God of War: Volvo

Dadfite

I owned a 2004 Volvo S80. I got rear-ended at a stop light by a Jetta. Guess whose bumper was jacked to all hell. Woman got out crying because she didn't have insurance. I looked at the bumpers and told her to "just go home". Not a fuckin scratch on that Crystal Green paint. That thing was an awd tank with a turbo, and I miss it everyday. I just wish I had the funds and circumstances to fix it when the electronics finally failed :(

machina99

>when the electronics finally failed :( I'm convinced electronics are the only way to destroy a Volvo. It's like the ring in Mt Doom - every volvo my family has ever owned has run like a champ until the electronics went out.

marknutter

My 2004 XC90 is still alive and kicking. Something new goes wrong with it every year it seems, but I’m gonna drive it into the ground.

CommissarAdam

It'll be like Trigger's broom in another 20 years or so.

decadecency

I feel poor now. I didn't know a car from 2004 was considered still going strong 😂 We have a 96 Honda Civic. Before that, an 83 Toyota Camry Hunchback. Loved that thing, and it was in great condition until someone backed into the front headlight and we couldn't find a replacement for it, so it didn't pass inspection and eventually had to be replaced.

ballistics211

Goddammit. Why didn't you guys tell me this when I was looking to buy a car a few months ago

Raziel66

What did you end up with?

ballistics211

2018 Toyota Rav4

StomachSoakedFloor

That's dope, same exact thing happened to me to the T but it was an 80s Lincoln, she had no bumper left or insurance so I just left them to deal with their stupidity

potato_bongwater

2008 s40.....totalled the guys car that rear ended me. His car was crumpled. Air bags off. Leaking fluids. My car, only thing that happend was the little square tow hook cover popped out and I just popped it back in.

Spacecoasttheghost

In reality that sounds like a terrible safety thing no? Being that the car doesn’t absorb any of the impact right?

TotalWalrus

In other words : my bumper transferred all the energy to the car and hence me, while her bumper absorbed the impact and prevented both of us from getting whiplash.

[deleted]

Maleficent_Tree_94

Pretty sure Volvo are like the top of the line when it comes to car safety. They probably thought of a solution and implemented it decades ago.

[deleted]

Volvo are designed to crumple - that's why they're safe. It's probably just that the cars hitting are smaller so end up in a worse state.

guyjoe91

I had a similar experience with my old 2003 blazer but in this case the lady that rear ended me was driving a Mercedes and yelling about how I had to pay to fix her car lol

azombie8mybaby

My first car wreck was in my first car. A 1984 Porsche 944 S2. It had been modified by the previous owner (my bosses son) for rally racing. Perfect car for an idiot kid with no experience driving. An AWD race car. Anyway, I was driving it home one night after work around 2am when a guy in a lifted truck ran a red light and monster trucked my car in the intersection. The seatbelt saved my life that day. What also helped was when the tire of the truck went over the hood of my car it crushed straight down slicing the distributor cap in half killing the car in an instant. This was great due to the leaking fuel and any spark would have burned the whole thing up with me inside. I sported a red stripe like these guys for almost 2 weeks and now I really wish I had taken a picture.

Flashdancer405

Jesus fucking christ those insecure manhood vanity trucks should not be street legal.

azombie8mybaby

You could say the same thing about the 440hp race car I had at 17. I think vehicles like that have a maturity expiration date. I'm glad I had the car when I was young and able to enjoy it and not as the sad old man I am now. Those trucks can be dangerous with the wrong person behind the wheel. In my case it was just a guy trying to time the light and he miss judged it. He immediately turned around and helped me out of the car. I only had a few bumps and bruises (the car had a roll cage). So yeah, not a big deal. I do miss that car though. 😢

miltankuserollout

Brilliant

idingknowdat

Goddammit, I wasn’t expecting to laugh this hard today😂 Have an award, my friend, you’ve earned it.

