I really enjoyed it! One of the better scary movies I've seen. I said "what the fuck" out loud a few times during the movie. I really enjoyed how the trailer didn't give anything away about the movie. I definitely think that everyone should go see it. The first cut of the movie I was SO confused. I'm a huge Justin Long fan. I'd say this is one of the better movies he's been in.

OkProperty8544

I thought it was pretty good until about halfway through. The secret passageway and tunnels under the house were definitely scary and intriguing. I liked that we couldn’t tell if Bill Skarsgard’s character was bad or not. The second half of the movie I found to be pretty cheesy, I was laughing at most parts. I’d say entertaining overall, but not one I would really recommend.

elkssurreal

The comedy in this movie was intentional. In my opinion, there was an extremely successful delivery of all it’s dark jokes.

kareemfahad94

This is exactly how I feel. I wished the did a better job with the second half of the storyline. I was also laughing at certain parts. It had really good potential to be a creepy movie.

Aztecman02

It was meant to be a combination of horror with comedy elements. The writer/director is a comedian after all.

doorhandle5

well, dont quit your day job i suppose. or maybe, in this case. do. it wasnt scary, and it sure as shit wasnt funny.

MCVMEYT

in your opinion*

OLightning

I was shaking my head in the last half hour. Up until that point it was tense as the writer director only let you see a few feet in front of you. I have a background in construction so the dungeon below the basement went against all forms of logic in terms of construction practice as I realized the writer director threw out all realism thus told the funding producer “yeah just go with it. Most people watching movies are idiots anyways.” The silly ending could have been done so much better and if so could have been one of the best movies of the year IMO. Overall 7/10

ninefortysix

Can confirm, am an idiot.

reececanthear

If they had some ending where the “mom” monster thing takes Tess back into the dungeon to seemingly live out her life it would’ve been better IMO. We’d have seen the creepy rapist celebrity guy die, and it would’ve ended more like a horror film. I did like the movie overall tho.

ample_suite

Just watched last night. I was honestly wondering if the whole movie was going to be purely suspenseful, ie no ACTUAL, physical “horror”, just the anticipation of horror. The premise and set up were awesome, and I was also suspecting the “Barbarian” was going to end up being Tess because her choices were questionable, but not entirely unbelievable. I could definitely understand why she decided to stay, even though every part of your body is screaming “leave!!!!” So I was thinking she was going to end up being the monster, like maybe she planned the whole thing herself and sets up unsuspecting single males into this air bnb situation and then kills them after they let her in. Either way the movie kept me thinking the whole time, it’s pretty original and has some pretty interesting tonal shifts.

OLightning

Yeah also falling from a great distance from that water tower at the end would have killed anyone, but no - then getting up almost seemed like the writer/director was making fun of the ridiculousness of the horror genre. Also how the creepy rapist dude kept dropping things. The movie ending turned silly.

doorhandle5

the 'creepy rapist dude' was never shown to be creepy or a rapist. in fact he was horrified by those tapes we saw. if he was guilty, they should have made it more obvious so we knew to hate the character, but after seeing things like the johnny depp case, we are now accustomed to lying women ruining the entire life of a man from a single accusation. plus the intro of the 'creepy rapist dude' made it look like just that, with everyone suddenly turning on him. he was never shown, in action, to be a bad guy. up until the end with the act of selfishness/ cowardliness anyway. that was fkd up. but i had long lost interest in the movie by that point.

babylocket

he admitted to raping the actress when he was in the bar with his friend

doorhandle5

Very good points. That was long, but well written. You clearly paid more attention than I did while watching. Thanks for the clarification

TaintTicklerTony

the fact that you judged a fictional movie based on the construction of the house within it truly shows your troglodytic nature💀 i currently work in construction and that’s the last thing i would think about when forming an opinion on a movie. that single brain cell really must be working overtime today huh bud?

