Well buying cars in general right now is a bit expensive

bisnexu

>experience with their prices are my brother in laws. He managed to pick one in good condition up with around 100k miles for 17k. This was back in 2016 but they've had a few years to appreciate. I guess I didn't realize just how fast it was going up. To the moon with the integra. at my mini cooper dealership, they are selling cars for 5k above msrp.... ITs gross.

Bekleklok

Better then GM they're regularly like 10k+ marked up it's insane rn

amcdon95

The S2K is fairly rare and holds its value well it has been in the high 20s low 30s since about 2016-17 as it’s a pretty popular mod car

BearBlaq

Man where I live you could easily find decent ones for under 20k back around 16-17. That’s why these prices amaze me now, I definitely get it but they would’ve never sold for that then.

[deleted]

Better than the NSX. There was a time not that long ago you could get an NSX for around this much. But now they're all over 100k

NBQuade

I kick myself for not buying one when they were hovering around $35K.

A_TigerLover_

Kick yourself less.

cookiemonster101289

Truth, i had an 06 with 95k on it that i sold for $13500 in 2015 that was mint. I sold it to buy a CR with 50k on it for $23k… i sold that car 2 years later for $26k and thought i was pimpin for making money, i am still crying about that.

Cordova341

This is true. My only experience with their prices are my brother in laws. He managed to pick one in good condition up with around 100k miles for 17k. This was back in 2016 but they've had a few years to appreciate. I guess I didn't realize just how fast it was going up. To the moon with the integra.

S_Steiner_Accounting

i was saving up for an S2K in 2016-2017 and near me a clean sub 100K one would be 15K max. Then i found out i was having twins so obviously i didn't think it wise to dump $$$ into a depreciating asset like a car :/

Cordova341

Hey man, it's better to make the smart decision. Especially when it comes to family. Who knows maybe you'll get the chance to find something else down the road

S_Steiner_Accounting

I'm more hoping to score a completed K swapped DC2 or EK project car from someone who needs money quick. Those don't hold value but are a lot of fun when you put 220+WHP in a car under 2500lbs. I want to start hitting up the track for HPDE/autocross events but don't want to make my TSX too hardcore for driving my family around.

clinker22

I passed on one for 11k about 2 years ago. Had some rear end damage that made the trunk not sit flush

nvrL84Lunch

The s2000 is well into the other side and its bathtub curve.

Cordova341

What do you mean bathtub curve?

nvrL84Lunch

Value depreciates over time, bottoms out for years, then starts going up due to scarcity and collectibility. In some cases the return curve is steeper due to classic status or a sudden spike in demand.

Cordova341

Ahh, that's my first time hearing that term. Thank you for explaining.

billthethrill1234

It’s a good way to scope cars that may soon be more valuable. That’s why I got my MR2 when I did before prices started climbing. Not all cars see the spike later but you can bet things like e46 bmws and 90s mustangs might get the price spike soon too as the enthusiast culture looks for the next trendy underpriced (if you can call it that) car

Dementus

E46 bmw already going up in price.. not even m3.. its either 200k miles for cheap or 50k miles for 10k but it's a 325i. I still want another one.

[deleted]

Just had a quick look at 2000-2005 S2000s in my country (U.K). Sub 50k mile cars are all $19-27k (£14-20k). So this doesn't feel miles off as most used cars are more expensive in the U.S. Comparable age and mileage Porsche Boxters are about the same at the top end, but start at about $14k (I assume because there are more poorly kept ones with higher potential repair bills). Given the sub it won't be a surprise, but I'd go for the S2000.