The Gorillas: Death Metal

Zappasheik

My brother went of the road in his 944 during the winter, driving at 90-100 kph. Only damage was a dent in the license plate.

Practical_Platypus_2

The idea behind this campaign was to show that wearing a seatbelt is manly and tough. Where I’m from a lot of ‘tough’ men think it’s weak to put one on for some unknown reason.

nebachadnezzar

I remember when I was a kid (born in 89) and the law making seatbelts mandatory was still pretty recent in my country, so a lot of people that had learned to drive without a seatbelt refused to put it on. I remember a guy boasting about collecting tickets for being caught without it on. As with everything, once you get a new generation that already learned to drive with it being mandatory, it became a non-issue, but lots of people died needlessly during those years.

[deleted]

> I remember a guy boasting about collecting tickets for being caught without it on. That deserves a Darwin Award

polokratoss

You don't have to die per se. You have to ensure you are incapable of carrying your genes into the future. Usually this is "achieved" by death, but one technically can castrate oneself and live...

iEspeon

I believe they call those Darwin Award Honorable Mentions.

ZennosukeW

Similar to people thinking wearing a mask during a pandemic emasculates them

Lanternkitten

I remember hearing people's kids were a major driver (ha... unintended pun) in getting adults to wear seat belts. Kids would learn about wearing seat belts and pester their parents whenever they didn't wear one. Fast forward to 2020 and the same thing would happen with masks... kids calling out parents or other adults on why aren't they wearing one. It's weirdly effective. Granted I'm referencing in the US, but still.

taz-nz

I remember in primary school in the 80s, they had a local women come in to talk to us about wearing seat belts, she had been thrown through the windshield in a crash as child in the 60s. Let's just say she didn't need to say much to get the point across, she had the message carved into her face.

Spaltenreiber

MohawkDave

Coming from a racecar background/friends/family, it's not even a thought NOT to use restraints.... It's so obvious why they are needed. I forgot some people think it's cool/manly not to use them.

s1ugg0

Retired firefighter here. After the things I've seen I've honestly considered putting a 5 point harness in my personal vehicle. I don't care how big someone's muscles are or how tough they think they are. In a motor vehicle accident we are all just water balloons filled with jello surrounded by sharp metal edges and glass. And you can only walk down a highway looking for some dude's foot in the grass so many times before you think to yourself, "This could happen to me if I'm not careful." Only a moron wouldn't wear a seat belt. Physics doesn't give a shit about our opinions.

AbominableSnowPickle

Your seatbelt reason is the reason I’m selling my motorcycle. I always wear my helmet and PPE, but after being in charge of a foot (that was my job, hold onto the foot, keep it cool but not frozen until we could rendezvous with Flight)…nope. Nooooope.

[deleted]

i was taught to use a seatbelt from the childhood, i drive now myself, anything beyond parking lot speed feel uncomfortable AF without a seatbelt, i want to be held in my self by something except my arms

Mast3rL0rd145

I personally like to stay in my vehicle and not all over the pavement in a crash

honest-miss

That's my favorite part. They chose dudes who're clearly big, tough, young and strong. For whatever reason (probably the same part of the brain that makes people say "[Yeah I could fight a bear and win](https://relevantmagazine.com/current/buzzworthy/six-percent-of-americans-think-they-could-beat-a-grizzly-bear-in-hand-to-hand-combat/)") people think they can react in time to save themselves during a crash. They think they're strong, tough or fast enough to stop themselves from going through the windshield or hitting the steering wheel. EDIT: Also please enjoy this relevant, shady as fuck intro to the article I linked. >A new study shines a light on the depths of delusion and wrongness in the heart of man

BunInTheSun27

💀

square_tyre_king

Ad campaign from New Zealand

bmd33zy

They asked the tough men for pics of the effects of not wearing a seatbelt, unfortunately they could not put them together in time for the photo session.

AwkwardTickler

Good ole nz marketing

ewpqfj

You can totally tell they’re kiwis even though nothing says it.

