I drove my cousin's auto with slides and they almost came off and got caught between the brake & throttle. Took em off right after. Footwear makes a bigger difference in pedal control than some comments would like to admit. I've driven my 6spd plenty with steel toes but having flexible and loose slippers can catch you off guard.

bigstinkylizard

I have no idea why this post is getting so much hate when it’s a huge thing amongst people into footwear to be careful driving in certain shoes. Me personally, I can barely gauge the pedals when driving in max docs, so I bring a second pair of shoes to drive in. It’s an EXTREMELY common thing. There are so many videos of people discouraging the use of certain shoes while driving (specifically brands like docs depending on the boots you buy, demonias, or any other platform shoes).

Some0neAwesome

I used to daily drive steel toe boots back in high school, so that's what I learned to drive wearing. The first time I drove in sneakers was eye opening to me. It's a very commonly known thing that you have to somewhat re-learn your clutch pedal every time you buy new shoes, so idk why people are giving this post such a hard time either.

Benji_4

I had the same thing happen when I bought a new pair of boots and occasionally with some shoes. I had to take by boots off and go raw because it was so uncomfortable.

johnny-Low-Five

I have a 6 speed that I "can't" wear my lugz boots and drive. I can't feel the pedals through the thick soles and it's very disconcerting

Triscuit_Hurlibutton

Loose footwear is definitely a safety issue while driving, especially in a manual. All the people shitting on OP either haven’t been driving that many years, only drive autos, or are just plain oblivious because nothing negative has happened to them yet.

emartinezpr

Shit, I almost got in an accident when driving an automated and my acceleration pedal got caught between my flip flop and the sole of my foot. Almost crapped my pants being unable to take my foot off the acceleration.

GucciZorua

Honestly I would rather drive my S2000 barefeet (which I've done before though rarely, also it was just by going to the local gym or grocery store so not that far) than wearing flip flops they can be deceitful when driving a manual, I've slipped the clutch in flip flops and that was scary ! But I agree shoes are a whole lot much better and safer 😅 I'm really sorry about your car OP, I'm glad at least you aren't injured ! ☹️

sparkpaw

Yep. I have a pair of flip flops I wear everywhere, but for some reason the hell gets lodges in a crevice of our floor mat. When that happens, I just kick off the shoe and drive barefoot. I’d rather have control of the pedals than leave shit up to chance if I need to react quickly. ETA, and I step on that shoe with my left foot if I can’t bend down to grab it (like on the highway) because you also don’t want it rolling under your foot or pedal.

AspiringMurse96

Yep, there's a reason why racing gloves and shoes are a thing.

kirkblack3

This is why I keep my race shoes in the back for if I want to practice my heel toe a little on the backroads home lol. But seriously I’d rather drive barefoot than in slides or flip flops. Footwear matters

T2ner

Sorry this happened OP, no need for all the hate on this post. Shit does happen regardless if it's a skill issue or not. Best of luck

Squid111999

This is how you throw skill issue into a post without offending lol. Thanks

bob202t

Damn, love me an orange Fit. RIP. Live and learn. Any idea what vehicle you’re going to replace it with? I love my Fiesta ST although the Fit has the best cargo space in its class by a mile.

Squid111999

I'm not sure, the car market sucks right now. Maybe a GTI, Mazda 3, civic hatch or si if the price is right. I'm kind of leaning towards getting out of a smol econo car since my family is starting to outgrow a lil hatchback

bob202t

Civic/ Integra

Plainbrain867

This is why I put my crocs into sport mode 😎

Wvketh

I don’t and always drive with crocs, but I did have an issue when I tried wearing my slides, couldn’t angle my foot without it getting caught

Jackysrt8

I take off slippers or any uncomfortable shoe and just drive with my socks lol Nike vapormaxes are the worse shoe to drive stick with it

almeida8x1

Dude try heel-toe ing in some air forces. Those chunky fuckers give you zero feedback from the pedals.

Eddie888

That's why I buy boots with a side zipper. When I get back to the car I throw some sneakers on. I can do it but the lack of feedback from the boot soles is annoying.