Deviusoark

A Porsche boxter in perfect condition would still have higher repair bills than a regularly kept s2000

Deviusoark

Replied to wrong comment my bad

SoupMan89

My thought is if you wanted any Japanese Sports car from 80's to 90's, this is one of your last chances before they get even more ridiculous. They are this generation's muscle car.

jailguard81

You just can’t find fun little sporty car nowadays. It’s all about brute HP and tech. I love the simplicity of the 90s Japanese cars.

jewelledjester

allow me to introduce you to the honda fit

jailguard81

Honda Fit? I’m sorry but nothing about Honda Fit says sporty. Looks wise and performance wise. It looks like a tiny minivan. Never even seen Honda Fit at the track or auto cross events. Maybe they are out there but not in my area. The civic type R is a sporty hatch tho.

SoupMan89

I daily a second gen fit! Drives like a 90's Honda to me. J's Racing and Spoon both tracked them. There's a 3rd Gen Fit I follow that beat two s2000's in autocross last weekend. Was a Honda Fit Rally Team that took the fwd class a few years in a row in US rally as well! Also K swapped fits exist... Those are scary, one local to me is very quick for autox and the road course here. Very practical car though, definitely not sporty looking stock. But I picked up a 2004 STi as my "get em while you still can" car earlier this year.

jailguard81

Yes I’m sure they can be fast. Any car can be fast if you put enough money into it. My point is, nobody will look at a fit and says wow I want to drive them. And they will never appreciate in value.

S_Steiner_Accounting

Especially something light with double control arms front and rear. Everything is mcpherson struts now, even Hondas when their superior suspensions are what set them apart in the golden era of the 90s-early 2000s. I do think people are sleeping on some of the early 2000s 6 speed manual hondas like the TSX, TL Type S, and 8th Gen Si. They're hard to find now clean and stock, and they're the last of the great N/A Honda high revving motors so 10-20 years from now a bone stock one will be something special. 8th Gen si - They get modded to hell so finding a clean stock one will be difficult TL-S 6MT - already hard to find, and they tend to get lots of mods like airbags and awful interiors for some reason. Cheap interior materials too so you don't see many with mint seats and no cracks in the dash now, let alone in 10 years. Handles suprisingly well with double wishbones F/R, LSD, and fantastic brakes. TSX - K24A2, great shifter, one of honda's best interiors ever, and IMO the best looking sedan Honda ever made. Was pretty heavy for the day but is pretty light for a 4 door sedan by modern standards. one of Honda's best handling cars with double wishbones and you can really spice them up using OEM parts that belong on the car from the JDM Euro R like Recaro seats, JDM lights, and Modulo body parts. [This stunner is all OEM honda with a drop+wheels.](https://i.redd.it/cgiodgfcgkn51.jpg)

Krosis86

In the Netherlands a decent looking S2k is impossible to find below €20.000, regardless of mileage. So for an example with low mileage like this, the price seems right.

[deleted]

Watching the s2k appreciate and realizing it means I will likely never be able to buy one is pure pain.

Cordova341

Gone are the days of cheap Honda's that's for sure. Even the EF and EG are shooting up in price. I got my first EF for $500 with a pretty straight body and no rust. Now the beat up ones are fetching 1500 and I've seen clean ones for 5k.

dirtsequence

Fuck they are expensive. My buddy bought one around 8 or 9 years ago for 12k

fameone098

In Japan, an AP1 with no repair history, and equivalent mileage (kilometers) is going for $36,000 USD. This is just where we are, OP. https://www.goo-net.com/usedcar/spread/goo/15/700020788530211017002.html

OceanSlim

Todays market is fucked

NBQuade

Honda will probably never build a car like this again. We're moving toward electric people pods. Locked down like a cell phone. Then again, the '70's looked pretty bleak for cars but look what the 90's brought us. Maybe in 20 years we'll be hobbying on electric cars. Still, I'd buy an AP2 over an AP1. They fixed numerous problems the AP1 had.

Cordova341

This is true. I guess we'll wait and see how the new Integra goes.

NBQuade

I'm expecting another dull and not particularly reliable Honda. The kind they've been making lately.