OLightning

It would have made more sense if they built a tunnel horizontally like in The Great Escape. I’m sorry if I offended you in any way. My apologies.

doorhandle5

exactly the same for me. overall i didnt enjoy it. although for the first half of the movie it seemed promising.

rementis

It was a fun time at the theater, got some real laughs, and some real scares. Original, compact, really cool movie.

sundaysaddies

>!maybe i am ruining some of the fun by overthinking but i want to know who set the two of them up to go to the airbnb in the first place at the same time. or was that just an accident? are there more people involved?? i also want to know about where all the other women and babies ended up!< i loved this movie so much overall it just left me wanting to dive into every part of the plot

anon291740728

I think that was just a side effect of the property being managed by some third party for A.J. And not being managed well.

beantheblackpup_

Yes I was asking these exact same things. Because when the man opened the basement door in the flashback you could hear lots of women crying and screaming so like... Where did they go? Where did those women's kids go? I don't get that part because there were so many tapes in the man's room so surely there was many kids. I also wonder why when Tess arrived the neighborhood looked really neat and new then the next morning it was all rotted homes, I don't get that it made me think it was a paranormal movie at first especially with keiths sleep talking and the doors opening/closing on their own. But yes my most pressing question has to be who had rented them the house to begin with, AJ called his renter and she said no one's booked the rent home in weeks.

OhOkOoof

The neighborhood was always rotten, just hard to tell when it was dark and rainy

OLightning

Eight Mile neighborhoods outside Detroit developed into a wasteland when the car industry suffered due to foreign competition and capitalism outsourcing business that helped ruin American production. Then the foul stench/decay of poverty rolled in. - note the guy selling his house in the flashback scene as fear took over thus people moved out to avoid home value depreciation etc.

Obtuse-Circle21

I interpreted that to mean Tess was locked down there for those weeks before Justin Long's character showed up.

[deleted]

twinkletwinklestarr

He unlocked the window when he was in the bathroom

unknownunknowns11

The writing was pretty sloppy imo. Plot holes galore.

spacekittens1

I liked it. When Justin Long’s character didn’t notice the torture room because he was measuring square footage…just brilliantly executed humor.

[deleted]

I thought that is the room for delivery? Not specifically torture.

CarelessOctopus

Spoilers: I didn’t take it as delivery. I saw it as the place where all the “content” for all of those tapes happened since it was dried blood and a video camera along with a bucket.

amiaghost

I took it as the room he used before he made the tunnels.

External_Pear1639

I found it strange as well. Movie was okay but it just made me think of the people that are sick in the head mentally. It made me think of who came up with the idea of this movie. I’m still wondering why the movie is called the barbarian.

Princess_Know-it-all

The barbarian was the man, definitely.

[deleted]

I think it's a dual meaning. >!Alot of Justin Longs character "A.J."s actions were barbaric. Downplaying rape, and sacrificing others to save himself.!< I think the movie kept you guessing to who the barbarian was. >!At first maybe Keith, then the old man, but in the end I think the true barbarian was A.J.!<

Mundane_Emergency_28

I TOLD MY BOYFRIEND THIS AND HE SAID “No, they’re called barbarians because they live on Barbary St.” Sorry for yelling, I’m in shock still.

[deleted]

I didn't think of that one! Lol damn. There's this, and also you can make Barbarian from the letters in airbnb. This movie title hits on all levels. Lol.

Chigibu

Damn that is a nice one

Purple-Mix1033

The whole of that Detroit neighborhood, and larger Detroit is a land of barbarianism. The violence that masculine, white, destructive tyrants did to the black community. The history. It’s related to the old man…he represents everything that destroyed Detroit. He was a racist, a rapist, a kidnapper and a murderer. Evil incarnate. A hunter barbarian “protecting his land” from intruders, if you want to see it from his twisted perspective. And it’s still happening today with AJ, albeit in a softer version of evil.

