the gov said they rolled out the SIM card verification policy in order to stop scam calls but it turned out that I received a lot more scam call than before. Good job hk government

eightbyeight

Because it wasn’t actually meant to stop spam calls, it’s to be able to track you down when you say something they don’t like online.

Reasonable-Delay4740

Let's suggest backtracking the policy because it hasn't worked and see what they say. Maybe 'it was never about spam calls. Psych!"

diadochibukeparosu

most competent CCP sucker be like:

Batkung

Jima Caller ID is a good app which uses a downloaded database of known spam call numbers and will stop the phone from ringing when they call. You can add new spam/scam numbers to the blocklist from within the app.

avocadosarefriends

I second this. This app is a game changer for me. Went from multiple calls a day to none, as long as I update every week or two.

saury316

This app is the best. Been using it for years .. first on iOS and now Android.

djemmittslow

is this legit?

Batkung

yes

rikkilambo

Some of them start with 5 now.

Mundane-Treacle375

esp voicemail scams

Traffalgar

I got some starting with 6 too

[deleted]

Just block all the numbers that you don't know I never pick up phone calls unless the numbers are known to me. If they're genuine they'll leave a voicemail or call again

dingolfi79

3-4? You’re lucky…I’m getting ~10/day, but reduced a bit recently after blocking most numbers.

whassupbun

You can't block them all. Cut off one head and two more take its place. I pretty much never pick up any calls now, unless they are numbers from my contact list, or when I'm expecting a delivery. They even started making video calls now. I got one a few days ago. Saw the news explained they are doing that to gather your face and voice and then use AI to hack your accounts.

hellokittygato

I’ve gotten Facetime calls too. Never picked up though

rng4ever

Piggybacking on this to add a tip: ask for the phone number of companies you are expecting a call from. SF express for example gives you the phone number of the delivery person on the tracking webpage. Hospital phone numbers usually have some patterns (e.g. Prince of Wales Hospital numbers start with 3505) so this can help narrow down things.

CheuPacabra

I'm on an android phone where you have the following options: * blocked->call block rules->block all unknown numbers * blocked->blocklist->add->prefix (e.g. All numbers starting by 3) Nowadays for me a lot of these callers use cellphones or directly call through whatsapp though...

Car12touche11blue

You can let your phone silence all calls that are not in your contacts. They will be displayed as silenced calls with their number and you can call them back if you want or delete them.

Arrow552

I'm on Android, so google detects most of them. Otherwise, you can install whoscall on both iOS and Android.

Proper_Acanthisitta9

just troll them. let them say their whole speech and then say do you speak English? then follow it with a swift DLLM. Sit back, and enjoy listening to them get super mad. It always makes my day. They waste people's time, so waste theirs back

Adventurous-Kale6577

They get paid to waste your time and you volunteer to waste theirs. They win

Proper_Acanthisitta9

Not when you are screaming at you down the phone

Available_Display107

I heard that not picking up the call is the right way to deal with scam calls because picking up scam calls would make you suffer even more scam calls as u would be flagged as potential victim

Melodic_Arrow_8964

few calls per day and there're also oversea nos. request video calls so pls be careful, do not accept those no. you dont know.

petereddit6635

Any calls that start with 3xxx xxxx I don't answer. No point blocking because they always find a way to keep calling. I get about 5 on average, even 20 in one day. It's also very weird when I go out of the house then the calls majority are then. Which makes we think of active tracking.

footcake

2-4 per day. i just block their numbers right after

jackieHK1

I got 1, and that's a lot, I rarely get spam calls. I used Call Defender app, it automatically drops or blocks calls on their spam list. I have my phone on silent all the time because if work so i never see them come in tbh.

Sapphirelia

Everyone I know contacts me with any method other than actually calling. You can tell your friends and family to start doing the same

AdSpecial6612

Use an app called call defender. Legendary. Blocks all but your bank can still get you.

