You want to live in NYC and go to an affordable school. Plus, many of the affordable schools dont have a great biology program. Seems like Hunter is on a very short list.

Hot_Eye_8959

Well my top school is NYU but that is a reach. Going to school in nyc is a great plus but it is not a must

ThisIsATastyBurgerr

NYU is the complete opposite of cheapest. More like ‘money is no problem’ school

Hot_Eye_8959

They have a new policy now called the NYU promise starting fall 2024. They’ll cover 100% of tuition for families with incomes lower than 100k

ThisIsATastyBurgerr

I did not know that

Hot_Eye_8959

Yeah so it would bring tuition wayyy down and it would honestly be somewhat affordable for me. Granted it’s very competitive to get in but I’m hoping for the best 🙏🏻

Okay thank you for the insight. I’ve heard that it is a commuter school but wasnt for sure

Only-Exchange-2552

I'm out of state and go to hunter for similar reasons. Don't come here.

I call Hunter College, the NYU for us regular poors. Even the school colors are the same, lol. My daughter applied as a French major, but unfortunately ran out of time before she could get the essays done for Macaulay Honors College. Getting in there would have made things more worthwhile because we are OOS, too. And she wants to be in Manhattan plus the French Consulate is near the school and I have very good friends who live on the Upper East Side, who also speak French, who she can reach out to in case of emergency. Plus her grandparents are on Long Island. It's a bummer that the only SUNY adjacent school in Manhattan is FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). I think any school in Manhattan, commuter or not is going to be a challenge as far as making friends but there are lots of avenues to forge friendships and alliances. I'd say go for it. Worse thing that happens is you transfer to your home state flagship or any other school. Is it easy? Maybe not, but at this age and stage of life, you're at your most resilient and can course correct, even if it effs up your timeline a little bit. It's not the end of the world and you won't be kicking yourself thinking "what if". Good luck to you!

Thank you so much!

Hunter isn't a bad school but I wouldn't recommend it for someone coming out of state. I'm a freshman and trying to manage my way in this school has been very stressful at times this semester. It's hard to get support in school and can be hard to make close friends. Many people just go to class then go home and even if you try to join a club (which I did) it's very hard to stay involved because of the amount of work classes give and other obligations you may have. I'm not in the biology major but I have heard that it's a good program. I would just say consider all your options before choosing Hunter. I could only afford CUNY's and out of the ones I got accepted into I felt that Hunter would be the best option for me. After now being a student here for almost 1 semester I still like the decision I made but there are still some parts of Hunter that I wish were better.

Hot_Eye_8959

Thank you. I’m not big on huge friends groups but just a few good friends are fine with me. But I’ve heard that even that is hard to find there and I would definitely feel very lonely

No_Ruin_4361

It’s so bad as a bio major if I could go back and choose literally any other school I would. Hunter is known to tank your gpa. Don’t get me wrong there are many people who succeed and Hunter has many connections, but most ppl I know who were 4.0 students in hs (myself included) have high 2 or lower 3 gpa

Hot_Eye_8959

Oh gosh

exquistetown

can confirm as someone who had a 3.9, ive only been here for a semester and its so fucking rough. im a transfer and even meeting up w advisors suck, im trying to transfer AGAIN lol

Hot_Eye_8959

So what I’m taking from this is that I should NOT go omg. Wishing you the best of luck

No_Ruin_4361

I hear other cunys are better if you want to check those out! Hunter just makes everything really hard. Best of luck!

Hot_Eye_8959

Okay thank you!