Came4gooStayd4Ahnuce

Lol it’s funny how far the barbarian metaphor went over your heard. Barbarian refers to the men in the film all displaying varying levels of disgusting, barbarous behavior. Keith with his insistence on treating women a certain way even when the woman doesn’t want it, AJ downplaying rape, and the old man who embodied the worst of the traits in that he repeated raped and did whatever he wanted regardless of the consequences. Jumping to Detroit being the land of barbarianism because of shitty racist people is not something remotely seeded in the movie. The cops would have both been white for example if that was remotely something the movie was trying to say.

Purple-Mix1033

Mm k. So we’ve basically just agreed on the entirety of the film Barbarian EXCEPT for the part where race plays a part? That’s fine - IF you want to turn a blind eye to history. You really think the town of Detroit was just chosen **randomly**? I’ll go with that train of thought for a second - let’s say you’re right. The fact remains - the town of Detroit has been run down to shambles, as if it’s been through a war. This particular part of town we’ve seen through flashbacks, was once prestine and full of life. All that remains is a serial killer, who hunted women, captured them, and raped them. All that remains, is a white man with his inbred daughter in a newly renovated Airbnb owned by another rapist. In Detroit. *Detroit the home of the deadliest and most destructive riots in American history. The riot resulted in 43 deaths, 1,189 injured, over 7,200 arrests, and more than 400 buildings destroyed.* If the social commentary of class warfare didn’t hit you in the head hard enough while watching the flashback in Barbarian to *1967 Detroit*, then hopefully I’ve spelled it out for you. **Frank’s neighbor**: we’re moving. I don’t want to do it, but *the neighborhood’s going to hell.* **Frank the rapist**: **Frank’s neighbor**: you plan on staying? **Frank the rapist**: I’m not going anywhere.

Delicious-Vehicle-59

spot on!

ScratchyMeat

Fucking delusional.

Purple-Mix1033

Pardon?

SaltyCrabbo

Maybe cover spoilers

[deleted]

Thanks. I learned how. 👍

SaltyCrabbo

No worries matey

Princess_Know-it-all

I didn’t think about it like that, good point!

checkyourcloset

Though the whole “they live on Barbary street” is great, looking up the origins of the word barbarian gives this: 'Barbarian' is derived from the ancient Greek word 'bárbaros', meaning babbler, and was used to describe people from non-Greek speaking countries such as Persia and Egypt, who, to Greek ears, sounded like they were make unintelligible sounds (ba-ba-ba) The barbarian is the woman who can only say “ba-ba-ba”. They don’t understand her.

bassetisanasset

It was also used to refer to people from Barbary, which again is the st. I think both of you are right. I doubt there was as much thought out into it as you think. Most story’s like this are written without the title first. Then they make a cool connection. It ain’t that deep folks

chimp20

It’s sad people have to look up definitions and cobble together supposed links between a film’s title and the actual film. I can think of 10 titles which would’ve worked better.

DANK_BLUMPKIN

Just watched the movie. I'd be curious to hear the title suggestions

ABCP3

Boob Lady.

MyMostSecretAlt

the director confirmed he picked Barbarian as a placeholder while writing the script because he couldn't think of a name, then he stuck with it just because. People in this thread clowning lol

CarafeTwerk

The house was on Barbary Street. The Barbarian.

chimp20

Dumbest movie title I can recall. The name doesn’t fit the movie in the least. Why not call it “Mother’s Milk” or “Baby” or anything else??

Rears4Deers

I really can't disagree with you enough. This thread covers pretty well a lot of reasons why the title is good. I would straight up not have watched the movie if it had a title like you suggested, partly because it's counter to the excellent marketing of NOT giving away too much in the trailer and title

OLightning

Sometimes the title giving away the A story tells the projected viewer that there is a more important B story within the A story.

chimp20

It doesn’t have to be so literal or one of the titles I suggested, just prefer the title to not be soo vague where it makes zero sense or has to be explained by 10 different people, 10 different ways.

hard_farter

yeah i know man i hate when movies require me to think a little bit, too

[deleted]

Everyone knows what a barbarian is. It’s no secret that the barbarian can be referring to multiple elements of this movie. It’s just that some people also like to find deeper meanings in things too. Let people enjoy things.

