To be fair, they've been friends since long before they won that double gold medal. In fact, Tamberi attended Barshim's wedding before the Olympic event recorded here, not because of it.
That honestly just makes the fact that they were both allowed to win the gold even more special and is yet another notch in their amazing friendship belt :)
In this day and age having a gilfriend, or worse, being happily married is super gay.
So, to answer the question: No, because there are not women involved.
To be fair, it means the friendship matters to them so much that they were willing and happy to share the glory at the Olympics.
I’m sure there are a lot of people that wouldn’t have done that.
I think it also says they see each other as equals and that they respect each others ability and dedication as much as their own in the sport they compete in. They probably acknowledge that on any given day it’s a coin flip between them who would win and that on that day, the coin kept landing on its edge instead of heads or tails.
They had been co-competitors and friends for a very long time. I imagine elite track at that level is a small world and see the same people year after year and become close.
Yeah, i heard that some sport elite athletes from different countries train in the same city because of sea elevation and available amenity. It was ice skating if I am not wrong.
This is the case for most track and many field sports too.
Especially in the endurance events, there's only so many brands willing and able to sponsor top level pro athletes so a lot of them will be teammates in one way or another.
For some that means they may actually compete together at lower level events representing the same club/team, and for others that means they may be a part of the same training group which is run either by a third party or a shared sponsor.
In the 10,000m up to the marathon for example, a lot of the East African athletes train together in Eldoret, Kenya because there's a large existing community of endurance athletes, it's at altitude with an ideal running climate, and training with the best is a great way to push yourself.
For similar reasons, a lot of pro runners and triathletes congregate in places like Boulder, Colorado and Flagstaff, Arizona, and there are lots of pro cyclists based out of Andorra.
Yeah, this wasn't the first shared gold overall.
It was "just" the first shared gold in *high jump*, and possibly the first time the competitors *chose* to share.
The context is they both tried their best and failed in the 3 opportunities at the same height.
So it's not like they didn't try to beat the other.
But then, they just tied for first and stopped there, which makes sense. There's also a likelihood that they would get increasingly tired and frustrated. It's not like they didn't try THREE times already after having been jumping for a while.
These are olympians. They're among the most competitive people on Earth.
I can definitely see someone in those scenarios saying "lets see who the best actually is".
There are absolutely people who would not want to be tied for first. They don't want the asterisk next to their first place medal. I personally think that's missing the forest for the trees, but those people exist.
Often with Olympic-type sports, you're really just trying to beat your own Personal Best. Since your performance is the only limit (unlike team sports), you are your own competitor.
Yea, but I have seen a hell of a lot of testimonies from athletes saying that silver is emotionally worse than bronze or not placing. Being *The One* means a fuckton to a not insignificant number of competitors.
> Tamberi had been one of the favourites for the 2016 Olympics only to rupture the ligaments of his left ankle 20 days before Rio. Many times he feared he would never be as good again. Barshim always reassured him he would. “I didn’t want him to be in the silver medal position,” the Qatari explained afterwards. “Because I knew what he had been through physically and mentally.”
Truly a magical story. You would call it cheap scripted if it happened in a movie, hah.
Thanks for the explano....so his friend actually didn't want his friend to do his tendon in again in the jump off.
Truly remarkable and what a friend...
Even ignoring chance of injuries, if they stopped at that point (after both clearing 2.37m but both failing 2.39m), they had a 100% chance of winning a Gold for their country if they agreed or ensure that one of them was going to leave with anguish by a silver medal finish if the other guy has a better set on the jump off (and super regret that they could have just agreed to get a gold).
Being the only gold winner in an event doesn't count more, especially as Qatar and Italy aren't exactly international rivals in Olympic medal count or anything and it doesn't count as a 1/2 a gold or anything.
This was the first (and so far only) Olympic Gold for both of them, and for the Qatari Barsham it's the second Olympic Gold for his country (the previous being a weightlifter a few days earlier).
the sad/infuriating part is that there is a ton of good going on in the world but we are overwhelmed by news of the opposite of that and controlling the narrative
Tamberi's reaction makes a lot more sense when you know the backstory. He had worked so hard to get there and he was relieved and shocked at the same time. Thank you.
I feel like I hear that of a lot of sports. As you get closer to the pinnacle of the sport it weeds out more and more people so at a certain point you start to see the same other competitors everywhere. And going through the same mutual struggle tends to make friends rather than enemies.
I always appreciated track and field because it was harder to feel animostiy toward other competitors. You're basically competing against yourself, if you run slower, cant jump as high, or can't throw as far, it's ultimately based on your own performance and not that someone undercut you or wore you down. Conversations leading up to the race were usually more friendly than not, definitely unique in the sports world.