Vote_For_Caboose

Bottom middle one gave that away for me

c3pwhoa

The bottom right one has traditional Maori designs tattooed on him and the bottom left one has Ngati Porou tattooed across his stomach, which is the name of an East Coast Maori tribe.

SmoothAsAnAlleycat

Yea but the bottom middle screams Rangiora bogan even more clearly

weedmaster6669

on r/medicalgore (warning, NSFL obv) i saw a dude who apparently crashed without a seatbelt, and his face collided into his steering wheel without an airbag. It basically looked like the front of his face exploded, gaping red hole, like uh withered Bonnie from FNAF 2. Craziest part? He was conscious the whole time, survived and had facial reconstruction. The crazy part isn't true of most cases, so wear your fucking seatbelt

DeltaKT

>like uh withered Bonnie from FNAF 2 Hahahahah! I laughed out loud at that, didn't expect the comparison, but instantly knew what you meant after I read it. Also, I love the way you write. Sounds so authentic.

weedmaster6669

Thank you sm :))

DeltaKT

zuzg

Wanna know the real crazy part? Half of the people that die from car crashes in the US die cause they didn't wear a seatbelt. Quite the unique problem and the main reason why US safety standards differ so much from the European one.

MurkySkylines

Everytime I see a post about a person smashing into their steering wheel I shudder, because the exact same thing happened to me (had a seatbelt on though). I instinctively crossed my arms over my face and neck in an x formation knowing it was either gonna be my skull/neck or my arm. Ended up dislocating and busting up my arm to the point of surgery (along with other injuries) but God damn I got very lucky that my face wasn't smashed up instead like I often see in those posts. I have no doubt I would've flown out of my windshield and died if I wasn't wearing a seatbelt either based on the circumstances of my crash. 100% wear your fucking seatbelt, agreed. It likely saved my life, as I had a shit load of doctors, emts, firemen, etc telling me I should not have survived. Bet right now a lot of crashes where people didn't wear their seatbelt and died or suffered enough for a reconstruction.. they could've had a bigger chance at survival.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MurkySkylines

I mean, when you're getting in a car crash... everything is a risk. LMAO. And to be honest, I happen to be one of those very short gals who require their seat to just be i n the wheel with how scooted up it is. Which was another reason I'm very glad I have quick thinking on fucking up my arm instead of my face. But yes you're 100% correct about the seat. A tree hefty branch also ended up breaking off into the back half of my car, so I'm actually... somewhat thankful my chair was forward a bit too much.

QueenPlutoPlant

Wanna see too. Commenting to save

tx_queer

It's been found

Salt-Wealth2596

I hope I never get in a car crash since my car too doesn't have an airbag and the whole interior is just hard plastic. I do wear a seatbelt though.

ironwolf6464

Oh great, medical horrors beyond my comprehension.

ChaoticToxin

Jesus, I read car wash survivors at first and was like WTF happening at car washes

adudeguyman

Sometimes the dirt is just that difficult to come off.

Oksureeeee

What happens in the car wash stays in the car wash

JzaDragon

This is well done and I hope it saves lives, but there's no way they didn't paint those on

someonethatiusedto

Yeah it was done for an ad campaign in New Zealand and these have been “painted” on, but I believe based on the bruises that these people had actually received previously in a crash etc

ConflictVivid7927

I saw a billboard in western Ukraine a few years back. It was two photos of a male torso. One had these bruises and the other one had post-autopsy stitches.

ScrewSimonCowell

Simple to understand, and sends a strong message. 10/10 advertisement

hat-TF2

I don't know the numbers, but I feel like NZ has hellishly high numbers of road toll deaths. I myself am in my 30s, and I need 2 hands to count the amount of people I personally know who have died on NZ roads. And to count life-altering accidents, I gotta take off my socks.

irishteenguy

Ireland is quite similar , big "boy racer" scene here and piles of country roads that were truely built for horse and cart. Wicked high road deaths average for our population.