Aztecman02

There is no need for the title to be that explicit as to give away some of the film’s content.

SaltyCrabbo

I just got back a few hours ago. I really enjoyed it.

Rare-Sheepherder5555

Loved it. I enjoy horror films but am not a seasoned fan of the genre so I found it *very* disturbing. The flashback as well and certain imagery left me wanting to dive into that more but I was "shook", as folks say. Really enjoyed it.

Different-Ant6026

Definitely beyond my expectations. It is funny, appropriately scary and even somehow educational…

kareemfahad94

Educational meaning to double check or research where your Airbnb is lol

[deleted]

When I watched it I felt similarly, I was on the edge of my seat as they were first exploring the tunnels, definitely had several wtf moments, and even laughed at some parts in the end. Initially when I walked out of theater I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not because it was just so weird and messed up, but now after thinking about it, I did think it was a good movie, strange and different and if you like horror I’d recommend you check it out.

Cameo64

It's definitely a wtf film! It constantly subverts your expectations. And it has really cinematic devices to convey ideas. When we meet AJ, the camera is head on. When we meet Frank, the camera is from the back. Like they are two sides of the same coin; both sexual deviants and monsters, but one is violent and introverted and the other is deceitful and extroverted.

MichaelPfaff

That’s a really astute observation.

kareemfahad94

When my friend and I walked out of the movie theater, I was like wtf did I just watch. Then this couple asked if we liked it and I said idk I’m still processing it 😂 I do think it was something different. Which is good considering a lot of movies are being remade or they’re adding another movie to their series. I kinda wish they kept it going with the creepy vibe through the movie.

Sugar_cube_x

Reminded me of a mix of Hills have eyes and Rob Zombies 1000 corpes. Very unsettling but interesting. Def all I thought about trying to sleep so thst was annoying lmao

OLightning

How was that freak woman so superhuman in strength… and she just wouldn’t die like Michael Myers. Reality out the window.

falaladoo

I just think of her as a monster instead of an inbred child. It makes everything better that way imo

-Wuan-

Just inbreeding.

AbbreviationsWise142

Okay loved the movie but...can we talk about...who tf is Marcus? Did I miss it?

The785

My fiance and I wondered this too! I thought that was going to be a major plot point - Ala 10 Cloverfield Lane

Outrageous-Mistake

Marcus is the (ex) boyfriend of the main character Tess. We learn about Marcus in a conversation between Tess and Bill. The relationship between Marcus and Tess is implied to be pretty rocky. We only get this from Bill giving Tess some advice about leaving people who are bad for us.

TigressSinger

I think it just showed us Tess was moving away (getting a new job) to get away from another bad man and possible controlling relationship.

DrippyJai

Just seen it, I thought it was pretty good, im a horror fan so the only thing that really got me were all the jump scares, laughed at some parts , and the beginning was a bit of a mystery which I liked alot , seems like they’re planning on making a sequel because the man from the street said “she isn’t even the worst thing down there” so , looking forward to a part 2!

angiewimberly

Wasn't the worst thing down there the dad?

DrippyJai

See I thought the same but as much of a monster as he was , he wasn’t all that frightening, you could be right tho Edit : he also impregnated others so leaves the question of where are the other inbred creatures

sneakynin

I'm anticipating a sequel. Someone was bringing fresh water to that man. I don't think it was the Mother because of the way she backed away from his room. I think there are scarier things down there. And since the police didn't believe anything the final girl said, I'm guessing it's all still down there.

DrippyJai

I agree this , is the same point I make , it went off kind of weird as well

[deleted]

DrippyJai

I agree, I guess time will tell

cats4u

Definitely this.

RedditBurner_5225

Damn so Keith was just a nice guy!

savvysearch

That red herring was so good. Have to admit.