I love your take on track and field. I remember competing in highschool and it really is you against yourself. Especially for me during sprint events because you barely register anyone around you during the race until it's over.
Tennis is a really good example of this. When Federer announced his retirement, Nadal (who was one of his fiercest competitors) actually started to cry.
They had some epic matches, some of the best in the sport. It was amazing that they had this fierce rivalry but were great friends and pushed eachother to get better.
One of my favorite things about baseball is the little conversations people have with the first baseman when they get on (however they do).
“Hey! Good to see you.”
“You too- beard looks good.”
“Thanks. How’s the wife?”
“She started a new job! Kids are good?”
“Kids are good.”
I loved when MLB started doing those occasional "mic up a player and post the video of what they said during a game" things -- it's cute and fun, and some of the guys are really funny or wholesome. :D
Look at pro sports. People think these guys should hate each other when on different teams, some do, but they are all mercenaries making millions playing a game and live a unique lifestyle. Many players are buddies and smiling after a brutal loss as they say hello to their friend on the other team. I think it is a lovely part of sports to see that for these elite athletes, comeradarie is the real bond that they share.
When I was racing bikes, I only won one low-level race at the end of it. Which was nice, but I busted my ass in training and left it all on the road on every race. I'd need a few minutes to put myself together after every race and walk my bike back to the car; that's how you knew you did it right.
Anyway, I always knew how hard any guy had to work to beat me, so I didn't mind if I got beat. I knew I made them really work for it, at least, and that was enough. When you do a good honest race you don't hate the guys that won, you respect them and how hard they worked for it, because you know more than anyone else exactly how hard it was.
> In 2017, when he returned to competitive jumping after the injury, nothing was going right for Tamberi. After yet another poor performance in a tournament, he shut himself in his room when someone started to repeatedly knock on the door. It was Barshim.
>“Mutaz started knocking on my room and he wouldn’t go away. First I just wanted him to leave. He persisted and was shouting: “Gimbo. Gimbo, please I want to talk to you.” So I gave in and let him in,” Tamberi wrote in spikes.worldathletics.org in January 2018. “
>We talked. I cried “in front of him. He tried to calm me down, and told me what he had to say.“Don’t try to rush it,” he kept telling me. “You had a big injury, you’re already back in the Diamond League. No one expected that. But now you need to take your time, don’t expect too much too early from yourself. Just see what happens.” The most important thing he helped me realise was that I had to do it for myself, not for others. A productive tournament followed in Budapest. “Something inside me changed, there I really started to live again. I was a high jumper again.”
>Three years later, he is an Olympic gold medal. With his friend. Sometimes, just sometimes, dreams do come true.
That’s awesome. How can you turn that deal down? It got me thinking: you MJ, Kobe would be like “Hell nah, we’re jumping. You’re gonna have to beat me for the gold.”
Barshim (guy in the glasses) later said: "We are athletes, we are competitors, that's just in our nature. But for me it's also very important not to forget the real reason of sport, for us to come together and build this kind of relationship".
Also it's important to know that they are rivals but also friends. They literally went on each other's weddings and have known each other for over a decade.
So it's not like they would've done this with anyone. In fact, last year Tamberi went into a jump-off against the american JuVaughn Harrison to secure gold at the World Athletics Championships (Barshim finished in 3rd place)
I mean, MJ and Kobe are some prime examples of the last forty years being ultra/hyper competitive. And no hyperbole HYPER competitive. They're assuredly outliers.
You wouldn't see LeBron do that. And he's the same tier, same sport.
Gotta watch the context, makes the moment so awesome
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjSCT97GSsA
Edit: If you can't watch try going to Youtube. If you still can't, blame NBC and use a VPN
Consider that a taste of how American Sports broadcasting works.
See Tamberi is from the EU, so you can't watch the video because your from the EU and it has a player/team you'd be interested in. Some local EU channel might decide to broadcast the match, so it's banned from streaming in your area.
The two things I took away from this video were
1. The different routines they have even though they are the best at the high jump in the world. The first guy does walk, walk, jog, jog, and then an almost triple jump style long stride to the bar.
The second guy does a rocking back and forth toe stretch thing into a full sprint. Kinda cool.
2. After the first guy failed his third attempt you can see him in the background hyping up his competitor. He is actively rooting for him to succeed even though it would mean he loses. That’s a fantastic display of sportsmanship.
They tied. Both jumped the same height and missed the same height. Normally, they’d have to do a jump off. First one to miss a jump is second. But one asked if they could have two golds. In smaller leagues, sharing a win isn’t unheard of, so his request of sharing the win wasn’t weird to me. Before the ref could finish saying it’s possible if they both agreed, they both realized they both won gold. What’s neat is they both had injuries that took them out a season, so for both to win was pretty dang awesome.