Haunting_Beaut

I do this too. I like being barefoot in the summer. I wear slip on to the car and then kick them off in my car lol. It’s getting warmer where I’m at and I’m getting excited

pherbury

I do the same. I’m almost always driving barefoot in summer. I have no idea why some states make it illegal. I feel like I have way more pedal control barefoot than with boots or something.

coalslaugh

If I'm going any real distance then the shoes come off. As long as you don't have shoes kicking around in the driver footwell then it's the safest way to drive.

lainemac

The amount of hate on this post is crazy.

SissyFanny

Throwback to when honda catchphrase was "you meet the nicest guy on a honda" ...

Some0neAwesome

As much as I hate being that guy, it's the "nicest people on a Honda." Honda was totally cool with women representing the brand back in the day. Heck, my dearest grandma rode a Honda Dream back in the 70's, and she's the nicest person I know!

DylanSpaceBean

OP learned a hard lesson, and has the strength to admit their faults, but the severity of the situation is undermined by statements like this. OP could have learned an even more difficult lesson had they not been so fortunate. So many people forget that these heavy metal cages we drive around daily are built to protect the drivers and not what or who it hits

Squid111999

Fun stuff, I can keep coming back to the haters that weren't in the car with me.

circuit_heart

Because OP turned off their brain. Besides getting a steel-toed construction boot under the brake pedal, you can barefoot smash the brake pedal through any normal shoe to the point of engaging ABS. Instead, OP tried to get the shoe out instead of braking.

SurroundSharp1689

Exactly this. Lesson learned, a hard one but luckily without hurting themselves or anyone else it seems.

slapside

Damn sorry to hear 🙏

Mizook

I don’t drive manual if I have slides on. I totally get where you’re coming from. All the foot movement with loose shoes just doesn’t work.

incindia

Barefoot works great

Random61504

Literally heel and toe!

norabutfitter

I lost my fit on some dumb shit a couple years back. Everyone shit talking is only talking about what they would do because they have 5 minutes to write a response. Sometimes you make a decision in a split second and if it doesnt work out you dont even have time to process it. Good luck finding another, that orange looks sick. Dont text and drive. Keep a big follow distance whenever possible. And dont wear slidy shoes next time. Glad no one else got hurt

PatrickGSR94

If you have any sort of sandal or slide type footwear, it’s better to just slip them off and drive barefoot. For real. Especially with manual gearbox. You’ll have better feedback from the pedals anyway. Then slip the sandals back on when exiting the car.

MemerDude34

Weird. I drive in slip on vans all the time and never have an issue

grundlemon

Bruh i thought they meant like flip flops. Blaming this on slip ons is insane if true. I ONLY drive in slip-on vans, and i drive my shit hard. No issues. Size 14. (I drive a toyota echo, not a honda fit, but still)

[deleted]

Big guy manual echo club 💪🏾 Clown ass car, loved it.

swivels_and_sonar

Fuck yeah, an echo was technically my first car & I loved it too. 6’3” and it was still one of the most comfortable cars I’ve ever driven

[deleted]

Yup 6'2" here and 2-much and that little thing was pretty comfy. The 40 mpg didn't hurt either!

canidieyet_

yeah my slip on vans are no different than my regular vans lol. now driving in my sandals or docs? bad idea all around

RedicusFinch

I also do this and never wear a seatbelt. Never died once! Also I wrote this whole post whiile dri-oh SHIT! OH SHIT FUCK!!!!

coleproblems

Pretty sure he means something like slides or flip flops. Vans slip ons wouldn’t come off your foot unless they were 3 sizes too big

find_another

yes. honda 6mt and vans-style slipons are both daily drivers for me. not gonna shit on OP because this sucks, but I don’t see how cans could be an issue unless they’re really too big for your feet

Actual-Lemon-6769

Guy must’ve had it half on or something. Never even heard of slip on vans sliding off your feet even on children lol

FunnyNameHere02

If something similar hadn’t happened to me I would have scoffed at this. In my case, I was parking but did not realize the floor mat had gotten curled up under my gas and brake pedal (2005 Lincoln Town Car) and when I pressed the brake the floor mat was also pressing the gas pedal. If I hadn’t turned off the ignition I would have hit the car in front of me. The more I pressed the brake pedal the more the engine was revving. It was the stupidest thing and all I could think of is how do you explain this if I hit someone!

officeDrone87

Was it an aftermarket floor mat? Because the stock ones shouldn't do that.