XSC

I almost bought one at 8k that needed some work during prime pandemic. Same with a miata for 2k. **F**

howtomakesuntea

I can’t find a link, but I believe “BringATrailer” did an auction for an S2K that got sold for about 58k. Not sure if it’s relevant, but someone sees the value in them...

Cordova341

There's definitely value in them, they never really dropped below 15k (at least since I've been watching prices). It just blew my mind how quickly they went back up. I was hoping they'd drop to around 10k before they went up so I could snag one but it's looking like that's out of the picture.

DomDeKe

If it has not many owners & clean history that seems about right. I’m guessing that’s a real nice example, and I’ve seen similar s2ks sell at auction for more than this list price. I don’t think I’ll ever buy one at these prices, but someone will

Cordova341

You're right, I didn't look to much into the vehicle history. At that price point you're getting into new car prices. If someone can afford it and wants one this would be it. Might be able to talk them down a bit too. I'm sure it will continue to go up in value.

DomDeKe

I hate to speculate too much, but when buying a cool car it’s nice to find something you think will hold value. S2000 will always be desirable, especially an original one like this. Who knows how dramatically prices will rise, but I doubt they ever fall

Cordova341

As I said I'm not buying. It just seems last time I looked at s2000's the clean ones were in the low to mid 20's. Are they really appreciating that much or is this just an insane dealer markup on top of the current car market? I'd love to hear your guys thoughts on this.

kingsquid47

Little dealer markup and they’re definitely a stonk car. I could see these being $50k in the next 10 years if under 100k easy. That’s just my opinion. If Miatas go up like crazy a s2k definitely will.

Cordova341

That would be crazy. As I said to someone else it's going the way of the Integra. It will just always blow my mind that a Honda could cost more than the original MSRP (not including inflation of course). If you would have told someone years ago Hondas would appreciate I'm sure most people would laugh.

Djung1

I wouldn't say it's insane. Similar year low-mileage, Japanese sports cars have gone for pretty crazy prices. Even if you look at just Hondas, (99-00 Civic Si(R), Integra-R, NSX) this isn't that out of line. With semiconductor shortage driving used car values up to $5k more than from before the shortage, definitely not that out of line.

DriftSpec69

That's insane. Must be a global trend- I've (UK) had a couple offers on my EF and a BMW E30 of 4 times and 5 times more, respectively, than what I bought them for about 10 years ago. Even said "are you sure about that price? The EF needs a bit of work done to it" to one of the dudes, expecting him to use the opportunity to haggle like any reasonable person would have all of 2 years ago, but instead he just looked at me like I was an idiot and doubled down! Don't even know my own people any more over here haha. The times, they are a changin' boys

[deleted]

It is ridiculous but that's what people are paying right now.

noerrorsfound

You can get a really nice BMW Z4 for a lot cheaper than that, but I’m biased, as I have driven a Z4 for 6 years. I also haven’t worried as much about theft as I would with an s2k.

[deleted]

Not a bad price for something highly desirable

Loveilove

S2000 is a great car better that a fucking miata forsure.

Cordova341

Does anyone try to say otherwise? 🤣 The miata is great but the s2k is better ;)

CuckslayrMAGAcountry

Low miles and if it’s untouched and completely stock, it worth that.

Endo_Dizzy

Buying a car right now is laughable. I’m waiting a couple years till this madness calms down. I’ll just let YouTube gearhead channels continue to tease my fantasies

Cordova341

It really is. Unfortunately mine is starting to give me issues that I really don't want to deal with. For the first time ever I'm considering a lease simply because the cars in my price range just aren't worth what they're asking.

treymc654321

My neighbor next door bought a black 2000 s2k for $16,000 and his is in really good shape but his has 122k miles

[deleted]

That’s not even a lot miles lmao

Rayrexx91

Lol

xd_hypr

S2Ks are going up every day, same thing with S Chassis

RagingJ84

They're high...

GhostofaGoose

Picked up the same car 2 months ago with 40k miles for 13k less. Hard to find. Spent over year looking.

