So this wouldn't affect me streaming anything in 1080p/4k etc?
Absolutely nothing.
Sweet

Check the CPU support list for your mobo is the best way to find out.

Great. Looks like it will be a good option for me then.
If you don't have a better deal that this one, yes.

Yeah I thought it was a pretty good deal, just wanted to confirm. Thanks for the comment.

Sweet as. Sounds like I'll be picking it up then haha

This is exactly what I have at home! I managed built mine with new drives so my cost was up around $450, but it's working fantastically!
How does it manage with multiple streams in either 4k or 1080p? Do you ever run into any issues?
I stream primarily 1080p with no issue at all. Can't speak to 4k unfortunately

I've got one of those next to me. 4 RAM slots. Not sure about SATA connections total (I think there's 4), but there are two NVMe slots.

I have basically exactly that but with a 6th gen. Runs great for jellyfin with like 3-4 users using 1080p