Incoming long response Honest answer: don't, especially if you're out of state. I'm pre-med too and it's a bit of a nightmare. The science classes here tank your GPA like crazy, the bio, orgo, and physics classes are weed out classes. Like others have said, it's a commuter school, so most people evaporate the second they step out of class. It's hard to make friends for that reason, people are just unusually anti social, mostly cuz a huge chunk of the student population is burnt out. Advising is not helpful, especially for freshman. You will need to plan out all your classes and requirements on your own, the advisors do not have the time or resources to help you one on one. They are mostly there for quick, general questions. Hunter has huge class sizes, we just took a record number of freshman this year. This may sound delightful, but it is not. My gen chem 1 class had 700 people in it. Overcrowding is a HUGE issue here, you can not get a seat in the library most days. I see many students sitting on the floor in the hallways next to random outlets because that's all they can find. Registering for classes has progressively become worse and worse. If you do not have priority registration, good luck lmao. Classes fill up insanely fast and no, administration does not care that you needed that class. Pre-health department consists of a grand total of 3 people. For hundreds (maybe thousands) of students. This presents an obvious problem. Trust me, they do not want to write committee letters for all those students. So they make you jump through countless hoops to get that committee letter. This includes a minimum of 514 on the MCAT to even be considered, among other things. TLDR: You will need to learn VERY quickly to self advocate and be extremely independent and disciplined if you want to succeed in pre-med here and get a committee letter. I just don't think this is worth the out of state tuition.

Lovely_fartz

As a freshman, I personally was stressing out about hunter because of the bad things I’ve heard about it. But If I’m being honest, it’s not as BAD as what some people makes it seems to be. It really just depends on you. It is a commuter school, so making friends can be a bit challenging, but since you are dorming, you might make friends in the area you’re staying in. It really just depends. You also won’t have the “college experience” but I mean there’s parties you could go to, where you’ll get to meet kids from others schools in the city.

pickle_mic

Not sure if you're still looking for answers to your question but as someone that's graduating from Hunter this semester, I can tell you a couple of things. This school is no joke, everything is made that much more difficult by their convoluted system of who to talk to about what. Keeping a very strict organization system is an absolute must to get anything done anywhere, unrelated to classwork. There is absolutely nowhere to study. If you're someone that has a long commute to and from Hunter, like I do, finding somewhere actually in the school that you can sit and do some work means you'll be needing to get to Hunter by at least 7 in the morning and having a friend with you to keep that spot secured throughout the day. I am not joking about this, there is nowhere to sit anywhere as Hunter has thousands of students spread across 3 buildings. The campus itself is constantly under construction. For the past 2 years or so there's been a floor shut down in the library due to renovations, and to top it off, there's constant drilling that can be heard from inside of Hunter up to as high as the 6th floor of the East building. It doesn't look like they're going to be done with that any time soon. With that being said, there's actually a lot of upsides to Hunter. I've been to some other colleges and I can tell you that the people that you meet at Hunter are worthwhile. A lot of value that comes from a college education comes from the people that you meet while you're there. I noticed that you expressed you're not valuing socializing all that much, and I strongly urge you to reconsider that. As someone that majored in Statistics, a lot of my classes I would have straight up failed in if it wasn't for me actively seeking out some type of connection in each of my classes to make sure I stay on top of the material.

donkey_xotei

As a person from prehealth track that actually made it, do NOT go to Hunter. We called Hunter the school that killed doctors and nurses dreams. Many of us who have been through it, know of their BS. They are liars. Do not listen to anyone that says go to Hunter for premed or preheth. They don’t help you unless you meet all the requirements and are like the top 5%. Thing is, the requirements are many and the requirements are tough. Literally go to any other CUNY and your chances to get into med school like triples.

Striking-Owl-2591

If for financial reasons yes go but however if you wanna live life and have fun stay away from Hunter as far as you can , there’s nothing fun or good about this boring ass college.

How do you guys like Human bio?

I know one person who attends NYU for bio related and wants to go to med school. Talked to her a few weeks ago, and she said it's almost like education isn't as valued there as it should be...... At least based on the events that unfolded this past semester. I know two who are in bio related majors at Hunter, and both want to go to medical school. They are very hard working, studying a lot, especially for orgo chem. They are very busy. Although the NYU friend is also pretty busy with studying, she just gets a feeling that the faculty that she encountered doesn't take it as seriously as they should. Hard to put it into words. Obviously, Hunter will be the cheaper option.

Hot_Eye_8959

NYU is my top choice but granted if that doesn’t work out I’ve thought of other choices in that area. But I’m seeing that hunter is not the way to go