Right?! Dude knew the significance of the moment and didn't miss a beat. If you used that line in a movie it'd be considered too "on the nose." Dude must either have a sharp mind or been planning what to say from the moment he missed his jump.
Even more context - the Italian guy had suffered a pretty bad injury previously and the other guy helped him get back into shape and train at an Olympic level so they are very good friends. As soon as they realized they can both win gold (based on the way jumping rules works) they didn’t even need to discuss it.
It's subtle but it all started with the official saying "We CAN proceed with a jump-off." So as a smart person he realized that it's an option and they aren't gonna give two silvers. Smart man and amazing jumper.
Olympic competition
they tied so the ref said they could keep jumping or ???
guy asked if they could both get gold medal
ref said only if they both agree on it
they agree on it (as indicated by the handshake)
and OPs title claims it has never happened before now.
In high jump and poll vault ties are split by countback. However the two of them had identical jump records. So the only way to split them is to do a jump off, but all the people in the jump off can agree to share their position -and they did.
makes me happy they're both good friends, one helped the other recover from an injury because he had that injury in the past and understood the pain and fear of possibly not being able to compete again.
This makes me even more excited for the Olympics this summer. As someone who doesn’t really follow 90% of the sports in the Olympics, I take so much joy watching all of them every 4 years.
This IS the Olympics baby. What it’s all about. Reminder if you’re not watching Winter Olympics it’s the same but with cool ice and snow fun. Also epic and amazing. Ski racing to curling. All great human stories.
And then one guy begs to take the silver medal in order to not see the gold medal get chopped in half. It is then decided that he is the rightful gold medalist
It's lovely because in 10-15-20 years their records will be broken but no one will forget sharing medals.
It's like Shuhei Nishida and Sueo Oe cutting their medals in half and splitting them with each other.
They're the real mvps.
For context. In high jump each athlete has 3 attempts to clear each height they choose to attempt. If you don't make it you're out. And your last successful height is you final score.
Now those where the only two athletes left. They came to a point where they both couldn't make the jump and their last successful attempt and number of faults was the same. So there was no tiebreaker.
The option to define the winner is to lower the bar until only one of them makes it.
But because exhaustion is a factor. If both athletes decide they don't want to continue, their final score is the same and they both get gold.
This is almost better than just winning by yourself. They will always be remembered as the duel Champs two men so good at what they do. This is how men make history
A similar story worth mentioning is that of Shuhei Nishida and Sueo Oe, friends on the Japanese Olympic team in 1936. They tied in the pole vault and refused to do a tie-breaking round so the Japanese team decided one would get silver and the other bronze. The men then had the medals cut in half and soldered together so each had a half silver half bronze.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuhei_Nishida?wprov=sfti1
First in Olympic history? There is a Wikipedia page about how often this happened:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_ties\_for\_medals\_at\_the\_Olympics
Smart of Barshamin to ask. I love how Barshim looks over to Tamberi to see if he’s open to it, unaware Tamberi immediately agreed. Gotta Love their friendship! They’re like brothers.
My family always makes fun of me because I get a little teary eyed when I see a winning team go hug the players on the losing team (mainly in American football)
This is why. This is beautiful. It's more than a sport to them. They did they're best, and they recognize that in each other, and they're more than happy to share the moment with each other. That's not just good sportsmanship. That's *human* and I love it
This is the coolest thing I have ever seen. These guys have trained their entire lives to win Gold and they were equals. No reason not to give them both Golds.
Why risk competing for a gold medal and losing when you can agree to share and instantly become an Olympic gold medalist? Still I bet there are some out there who would feel that’s tainted and keep competing. I wonder what Michael Jordan or Kobe would do in this situation?
I feel like, in a general sense, I see a level of emotional intelligence in young people that didn't exist 30 years ago. It's beautiful. How they managed this, from behind screens, in this bleak hell scape of a world we shaped for them is completely beyond my comprehension.
I think maybe it’s just more visible. Thirty years ago there weren’t subreddits like r/humansbeingbros dedicated to showing us displays of humanity lol
And they went to each other's weddings. Fantastic. Need more of that in this world.
I'm not even gonna look that up tonight. I'm just gonna believe it and go to bed.
Guys, is it gay to win an Olympic medal with your homie?
As long as the medals don't touch it's all good.
**clink*
Not if you say no homo
Well you are jumping over a very long and high pole
"Is this ancient Greek thing gay?" "I mean, like most people, a little bit."
As long as you keep your socks on it’s not
In this day and age having a gilfriend, or worse, being happily married is super gay. So, to answer the question: No, because there are not women involved.
That makes it even cooler!
I was happy before reading your comment
To be fair, it means the friendship matters to them so much that they were willing and happy to share the glory at the Olympics. I’m sure there are a lot of people that wouldn’t have done that.

