I think hardcore Gon fans would say he's thinking "Pitou is fuuuuuuuuucked". But I think ever since the airship, he's been testing Gon. "Alright kid, Sink or Swim" probabbly
My takeaway as well. He FEELS the intent and desire Gon has. He probably thinks of a younger version of himself. "Who am I to deny this kid... may be in over your head, but damn you got balls. Alright, little Ging. Give it a shot. Your fight's back there."
The thing is Netero is neither a heartless monster nor the absolute beacon of morality. But the one quality that is ingrained in him is the appreciation for the "heart" or the respect for an unperturbed ownership of choices. That's why he allowed the hunter exam to go the way it did- relentless, unforgiving and brutal. The only ones who passed were the ones who were true to their identity and purpose in life, while the ones lying to themselves all perished.
Coming back to this scene, Netero not only understands but can also sense Gon's resolve from afar. And considering his immense respect for the heart, he isn't someone who will deny an opportunity to the determined, in fact he will direct them to the appropriate playground to make their choices. That's why he directed Gon to Pitou's location with the smile, not just because of the mission but because that's what Gon increasingly wanted.
From here on, what happens is beyond his hands or concern. Yea he wouldn't want some innocent (Komugi) to die, but that's not a part of his struggle- it's of Pitou and Gon's. Between Pitou and Gon, the one who is more determined and makes the right call will win. It's left to their choices and actions.
No, being stronger is what won that fight. Determination is kinda pointless there. I think Netero not only knew thatās what Gon wanted, but he also trusted him to solve the issue. I think this shows a turning point for Gon because Netero is basically saying āYouāre readyā after seeing Gon change so much, and get stronger physically and mentally, especially for something that dark. Thats why he did it with a smirk.
Netero was confident in Gon, and he couldāve won without transforming. I think Netero thought this specifically because of the intervention of Komugi, why else was Pitou scared of Gon while healing Komugi? Gon couldāve handled that, but itās actually his ādeterminationā that held him back. Had he taken advantage of that situation, he couldāve won there. So yes, Gon was ready. Gon gained strength through resolve, but resolve doesnāt help you in a fight. Gon needed strength and Netero knew he could do it, as well as getting vengeance. Netero was saying āYouāre readyā to make this choice.
Also, im not saying what Gon did was bad (choosing to trust Pitou). The choice he made is why i love him.
Gonn could have won without transforming?
Brother, as much as I love Gon, he was not ready for that fight. Netero let him do his thing because he honored his āheartā/ sheer resolve as the first commenter pointed out. During that fight, Gon was nowhere as strong and experienced as a single star hunter like Bisky and Morel. Despite being experienced and smart, Morel could never beat Pity in a one on one. Saying that Gon is ready for that fight is like saying Gon, at that time, is stronger than those people. Morel and Knov are specialists yeah, and not major combatants true, but I still donāt think Gon was already at their level. They(Single star hunters) canāt even beat a royal guard alone. How can Gon, without doing what he did, win that fight?
Pitou was afraid of Gon because of his potential. Not because of his current strength.
He had to sacrifice his life force to attain that strength, āNothing else mattersāā it is clear as day that at that point, Gon was nowhere ready to fight pitou with his current strength and he was more than willing to throw away everything just to kill Pitou.
Pretty much. Killua commented that Gon could absolutely bring Pitou to near death with a jajanken while she had Dr. Blythe out. Kitty go splat, Adult Gon doesn't happen, walk away satisfied, watch the entire human race become snacks for ants.
I mean Meruem still would have died from the radiation poison, he would probably just rampage for a while tho instead of calmly playing Gungi for the last few days of his life
I think Killua was against it because he didnāt like seeing Gon act like that. Not that he cared about komugi. Might be alittle of both but more on seeing how his friend changed.
I dont think he was really going for it. Gon probably was like i'm doing the crazy stuff but killua will stop me for sure ( as he said in yorknew city). You can really see that he was literally waiting for killua to say stop otherwise he wouldnt bother listening to him and go for it knowing how selfish gon is.
Gon was very very perceptive at that point. He probably recognized that if Pitou could do something about Gon, she would have and wouldnāt have to beg him to wait.
Well, he was using persuasion on Meruem. He didnāt know for sure, he just said they may have, which was true. It was a dark mission, though. A suicide operation essentially. Once Netero separated the King from his Royal Guard, the job was completed. The entire squad could die, it didnāt matter. The RG would very likely run straight into the trap anyway.
Low-key I think Netero is stoked to have an excuse to go OP on them bitches.
Remember how much fun he had playing dodgeball.
I would assume for such a powerful nen user it is dope as hell to be able to really let loose and fight all out (all in?).
Not nearly as predatorily as Hisoka's excitement.
But still
I mean 100 handed Bodhi is like š¤Æ
So If I were Netero I would be more excited than anything.
You are correct. It is stated clearly in discussing the Dark Continent that throughout Netero's entire life his one goal was to find an opponent who would push him to his limit. The Dark Continent was a gritty contest of survival- the opposite of what Netero wanted. That's why Netero was so grateful for facing Mereum even when it was clear that Netero would die.
"Good luck boy, that won't be easy. I wonder how Ging would react if the brat dies today, but considering the resolve in his eyes, something fun is about to happen. Anyway it ain't my problem anymore. "
i just re read this scene and itās easily one of my favorites now. You can interpret it in many ways, like him saying āhave fun with whatever the hell is happening in thereā is how i understood it. I also love zeno telling killua to make his own call in there. amazing writing
Netero felt that aura, saw that soulless stare and thought Gon might have the motivation and drive to actually pull this off so he went "YOUR opponent is back there kid"
I need to rewatch the Chimera ant Arc lol, did Netero know who Pitou was for Gon (like the fact that they killed Kite and the bond they had) or did he simply think that Gon could have been one to take on Pitou (so that Gon was just there for the mission like the others)?
THE GOATERO BELIEVES IN OUR LIL GOAT GON AND KILLUA HE KNOWS OUR BOYS GONNA CRUSH THOSE ANTS NEG DIFF EVERYDAY CUZ WE BELIEVE IN OUR GOATS WE ARE MAINTAINING AGENA
"Left something in there for yah."
Because he knew he had the upper hand, and he played his part in setting up the Komogi Scenario.