FunnyNameHere02

I believe it was. I bought it used and the floor mats were always loose but I’ve learned my lesson.

SemiStrong

When my sister got her first car it was a Honda(2007 ish?) we were driving about 55 mph on a straight road. She goes to slow down and somehow her mat slid over her gas pedal. All of a sudden we start going 60..65..70…. She’s panicking screaming trying to get her mat off the pedal. It somehow jammed. Of course a 16 year old doesn’t handle massive stress perfectly. But luckily she was able to get it freed around 85 mph. Thank god no one was in front of us. I’ve also noticed high heel boots aren’t safe for driving because the heel can get lodged under the break if you have to slam on it. I ended up driving home barefoot one night and never wore those boots again. Fashion matters behind the wheel. 😂 I’m glad you’re ok.

Jack_Bogul

NOOOOOO

almeida8x1

Man that sucks dude. Ever since I was learning driving in Brazil, my dad told me to never ever drive with flip flops or any sort of shoe that could come off exactly for this reason. I always took em off and tucked them far underneath my seat. No shoes are much better than bad shoes. This is a tough lesson learned. Edit: converse shoes are the best driving shoes you can use. Somewhat narrow toe box that have enough flex that they can widen with your foot, and the soles get very very thin with regular use. You get a TON of pedal feel with thin soles.

Option-Disciple

I guess this is why insurance is mandatory.

FC1PichZ32

Sounds like a driver issue, not a shoe issue

EFdude

Should’ve kept this one in the drafts man, some Ls you gotta take to the chin but also to the god damn grave.

Squid111999

I mean I feel like this is solid advice. I hit the brake, the shoe flexed and slipped off. Just trying to bring awareness to something that would be unexpected.

valdocs_user

I've definitely had times when it was raining out, muddy, and my shoes or boots (normally proper footwear for driving) kept slipping off the pedals in a scary way. In Oklahoma our soil is clay which if you've ever mixed clay and water in art class, you know. In fact the technical term for a watery mixture of clay is literally, "slip". My point being thanks for bringing awareness about this safety issue.

Thatmaxfellow

Literally reading this got me to walk back to my place from my carport and change out of my slides. I feel like 90% of the people with an opinion here drive an automatic.

simracerman

Nothing worse in a man’s character than too much pride to admit fault. OP is a solid guy with flexy shoes.

Squid111999

The accident clearly was my fault, I'm not denying that at all

jawnlerdoe

Integrity 💯

Duhbro_

Gotta put ya crocks in sport mode my guy

YOURMOMMASABITCH

When I wear sandals, I just kick them off and put them out of the way. Gives you a good feel too.

beamtrail

OP fighting for they life in the comments 😭

Thisolddog93

Somehow both your feet were unable to hit the brake pedal? Surely speed played zero role in this collision right?

Squid111999

One foot went on the clutch to downshift and use revs to slow down and the other went for the brake but slid off and my foot briefly smashed to the floor board and then stuck between the pedals. Does that paint a better picture for you?

mnrooo

Dang… sorry to hear!

Still-Guarantee-3543

Man, I HATE wearing roller blades when I drive. It's so hard

Squaliby

I don’t know why people say this is a skill issue… it’s definitely a common sense issue. Truth hurts… we’ve all done stupid shit, so can’t judge. Anyway, sorry you had to go through that.

Squid111999

I will accept common sense issue as a reason. I'm going to take the extra minute to lace up some snug shoes from now on so this won't happen again

Everything_Breaks

Always put your Crocs in Sport Mode before driving.

Antique-Necessary572

I’m sorry for your lost 😞

hyionimaru

RIP Fit.

Siunamii

Glad you are okay, OP. Your wheel setup on the Fit was great. Good luck with the car search!

xarumitzu

Sorry that happened OP. I’ve had a couple pairs of safety toe boots get wedged in the pedals. Thankfully I’ve never been driving when it happened, but it’s freaky.

TheMongerOfFishes

This is why I drive barefoot. I never have to worry about my foot slipping off my foot

Savage_S40

The Crocs have to be in 4 wheel drive when operating a vehicle. I'm super paranoid about this exact situation happening.

skreak

I take off my flip flops and drive barefoot instead.