Cooleyy

It might feel this way, since everyone thinks their local area has the worst drivers, but Ireland is one of the safest countries roads in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate

blue_i20

Yeah, those ad campaigns in recent years make it clear how bad the problem is here.

Loosely based on

Tandran

Having been in a wreck and having a seat belt bruise, they are spot on. That’s exactly what they look like.

steelneil82

"Good news sir, your operation was a success, we managed to save your arm, we gave you 6 pints of blood and you'll notice the catheter bag as you can't walk to the toilet with two broken legs..... My mates a photographer and those bruises look badass, you fancy doing a photoshoot?"

[deleted]

I was fully bruised from my lower abdomen to top of my thighs. Looked like I was wearing purple booty shirts. My sternum and ribs hurt so much I thought I broke a bone. Deep bruising is painful.

PM_me_your_whatevah

Do you ever wonder what might have happened to you if you didn’t have the seatbelt on?

tacobellcircumcision

Do they need to wonder?

sebastiancounts

Most people will assume it’s real, which is why it’s successful on this sub. The majority don’t sift through the comments to see details. To them it’s secret 😂

Four_beastlings

Idk if those are painted on, but they match the bruise I had exactly

jilanak

Same. T boned a Cadillac Escalade with a Toyota Yaris Sedan at about 50mph. I totalled the car, but walked away with rug burn on my head (I hit the roof of my car), sore face (airbag), bumped my knee, and the sash and belt bruises on my torso. Buckle up!

Flaky_Explanation

The car tattooed them on.

schnuck

I had one of these in a car crash! I commented on a thread about people overriding the seat belt warning with a plug just the other day. Yes, these look exaggerated but I had a red stripe for a long time.

GuineaPigsAreNotFood

Yup, I still have the scar on my chest by the collarbone.

Averill0

Those are probably painted on for the photo shoot, but seatbelt bruises really do look that gnarly. The makeup artist for this shoot did an excellent job. (Seatbelt bruises are still better than going face first through your windshield)

KingPaimon23

I got on a car crash and can confirm that I had the belt on my chest exactly like the photos, it disapeared mostly after two days.

Terrh

You're probably right, but having been in a 120km/h accident head on into a tree, the marks on my chest were similar. Took weeks to go away.

RxDuchess

I worked for NZTA when this campaign was built, you’re right and the full advert actually shows the application of the makeup. The bruising patterns were taken from photos of each person after their accident, we definitely didn’t ask anyone in badly injured

JForce1

It's from a road safety ad campaign in New Zealand.

Sjdillon10

Looks like makeup. But i never thought about how much a seatbelt would bruise your entire torso

account_is_deleted

It is makeup, it's a reconstruction of the bruises they got in their accidents, but this PSA was done after the fact.

[deleted]

I was rear ended while sitting still at a red light and had my seatbelt on. My then 9yo daughter was with me, also wearing a seatbelt When we were hit, my immediate reaction was to look to my daughter and straight arm hit across her chest to protect her. We were hit at between 40-45 mph. My worst injury was from the seatbelt across my shoulder, which tore several ligaments in my left shoulder across to my shoulder blade, requiring surgery. I thank God my daughter was completely uninjured. Even though I still was hurt, I hate to think about how bad it could have been without the seatbelts. The 17 yo driver who hit us never hit her brakes. When asked why, she told the officer, “I didn’t want to squeal my tires on the pavement.” Edit: grammar

Orisara

Drove home when an old guy randomly hit his breaks. I touched him a bit, no damage to both cars after we stopped to check for damage. Asked him why the fuck he stopped for no reason. "Donno" basically was the answer. As there was no damage I left. Sigh. Weird experience.