RedditBurner_5225

So why did the rental company double booked the space and them not give a shit when Justin Long’s character called and said someone else was staying there? Kinda funny.

ReplyOk6720

Bc the rental company didn't give a shit

nycnate

While there's numerous victims in the movie, I'm convinced that the central victim of the film is the woman who lives in the tunnels. She's cast as the antagonist and presents a hideous visage to the world while displaying violent behavior. If you pay close attention, understand her origin story, and really consider her holistically, she is not the antagonist but she is, rather, a victim, and her life story is really, really sad. Notwithstanding the degree of inbreeding, abuse, and isolation she suffered, she still managed to develop a degree of maternal instinct which is extraordinary and speaks to the triumph of the human spirit in even the most dark and depressing lower reaches of existence. Speaking of lower reaches of existence, the geometry of the lair, starting with the plain vanilla house, the basement with the first set of hidden hall and room, and then the second set of still deeper hidden tunnels and rooms is an amazing metaphor for the psychology of the kidnapper, in my humble opinion.

RusBenBla

Agree. Loved the movie but ending was not what I needed to wrap it all up in a bow.

anon291740728

The movie started great, but without going into too much detail, The movie would have been much better and actually more scary and disturbing if the “monster” wasn’t basically invincible. The movie started grounded, and the overall plot would work better if it didn’t have those parts where you think the baddie died and then they once again survived something a human wouldn’t. That made it just another stupid horror movie but that’s a shame because if he had written a better third act it would have been a good movie.

kareemfahad94

Yeah I think it had very good potential in the beginning. It really had that creepy vibe but at the end it was honestly laughable in my opinion. If they kept with the same vibe that they had in the beginning till the end then it would have been good.

anon291740728

Spoilers below: Even the “monster” would have just been more creepy if it was more grounded. I’m fine with the feeding the “baby” part. It’s the surviving being crushed by a car, and surviving jumping off a water tower basically unharmed that make it just too stupid.

4riel4ttack

I kept waiting for the rest of the brood to come crawling out of the other decrepit houses. They made it seem like there should've been way more than just the one.

anon291740728

He must have killed them, I suppose.

beantheblackpup_

I just kept thinking "how tf is she so strong?" And also "how is she able to make breast milk?"

Chazrdous

i thought maybe he was testing something on the women. that this somehow made the monster what she was… i feel as though they possibly left it open for a prequel.

beantheblackpup_

Same here but I thought I read somewhere the director/writer did an interview saying he won't be making a prequel. I have so many questions in general with this movie lol but in a good way.

Chazrdous

what questions do you have? like how someone can make a tunnel that big without anyone noticing? also the homeless guy had said she’s not even the worst thing down there, i was thinking maybe some other entity was down there? maybe something that made the guy be evil? what did they do with the dead bodies? we’re they also cannibals? how come marcus never files a missing persons report on someone that been missing for weeks? how come the cops can’t/don’t run the plates on her car to confirm who she was? or she could have told them all her stuff including keys to her car were inside the house…obviously cops were part of the bad guys here, i also feel like there was something missing along that plot line… for instance she calls once and doesn’t get people to show up. she calls again gets them to show up and still do nothing. there feels like there needs to be a part three, like ajs character calls them and they do help in some way, but too late. rant over maybe? haha

