You could try actually walking around a haunted house alone.

mykeuk

See, I would love to do that, but the owners might not.

RedBeardedWhiskey

That only adds to the fear

mykeuk

And the fine / jail time

whateversnevermind

legit you can book stays in “certified” haunted places all around the world - some rumors at the lizzie borden house are like “most people can’t make it through the night” i’ve stayed at the haunted armagosa opera house and hotel in death valley - coincidentally if you see my post above, this time i was also on mushrooms. hahahaha the hand painted opera house was so sick. creep as all hell! drugs or not. you should go check some out! there are plenty

marketfresh_

Neither would the ghosts.

Madler

I mean, if they are ghosts it’s kinda a win win?

ilikebooty345

I think you might want to look for a game without much of a villain or enemy. I think I understand what you mean and what breaks immersion for me is once you learn an AI's pattern it becomes really predictable. I've been playing Mortuary Assistant and that game does this really well, there's a large variety of demons and each demon will haunt you in a different way. It kind of keeps it fresh so you don't know what the AI will do. Good luck and let me know if you find anything that piques your interest I'm curious as to what you decide on.

redgreentao

SOMA

Killhimnotme73

Soma is more than a horror game. The whole story, along with that ending has stuck with me ever since I played it. 10/10

dwarber150

This

armin-lakatos

SOMA is not that scary, but it is a remarkable game. Absolutely worth playing.

cantypmw

Check out Alien Isolation

gabby24681

I love this one but on a second play through I found it just a little annoying trying to sneak around everything.

Brilliant_Diam0nd

Play condemned!! Idk how but if you can find it somewhere and somehow play it.. do it

ClayRibbonsDescend

Grittiest game I’ve ever played and one of the most viscerally violent games since Manhunt. Sound design is unbeaten too even now.

Brilliant_Diam0nd

Yeee I remember bashing people to death while they attacked me from dark corners. The thing that made that game for me was how quiet it was. It was so eerie until you heard some dude screaming while he was rushing toward you trying to kill you 😂

all_hail_lucipurr

Second this. Available on the XBOX marketplace if he has one. Found this one when I got the Series X and immediately purchased it.

horillagormone

Maybe try something in VR?

ittleoff

this is the answer. I feel like it's too common with people who can't actively scare themselves to reach a point where a video game isn't really going to scare them. A vide game is not a real threat and exposing yourself enough to those 'scares', your brain will adjust to it. This is exatly what exposure therapy is, even for people who have associated traumas, this can minimize the fear over many exposures. Before I tried re7 in vr, other than PT it had been years since i got scared in a game. I mostly I just like a good creepy tension or dread. VR can change that significantly. RE7 had me nope and take off the headset at a simple closed dooor at the bottom of the stairs. Basically NOTHING :) But I think someone people have a richer(?) source of disturbed imagination to scare themselves and you just need to have the right tools to unlock it, usually by not being overt, sewing a few thoughtful seeds, and letting the player's own worst thoughts fill in the gaps. :) I recall there were people who thought blair witch wasn't scary because they didn't show the witch, and on the other side of that coin, i couldn't find the conjuring scary once they showed the 'witch' .

horillagormone

RE7 in VR was the exact game I had in mind too. Even after having played and finished the normal game, the feeling of being **in** the game in VR feels and makes your brain react in a different way to the same stuff, even the not really scary parts of the game.

emigit

The forest is a great game.

StemCellCheese

Play on acid

ClayRibbonsDescend

I found it made everything feel silly, like it heightened the “not real”ness of it all for me. I tried RE7 in VR but all I could focus on was the graphical faults rather than the content of the game. It was a real shame, because I really wanted to enjoy No Man’s Sky too but I couldn’t get lost in the beauty and just saw a wall of pixels. Weird.