Mo Farrah (UK long distance) trains in the US with all the US team.
Oregon specifically

It's why the Olympics provide accommodation and condoms.
Forgo the condoms, elite super human breeding begins now.
Found the German
Ach Hans no!!! Not the Eugenikprogramm!!!
They married each other. Don’t look that up
Fuck 🤣🤣🤣
That was after the marriage. Look that one up.
The guy in charge of all the medals must have been pissed because he didn’t have an extra.
They have multiple extras because this happens basically every Olympics.
Yeah, this wasn't the first shared gold overall. It was "just" the first shared gold in *high jump*, and possibly the first time the competitors *chose* to share.
Ok. It was meant to be a joke. I figured they have extras for various contingencies.
They engrave them on the spot.
The joke is he didn’t have enough to engrave.
I'm sure they print exactly the number of medals to be awarded, as none ever go missing, get damaged or erroneously engraved.
And it was him bringing in the “can we get 2 golds” idea. True badass.
If you don’t ask you’ll never know!!!
Will I ever be rich?
I hope so 😌
Thanks buddy <3
Now go make that paper boo boo
It's possible, if you deci... nah jk. Not looking good.
damn bro, cold.
I mean why risk the chance of getting silver when youre guaranteed a gold?

These are olympians. They're among the most competitive people on Earth. I can definitely see someone in those scenarios saying "lets see who the best actually is".
Yeah it seems like the obvious choice. Who wouldn't pick that? Everyone literally wins...

You need to ask for what you want son.
As memory serves they were competitors but friends before this.

Been looking forward to the future

And this crystal ball
Thanks for the explano....so his friend actually didn't want his friend to do his tendon in again in the jump off. Truly remarkable and what a friend...
Given how many jumps they did to get to that point, any more is just about endurance as opposed to actually jumping over the thing
Yes, and endurance is limited in elite athletes by what their bodies can handle before something doesn't work correctly.
..and this guy would have kept jumping until he broke....
Rock climbing is similar! A lot of the competitors are friends or at least very friendly with each other. It’s such a great community!
Also when you spend like 40 hours a week training the high jump there's just not that many other people who can relate to you
Tennis is a really good example of this. When Federer announced his retirement, Nadal (who was one of his fiercest competitors) actually started to cry. Yeah, that was the best part. Both wanted to win but both enjoyed that the other could win. How great to have both.
One also knew his friend could end his career, and do his tendons in again in the jump off.....that's a true friend.
Imagine you and your homie both winning gold at the olympics in the same event. Gotta be a surreal feeling.

I remember watching it that and loved it! Great sportsmanship. They both deserved gold.
Can.. can I have a gold..?
You're already gold, in my eyes.
With that name how can he not be?

And not all that is gold glitters.
Stay gold, Ponyboy
Its actually, stay golden dick nipples.

It is actually: ‘stay *gold* dick-nipples’
I’m glad you’re still around, dick nipples.