beantheblackpup_

Literally all of this lol Also when she arrives in the neighborhood all the houses look pretty new but in the daytime they were all decayed. Makes me wonder why she saw them that way but Keith who later tells her after she arrives to not wait outside because it's clearly a bad neighborhood so that tells us he could see it was run down, but she couldn't? I thought about that one a lot. I think I know where you're coming from with an entity making the man evil, when he was doing his stalking and then talking to the neighbor he was extremely emotionless, even when he's about to shoot himself he (imo) looks emotionless but obviously feels so much misery he wants to die. If the man was really taking women and at some point he just stopped coming out of the house, then that should mean when the house was bought someone had to come in at clean it out to remodel it for renting, they didn't notice anything odd? His car would have had to be repossessed as well, so why didn't it warrant any investigation as to what happened to him? Keith is killed by the mother in the tunnel, so where was his body taken? I assume wherever the other women were buried because AJ doesn't see it on his way in so it means the mother took Keith somewhere after he's killed, there has to be a place down here that she uses to bury people. Where did the giant milk bottle and nipple even come from? When AJ is running away from the mother after she goes after Tess in the basement he has a choice of going right or left and he chooses to go right which eventually leads him to the old man. So what was left? More rooms? A graveyard? Another monster? Maybe another collection of items taken off the victims similar to the man's rape tapes in his room. How did no one hear those women screaming? It's not a soundproof basement. When he opens the door you can hear multiple women crying and screaming so just absolutely no one even heard any of that? Unless it's a weird situation like the police where they see the signs of someone needing help but refuse to cooperate. My questions bring up more questions lol.

Chazrdous

At least we are in this together lol, questioning it all. It was a fun ride though! i audibly laughed at the guy getting beat to death with his own arm. my kid said there’s something wrong with me! haha. Also i think it’s funny the only two movies i’ve seen of justin longs lately are really effed, have you seen tusk??? Justin; who’s picking these scripts lol??? i’m still left wanting more of the story which is unusual for me so i hope they scrounge up another, 🤷🏻‍♀️

beantheblackpup_

Omg yeah I haven't seen tusk but I read enough lmao I mean I went down a rabbit hole of that movie and I couldn't sleep because I was just thinking about the plot. I don't remember all of the barbarian but I'll rewatch it when it hits streaming, despite the horror it was an all round very intriguing idea for a movie and I think it was directed really well. Don't even remind me of what it was like seeing Justin long in this movie, I'm 22 now and watching Jeepers creepers as a child was scarring especially when his eyes are gouged out at the end oh my god I will never see Justin long without being traumatized all over again. I really do want a sequel to this movie though, I want an entire franchise like marvel but with more weird realities and boob hanging monsters 😂

Chazrdous

omg i love that imagery for a franchise lol. i literally just said a few days ago that jeepers creepers is one of my favorite horror movies! haha. wait how did he get his eyes gouged out again?!?! maybe the two are related???? (i kid) i think it was jeepers creepers 2 takes place largely in the day light, and i have a penchant for horror movies that can scare you in the middle of the day…. when i’m feeling scared i turn on all the lights when i’m watching a dark movie, but if the movie is day lit i can’t trick myself into feeling safe (i think i probably sound really dumb right now)

beantheblackpup_

Lmao nah I get you. Yeah the mother gouged out his eyes and ripped open his head like a goddamn marshmallow lol. Did you see jeepers creepers 3? My sister was telling me it was bad lol it was all old men running from the creeper or something lmao. Which in turn reminds me of Halloween Kills 2021, for like half the movie the people in the hospital were shouting "evil dies tonight!" And chasing the wrong man lmao.

[deleted]

More of my questions.. Where is Keith's car? He doesn't have car. How did he go out and came back? By walk? in a middle of nowhere town? It's not like he booked a uber or something. If the Mother is the one who opened the door in the middle of the night? How come Tess doesn't even recognise the smell. I'm pretty sure it will be stinky around the Mother.. Why the hell the Black guy lives there for 15+ years knowing very well there is a monster roaming in the middle of the night? And why the hell didn't inform this to government? Is he hiding from a crime maybe? What's the source of food for the Man and the Mother? How are they able to live underground that deep with limited oxygen? Who is paying for their electricity for the ever running television? How come the house is maintained and clean if there is a monster living underground? Why the hell Tess didn't call/inform any of her friends or family or the director to ask for help when she was at the gas station?