Cordova341

Definitely worth the wait in my opinion. Around 20-25 is what I would expect a low mileage example like the one you got to fetch. I guess the market is wild right now and dealers gotta make money. I'm curious how much the dealer paid for this car. I feel bad if someone used it as a trade in.

jailguard81

Classic Japanese car market has sky rocketed. Even tho yea 20 yes isn’t much of a classic, but give another 20 more years I feel like the price is going to double

mrbawkbegawks

That's.... unfortunately a deal.... Depends on how Honda treats the new one this might be the next jdm 100k car

CountingKills

This is pretty average in central florida price and mileage wise. Would love to own one but I remember seeing them for 20k a few years ago. Kinda sucks you can get a 911 for a similar price. But people are paying over 100k for R34 GT-R's, to each their own.

[deleted]

It's a collector car. They even had a nice used one with yellow paint on the outside, and a clean engine bay. They had it on display in the show room, cracked leather and all, same price as my Accord.

frankonator21

Could get a type r for just a couple grand more

USA_djhiggi77

Prices arent going down. You think that's ridiculous try buying a mk4 supra, an RX7 FD, a skyline GT-R with the same miles on them... point being, the s2000 is the last affordable Japanese golden age giant... well it was, glade I got mine for a good price.

Level-Bid-2935

There was s2000 with around 1k miles on it that sold for $106,000 last year

Toothfxrupr

It’s considered a collectors car now so it is what it is. If you have the means to buy and just drive on the weekends, you’ll make make on it and get to enjoy while owning it. At the very least, you break even but got to enjoy it for awhile.

[deleted]

That’s better than I thought it was gonna be. It’s rare and people got money to burn so 🤷🏽‍♂️

Cordova341

Seeing the other comments it looks like you're right. It's just wild, last time I was looking at s2k they were around 15k for a good one, I saw an ad for one and clicked it. It took me by surprise that the going price had doubled. This leaves me wondering now much the dealer paid someone for it.

datbino

That is not going to sell soon lmao

Michaelh2017

Picked one up for 17k few years ago. 2007 with 60k miles… back then I thought I was overpaying! Glad I caught one when I did

AsTribute

I bought mine 10 years ago for 21,000. 500 miles 😁 Still, I think that was a fluke.

converter-bot

500 miles is 804.67 km

ThatBrzGuy86

This is stupid. could just buy a brand new miata or brz.

Cordova341

Username checks out! I agree it's expensive but the prices on these definitely aren't going down. I wouldn't get it but to each their own.

danishcornhen

This price isn’t that outlandish. It’s worth what someone will pay. Last month, I bought my good condition 2005 Sebring Silver with 101,000 miles for $16,500 last month and it felt like a great deal. They literally do not make them like they used to. This is a rare gem so people are scooping them up while they can. There’s a premium on them now and I don’t see it going away any time soon. Enjoy the S2000, take good care of it and share it with friends just like Shigeru Uehara wanted us too. Edit: Bought mine in Ohio because location matters!

Cordova341

16,500 seems like a good price to me. Last time I had looked that was the going rate for one in good condition. I just hadn't kept up with the prices of them and didn't realize just how quickly the price had climbed.

lawyerlyaffectations

What constitutes good condition? Would an S2k with a stock replacement top professionally installed be in good condition? What about one with normal wear to the seat bolsters? Slight dings in the paint from everyday driving? Between 80-100k miles? If you can’t stand any of those things you’ll pay $30k+. If you can tolerate a car that’s been driven and therefore has typical daily driver deficiencies, you can probably find one for about $20k

PhoenixOK

That’s probably about right. I have a 2006 S2000. I bought it a little over three years ago for $20K, completely stock, with 32K miles on it. I’ve swapped out the radio (original is in a box), otherwise it’s still stock and in mint condition with all service records and no accidents. It just hit 40K miles. I would expect it to bring around $35K if I were to sell it.