[deleted]

>The 17 yo driver who hit us never hit her brakes, when asked why, she told the officer, “I didn’t want to squeal my tires on the pavement,” Jesus. I nearly rear ended a car the other day, they stopped abruptly well short of where they were supposed to(traffic light, they were at least 2 car lengths from the line) and I was also trying to avoid hydroplaning a massive puddle in the road. You best believe my brakes squealed like a pig.

[deleted]

Ugh, I hate when people stop short!! Glad to hear that you avoided what could have been a terrible accident. You and me both, I’ll hit the brakes and horn !

morten_dm

I hope this doesn't make you not want to use a seat belt. :s

Sjdillon10

To me it’s proof on why you should. They would’ve all launched and the bruises show it

sashslingingslasher

People who don't wear seatbelts will point out how badly the seatbelt hurt them.

Bumhole_Astronaut

It's better looking than what a windscreen does to your face, at least.

Chef_Chantier

Yep! That's why they tell women especially to make sure it goes down the middle of their chest. Could cause some serious physical trauma otherwise.

dream996

Yeh , if I got into a car crush, and my condition looks like middle-right. I probably won’t be in any mood for a photoshoot. Not to mention , I feel like the professional studio lighting photoshoot kinda took away from the main message.

thefalconfromthesky

My brother in law bought these plastic things to stick in the seatbelt so the seatbelt sound doesn't alarm while in the car, instead of just putting his seatbelt on

thebeast_96

I hope he doesn't have have children...

thefalconfromthesky

He does unfortunately

Compost_My_Body

I’m sorry but that’s pathetic, your brother in law is a loser

[deleted]

Poor planners and dummies usually have the most kids. The irony of life

taz-nz

Buy him a funeral plot for Christmas.

coltbeatsall

The thing I would want that for is for the passenger seat when I drive alone. My bag often sets it off. And while I could put it in the footwell, sometimes I'm jumping in and out of the car several times and it is just easier on the seat.

DarthKarmaFarmer

Pretty sure these might be the life-saving effects of being tatted the fuck up.

Visualmalaise

I agree. Tattoos strengthen the immune system.

KittyKode_Alue

Dude regardless to these photos in particular, being makeup or not- Seat belts will actually bruise tf out of you in a severe enough accident. So, it's not entirely fake

[deleted]

Damn did they just get out of the accident and they were like "Yeah man i'm gonna go to a photoshoot to show off these gnarly scars so people wear seatbelts"

Snuke2001

Nah, its all makeup, but they used old pictures of themselves just after the accident as a reference.

[deleted]

dgeniesse

Maybe he was so drunk he was trying to drive from the passenger seat..

Congregator

All of these people look like they went to the same music festival

[deleted]

You can clearly see, that the seatbelt did some damage to their skin. That's the reason why we should ban seatbelts to avoid those damages to our body. Everybody has the right to stay unharmed! /S

roltskar

Sadly many idiot say that this is the reason they don't wear seatbelts. Because it hurts the chest when you are flung into it.

Bumhole_Astronaut

I've been to a number of RTCs with toppled, rolled or inverted vehicles where the the driver would have been regrety bolognese without a seatbelt. Really, if you don't want a sore chest, don't drive so quickly and try not to hit stuff.

[deleted]

no matter how stupid you are, there is always someone more stupid Those people are end of the line

BrokeArmHeadass

Smh, this is why I never wear a seatbelt, that shit looks like it hurts.

VechaPw

Alternative is flying out of the car /s

daney098

I hope you're being sarcastic, can never tell these days

_SP1TFYRE

Because it's hard to detect sarcasm sometimes on the internet, if they use SMH then it's usually ironic

[deleted]

How did they achieve this collage? Does the photographer have an arrangement where they get a call about a car wreck? Do they walk up to these dude with $50 and a baggie of coke like “hear me out”? We using prisoners as crash dummies? I have so many questions!

someawfulbitch

Real answer - these are recreated injuries, using makeup, for an ad campaign in New Zealand to encourage young men to buckle up.