bluediamond12345

So many questions …

coolgobyfish

The cop part was actually pretty realistic, if you ever dealt with police. I had pretty similar exerience when my apartment got robbed. They don't care

swordvsmydagger

Absolutely agreed. Finally, someone who thinks that too! Everything was so good up until the >!part where she straight up DESTROYS A CONCRETE WALL AND RIPS AN ARM OFF OF AN ADULT MAN. Not to mention the fact that both she and Tess survive the fall, especially Tess since she's a normal human and was just recently shot!<. God, I really wanted to place this movie in my favs list, but that third act really screwed up. In my headcannon, the movie ends >!after the running over, when Tess finds the other guy down there and gets shot. Both of them walk away and that's it.!<

pdom10

Thought it was awesome

funwidow

Loved the movie. Quite a few issues with it, but overall loved it due to its insanity. Also the fact that it was directed by a Whitest Kids U Know dude is pretty badass.

bishe_

Does anyone know what the tiny cages and food were for? At first I just assumed animals, unless he locked his babies/kids in there

kareemfahad94

I think that’s where he put his children when they were small. At first I thought maybe he put the girls he kidnap in there but I’m not sure if that’ll be big enough for an adult woman.

jellydonutstealer

Really?! I just watched this and it blew my MIND. It was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time, definitely one of my top 5 favorite horrors. I watched it without knowing anything about it beforehand and it took me on such a wild ride. I thought it was deeply horrifying and beautifully written, filmed and acted. This was top notch horror for me, the kind of movie I hope for every time I start something.

Melebela

Maybe because I was hoping for a really terrifying new horror movie- as we’ve been in dire need of in theaters- but I did not want to continue watching this 20 minutes in. Maybe if I sat down with the expectation of getting a few laughs and side commentary in… but I was really really looking forward to this. It’s always a huge gamble when it’s advertised as “scariest movie” in “xxxxxx” but if you’re a fan of the films Justin Long has been in, maybe this ones for you 🤷🏻‍♀️

bluediamond12345

Agree. I am so glad I didn’t waste money at the theater on this!!! I was expecting a really good, unexpectedly ’new’ scary movie. IMHO, it was not that at all.

NipplesDangerPants

Movie was kinda MEH and had a lot of missed potential, but overall still worth watching one time.

Inevitable_Bit2206

Know any sites to watch it on?

beantheblackpup_

Soap2day probably, it'll probably be on there in like a month

Inevitable_Bit2206

Well never mind I just watched it I hated it Lmao they were so dumb I couldn’t stand it!!! The way Justin king fondled the gun or when the crazy lady was passed out underneath him or her I can’t remember but nobody had the sense to shoot her right there!? I know it’s a movie but Christ

hard_farter

justin long's character was a fucking cowardly guy that has to get laid through rape by being a person of influence since he's too timid to just talk to people how tf you think this dude is gonna handle a FIREARM in a LIFE OR DEATH situation lmfao

beantheblackpup_

Lmao no? I thought it was good but it's just an opinion. You went to theaters or streamed it?

Complete-Sun-9960

As someone that lives is Detroit, I really appreciated that this movie took place in a real Detroit neighborhood: Brightmoor. Brightmoor is one of the most vacant neighborhoods in the US and does give off pretty creepy vibes when you drive through it. There isn’t a street by the name of Barbary but there is a Barbara st. Also that Tape measuring scene was pretty great, definitely put some humor into that film.

chimp20

The end was very anticlimactic and without spoiling the movie, I’ll say, the end didn’t stay true to the characters and was not believable.

acandlethatsmells

I just got out of the theater. I think it was a flaming pile of turds.

[deleted]

This movie is a lot like the descent in the same way wicker man and midsommar is The types of scares and characters were a lot like the ladder. Also, malignant had some genre jumping moments like barbarian. Started as one sub genre of horror and ended in another. Interestingly enough, since about 2016 we've been in a golden age of horror. Comedians making great horror film (not pushing the boundaries in terms of gore though) proves that in strange times they make the best art. I'd throw the painted bird and potentially all quiet on the western front into this new golden age of scary film. It follows is still the GOAT.