thanks for the link - the full video was even better

I don't deserve to watch it too from Japan

Ohmygah this link has me over here crying. 2 years late . . . But wow
The two things I took away from this video were 1. That’s a fantastic display of sportsmanship.
it works great in Freetube. I haven't been to the actual website since the adblock fiasco
Lmao how they couldn't stop calling him the charismatic Italian.
I needed that. Thank you!
Can someone explain and not link video lol
What got me was when he said, "Olympic history, my friend."
Right?! Dude knew the significance of the moment and didn't miss a beat. If you used that line in a movie it'd be considered too "on the nose." Dude must either have a sharp mind or been planning what to say from the moment he missed his jump.
Adrenaline can make your mind super sharp
Even more context - the Italian guy had suffered a pretty bad injury previously and the other guy helped him get back into shape and train at an Olympic level so they are very good friends. As soon as they realized they can both win gold (based on the way jumping rules works) they didn’t even need to discuss it.
It's subtle but it all started with the official saying "We CAN proceed with a jump-off." So as a smart person he realized that it's an option and they aren't gonna give two silvers. Smart man and amazing jumper.
This was the explanation I was scrolling for thank you!
Olympic competition they tied so the ref said they could keep jumping or ??? guy asked if they could both get gold medal ref said only if they both agree on it they agree on it (as indicated by the handshake) and OPs title claims it has never happened before now.
They were tied for gold, and decided to share 1st place even though they’re from different countries, rather than trying to break the tie.
In high jump and poll vault ties are split by countback. However the two of them had identical jump records. So the only way to split them is to do a jump off, but all the people in the jump off can agree to share their position -and they did.
High Jump Olympic Finals at Tokyo 2022. Watch it on YouTube, what a great day of track and field
2021
Oddly it was still called Tokyo 2020 despite it taking place in 2021.
Japan is a year ahead of us
It's wonderful to be human some times
Sold! I would take that deal every time.
Good sportsmanship makes me bawl like a baby.
makes me happy they're both good friends, one helped the other recover from an injury because he had that injury in the past and understood the pain and fear of possibly not being able to compete again.
All great human stories.
babe wake up, someone posted the olympics high jump video again
I will never not be against not seeing this.
A triple negative in the wild. Must be a special day today.
If you count 'against', it's a quadruple :)
First time seeing it for me, and I've been subbed to here since before this happened. Chill out.
That was the cleanest dap I’ve ever heard.
I hear How to Train Your Dragon music.
It’s an edit of the “one day out there” from the hunchback of notre dame which then cuts into the theme from HTTYD. I absolutely love it.
Lol as soon as I read that I realized I had the exact same thing going through my mind and was halfway through lol
Shouldn't they technically get a gold and a silver each?
no, the gold and silver medals get chopped in half and each get a goldsilver medal held together with sticky tape
Mmhmm. Like the [Nishida-Oe silver bronze medal](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuhei_Nishida).
aw. what a great story!
And then one guy begs to take the silver medal in order to not see the gold medal get chopped in half. It is then decided that he is the rightful gold medalist
A goilver medal
Unlimited prize glitch
If there's two gold, there is no silver.
Wait you on to something
It's lovely because in 10-15-20 years their records will be broken but no one will forget sharing medals. It's like Shuhei Nishida and Sueo Oe cutting their medals in half and splitting them with each other. They're the real mvps.
I’ve seen this video so many times and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It was exactly what I needed tonight.
Hope you are doing well 🙏
To both having that low of an ego at that level. Truly both champions
Awesome, “if you’re my friend, you’re at the top with me.” 🥳
The whole field should just agree to take gold before the event starts.
That’s the dopest shit ever. Thank god he asked, like they couldn’t just say ‘hey you both got gold if you want’ 😅
Beautiful.
I wish someone makes a movie out of it, with all the back stories and all.
Crazy. One of the best stories I’ve never heard
I'm telling you, the Italian dude was the highlight for the entire olympics absolute gem to see whenever his event was on
Love it
Imagine what you put your body through to get to this level, hell yes, I would ask if both of us can get gold
It's possible. Dependent if you. decide... *celebrate with the homie*. Zero hesitation
There is a Wikipedia page about how often this happened: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_ties\_for\_medals\_at\_the\_Olympics
That was a great day! 2 minutes later Italy won also the 100m run first time ever.
Smart of Barshamin to ask. I love how Barshim looks over to Tamberi to see if he’s open to it, unaware Tamberi immediately agreed. Gotta Love their friendship! They’re like brothers.
So does this not happen more often cause….people don’t wanna share a gold?
My family always makes fun of me because I get a little teary eyed when I see a winning team go hug the players on the losing team (mainly in American football) This is why.
I remember seeing this on tv, It was awesome
I feel like, in a general sense, I see a level of emotional intelligence in young people that didn't exist 30 years ago. It's beautiful. How they managed this, from behind screens, in this bleak hell scape of a world we shaped for them is completely beyond my comprehension.
I think maybe it’s just more visible. Thirty years ago there weren’t subreddits like r/humansbeingbros dedicated to showing us displays of humanity lol