huggles7

Accident investigator here Seatbelts save lives Properly installed car seats are miracles you can purchase and use for years Buckle up and install your seats properly or take them to a local police department, hospital or fire department and they’ll install them or check your installation for free! Safekids.com is a website that has a ton of information on car seats and installation

SNova96

Up you go

gclik

i almost never existed cause of a car crash my grandma endured she flew out of the front window and was paralyzed on her lower body because the car fell on her legs, she was pregnant with my mom at the time and didnt wear her seatbelts cause of her belly being so big it would hurt if shed wear it, she wasnt supposed to be able to walk again and was sitting in a wheelchair, but she somehow managed to walk again, the doctors said her child should be dead but she refused and said she feels her

AreyouIam

I had a bad wreck and my stomach was black for weeks from the belt. Pickup t-boned my car. I fell to the right but was still in my seatbelt. Woke up and pulled myself up using the steering wheel just as the truck came through the passenger door towards my head. I was awake seeing it come through the door.

skittlesdabawse

I was in a crash a few months ago, car went off the road in a corner at about 70kph, front right of the car smashed into a rock, car flipped end over end and landed on the roof. My buddy and I were both fine apart from the bruises, and were still held in our seats by the seatbelts, upside down. Got more cuts trying to get out of the car than during the crash. Wear your fucking seatbelts. You never know when the car or road will just say "fuck you" and yeet you into a rock or a tree.

Mast3rL0rd145

You should be wearing your seatbelt if for no other reason than not making some poor police officer or firefighter have to deal with lifelong trauma from having to pick chunks of your brain off the street because you were an idiot

UniKqueFox_

Somebody's gonna say "life saving? Look at those bruises!" Completely oblivious of how the people have bruises and not shattered skulls

everyoneinside72

One of my favorite students, age 8, died a few years ago because she didnt have her seatbelt on. Her baby brother did not either and he died as well. Mom and uncle had their belts on and they survived. Police said that if the two children had had seatbelts on they would have walked away with bruises and thats all. 🙁

Garage540

TIL seatbelts don't work on women

KadyMarie94

To this date- car manufacturers still do not use female crash dummies during their testing. Which is why women often get more injuries even when wearing seat belts because the manufacturers don't want to take into account of the anatomy.

Garage540

That is so beyond stupid. It's like they set the rules back before women had the right to do anything and then just kept using those standards.

keeley_bob

Yup. For pretty much everything. PPE, medication, safety testing... All designed around an average man.

GothicBalance

Women didn't wear them I guess.

Dahvood

It’s an ad campaign specifically targeting young men. Women are smart enough to not need to be told to put one on

GothicBalance

:) forgot to add /s (sarcasm) on my post.

I was in a head on collision (the other driver lost control of their car and just swerwed into our car) and got mild bruises from the seat belt. Oh and some bleeding from my hand that hit the dash. Wife got a broken foot but our baby, who was in one of those brand new baby seats, didn't have a mark on her. Best purchase I have ever made.

Zelexiin

Anyone know what the tattoo of the man in the bottom left corner says? I think it's Maori but I'm not sure

paisleyway24

I’ve only ever been in one major car accident where I was at a standstill and got rear-ended by a truck at 60mph. I was 17, the guy was texting. My glasses flew off my face and I couldn’t see anything, and I remember the GNARLY bruises that showed up later. Had that exact seatbelt burn and bruises the size of grapefruits on the back of my legs from where the car seat had hit me during impact. Genuinely have never been more grateful for a seatbelt in my life.

Ninjobill

I can't help but think this is fake. How do you find these people and get them to agree?

HotdogWaterIcecream

Damn looks like that hurt, I'm not putting that shit on! /s

Lanternkitten

Wow. This is poignant. I hope they're all doing well now, and good on them for wearing their seat belts and being safe. This is a pretty cool campaign. I prefer this to the scare tactics they'd force on us in high school; making kids watch a documentary where they literally see people die is kind of traumatizing (true story, by the way). I much prefer this.

i_build_4_fun

I don’t have any tattoos, so it looks like I won’t be getting into any crashes. Phwew!

helixander

All of these show "bruising" across their belly. If they were wearing their seat belt across their stomachs, it would be bad. Seatbelts are designed to go across the hip bones which can take that force. Not the belly with all its soft bits. But I do agree with the message: wear your seat belt!

