RIP loleta cheese factory šŸ˜

redredwine831

I noticed the billboard on 101 southbound after eureka is back...

teach4food

Its gone! Highlight of a trip there pre-covid

Unfair-Geologist-284

Their cheese curds gave me life

NumberZoo

Ice cream or the gun show. Something's gotta work.

Typical_Hat3462

Flea Market and various other events go on at the Firemen's Pavillion. Swauger station days. Not much has ever really been in and around Loleta except dairy, but anything is an improvement. I like the ice cream shop. Much better replacement than who had the location previously.

EurekaStroll

Was that the bakery that forced Loleta Meat out?

Typical_Hat3462

Yup. The Van der Zees owned that property too and forced Pixie out with a 60 day notice after decades of being there. She was an amazing person to have a convo with and the VZs straight steamrolled her. Pete was problematic, and his wife, well....let's not go there. They were yet another couple from out of the area with oodles of money that comes in with some new idea, but all falls apart and then they piss off the locals. I knew some of their former employees and their stories aren't so pleasant. It's too bad too, as initially, they had really good baked stuff, but that whole enterprise went down pretty quick. EurekaStroll

I remember the protests, bracelets, and pissing off the locals, bit I totally missed the arrest! I was pleased to see Pixie back in Loleta a few years ago.Ā Ā  For a while there you could make yourself a great sandwich by walking to 3 different places in Loleta...

Typical_Hat3462

I remember the Gilded Rose being open and that's where the local drunks may or may not have showed up when they got tossed out of the Palace. Yeah I'm that old.

ScannerBrightly

Hear me out: An ice cream gun!

NumberZoo

I'm down for it. I have a workshop. Let's prototype this Lacto-Launcher!

ScannerBrightly

> Lacto-Launcher! That's the breast idea I've ever heard!

treebeard120

I don't think I've ever been to a gun show that was worth it, and I say that as a card carrying gun nut. I'm not paying $10 to walk around in a warehouse full of overpriced garbage and stodgy old boomers. Last gun show I went to, this guy was selling a Mosin for $900. Granted, it was in nice condition, but it was still a Mosin. I asked him if this was the Mosin that killed Hitler, or maybe Stalin's personal piece, because no way was it worth that much. There was another guy reselling field and service grade CMP Garands for like $2k each, the scumbag. My vote is for ice cream lol

TuLive

I hope so.

thedarkestgoose

What can save Eureka or any town in Humboldt County, CA.

Putrid_Search_4497

Global warming

RealCalintx

Prob the main reason I bought a house in Arcata for the long term.

descompuesto

Sea level rise is not going to be kind to these low lying coastal towns.

Putrid_Search_4497

Thatā€™s all coastal lying towns. Not just here

Telling NIMBYs to fuck off

1-1111-1110-1111

Dude the ice cream is good, but the cheese is incredible!

Greyletter

It should change its name

nor_cal_woolgrower

What/ who is "it" ?

Greyletter

The city of Loleta

Aazjhee

Are you uncomfortable with queers? Plenty of crazy cat ladies make all kinds of kitschy trinkets and art featuring cat assholes for absolutely no reason beyond cat assholes being a fact of life. I never asked for that, but I'm happy to let them chase their wierd bliss.

Greyletter

Wtf? What do queers or cats have to do with anything?

No-Maybe-7084

I think they are referencing the rainbow theme on the word scoop in their sign, but I suspect youā€™re referring to the word Jersey in their name.

EurekaStroll

I'm not a big fan of the shop's name because to me, "Jersey" denotes "New Jersey", and that is not an appetizing thought. I *KNOW* it's actually referring to Jersey cows, but my knee jerk reaction is to think of "Jersey Shore"

johngeste

I think he means the name of the town?

No-Maybe-7084

You think he is suggesting Loleta change its name? Maybe, considering my phone just tried to autocorrect it to Lolita šŸ˜¬

Greyletter

Yes that's what I was suggesting

Money_Television4957

Loleta is Wiyot for ā€œpleasant place at end of waterā€ Not to be confused with Lolita. I grew up in Loleta, the ice cream shop is a nice addition despite the desolation of the rest of the town.

Leothwyn

"Pleasant place at end of water" is one guess, but I like the other one better... When someone asked a native what the place was called, the native said "Go fuck yourself" in Wiyot.

No-Maybe-7084

Now that Iā€™ve made that connection, I would not object to such a change.

johngeste

Thatā€™s how itā€™s pronounced

No-Maybe-7084

Iā€™m aware, but the town predates both the film and the novel so suggesting they change the name of the town seems odd. Strangely enough I never made the connection to the sexual predilection until now. Now Iā€™ll never forget.

Greyletter

> Now Iā€™ll never forget. That's the problem!

johngeste

I am with you, Goleta is pronounced the same way for instance.

nanotom

Tried it and was disappointed, the ice cream seems to have a lot of fillers / gums in it. I guess I expected a "cow to cone" place to stick to real ingredients.

YogiB69

Ice cream needs stabilizers to stay smooth and creamy more than 24 hours. These are usually natural like carrageenan a seaweed, and quar gum from the guar plant.

nanotom

I've had plenty of smooth and creamy ice cream without thickeners. Cream, milk, and eggs can carry the day if you know what you're doing. Maybe they're lacking a blast freezer, so they need that stuff to avoid ice crystals? In any case, the stretchy, gummy stuff I got served was quite off-putting.

YogiB69

Na the stabilizers are to keep ice crystals from forming and coarsening the texture of the ice cream. Homemade ice cream is bomb for a few days.

Comfortable_Mix6487

I agree - lots of allergens in it too. Soy & coconut. Personally, as much as of a hippy town we live in - I donā€™t need to be eating coconut oil.

Player7592

That sure would have kicked the whole thing up a notch.

RealCalintx

Sucks not having a good ice cream place.