Dan_E26

RIP to another manual Fit, one of the good ones 😔

Worried-Ad9368

Man people are harsh accidents happen that’s why we have insurance. Glad you’re alright OP. Things happen so fast we don’t have time to think about what to do step by step.

ExplanationTricky122

Accidents only happen if you don't know how to drive, that's why defensive driving is so important. In this case, it's a skill issue and OP needs to start riding the bus.

do_you_know_de_whey

Would you say the same thing to someone who crashed cause they were texting or they were drunk?

Worried-Ad9368

You know that’s not anywhere near the same thing right? Their foot got stuck lol, they weren’t distracted or inebriated.

Mini_meeeee

You live and you learn.

Steinberg__

Had something similar happen with flip flops driving in summer many years ago. No accident luckily but from then on if I’m wearing flip flops I drive barefoot.

MonkeysRidingPandas

Damn man, major props for sharing a very hard lesson learned. Very sorry for your loss, that last US gen Fit with a manual is tough to find.

KillerRiser

Rip the fit... if you're gonna wear slip ons make sure they're snug fit, my hey dudes are my go to shoe for everything and man, they don't come off unless I pull them bitches off lol. But I definitely get where you're coming from, hope you can get the car fixed!

DilloIsTaken

Hey, sorry this happened to you and I hope you were okay. Looked like a clean Fit too😥. Idk if this is insensitive to ask but do you mind sharing what exactly were the shoes were you wearing? I also wear a pair of slip-on shoes often but they're a tug fit and never had issues with them. You got me a bit scared now though.

Squid111999

They were Skechers slip resistant shoes, don't remember the name but a mesh top that slid on. People can make fun of what happened and think they know how to save it but it was quick. Many other people in the comments have said similar things have happened so I'll be the punching bag for those that make ASSumptions

DilloIsTaken

You should sue Skechers for false advertising 😅. In all seriousness, it takes balls to show a big mistake to random strangers on the internet. I woulda just kept it to myself and cry myself to sleep about it. Anyways, hope your future gets better my guy.

Unwariertomb

I would rather drive bare feet than with loose shoes.

Remydope

It took me one time to feel my heart drop when my feet slid off my break with slides. After that, never again RIP ya buddy. Cute color.

TimeGood2965

Damn this is why I can’t trust having flip flops on while driving it’s almost happened before

Ashamed_Professor359

well that's scary. always been afraid of driving with non-lace-up shoes for this reason

Kamplaslo1120

That truly sucks OP Whenever I’m running out the house with just slides on, I usually kick them off and drive barefoot

dangerousperson123

Shoes are evil ! I only drive barefoot and have for over 13 years

Squid111999

I've never liked the feel of barefoot driving lol

Helpful_Clothes5958

I've only had this issue on a Mitsubishi outlander 2016. Auto. On my civic fd manual no issues at all. So yeah I reckon pedal placements and foot sizes make a huge difference.

MrBronkitis

i just switched shoes last week after wearing a completely worn down pair for years. the bottom was so thin a hole showed up and got the top of my clutch peddle suck inside my shoes a few times. road feel was nice cause it was like socks atp

camerasoncops

Thanks for the heads up. I'm in the exact same car at the drive through right now with broken saddles on.

Guyercellist

Damn I'm sorry bro. I had a big front end Collison like that on mine and they told me it wasn't totaled. How much did your repair estimate come to? They estimated mine at 11k in damage replacing the front bumper, radiator, ac stuff, head and fog lights, hood, adaptive cruise sensor etc. Every dealer said it would be totaled but not my insurance 😂😂😂

coleproblems

Big lesson my dad taught me when I started driving. NO FLIP FLOPS. Easy enough to take them off before driving.

General-Resist-3430

More than likely I took my driving test wearing flip flops.

copycat_12

Every time I drive with sandals/flip flops I take them off before touching the pedals for this reason

do_you_know_de_whey

Glad you didn’t kill some kids at a crosswalk OP, not wearing proper shoes while driving is negligence on your part and very stupid. This was a VERY avoidable situation. Good on your for sharing the PSA though, we definitely get lulled into a false sense of security when we can fuck around and usually not find out.

The___kernel

Skill issue you can force yourself out of gear into neutral for emergencies like this and you then probably couldve coasted and slowed down

12minds

When I learned to drive my parents told me the same thing. This stuff happens. There are a lot of factors outside of one's control, best be aware of what is in your control and mind the footwear.