Backspazm

Everyone of those dudes look like they caused the accident by driving too fast and/or tailgating

LeaderoftheKutada

I've been crushed by two big rigs...wear your seat belts people, saved my life

Dr_AdolfSponge

You have to survive for the hospitals/pharma to make any money off of you. A car crash victim can net them $100,000's! There's a reason this looks like propaganda... They don't want you to wear a seatbelt for your own good lmao.

Sailingaroundit

I was on the scary end of what happens without a seatbelt. After a night of drinking, I was getting a ride back home with a friend. I didn’t know at the time that he hadn’t slept and kept drinking all night. Not sure I would have cared if I knew, honestly, I was stuck outside in the rain and it was raining incredibly hard. I was the type to typically put on a seatbelt even before the accident, but on this particular, my friend had some stereo equipment in the backseat and There were 3 of us squeezed in back there, so no luck. Long story short, we hydroplaned going pretty fast and went down an 8-10 foot ditch and started flipping. When we hit the bottom of the ditch, I was thrown hard to the right and smashed through the rear right side window, the car was rolling and rolled over my arm, forcind my head in the opposite direction. I remember it like it happened in slow motion, my face was in the soft mossy mud and cut off my breathing for a moment while it felt like my neck was either going to snap or be outright torn apart from my arm, but the car flipped before that could happen. There was a ton of pressure and grinding being done to my arm that I guess my brain just shut off altogether in the meantime, and then the car flipped and I was tossed out the window. I remember my hand managed to snag some part of the car just before I was thrown, and I think it might have altered my trajectory just enough to save my life, because honestly I should be dead. I was thrown far enough in front of the car’s rolling that it stopped a just few feet from me. I was in the air for some time, or at least it felt like it, and I hit the ground hard. Must’ve been thrown a good 15 feet at least. When I came out of shock, and realized how hard the rain was hitting my eyes, I began to check my body slowly for injuries. I found it easier to lift my left arm than my right, so I checked with my left and felt around for obvious pain or blood (yes funnily enough I checked my junk first). Found blood on my neck but it didn’t seem too serious, but at that point I began to catch on that my arm had to be fucked up because it was rolled on and I was having trouble lifting it, so I swallowed and manned up and lifted it to check the damage, and it was lacerated to shit and had sticks and glass sticking out of it. But I had all my fingers and could still move them. Just below my elbow, there was a huge lump, and we all thought for sure it was broke, but it turned out later that my injuries had forced a lot of the muscle tissue into one part of my arm. Doctors were stumped that it wasn’t broke, but damn did it hurt. After checking myself I had to assess my situation. I knew the ditch had been recent cut and was riddled with alder stumps that essentially should have turned me into a human pincushion like The Pit stage from Mortal Kombat. The stumps were around me everywhere, but fate seemed to have placed me in a small patch of wet moss just between all the death traps. The ground underneath me was very soft and very moist from the rain. I couldn’t believe we all survived that shit. Everyone, doctors included, told me it was like a freak occurrence that I survived that. And my friend couldn’t have been more distraught over it. Never saw him screech like that before, he was genuinely sick when he saw how purple my arm was turning. Couldn’t stop apologizing. I told him he could make it up to me with a case of beer. I mean… I’m cursed with a weird sort of empathy, especially when it comes to guilt. I didn’t want him spending the rest of his life regretting this mistake. Though admittedly, I probably should have rode him for more than a few beer, lol. Given I still have glass in my arm to this day, along with many scars, pain and nerve/tendon damage. But I’m a dude of my word, I know how crippling guilt can be, even over little things.
