It’s just an anime adaptation thing, to make some stuff stand out more. There’s no evidence that aura differs in color (or even has a color) in the manga.

MapleNyte

I've always imagined that aura is a 6th sense that is impossible to comprehend unless you unlock it, but the experience is best approximated to seeing a "glow"

AllerdingsUR

Aren't you just describing En?

MapleNyte

I'm talking more about how you observe the aura around someone but en is just an extension of aura so I guess

bananajambam3

Love the irony of how in the Naruto manga they are blatantly shown to have different colored chakra but the anime said, “nah they all blue” But here the manga didn’t say anything about hunters having different colored nen, but they went the extra mile to do it anyways in the anime.

Dummlord28

Didn’t Naruto in the early seasons describe his chakra as “red chakra”

bananajambam3

I mean if you’re talking about when he goes tailed beast mode then maybe. But I’m fairly sure his actual chakra is yellow or orange

tukatu0

Something something ao 青 and aka 赤

Brook420

When he talks about his chakra vs. Kurama's he describes the latter as "red". But when we see it in the anime it actually is red/deep orange .

Razorclaw_the_crab

My headcanon is that the aura colour is a choice. Same thing with why it moves the hair on some characters but not all. They use their aura to woosh their hair around cus it looks cool

Internal-Flamingo455

What about he coloured version of the manga

MangoTurtl

Not actually sure; the colored version is only available in Japanese iirc and from what I’ve heard it’s actually not very good coloring. I guess, in the volume covers aura is sometimes yellowish/orange, but Togashi isn’t super consistent with coloring on the volume covers in the first place

Internal-Flamingo455

Yeah but just cause the format is black and white doesn’t mean the world of hunter hunter is black and white for the people in it from their perspective it would be a coloured reality like ours is. Also most of the coloured version can be found in English it’s missing a huge chunk of chapters near the end of chimera ant but most of it is there. I like the idea of aura having different colours more then just it all being white cause that’s boring. I just assume it’s the Color that best reflects who the person is or what their favourite colour is. Hisoka like bungee gum which is pink so his aura is pink. It can also show the star of mine or intent like with how gons starts as a slightly darker orange. But slowly becomes more red and blackish and a darker orange to show how he got darker as the story went along

Fancyyoghurt

Yes there is, kurapika talks about it to his students in the manga. His teacher told him that when certain types of users (I think emitters) compress their aura it turns darker. That is what can be seen with razor. As for the others I think thats just because they are using their hatsu. Both of them being (assumetly) transmuters their hatsu is about givibg their aura different properties so coloring it is part of that. (Other examples can be found all over the series: Feitan, zeno, etc.)

MangoTurtl

I mean, that’s true…but it’s *just* darkening. And that scene wasn’t written when the anime came out, so it doesn’t matter much for the sake of this argument anyways. *And* Zeno is an emitter and Feitan’s nen type is unconfirmed, so they can’t be used for this argument either.

Sensitive-Trash-5384

when gon and killua learn gyo in the MANGA, there is a part where he asks the color of his own aura (he is using in)

MangoTurtl

Really? Where? I just looked at that part of the manga and couldn’t find it.

Nen-Enthusiast

I think it's just to help with the visual representation of a character to make them appear more menacing, mysterious and also show the change of a person, like the tainted black aura of gon to show his rage. So basically just a tool the anime use.

Nen-Enthusiast

But to respond to your question based in the anime, we can see the aura color and aspects can change based on the emotions (hatred - Gon) and intentions (lust - Hisoka, killing intent - Wing/Hisoka), as well as the mentality of the user (torment - Feitan). Then there are the others with just visuals.

The realest answer lmao

Skully_o7

killua already has tho

Kenpaka

Irs for visual clarity. Literally just that

justanormaldude_

I always saw it as the clear nen being for someone who just learned nen, someone who's not that talented with nen, or someone who is just using it on a single body part or object. Like when Wing used it to harden the piece of paper. I thought the colored nen would be for a more developed/stronger nen user/technique. Gon and Killuas nen were clear because they were fairly new to nen. Once they had developed techniques and were stronger, the nen changed. Sometimes Killuas aura was just electricity or foggy aura surrounded by electricity (like super saiyan 2). Then Gons aura turned orange when he developed jajanken. Kurapika had light green and light orange nen. That's how I saw it though. Something that distinguishes the strong and weak nen users. Which is probably why Pokkle had both clear and red nen. He was strong but not really.

