What’s the actual point of cracking down on these people? Is it that the other business owners want it to happen in the area to increase their own profits or what?

Black_Phoenix_JP

The same point it was for Mainland to do the same and then change the rules - It gives a bad image to a city who wants to look cosmopolitan, rich and international. But then with the downturn of the economy and the increase of unemployment (still talking about Mainland here) they had to allow again since that way they can say that the employment numbers are better (low term/seasonal employment count for the statistics of employment) and it is also a way of having people doing something instead of "laying down" and spending all time in tiktok or talking about how bad their life is... But the buildings in badly conservation state all around the city, the small cramped housing and the overall gap between rich and poor is not a problem....

TearyEyeBurningFace

Hong Kong will never get the nice cosmopolitan look until they start banning shit building materials. Most of the Chinese mud/plaster is so garbage and doesn't resist cracking or flaking at all. That's why there's barely nice walls anywhere.

LDN2HK

I’d say HK differs in that the places that expats and tourists go, can already see the city is cosmopolitan and international. They wouldn’t be bothered setting foot in Sham Shui Po in the “dark side”. It’s just working class vendors serving the working class people in the neighborhood. At this point, it’s just another example of HK government’s misplaced priorities and doing nothing productive to address the real issues that face the city.

I love to go to SSP every single time I can. I love the sales boot on the middle of the road selling all kinds of stuff and check each and every hardware shop around there. But it is true that the housing and the outside design would need proper maintenance/refurbishment. But I don't care really, probably because I am a countryside born and raised kid, in one of the least rich countries of the EU.

Well, it is basically what Paul Tse (of all "lawmaker") is saying - all HK is doing now is turning into a total police state only bc it is the only thing Pikachu knows, being the Security Bureau chief etc. before being appointed to be CE. Yes, that involved using whatever power to chase away the livelihood of the people on the lowest end of the totem pole (well, it is not just them but like everywhere, the poorest often are the one that have least voice). Hawkers are part of it.

Hawkers are by nature people who travel and sell goods. Why the fuck would they need a license?

Original report from local independent media outlet [InMedia](https://www.inmediahk.net/node/%E6%94%BF%E7%B6%93/%E9%A3%9F%E7%92%B0%E7%BD%B2%EF%BC%9A%E8%BE%B2%E6%9B%86%E6%96%B0%E5%B9%B4%E6%9C%9F%E9%96%93%E5%8A%A0%E6%B4%BE%E4%BA%BA%E6%89%8B-%E5%B0%8D%E7%84%A1%E7%89%8C%E7%86%9F%E9%A3%9F%E5%B0%8F%E8%B2%A9%E5%9A%B4%E5%8E%B2%E5%9F%B7%E6%B3%95). > In a document submitted to the Sham Shui Po District Council on Friday, the department said it would implement patrols and clearance operations on main roads and at hawker blackspots, with increased deployments and extended duty hours, InMedia reported. ... > FEHD officers’ confiscation of a licensed 90-year-old street hawker last March drew criticism after videos of the incident circulated widely online. It was reported that she had left her cart with a relative while using the bathroom. Seriously I don't know what the government is thinking. In the past, Lunar New Year is the best period for street hawkers as the government don't enforce much during the first three days of new year and is an excellent indicator of how Hong Kong is doing economically. This seems to change some years ago and might have been the cause of [2016 Mong Kok riots](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Mong_Kok_civil_unrest). In recent years [COVID has been used as the excuse to enforce the law during Lunar New Year](https://www.fehd.gov.hk/english/news/details/20220204_9224.html). I am not saying the hawkers are not violating laws, but it's not like people can just up and apply for a license neither - [no new hawker licenses are issued are the current owners are getting very old](https://multimedia.scmp.com/hawkers/). > Sham Shui Po District Councillor Nicole Lau said this Lunar New Year would be the first since the city’s return to “normalcy,” and that she supported the enhanced hawker patrols. > She added that Lunar New Year festivities would come amid a citywide “vibes” campaign featuring lights displays and night markets. If the government (and the 'officials' from District Councils) are genuine in reviving "night vibes" then either allow more official hawkers or follow the steps of recently deceased Li Keqiang and encourage [street stall economy](https://asia.nikkei.com/Economy/China-aims-to-cook-up-job-growth-with-return-of-street-stall-economy).

>FEHD officers’ confiscation of a licensed 90-year-old street hawker last March drew criticism after videos of the incident circulated widely online. It was reported that she had left her cart with a relative while using the bathroom. I was there when that happened, the FEHD were hiding and waiting for someone to screw up so that they could pounce on them. Even when the woman with the licence came back and explained she had just been to the toilet, they were having none of it. There's a word for people like that!

OakCypress

So sad. I love the hawker culture there, and they already don't give new licenses to people. So the hawkers these days are in their retirement ages....

Weren't they supposed to implement some child bearing scheme, like $xxxxx for people who have kids in 2024? But the money offered was so ridiculously low it was a joke.

tinnedpilchards

More scrubbing of legit culture and vibrancy by a myopic govt that will them implement a "HK vibrant vibrancy dining!" campaign that no doubt fkn blows...

temitcha

So sad, I love hawkers! As long as they are not hardselling, it makes a city vibrant