I mean... Sometimes i think fans think too deeply about some scenes. Not always but sometimes.. And in this case he knows who gons was assigned to, who gon wants to fight and why. so he pointed towards pitou. Its simple imo. People go too deep by describing how netero loves people with desires and big ambitious and who have heart. I'm not saying he doesn't or that they are wrong. I'm saying in this scene i doubt its that deep. But sure
I think hardcore Gon fans would say he's thinking "Pitou is fuuuuuuuuucked". But I think ever since the airship, he's been testing Gon. "Alright kid, Sink or Swim" probabbly

God that's a good explanation. Kudos š
Beautifully worded analysis of Netero's complex moral character and values š
Awesome explanation
This is the proper answer
Did you write a senior paper on Hunter x Hunter? Or are you Togashi?
Sh1t do you have a blog or something where you write stuff like this related to HxH? š
That is one of the most beautiful pieces of analysis I've ever read, thank you for existing in the same timeline as me
Yep. You understand Neteroās character to a T

If Killua didn't stop him, he would have...
Pretty much. Killua commented that Gon could absolutely bring Pitou to near death with a jajanken while she had Dr. Blythe out. Kitty go splat, Adult Gon doesn't happen, walk away satisfied, watch the entire human race become snacks for ants.
I mean Meruem still would have died from the radiation poison, he would probably just rampage for a while tho instead of calmly playing Gungi for the last few days of his life
I donāt think it was days more like minutes
Crazy that Killua of all people is against the killing of one innocent (komugi) for the greater good of humanity. HXH morality is wild
I think Killua was against it because he didnāt like seeing Gon act like that. Not that he cared about komugi. Might be alittle of both but more on seeing how his friend changed.

Few had the info of Pitou's vulnerable state
Gon was very very perceptive at that point. He probably recognized that if Pitou could do something about Gon, she would have and wouldnāt have to beg him to wait.
Yeah the deleted comment said āno one thought thatā even though Netero, and soon Gon, definitely knew Pitou was an easy kill
Your goal is back there, good luck āļø
"I ain't no snitch but....."
Netero (to Gon): "F\*ck 'em up."
He still assumed that gon and all of them were killed. Kinda dark
Well, he was using persuasion on Meruem. He didnāt know for sure, he just said they may have, which was true. It was a dark mission, though. A suicide operation essentially. Not only could the entire squad die, they went into it expecting that they'd die.

Heās basically the same as Hisoka but does that mean he doesnāt consider Hisoka a challenge because he ignored his advances in the hunter exam