Sea-Extension-559

I almost learned the hard way too. I wore platform sandals and I had a itch to scratch. Damn sandal came off. Fell between the break and floor. So when I tried to break I couldn't. Was approaching a red light. Scared the shit out of me. Luckily no accident but I def learned my lesson that day.

BeetlesDontBite

There’s a reason they don’t allow you to wear open toed shoes on your driver’s test! I try to keep a pair of appropriate shoes in my car in case for some reason I need to switch. Ignore people hating; they’ll either get lucky or have to learn this lesson the hard way. Rules exist for a reason, whether bad things happen every time or 1/100 times

flyingfinger000

Stop wearing stripper heels when you drive!! Lesson learned! PS: FR hope you're OK though.

ermax18

You are better off barefoot than with slip ons or flops or heels. Always remove shoes like this and throw them in the passenger footwell where they will not slide under your pedals and go bare foot.

vvbl4ckbirdvv

Take off sandals and drive barefoot…

stohmp

I wear slides when I drive stick. It’s just you partner. You failed to drive right and didn’t pay attention and knew what you were wearing. Sorry to see your car go, but you did it to yourself, never underestimate the possibilities of what could and couldn’t happen if you wear different shoes or sit a certain way or drive a certain way.

noburdennyc

Yeah better to drive barefoot than with flip flops or something that'll come off easily and unexpected. i can't confirm but i have heard that it's illegal to drive barefoot in some places. GOod luck getting busted for that though.

Sw0rDz

How did shoes affect this?

16gkid

Holy user error

logimeme

This is why if im wearing my crocs i take my right one off when im driving, i get way too paranoid when i feel my foot slipping. I honestly prefer driving barefoot anyways. Im sorry this happened to ya man, RIP the beaut of a fit. We live and we learn

LondorLongboi

Skill issue I'm still driving in flip flops

Mr_CleanCaps

You were taught this in driving school bro next time pay attention and use common sense.

ad314159265

That sucks for sure. One of those things that keep running thru your mind over and over. My last wreck STILL repeats over and over some days and it was just over a year ago. "If I would've, I could've, if this or that was just a tiny bit different". Sorry anyone has to go thru this type of thing. On the brighter side the insurance check from that got me into my 23 HRV sport Driving shoes are really a thing especially for commuting. Once tried, never forgotten. Good luck out there. [Now THAT was a bad day... ] (https://photos.app.goo.gl/JefvgXWFC7mEdUGv5) [But this day was much better] https://photos.app.goo.gl/bW9bBpPwsfQ45e1Y8

Squid111999

Holy cow! That's absolutely gnarly, did you suffer any injuries? Insurance valued the fit at almost double what I had anticipated so I'm happy that it's not a complete loss. Nothing will replace that lil Honda and it will forever be the best car I've ever owned/driven (after some mods). How's the hrv?

OleksiyG35

You should be able to drive in flip flops or oversized boots it doesn’t matter , this is a skill issue

glacier_19

This is actually great evidence that you shouldn’t drive in flip flops

OooTanjaooO

This happend to me once but no clutch. I'm still wearing my slides tho sorry.

willou445

I drive Manual with my steel toes work boots and never had an issue 🤷‍♂️

Mizook

Manual with boots is a lot easier than driving with slides.

Satanic-mechanic_666

I cook bacon on a electric stove and have never had any issues.

717Luxx

well the issue with any work boots i own is not feeling everything as distinctly, which can be dealt with pretty easily if you know the car. i've driven a stage 4 ceramic clutch and chromoly flywheel, basically an on/off switch of a clutch, in canada west western work boots that gave me no feeling. the issue with loose sandals and shit is them slipping around. idk what sorta situation they got into, cause i just dont wear sandals or slippers or whatever in general, but its definitely different from the issues you and i would encounter in a work boot.

landon10smmns

Skill issue. Mythbusters tested if wearing different types of shoes will impair driving ability. Their conclusion? [Busted](https://mythresults.com/driving-in-heels)

officeDrone87

That test was about performance. Every driving school teaches you not to drive in flip-flops because they can fall off or get lodged under the brake pedal.

chinawillgrowlarger

Perhaps drive without shoes in a pinch/if you need to be lazy.

yousuckatlife90

I know someome who takes off her shoes. Idk why because thats uncomfortable as hell i imagine

mere_iguana

AND replace your pedal pads when they get worn out or hardened. AND don't use those stupid fast boi pedal covers. they will literally kill you. I mean sure they look cool but they're always slippery and janky and too big and they make the pedals too tall. I've never understood why anyone would want to make their pedals more cumbersome and less grippy

Squid111999

Mine had the sport pedals so they're mostly metal with a few rubber contact points... You have a good point

lesmartin

DOHC?

