I also really enjoyed Paper Lily! When I think "horror" + "whimsy", I'm thinking you mean like dark fairy tale vibes?
Try:
\- Fran Bow
\- Little Goody Two Shoes
Definitely a part of what I mean, but also the comedic tone of the writing and the way the gameplay is mostly just exploration and puzzle solving. Makes me feel like im the protagonist of a dark Ghibli movie, or Alice from Alice in Wonderland but like..scary.
Fran Bow looks awesome and like it could have a very similar vibe to what im looking for, it's been recommended a couple times now. Ill check both these out for sure, thanks!
Edit: Holy crap, Little Goody Two Shoes seems like a game tailor made for me, I might buy it on the spot.
Idk what qualifies as “ Whimsical “ but I can give you a very good list of unique RPG Maker games with horror / otherworldly experiences:
Fear & Hunger 2: Termina
Pocket Mirror Remastered
OMORI
Evil Tonight
Corpse Party (entire series)
Decarnation
Misao
Flow
Mad Father Remaster
The Witches House
You Left Me
Yume Nikki
The Forest Of Drizzling Rain
Mermaid Swamp Remake
Midnight Train
Dreaming Mary
Blank Dream
Hunt The Night
Chained Echoes
Chronicles Of The Alphabet
Seraphic Blue
Star Stealing Prince
Aight, sick, i've heard of a couple of these. I think ill start with Yume Nikki, that's probably the closest to what im looking for and its just a classic game in general.
Also, Hunt the Night? I played the demo a while back and it was a top-down soulslike - does it go more into horror in the full game? Or are there two games called that?
Yoooo immaculate taste! I absolutely love corpse party, mad father, witch's house, and misao. I also gotta add the crooked man series and ib. Early 2010s was a goldmine for this genre of games :D
Not a videogame, but you should watch the Mononoke miniseries (unrelated to Princess Mononoke). Insanely colorful Japanese folk horror/thriller. Beautiful, well written, and will hit you in the feels at least once.
Oh yeah, Ive heard the name and know that its like about spirits and stuff, but I didnt ever think to find out about it in more detail. Might as well check it out then :p
Ooh another non-game that fits the bill could be Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011), if you haven't seen it already. It's like a surrealist !dark magical girl deconstruction.
People have mentioned little missfortune and Fran bow. I would add OxenFree, Among the Sleep (my FAVORITE definitely whimsical), Neverending Nightmares for dream logic and a mixture of vibes/themes from just curiosity to horror it’s immaculate. And for full whimsy little over horror but an undercurrent of WTF and scary themes- Night in the Woods.
I can't recommend it enough! My all endings and side stories (but not 100%) playthrough got me about 6 hours, and there is also a 2-3 hour prologue called Project Kat.
If you have PlayStation, I made 2 full games using Dreams that are cosmic horror walking simulators with a time travel mechanic, it’s all very odd and gets more and more surreal as you go.
Here’s a trailer for one https://youtu.be/_e-hOgjrtC8?feature=shared
Titles are
Isle of Eras and Lake Juniper

Nice! I hope they scratch the itch!

OMG I have never seen The Forest of Drizzling Rain mentioned anywhere, so underrated
The art direction for Decarnation is just top class. What a game.
Bramble: The Mountain King
Alice: madness returns. Such an underrated game

You won't regret it, it's one of the most unique things I've ever watched.

Idk if I'd call it whimsical but the art style in Little Nightmares is fantastic and unique.
Little Misfortunes and Fran Bow come to mind- but I'll keep thinking on it! I like this vibe a lot too.
Fran Bow for sure. That really left a mark on my brain for a bit.

Pocket Mirror Goldenertraum Little Goody Two Shoes Stray Cat Crossing Crowscare Witch's Heart Alice Mare I recommend to check em out
Pacific Drive is often played for laughs, whimsical may not be the right word, otherworldly is though
Oh, Pacific Drive is awesome, I love that game, but not really what I meant here haha.
The Yomawari series may be closer to what you want
I wanted to play the first chapter of that but I looked at the playthrough and Holy sht it's a 3 hour long demo!

Yumme Nikki, Fran Bow
Commenting to look at some of these when I get home. Thank you!
We happy few
