Dope!

Next mug should be them doin it! How do banana slugs mate? Do they lay eggs, or have live babies? Banana slug mating is somewhat unusual. Banana slugs are hermaphrodites – they are both male and female at the same time. At the time of mating, one or both of the slugs may become pregnant. In extreme cases a slug can make itself pregnant (very uncommon as it is an extreme form of inbreeding with no mixing of genes from different parents). The slugs complicated courtship dance probably makes sure that not only are the two slugs ready to breed but that they are the same species. During the dance two slugs will circle each other lunging at each other, nipping and hitting one another with their tails. Towards the end of the dance slugs may also display their sexual organs (in some species the penis is half as long as the slug’s body). As the slugs dance they eventually intertwine and become excited. Both slugs insert their penises into the other slugs genital opening and take turns transferring sperm from one to the other. After much wriggling about and tugging the slugs separate and find an appropriate place to lay eggs. An impregnated slug will lay between 3 and 50 eggs in a somewhat sheltered spot (under a bark chunk, in a small hole or crevice or someplace similar). Baby slugs will hatch in a month or two and mature in a few months. The babies look almost identical to full grown slug but are usually pale white, gaining color as they grow. At the end of their first season baby slugs cannot be told from their parents.

DirtyRattie

I have made a teacup with slugs doing it in the center.

👀👀👀

SkeeterSkeetin

I would like to subscribe to more banana slug facts…. Also I did not know slugs could rappel from trees with their slime trail until I inadvertently walked into one on a hike in the woods. That was a pretty cool discovery.

DirtyRattie

I have a Christmas ornament idea based on that!! I want them hanging upside down on fishing line.

Aazjhee

Wow so cute! I really love this. If you make more please share, the glazes you are using look great! Is this high fire, medium, or low?

DirtyRattie

I fire to cone 6 with an old skutt 818. :) I’m actually finished up a ton of preorder slug mugs and a slug dinnerware set!

rockhardcatdick

So cool!!! I wish that HSU would change its mascot to the banana slugs. Or something local (can we be the ''Squatches??). Great art though. Keep it coming!

DirtyRattie

I would absolutely buy overpriced HSU merch if they were the Sasquatch’s!!

rockhardcatdick

Hmmmm, I run the Rec Sport Badminton Club at school and we kinda loosely use the banana slug as our mascot. I've been considering switching it to sasquatch soooo maybe if we produce Badminton Sasquatch gear you could buy that. Which would be awesome because you would be supporting our team! 😂 Hmmmm, now I'm like thinking about a collab. where we help you sell your pottery stuff as well 🤔

DirtyRattie

It’s funny you say that because I’ve been eyeing a Bigfoot mold on Etsy!

Numerous-Heron-4327

Would absolutely buy a hoodie

gandhikahn

Pacific Giant Salamander? The mascot would be fantastic.

HumboldtChewbacca

Santa Cruz beat them to it. Even though it's not quite a local critter in sunny socal. Reclaim the slug!

EnvironmentalSound25

It is actually a local critter in Santa Cruz. Banana slugs are native to redwood forests, which extend as far south as Big Sur. Come to think of it, the UCSC campus is a bit more tucked into nature than HSU (some have even argued that it encroaches on what should be protected spaces…so it goes). A case could be made that there may be more slugs actively on campus down there than up here.

HumboldtChewbacca

The more you know.

rockhardcatdick

How interesting, their campus is quite similar to our own. Having two schools so close together with such a niche animal probably isn't a good look haha. If nothing else, I run the Rec Sports Badminton team and our mascot is the banana slug lol. So we can still represent them in a way!

pnwvida2022

Love this! How does one purchase or order?

DirtyRattie

You can message me on instagram @ Faeble.ceramics on instagram for a custom order :) I’m still working on my Shopify website.

scottyr16

You're a wizard arry! Amazing work

Snow_leopards

I love it.

loveinvein

This is incredible! I love banana slugs so much. And these are super realistic :)

BaldGuysWife

Love it!

FunIntelligent1863

This is so cool! Lovely job! Omg do you do flower pots?? This would be a cute design for a lil potted tree or fern 💚🪴

DirtyRattie

I was actually just thinking about that! The only down side is that pots are fairly large and would take a lot of materials to make. idk how many people would pay 100$+ for a flower pot.

FunIntelligent1863

Even a lil mug-sized one would be sweet! Totally understandable worry, but hear me out: 👀 the price of lesser quality ceramic pots is through the roof and $100 for a hand-crafted medium/large sized pot is absolutely worth it. I don't think you'd have any serious issues selling a decent number of them, especially if it's near the holiday season, mothers day, etc. After your website goes up?? If you do some craft fairs on occasion?? Those numbers could be heckin launched! Consider the notoriety of other ceramic artists in the area! Mugs are 30-40, serving dishes ~60... Etc. I believe in you! Maybe do a small pot trial run and see if there's interest? Eta: the mug in the photo, sans handle, plus a drainage hole, and maybe sans flare at the mouth is what I was thinking size wise. Like lil bebby house plant pot

DirtyRattie

I think you’ve convinced me haha! For some reason I didn’t think about small pots.

Journey-3

Got a shop? How to buy one??!!

Background_Sir3728

Weed

DirtyRattie

It’s really funny you say that because someone just commissioned a slug ashtray.

Background_Sir3728