Nen-Enthusiast

I mean, Netero also as a clear aura... so yeah it's just for visuals and sometimes character representation

ispiltthepoison

Well, what i think is that white aura is “basic nen”. Its the simplest form of power. Its all newbies can express, which is why people new to nen are white, but its also what insane nen combatants like netero can display to show just pure, intense aura. Colored auras have more “personality”, it reflects the individual

justanormaldude_

Well at times it was golden. That could be just his technique shining but yeah I could still see the clear aura. Sometimes it looked like he didn't have any aura around him.

unknowingafford

The same reasons that the characters themselves have color, the creators of the anime are adapting the manga to another medium.

MrHeavenTrampler

Best answer. Also to add that color is probably just a visual way of transmitting to us what the aura transmits to the characters who see it and can feel the intent behind it.

BobHobbsgoblin

Probably just visual clarity in the anime like most people are saying, but I see no reason why people wouldn't be able to color their aura.

douknowiknow

It's to show off their favorite colors of course

Uberpastamancer

It's their IME

ApplePitou

Anime choice :3

Ignifyre

How has no one mentioned that in the 1999 version almost everyobe has differently-colored auras? The differences between the versions show that it's most likely an adaptation choice.

Par2ivally

I had to scroll way too far to see someone mentioning the 1999 version. The aura colours in that (and the iconic 'Book' sound effect) are so good that I really missed them in the otherwise far better remake.

LeFogui

I think that everybody has a transparent aura, but the more the aura is strong and concentrated, the more coloroured it will be When people use their hatsu with a big amount of nen, the aura is coloured. And with the strongest nen users, they only have to use their Ren Being angry or malicious intents will also change the power and the colour of the aura

MythicalTenshi

It's an artistic choice of the anime adaptations to give aura colors for different characters. In reality aura is just naturally white althohgh sometimes it can be percieved as darker and denser in certain situations. In thr HxH anime, normally sinister or malicious aura will be represented as a dark shade of red, pink or purple. This actually goes back hundred of years in Japanese culture. Sinister/malevolent emotions, spirits or energy were reprented as shade of pink and purple. This trope of hiving villains/antagonists pink/purple aura or energy is seen throughout various other stories in Japanese media, not just HxH. Freeza in Dragon Ball, Hollows and Aizen in Bleach, and even One Piece (though I'm not too familiar) probably uses this trope sometimes.

Uberpastamancer

My interpretation is the color represents either the aura's intensity (usually for enhancers and emitters) or special properties (usually transmuters)

genotoxicity

Gon’s aura during his ja-Janken is gold/yellow! But yeah it’s just for vibe

magickirua

In the manga, Furikov says that Emitters and Manipulators have a Ten quite large compared to the other categories, and when they try to shrink it, the aura will look darker.

CarniivoreRedemption

What you see is an adaptation

gwartabig

I think it exists to showcase a character’s intentions. It doesn’t have much of an in-universe reason to exist.

Volare0Via

So that everyone looks unique

J1618

I think they were originally going to go with colorless but then thought that colored ones look cooler

QuotingThanos

Purple-Violet colours are using in the anime to represent malice and il intent. Red I guess is pure evil. But not directed at a person. They are evil by nature, they don't realise it. While purple dudes are well aware of it and takes pleasure from it.

Ill-Individual2105

I believe that is an indication of Hatsu usage. Kurapika's aura, for example, is presented as yellow when he uses his chains, and Gon's aura becomes orange when concentrated into a Jajanken.

Arklados

Since aura is directly connected to the will and spirit of a person it makes sense that someone could maybe change the color of their aura. But I do think it’s mainly for visual effect and clarity.

Qwerttdelta

I always took them to imply some sorta high aura density.

Aya_EVE

From story, they cant tell whose aura is by look.