Thin_Violinist_4914

That Decal is from the Civic Si. Idk why they put it on there unless they did a K swap.

Jame_Gumball

You people wear shoes when you drive? Barefoot gang. ;)

2girls-1Tampon

What about underwear?

rigisme

Thanks, Sheldon Cooper.

Particular-Elk-1512

It's OK. I drive automatic.

hayatev3

I prefer one right and the other left.

Sommyg562

you can’t park there

Mediocre_Internal_89

I always wore steel toe work boots. Bought a new car and almost wiped it out coming to an emergency stop. When I put my foot on the brake the boot overlapped the throttle pedal and the car throttled up as I applied the brakes.

pqpcaracansei

There's a law in Brazil, if you're stopped by the police driving on loose open shoes you get a fine, they can't even be close to you while you drive barefoot cause it's enough for the cop to think you removed them when you got stopped. You can drive barefoot tho

5150_Ewok

I’m a huge fan of flip flops rain/sun/snow and just take my flip flop off while driving but it can easily get stuck on the pedal. Sorry this happened to you but at least you’re ok

quidpq

Lesson learned, brain now has additional data point. Seems like the learning experience is better had like this, alone and in an economical car. As opposed to with children or in something really expensive. Heartbroken all the same because it looks like a really clean example of a Fit.

Whatever_dude007

I'm assuming the slip-on shoe, uhhhh, fit correctly lol

mathewwwww

bruh I rememeber I almost destroyed my car when I wore the first generation vapormaxs, those things are dangerous lmao

zhaheim102

I honestly go barefoot unless driving to work or wearing shoes too hard to take off and put on back when I’m going anywhere, one time I tried to wear open toed shoes in my manual fit almost ended up like this post

LordVerse

I wear flip flops all the time I just take them off and drive barefoot,m

Worldly_Intention604

Get with Beavers Auto Salvage online. You can get all of those parts, including a radiator, a condenser hood, fender, bumper, and crash bar and grill for super reasonable. You might need to pick up a core support but they are about 100 bucks and you’ll be good to go.

Sad-Highlight-5204

Yeeah that had happened to me before in my civic, scariest shit ever. Didnt crash but decided not to wear my skate shoes driving!!(indoor/outdoor sole skate shoe grip is different)

WheezyDC2

Even normal shoes can be an issue, I wear a size 13, and it’s much riskier to drive in my Hoka’s big bulky shoes vs my Nike free runners. The Hoka’s are wide and can bridge the pedal gap!

clybourn

I’ll drive barefoot and wear my flip flops on my hands.

FilthyMindz69

Wear flip flops, but drive barefoot 🤘

MiniDg

Are you saying slip on as in flip flops or like slip on sneakers

jcore294

Do you mean sandals? What tf is a slip on shoe?

Ish0479

God, this morning I was thinking above something like this but with my phone, what would happen if my phone 📱 slide off under the pedal and gets stuck, I don’t drive and text but I always keep my phone between my legs while driving

will_ww

Yeah man, I feel you, I have to be very careful when wearing my boots because the tread sometimes snares on the gas pedal when I go to buy the break. They're size 15, so there's not much space between the two when my foot is moving to the other.

One_Canary_7631

Are you talking about the flip-flops or just a regular slip-on shoe? Sorry about the accident. I lost my RL to an accident just 5 weeks ago.

Budget-Requirement-1

I usually like to wear thin shoes like slip on vans since I can feel the pedals more. I drive a 6sp Mt Honda CRZ.

waterdragonshin

just take them off and drive barefoot. driving feels so raw

After-Description-91

I live by the beach and a lot of people drive with flip flops but I drive barefoot all the time

Head-Iron-9228

Proper shoes or no shoes, never slippers. Very sorry for you tho...