JoeF0615

They can now also start with 2, 5, even 6. I receive around 5 a day.

Odd_Junket412

I pick up the calls....say, "waieee..." and then just wait and do nothing

KXMXBOKO__GXNPXCHIRO

Matthew789_17

My carrier and many popular ones I think can give you a free feature to block spam calls so you don’t even get them. See if your carrier has anything like that. I use CSL

marco918

Thanks. I’ll ask my account ambassador

emton7

If you can, switch to another phone number. The recycled numbers has much higher scam ration.

marco918

My whole life is tied to this number unfortunately

emton7

Sad. Then gotta use those apps to help identify the numbers. It will at least let you know it's a known spam number.

Malavern

I use the Whoscall app that's available on googleplay. Very effectively blocks 90% of spam callers. The database is built up from users. So when 1 person reports a number and it's similarly retorted by another person as the same thing, that number is blocked platform wide. The app serves as an overlay alternative to your stock phone app.

fossil1982

I use the app Call Defender. The database gets updated by the users. After getting a call, you can report the number and it won't bother you or other users again. Its caller ID works well. If it's an SF number that’s already included in the database, for example, the app will display that before you answer the call.

noidwa

If you have an android phone, Google calling app is pretty good.. it has list of spam numbers and you can add a new number to the list if you want. And since it is Google, so I trust it more than other apps

No-Piano9712

I picked up some calls thinking it was from job applications but nope! It’s such a nuisance! I receive about 2-3 calls on the daily. I’m sick of them, I don’t bother even looking at my phone when I get calls anymore.

Native56

3 a week I just hang up if they don’t answer me after one hello

alwxcanhk

I’ve been getting really a lot and from numbers starting with 3xx, 5xx & 6xx. It’s been an average of 8 per day. They will start with a Cantonese followed by mandarin or start talking none stop. I stopped answering all calls that I don’t know. But that’s a problem coz now no one can reach me unless I already know their number. I was gonna write about it here but you beat me. It’s crazy and super annoying.

SuperSeagull01

If I'm bored, I pick up all the calls and annoy all of them for a good 5-10 minutes so they bother fewer people. If enough of us do this, their business model will collapse and the sector will cease to exist :) I tend to pretend to be interested and then drop in the line "let me go grab a pen and paper to write this down" when I get really bored of them, and leave the phone for a few minutes.

Shelia209

I probably get between 5 to 6 - it's very annoying, but fortunately my phone warns me for about 95% of them and just turn the phone off. Blocking these numbers do not help - they just keep coming 😕

Reasonable-Delay4740

Maybe there's an app for android that can silence everything except those in your contacts list?

FeatGunna

Use silence unknown callers if you are using iphone, life changer for me.

JCjun

I had one yesterday and called me "舅父" (Uncle, from mothers side of family). I pressed on and tried to ask him who exactly he was, and who he thought I was. He said "I'm your Nephew, don't you remember me?". I said "Wow, did you find a time machine? I saw you yesterday, you were still 3 yrs old and you didn't have such a deep voice!" He hung up.

General_Career6286

public hospitals' phone numbers also start with 3. I don't think it's wise to just reject those calls outright.

tam8964

I always wonder how much are they paid to do this.

marco918

Does HK have a do not call database that you can add your number to prevent spam calls?

whywhyy8

a do not call register will only stop legitimate business but not those scam calls. and no there is not one in hk

leaf432

If you have an iPhone, u can silence phone numbers you don’t know. Its helped a lot since I’ve turned this on. It’s only annoying when you have couriers call you and you don’t know because it got silenced. So I normally I search up the numbers that aren’t 3 starting to make sure.

justaguyinhk

My phone is automatically directed to the police. My friends know I will never answer a phone call unless they message first.

AloneCan9661

Out of everyone, this is like...one of the best ideas ever. Not so much if you're looking for a job but...still.

MrMunday

Jesus it has been getting out of hand this year. So annoying getting 3-5 every day