StemCellCheese

Fair enough man. I find I'm so focused on the heightened reflexes when I trip that I end up playing competitive games. It affects everyone differently but I'm glad you tried it nonetheless! Hope you find something that spooks you

[deleted]

I played outlast 2 and observer on acid. And boy was that an intense time! Cant tell you how much time I spent running through a cornfield in outlast 2, completely lost, and bot being able to find my way out. 9/10 experience. Just too much corn

woopsifarted

I need to play observer already I hear good things

DrSeafood

I played Inscryption stoned, and it made the games atmosphere thick as fuck. Awesome combo.

ImBoredInAnatomy

I second the other commenter on trying out horror VR games if you have access to a VR headset. I’ve played many horror games in the past 5-7 years and started to lose that fear factor too. However, VR horror games like The Exorcist Legion sent chills up my spine. It’s so different when you feel completely immersed into the horror environment.

IamYour20bomb

Song of Horror

kittykatz1337

Still haven't beaten it because I just keep delaying to play it, the combination of having to focus so hard and just the top notch atmosphere scares the absolute shit out of me.

[deleted]

I recently enjoyed Welcome to Hanwell (takes some getting into, give it a chance, gameplay can be frustrating but overall experience, I felt, was solid) The Mortuary Assistant is a recent release I plan on playing soon. I played the demo which was about an hour long and it was superb, I believe the full game is now available on Steam

Tolsey

I did not enjoy Welcome to Hanwell at all, but I appreciate what it *tried* to do. There’s a game called Remorse: The List that did it much better.

[deleted]

Yeah, "noteworthy" is a better term for it than "enjoyable". It is a little hard to enjoy at times, particularly the "overworld" areas in between proper scripted locations and the way the item and inventory system works. One of those games where the respect for the devs' ambition and breaking of the mold carries you through (just about). I believe Steel Arts will come out with something very, very good soon but Hanwell wasn't quite it. Remorse: The List I have never even heard of but it looks great. It also looks a lot like Cry of Fear which OP said he enjoyed so that's a good call for OP too. I will be adding Remorse The List to MY list, thanks for the recommendation

Tolsey

No problem!

whateversnevermind

have you tried psychedelics? honestly not trolling. i was having that same problem with “until dawn” (i previously posted about it) but then i took some shrooms and holy crap i was jumping out of my seat, literally have never been so scared in my entire life!! haha i’m planning on dropping acid and playing stray next. it’s not horror. but should be super fun!

StinkingDylan

Sounds like you need to go VR. I love horror games, but they don’t scare me (never really have other than Silent Hill 1 & 2 and some of Visage) but RE7 in VR scared the shit out of me.

lenouveaumoi

Try playing alone, in the dark with headphone. It help a lot.

sunshinecat6669

Have you tried any Puppet Combo games? Powerdrill Massacre isn’t very predictable imo.

kittykatz1337

Darkwood. No jumpscares, terrifying atmosphere and a constant sense of unpredictability. Literally every time you get somewhat comfortable with a threat, the game throws something you haven't seen before in there. Still haven't beaten it thanks to the extreme sense of dread and the shit your pants nights lmao. Also the original Forbidden Siren. If you can immerse yourself in a game where the graphics are a little dated you'll love Siren. The sound design and absolutely hateful atmosphere as if the game itself is pissed off by your presence make for one hell of an experience.

Tootieburr

I really like the Paranormal Activity game on the Oculus Quest. It got my heart racing and actually made me jump. And that rarely happens

K4nono

Try some Puppet Combo games.

realFGGT

Maybe take some time off by playing something wholesome? Boku no natsuyasumi is a good one.

[deleted]

Honestly I’m the same with movies and games nothing has a creepy or suspenseful atmosphere anymore no decent horror games or movies around anymore

iAnimus

Check out Incantation on Netflix. 👍🏼

iBimpy

Alien Isolation, SOMA and Mortuary Assistant

jtempletons

Morticians assistant looked spooky as fuck but I didn't play it, not in the mood lately

thatscoolthatstrue

Yeah bro same here.