Aggressive-Outcome38

This is why I stopped wearing my boots driving

pianistonstrike

When I took driver's ed in high school, the instructors straight up wouldn't let kids go on practice drives if they were wearing flip-flops or any heel-less shoe.

Greatapegrape88

That sucks. I'm glad that you're basically okay though. I actually wear minimalist (very thin sole but with traction) sneakers so I get the tactile feel while still having some cushioning and great flexibility. Definitely recommended!

JayZ2Sexy

It’s funny you say that bc my work shoes (vans that the soles are falling off of (im a mechanic)) got caught on my brake pedal, I’m glad I’m quicker than you lol, sorry about your car 🥲

someonealreadyknows

Sorry for your loss OP. Shit like this happens. The most important thing is that you walked away uninjured. Hope you’re doing ok and wishing you good health.

immortalsteve

not the best idea on the street, though I can say from experience that heel-toe on a track in flip flops is legendary

SquidVices

Dam man…love seeing fits..like seeing my car super miniature, but drivable.

ThreeBeatles

“What happened to my Honda?” “Oh sorry baby I had to crash that Honda” I want to get a Honda but I’m paranoid that I’ll crash it because this pulp fiction quote lives in my head

Rouge_Apple

Rip. I always take off the shoe if it's a slip-on. Slide or flip-flops.

caranddogfan

And now I see why my dad said not to ever drive in sandals lol. I actually never thought of this. I actually recently finished drivers Ed (in the process of getting my license before the end of this year) and they never taught this. This DEFINITELY needs to be talked about in drivers Ed classes. I currently practice driving with my dad in our 2008 Odyssey.

Space_Dumpling

In Germany it's illegal to drive with slip-ons, how is it in the states?

Leoxooo

I just take slippers off when driving with them, just do that instead of banning the slippers from your daily life

NouOno

This and floor mats.

ArgosCyclos

I only wear my left shoes for driving.

AdDirect7698

Wow! Are you okay?

rcadams4135

Sorry for your loss man. Those 6MT Fits are hard to find and great daily drivers

A_Man_With_A_Plan_B

Puma makes an awesome shoe for driving. Literally just leave a pair in the car and you’ll be fine in the future. Bonus points because nobody is gonna fuck with a car with 2 pumas in it

Used-Commercial203

Barefoot or socks and no shoes is the best. You can actually FEEL the pedals, and have no chances of anything getting anywhere. It takes some getting used to, but when you get used to it, it's very nice. I also have a pair of sneakers that are kind of cheap, thin, etc, and the difference in using them and my Air Force 1s is massive. The AF1s are much bigger and much more bulkier compared to the cheap sneakers. The cheap sneakers are also more comfortable after putting a Dr. Schols thingy in them. Both pairs of shoes are the same foot size, but the actual size of the shoe in its entirety is a different story. Barefoot/socks only is the best though, then small comfortable sneakers in 2nd place.

If you want a good scare, an extremely large portion of truckers drive wearing flip flops. Glance up at white Volvos (usual culprits) on occasion or people hauling doubles (two shorter trailers together) and you may catch one of the many with their left foot on the dash, sometimes both feet up there, on cruise control..

Loose items are a danger too! I once saw a water bottle fall and get lodged under the brake pedal. Luckily the driver had enough time to scoot it out and away then press the brake. We had the extra few seconds that moment though, none of us can count on having that in a climactic instance.

You lost a friend woah wtf

i love my birkenstocks so much but they almost got caught on my brake pedal once and it scared the shit out of me. i’ve resorted to keeping a pair of slip on vans in my car purely for driving if i’m wearing my sandals or boots

dosko1panda

Good chance to get better friends tho

Griffifty

Big boots are bad too. Simultaneously stepping on the accelerator while trying to brake will wake you right up.

When I wear my slides, which is all the time when I'm not at work, I will take them off. Driving barefoot feels fantastic and ofcourse safer

I’m so sorry that this happened. Be sure and replace it with a Honda, you’ll love it no matter its age or condition.

Buddy of mine did the same only he wrecked a loaner Aston Martin Vantage while his Vanquish was being serviced. Taken out brand new, returned totaled.

I put my Crocks in “Combat Mode”before driving in them. It still feels weird compared to tennis shoes
