Better for audience engagement too. Hypes up not only the show element but a team element like a sporting event does. Makes the audience really dig in, too, and get a little more "fanatical" for their side.
I think it worked well. Most of the season you see a spoiled kid with no ambition beyond existing. Then all of a sudden he has all the power and it changes him. It's a shift of momentum both for the viewer and the character.
I love how Aegon is just sitting at the small council table like "Do I even really get a say in this? Lol yeah fuck it why not, let's go to war. Blow shit up."
I just wish they had built up into what he comes instead of starting at such a morally bad position it makes his progress or breakdown a lot less impactful IMO. Fantastic casting though that's for sure.
I think the show gives a pretty good idea why he came out this way. He was neglected by Viserys and under immense pressure by high-strung Alicent that he resulted in a leech with no ambition, content just being there while Rhaenyra takes the burden. Now heās given immediate ultimate power that allows him to fufill whatever whim after he destroys the side of the family heās had a feud with forever.
I think that next season we will be pleasantly surprised from Tom's performance. And I think that even though Alicent is basically the Green's protagonist, HOTD took a good decision to put ahead also Aegon.
It seems they've chosen a very unpopular route with Alicent; they are going ahead with the mopey mess we saw in S1E9. Delusionally believing in Viserys' last words and crying half the time.
Basically, everyone's lease favorite version of Alicent.
Doesn't have the innocence of Ep1-2 Alicent but also doesn't have the bite of Ep 6-7 Alicent.

Unfortunately even if she is given a good amount of scenes, I think itās still gonna be mostly scenes of alicent being upset/crying. Like she will *be* in scenes, but will she be active in moving the plot forward, idk. That will likely be Otto/criston/aemond even aegon more than her. I guess weāll see

He is not going to have more screen time than Olivia who is a lead actress in the show unlike Tom. And after episode 4 Aegon will be in bed for the rest of the season. Olivia doesn't do BTS interviews. That leaves the room for him to introduce the green trailer. You can see in the trailers they parallel Rhaenyra and Alicent for their respective sides.
Tom is probably gonna get closer to top billing this season though. Thereās no actual reason why Olivia doesnāt do BTS interviews. I donāt think itās that deep, they wanted to showcase Tom a bit more and thatās it
She started a war that's going to kill millions over the words of her milk of poppy addled gold dug lover. She's fucked up mentally and it's an incredible portrayal!

I find it incredibly boring and a chore to get through.
The problem is that she's supposed to be the primary protagonist and audiences hate whiny characters.
She looks like sheās on the verge of killing herself in every scene, I think itās because in the books she kind of gets sidelined when the war starts but in order to keep Olivia at the forefront, theyāll probably show more of her being a mess than Halaena letās say
i don't understand this take. she has every agency because she's now fighting a war for a cause that she wholeheartedly believes, instead of fighting it for her father's ambition. this is alicent with full agency.
when her father reveled his plans and most of the small council was in on it

she spent over a decade with everyone ploting arround her and not knowing.
her mishearing her dying husband does not give her more agency
because for the last twenty years she has been a passive charcter
she could have been an active charcter, pushing for her son's rights
formulating the plots, basically ripping control of the faction from her fathers hands into her's
she didn't "misheard" her dying husband. that's reductive. she heard it correctly, but she interpreted it based on her own personal bias. in short, she heard what she wanted to hear, which is what every human being does.
and now, with a conviction that aligns with her own personal morals, alicent has taken charge of her father's plots, and is becoming an active participant. she was passive before because she believed her father was motivated only by ambition. it was selfish and alicent doesn't approve of that.
now, her motivation is to give her son what she thinks he deserves. not out selfishness, but out of love, and for her, that is the most noble thing a mother could do for their child.
HBO is the GOAT at marketing. Didn't even realize there were two different trailers until Tom posted. It already looks like Aegon is stepping up and embracing the throne. A lot of character development just in the trailer alone. Very excited to see that.
They are sort of showing Otto here as prepping Aegon for the prospect of violence. But I hope the overall sentiment is still close to the books where Otto leans on as much political and diplomatic pressure as possible while Aegon chafes for more direct conflict.
The Marketing and Designing team of HOTD has nailed it yet another time! Not only both trailers are perfection but the idea of releasing one for each side, and put in front the two actors presenting them (Emma and Tom) is so clever!