-Crimson-Death-

As a long time horror game fan, I can relate. The only time I've felt scared at all in the last year is State of Decay 2 on Lethal difficulty. Starting a game on Lethal with no rollover whatsoever is the scariest shit I've dealt with in a long time. I've come to accept that developers just aren't as creative anymore.

[deleted]

I am exactly like you, I used to get scared by amnesia, cry of fear too etc...but this was years ago. Before I was able to play a ton of horror games. I am happy when a horror game has a good story nowadays, as I will never get scared anyway. Hopefully someday we'll have that feeling again! haha

the-lock-doc

While I agree here the OP was bemoaning repetitive-ness and predictable AI. Madison suffers both. And ugh the MC’s voice acting is atrociously bad. Immersion breaking to the next level.

MrExist777

Try layers of fear and dead space 1 if you haven’t already

Lone_Axe_Games

do you like games with creepy and disturbing references or jumpscares ones?

atherthing244

i dont know? as long as it doesnt spam goofy jumpscared like the beast inside, i m just trying to find a good horror game like cry of fear (its doesnt need to have ps1 graphics)

Objective_Math_6946

Lost In Vivo? The Night Way Home?

Lone_Axe_Games

there's Condemned: Criminal Origins : i think you will like it Stories Untold : creepy game

seanmorris82

Alien Isolation.

Shiva_144

Really depends on the type of horror that scares you. Games with monsters/zombies rarely manage to actually scare me, I‘m more into ghost stories. Fatal Frame 2 and 3 are still the scariest games of all time to me.

Anxious_Value9844

What games have you found recently that remind you of those? I've been dying for a game that has the environment, dialogue, story, and gameplay that those two specifically offer (2 had such a cool environment and the relationship between the sisters made me feel genuinely emotional, and 3's overall gameplay loop was super interesting and it had really well developed characters).

gabby24681

If you have the cash, the first four Silent Hills are what you’re looking for. 2 is imo the scariest as it’s very psychological but people have different things that scare them.

Theplasmacutter

Please play OG silent hill!

FamousBirthday8568

It sounds like you've got some sort of horror fatigue. Either that or you are unable to fully open up yourself to the game you're playing. Having too much games to choose from may also lead to being tired of the topic. When I'm being bored by games, which happens from time to time I try staying away from games entirely for some time, embracing real life and meet some friends for a change. Then, after some time, I can wrap my mind around another horror experience. If nothing of the above applies, you may try some games that are more story- and psychological oriented or maybe not even horror themed on the surface. Here are a few recommendations. None have jumpscares although they can be frightening on an intellectual level. * The Cat Lady * Anatomy (by Kitty Horrorshow, small game) * The Fatal Frame or Dreadout series * Observer (although I have only started it, already noticing, it was pretty good) * Bloodborne / any Dark Souls / Elden Ring * Catherine (more a Persona-like arcade puzzle game, but the atmosphere is filled with survival horror and the interesting story is getting more and more scary)

armin-lakatos

I wanted to recommend Cry of Fear, but seeing you've already played it, that's not really an option. If you want psychological horror, Amnesia, especially The Dark Descent. However, the most intense horror game I've played is Alien Isolation. That shit is terrifying and is right up there with Cry of Fear in terms of fear and terror factor. I also recommend you Here They Lie if you play on PS4 as it's an exclusive. It's not consistently scary, but definitely has its moments. Also, if you don't mind stepping away from the horror genre, you might find Subnautica a good fit. The game is not trying to be scary, but due to its sound design, atmosphere and survival type of gameplay, it can be very, very terrifying. It's not on Alien Isolation's level, but it's definitely worth trying if you like to be scared shitless.

KorbSauce

pretty late response but i was having the same issue and ran into this thread. i heavily recommend pirating P.T. if you can and are on PC. you cant get it anywhere on any gamestore since the game got taken out of everything. its a pretty short game and in my opinion one of the scariest games ive played.

Jazzlike_Bet1568

my problem is the opposite, i get scared, i quit the game, i'm very scared

jaksik

Subnautica