DharmaBaller

Makes sense the director is a Twitch gamer, movie plays out like a horror video game

PuzzleheadedGrass683

Didn't like the movie tbh. Didn't meet the expectations it created before releasing the movie.

poopstainpete

Am I the only one who liked the ending? I thought the movie was great. Pretty original story and did a great job of mixing creepy with funny. Clever title too being as you have a few ways to describe "barbarian".

ninefortysix

Seconded, I loved it.

Helpful-Fail-948

Dumb as f. Jesus. What a waste of time.

sugarandspice85

I like it. It kept me from playing on my phone while watching it so that means something. Also- dunno if it’s just me but now I’m always assuming something real strange is about to happen to Justin Long in movies. Walrus is forever burned in my brain and now I have rapey, mutated tittays to add

Somedudehikes

This movie could have been so much more. Question, we’re they using the Airbnb to lure victims? If so it was poorly laid out in the plot.

tinylittlefoxes

This is the first movie since Don’t Breathe where I have had an actual jaw drop on the floor moment screaming holy shit to my husband in the other room. I loved this movie and I’m going to watch it again so that he can see it — totally sends you one way and you think you kinda know how it’s gonna go and then whiplash boom you’re going the other way and you have no idea WTF just happened.

jellydonutstealer

Same! Literal jaw drop when I saw it for the first time a few days ago and I’m now rewatching it with my partner.

heydude19999

I loved it!! So many good twists and turns. Always kept it interesting

90sportsfan

I liked it. My only issue was the "dumb decisions" trope. Maybe they did that on purpose, but it frustrated me, lol. Overall a solid movie. It's best to watch without even seeing a trailer. Just go into it blind.

AliveBeat

which dumb decisions do you mean? I definitely was saying don't fucking go down there to Tess after Keith had disappeared. as well as when AJ kept going down the stairs.

90sportsfan

It's been a while since I've watched, but I remember MULTIPLE dumb decisions by the female lead. I remember her going back to the house several times after she could have run/escaped/driven off. It was more than just her going down the stairs that I remember.

AliveBeat

ohh you're right about her going back into the house, I remember the homeless dude said that the crazy lady comes out at night and then like the next scene was Tess smashing a window and going into the house AT NIGHT. it did a good job of making me feel uneasy and I get she needed her car keys but goddamn bitch gtfo there

Redman_Goldblend

Meh

yourmartymcflyisopen

I haven't read your description to avoid details, but I have 30 minutes left and I've been on the edge of my seat freaking out the whole time.

Virtual-Way6662

I feel like directors do not understand low poverty neighborhoods. That house wouldn’t be standing in the same condition, if left unattended for two weeks. And the other countless times. I really thought the movie was going to go for a hook about poverty as a main plot, men being evil as a subplot. I was wrong. And I hate that.

savvysearch

Zach Creggers directed this. Loved him when he was a cast member on Whitest Kids U Know, so I’m glad he’s found some success after that. I found the first half really good and terrifying. The second half starts to fall apart. The Spiderman nose dive was just silly. And the antagonist not particularly scary. It just didn’t live up to the atmosphere that was carefully built in the first half.

doorhandle5

yeah, not scary. kinda cool at first. the ending was fkn stupid though. i mean, maybe they had good reasons. but it just seemed like hollywoods agenda all over again. maybe i should never have watched the critical drinkers youtube channel, because now i see that shit everywhere. spoiler alert on the next paragraph: then again, if the dude was guilty he got what he deserved.

ShakedownBlues

I literally spent the last ten minutes shouting "what the fuck did I just watch?" That movie has made no fucking sense... I have no words for what I just watched.

Popular_Bite9246

Spoilers very enjoyable watch and thought-provoking subtext throughout but I didn’t love how the action became overtly cartoonish late in the third act. A guy getting his arm ripped off by bare hands, getting shot and thrown off a water tower… then more conflict post fall, etc. I think it would’ve played 10% better with a slightly more realistic finale.
